Waller weekly news 15 july 2016 Firebird Flyer (inside)getting the upper hand at Randwick. This week the stable celebrated three winners with smart Stravinsky filly Firebird Flyer continuing her rich vein of form with a determined effort when stepping up to the 2000m distance off the back of a win over a mile last start. She looks an exciting horse for the future as does the Flemington stable s winner this week in Magicus who collected his fourth win and third at Moonee Valley on Wednesday. Star Thoroughbreds great roll of success also continued on Saturday with Aldesaar breaking through for his maiden victory. The Star team are currently syndicating a great-value daughter of the stable s Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Reliable Man with more details on this opportunity later in the newsletter. This weekend as well as runners at Caulfield, Eagle Farm and Kembla, we have a strong hand to play at our home track of Rosehill with good chances in seven of the day s races as we endeavour to notch up another six weeks before season end to break our Sydney Metro Premiership record of wins. We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! INSIDE THIS ISSUE WINNERs News, getting to know James Seivwright & photos admin@cwallerracing.com

l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK firebird flyer 3yo F Stravinsky - Margaux Belle by Kaapstad This former New Zealander has been a model of consistency since joining the stable and having broke through for a maiden win at her previous start she made it back to back wins when scoring at Randwick on Saturday over 2000m. Tim Clark was on board the daughter of Stravinsky as she stepped up in distance from her previous start over 1600m. Mindful of this on the heavy track, Clark settled her at the tail of the field early on before making ground patiently in the straight to challenge inside the final furlong. Hitting the front close to home this consistent filly gained a gutsy victory. magicus 4yo G Statue of Liberty - Lil Cesna by Orpen The son of Statue of Liberty made it four wins from just six starts when scoring at Moonee Valley on Wednesday over 1200m. Craig Williams was on board and he controlled the race from the outset on Magicus leading from start to finish around the tight Valley circuit to score impressively. He seems to relish Moonee Valley with this being his third win at the venue from as many starts there. Having only made his racecourse debut in January of this year, Magicus has proved to be a horse of considerable talent and will no doubt give his owners plenty of fun in the future. aldesaar 3yo G Magic Albert - Condesaar by Xaar Racing in the Star Thoroughbred colours this son of Magic Albert broke through for a maiden victory at Newcastle on Saturday over 1350m with Chad Lever in the saddle. Lever had him prominent throughout before bringing him with a strong challenge in the straight to score a determined victory. Hopefully this will give Aldesaar some confidence and he can now go on and build on this as he continues this campaign. Thanks to Bradley Photographers and darryl sherer for our weekly photos.

