1 Waller weekly news 20 october 2016 Vanbrugh relished a return to his favoured middle-distances on Saturday with a nice Group 3 Coongy Cup win at Caulfield. The Group One winning son of Encosta de Lago will stand at Windsor Park Stud next spring and every win counts when it comes to enhancing a young sire s prospective value at stud. Randwick on Saturday provided successes for the stable at both ends of the age spectrum with grand campaigner Junoob saluting as a nine-year-old while the highly regarded juvenile filly Madame Moustache provided our second 2yo winner in as many weeks. Invinzabeel added another city win to his record, rounding off a trio of Randwick winners for the stable while Chaussure broke maiden ranks impressively yesterday at Warwick Farm for Debbie and Paul Kepitis. The team now heads into our most anticipated race day to date with our wonder mare Winx primed and ready to defend her Cox Plate title. She s had another two gallops at Moonee Valley in the past week and has pleased Chris and Hugh in both so now it s all up to the racing gods - fingers crossed for a lucky and safe passage tomorrow at Moonee Valley! 2 l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK VANBRUGH 4yo H Encosta de Lago - Soho Secret by Lucky Owners The son of Encosta De Lago relished the step back up to 2000m when taking out the Group 3 Coongy Cup at Caulfield on Saturday. Ben Melham was in the saddle and he produced a gem of a ride settling the entire in behind the leaders early on with The Cleaner setting a decent pace up front. With a strong head wind on the day, Melham was content to race with cover for as long as possible. As they approached the straight he angled Vanbrugh into the clear and he was still travelling strongly. His only serious challenger was Tom Melbourne but Vanbrugh soon had his measure and he went on to score a cosy enough win at the finish. This will no doubt prove to be a good confidence booster with the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes a likely target later in the carnival. junoob 9yo G Haafhd - Faydah by Bahri He may be a nine-year-old now but Junoob showed that he still possesses great zest for racing and will to win when taking out the Tatt s Club Cup at Listed level over 2400m at Randwick on Saturday. Rory Hutchings took the mount and he always had the son of Haafhd in a good position just off the leaders early on before producing him in the straight with a sustained run which saw him prove too strong for stablemate Murphy s Delight who was a gallant runner up. Junoob has been a marvel for connections winning 12 races and over $1 million in prize money and he will enjoy a happy retirement after this season. invinzabeel 5yo G I Am Invincabeel - Belle Mia by Zabeel The son of I Am Invincible made it back to back Saturday victories when scoring at Randwick on Saturday over 1400m on his return from a brief freshen up. Rory Hutchings enjoyed a good day at the office on Saturday and he produced a patient ride on Invinzabeel settling him at the rear of the field early on before producing him in the straight for a comfortable success. 3 Madame moustache 2yo F Hinchinbrook - Gamble by Encosta de Lago Having shown plenty of promise on debut this likeable daughter of Hinchinbrook stepped up on that initial introduction when scoring a gutsy win at Randwick on Saturday over 1000m. Kathy O Hara was aboard and she had the filly prominent throughout after jumping well from an inside barrier. In the straight Madame Moustache was strongly challenged and headed by runner up Darhad, however she showed great tenacity to fight back along the inside and regain the lead close to home for a well deserved victory. chaussure 3yo C Jimmy Choux - Keepa Cheval by Keeper Having shown plenty of promise when placed second on debut in July the Kepitis family s Karaka purchase by Jimmy Choux returned from a break to score at Warwick Farm on Wednesday over 1400m under Tommy Berry. With a strong early pace on Berry settled him at the rear of the field giving him plenty of time to relax. 5 Chris Waller wary but confident Winx still the best The all-conquering combination of trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman believe they have the best horse in Saturday s $3 million Cox Plate, but they differ on just how superior Winx is. They are in no doubt last year s winner can extend her unbeaten sequence to 13 by defeating obvious danger Hartnell in what is shaping as the best match race since Bonecrusher s Cox Plate victory over Our Waverley Star 30 years ago, a clash still recognised as the race of the century. Bowman yesterday said the 2040m spring major was heading for a genuine two-horse war, but Waller maintained the 10-horse field contained more depth than the betting indicated. When asked for his danger in the weight-for-age championship, apart from Hartnell, Bowman said: It s hard to pick one from another. On their day they can all perform but reality is, with even luck, I can t see them beating her. I m more confident of winning this year than I was last year. Even though it s looking like a two-horse affair between her and Hartnell, I won t be falling into the trap of ignoring my other rivals. I don t say we need luck like we had last year, but we certainly don t need any bad luck. Winx had a leisurely gallop at Moonee Valley s Breakfast with the Best yesterday when she worked stylishly solo. We didn t do a whole lot with her this morning, Bowman said. Just a stretch-the-legs exercise, but she did a nice piece of work here on Saturday morning in company and she felt very good. I guess I ve just got to do my job. When asked if she was bigger, stronger and better than 12 months ago, Bowman was quick to emphatically answer: Yes. Winx, who won by almost five lengths last year in course record time at 500kg, will race about 18kg heavier on Saturday. Umut, Winx and Chris.