Confidence key for Tales Of Grimm Chris Waller believes last-start winner Tales Of Grimm now has the confidence to win the Winter Stakes. Tales Of Grimm had his first win for Waller in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm on June 25. Waller said that win gave the seven-year-old an important confidence boost ahead of the Listed Winter Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday. "It was good to get a horse like that back into winning form because I think it means a lot to those older horses," Waller said. "They get used to running into bad luck and it's often disheartening, but they've got the ability." Waller sees similarities between Tales Of Grimm and the topweight in the race, the Peter Robl-trained Ninth Legion who spent more than 16 months out of the winner's circle before stringing together two stakes wins in the past month. Waller says the step back from 1500 to 1400 metres is no concern for Tales Of Grimm who he believes is well weighted with 56.5kg. The gelding will be the widest runner in the race, but that doesn't worry Waller. "He's not the best of the barrier horses. He likes to be back in the second half of the field," Waller said. The stable's other runner in the race is one-time Epsom Handicap prospect Marenostro. But after disappointing at his past two starts, Waller said Marenostro needs to step up. "I think he was suspect at the mile with a big weight two starts ago," Waller said. "Last start he was shunted three-wide and didn't get any cover on a pretty quick track, a firmer track." Marenostro has drawn barrier one and has four wins and three placings on a heavy track. But a clear weather forecast and strong winds are likely to mean an upgrade at Rosehill before Saturday. "The wetter the track the better for him," Waller said. The Paul Perry-trained Wouldnt It Be Nice has drawn outside Marenostro in barrier two, while the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Snippets Land has gate five. Ninth Legion and Oxford Poet are the $5 equal favourites in early markets with Tales Of Grimm at $6. 4 busuttin in awe of his former student s deeds Paddy Busuttin, like the rest of us, continues to marvel at his former student s deeds. Waller currently has 162 Sydney metro winners for the season; chasing his own record of set in 2012/13. He has also claimed 15 G1 victories, eclipsing his previous best of 14 last season. While Busuttin never envisaged Topher would reach such heights, he says the signs were there right from the early days at his stable in Foxton. I d known his family for years and years, a really nice family, good racing people. What always stood out, right from when he joined us from school, was that he was always first there in the morning and if there was anything extra to be done, he was there to do it, Busuttin says. We sent him over to Australia at a very young age. We did Sydney and Brisbane, and I was backwards and forwards but he was there for the whole trip and the way he looked after the team was what stood out. I ve actually got a photocopy of something out of the newspaper. Subzero is in the parade ring before the Brisbane Cup and Chris is leading Castletown round behind him. Busuttin says there was no particular moment that gave a glimpse of Waller s future stardom, but reveals his devotion to one specific galloper showed he was on the path to something special. We had a mare called Talent Scout come up to Brisbane and she was a pretty handy staying mare. She won a mile race at Brisbane. Mick Dittman rode her, he says. She was always a bit dicky in the legs and Chris would go out and spend hours through the day hosing her legs and icing them and re-bandaging them. The trainer we were stabling with in Brisbane couldn t believe the dedication. Now training on the Gold Coast, Busuttin says it was great to catch-up with his protege over the Brisbane winter carnival and crack a few jokes. Busuttin notes how impressed he is that, despite Waller's great horsemanship, he continues to attribute his ongoing success to the team around him. One thing we always tried to do when we had the big team back home, I never ever said anyone worked for me. I always said they worked with me, and always tried to treat it as a team, Busuttin says. I think Chris has carried that on and carried that out remarkably well. A man Busuttin knows will continue to reach new heights for some time yet. I think Chris would be successful in pretty much anything he d do, he says. He s had a fantastic season. he just keeps going and going, it s great to see. - G1X.com.au

Waller putting late 2yos to the test In the depths of winter, Sydney's leading stable's two-year-olds begin to emerge. While some of Sydney's major stables target features like the Golden Slipper and the Blue Diamond Stakes, Chris Waller's proven formula relies on bringing juveniles to the track late. Tumultuous and High Mist will be the latest Waller-trained two-year-olds to tackle a Saturday grade race in the Hyland Race Colours 2yo Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill. Waller sees Tumultuous as a Group Three Gloaming Stakes hope, a three-year-old race the champion trainer won last year with subsequent Group One winner Vanbrugh. "I think the more racing he has the better he will get," Waller said. "1400 metres is perfect for him for Saturday, but in the spring I think you'll see him get out to a race like the Gloaming Stakes possibly, which is 1800 metres." Tumultuous broke through for an easy maiden win at Kembla Grange last start on July 4. That form improved after the Gai Waterhouse-trained Dynastic Lady, third in the race at Kembla, won at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Waller said since the win Tumultuous had improved and impressed the trainer in his trackwork. High Mist is raced by the Ingham family and carries their famous cerise silks. They were also carried by Japonisme, another Waller-trained horse produced as a late season two-year-old before going on to score an elite-level win at three. At High Mist's last start at Rosehill on July 2, he finished sixth in a race where Waller-trained two-year-olds Awoke and Foxplay filled the quinella. "High Mist was disappointing last start through the fact that he over-raced and never gave himself a chance to finish off," Waller said. "He's better than that." A gear change could be the key to getting the colt to show his true colours on Saturday. "For Saturday we've taken the blinkers off and that will hopefully see him settle better and finish off better," Waller said. Tumultuous is an $11 chance while High Mist is $15 to score the second victory of his career. A win for either in the opening race at Rosehill will give Waller one of the six wins he needs to break his record for most Sydney wins in a season. AAP Tumultuous winning his maiden at Kembla Grange.

Hursley shooting for another Melbourne victory at Caulfield Trainer Chris Waller has a simple plan for Hursley's bid for another win in Melbourne in Saturday's Wilson Medic One Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield. Hursley's Melbourne form is terrific with the three-year-old only suffering one defeat in the southern capital with his record including a stakes win at Flemington during last year's Melbourne Cup carnival. The son of Makfi scored a strong win at his last start at Caulfield on July 2 and Waller described how Saturday's $80,000 would ideally pan out in his weekly video update. "He's had three runs in Melbourne for two wins and a third so clearly he likes left-handed (tracks) better, Waller said. "He's got the topweight of 60kg but he had that last start. "Barrier eight of 13, he should get a good run midfield (and will be) storming down the outside. Hursley is a $4.50 second pick behind the Terry and Karina O'Sullivan-trained Fearless Raider, who is a $3.50 favourite in the early betting on the event. Hursley is Waller's only runner engaged at Caulfield on Saturday but the handy stayer forms part of Melbourne jockeys' premiership leader Craig Williams's book of mounts. Williams booted home a double at Moonee Valley on Wednesday to accompany his five winners at Flemington last Saturday and the flurry of victories propelled the jockey to a one-win lead in the Melbourne riders' crown. Williams has rides in eight of the nine races at Caulfield with bookies viewing the Darren Weir-trained Ulmann as his best chance of the day, making the three-year-old a $3.10 favourite to win the LUCRF Super Supports Jockeys Handicap (1400m). - Sporting News

getting to know James Seivwright This week Rosehill-based trackwork rider and resident Ice Man James Seivwright kindly took some time to do this week s staff interview. I was born in England, but moved to Ireland at a young age as my father went over there to breed racehorses, so I ve pretty much been immersed in horse racing all my life. Not that I liked horses though, I didn t start riding until the age of 12 where I started out riding show ponies (I tend not to mention this to too many people) and hunting- which is another great love of mine and then progressed onto racing ponies at the age of fourteen where I had a couple of winners and caught the racing bug. I moved back to England at the age of sixteen to pursue a career as a jockey where in my short lived career through injury and growing to be 6 feet tall I rode 4 winners point to point racing. I then decided to come to Australia for a year, as I ve always wanted to come here, before heading back to England in September to join the army as an officer. Nickname? Jimbob Favourite quote? Take every opportunity as it comes. Favourite part of the job? Getting a biscuit for winning a jump out. Favourite horse? Thunder Down Under, there s something about him.. Best horse ever seen? I saw Frankel win the 2000 Guineas, that was pretty special to see. Role model? My dad, he s a great man and made me the person I am today. Favourite food? The chicken wrap with everything in it from Charcoal Chicken in Granville, it s absolute food porn! Favourite jockey? Ryan Moore, he wins everywhere he goes. James and Tumultuous. If you weren t in racing, what would you have done? I would have probably gone into hunt service or gone to university and been a property agent. Event in the world that you would most like to attend? The Mongol Derby- not so much attend but participate, it s a 1000km race through the Mongolian steppe on semi-wild Mongol ponies, the experience would be amazing! If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? Sir Mark Prescott- I worked for him once, he was a great boss and loves hunting probably more than me and Boris Johnson- he s my favourite politician, there never seems to be a dull moment with him! What would you do with your last $5? Buy food, I love eating Tip for the weekend? Tumultuous- he won over this distance last start, he s been going well at home and Rory s on him.