6 The horse couldn t be better. I m very happy, Chris s happy, and looking forward to it, Bowman said. Hartnell has impressed me with the way he s raced leading into this and he s going to be very well placed over 10 furlongs, so he s a worthy opponent. Waller would not buy into the perception that Saturday s 30th anniversary of Bonecrusher s win would produce another two-horse title fight. It s a Cox Plate: history will tell us yes winning form and lead-up form is good, but it s a different type of race and it s a pressure race, he said. The first horse that comes to mind is a horse like (dual winner) Fields Of Omagh. He wouldn t be favourite this year but geez he d be in the finish so they re the horses you need to respect in a Cox Plate just as much as the short-priced favourites. He said racing threw up many surprises and cited his current champion, saying that 14 months ago, he never thought Winx had the ability to win a Cox Plate, let alone be an odds-on favourite to win the race twice. In the same vein, who would have thought Hartnell would be considered in the same class as Winx following his 10-length fifth to the four-year-old mare in last year s Cox Plate. When Hartnell s trainer John O Shea was asked if he was concerned by Winx s favourable barrier draw (three) compared his galloper s gate seven, he said: I m concerned that she s even in the race. Waller said he respected the chances of three-year-old filly Yankee Rose, who is on the minimum weight. She s a Group I winner, won over 2000 metres, so she ticks a lot of boxes, he said. The last filly to win was Surround, in Yankee Rose s trainer David Vandyke described his filly s work yesterday as outstanding. It s probably one of the best pieces of work I ve seen her put in before a race, he said. She s right on top of her game and I think she ll put in a career-best performance on Saturday. Vandyke believes Saturday s Group I race is far from a match race between Winx and Hartnell. She s never met either of those two horses before so she wouldn t be nervous, she ll relish it, he said. She loves a big crowd and we re just enjoying the ride. They re superstars and our filly s on the way up and coming off the back of a Group I win. - Greg Denahm, The Australian

7 Impressive Endless Drama is Emirates bound Chris Waller s new recruit Endless Drama will run first-up in the Emirates Stakes (2000m) after recording an impressive barrier trial win at Cranbourne on Monday. Endless Drama arrived in Melbourne with the first shipment of horses for the Spring Carnival and came out of quarantine last Saturday. Formerly trained by Ger Lyons in Ireland, Endless Drama is owned by Qatar Bloodstock. The trial was a great way for us to see where he is at and just learn more about the horse, Waller said. I only laid eyes on him for the first time recently at the quarantine centre at Werribee. He has been going quite well on the track but like the punters, we didn t really have much of a guide on him. Taking him to Cranbourne was a way of getting to find out how he handles travel, how he recovers, how he performs and a better understanding of where his fitness levels are at. Ridden by Craig Williams, Endless Drama settled off the pace before working clear in the straight to win the 1190m trial with ease. The official winning margin was eight lengths, a performance that has Waller pleased. I would say one in five of the European imports fire when they come to Australia, Waller said. And, from what I ve seen thus far, I think Endless Drama might fall in to the category of those that will handle our conditions. It is a big change for them, our style of racing, the conditions of our tracks and for whatever reason sometimes they just don t bring their form from Europe. The plan is to have only one run with Endless Drama this spring but he is an ideal horse to aim at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Sydney for the autumn carnival. - Brent Zerafa, Racing.com WATCH a replay at the bottom of this page.

8 Royal Ascot near miss still haunts Waller Chris Waller has taken practically all before him in Australia in the last few years but he narrowly missed out on Royal Ascot glory in 2015, something he continues to reflect on to this day. Brazen Beau was narrowly denied by Undrafted in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and as Waller prepares Winx for another shot at Cox Plate glory this weekend, he pondered the difference between taking care of a star at home versus attempting to do the same abroad. "I do feel the pressure [of being responsible for a star horse] but as all trainers can imagine, when you've got a number of horses to train, it distracts the attention from being on just one horse," he explained. "On Saturday, we'll have probably seven or eight runners and one of them happens to be in the Cox Plate but there'll be a race after it and a race before it. That just helps you to flow along. "That was something interesting I found with Brazen Beau. I would normally have around 150 horses in work every day but when I went over to England for a couple of weeks, I only had one horse, which was very different. When that happens, you maybe put a lot more emphasis on the horse, over-analyse and over-train them. "The best thing about Winx is she just fits in a does her job. 9 Another early two-year-old winner for Waller The Chris Waller stable produced its second two-year-old winner in successive weeks when Madame Moustache pulled out all stops to win the City Tattersalls Club Victory Vein Plate (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday. Madame Moustache ($2.20 fav), ridden by Kathy O Hara, fought back gallantly in a 600-metre duel with the Michael Feedman-trained Darhad ($5.50) to prevail in a photo finish by a nose while Gary Portelli s Ibanez ($8) finished another 1-1/4 lengths back in third. Waller typically waits until halfway through the season before unearthing the first of his two-year-olds but the beginning of the term has signalled a change behind the scenes with the stable s youngsters. Madame Moustache followed the impressive victory of Luiza last Saturday and stable foreman Charlie Duckworth said the preparation of their yearlings has been altered. It s been more the management of them as yearlings. We re doing their preps slightly differently and doing a lot more barrier work, We ve also been gifted with barrier one quite frequently which has been a massive help. Madame Moustache had the benefit of being one of only three in the field to have raced previously, finishing fourth to Jorda in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at the beginning of the month. She had to dig very deep to fight back but that s race experience for you it s absolutely priceless, Duckworth said. It was the difference between winning and losing today, she s done a tremendous job. She s taken natural improvement and is just tough and honest. 10 getting to know stuart williams This week Rosehill-based rider and stable-hand Stuart Williams, kindly took some time to do this week s staff interview and tell us a bit about himself. I m from a small farming community in South Wales in the United Kingdom. I had horses when I was younger which ignited the passion in racing and I rode 11 winners, spanning two seasons in the UK. Nickname? Stuie. Favourite quote? The brave wont live forever but cowards don t live at all. Favourite part of the job? Working horses, especially the speed work. Favourite horse? Chaussure.
