Waller weekly news 04 november 2016 The stable had another solid week this week with nine winners including Comin Through providing a very satisfying Group Three win for the team and connections. Carefully managed from conception, this valuable Fastnet Rock colt was born and raised at Coolmore for Sir Owen Glenn before having his early education at Dan Robinson s DPR Breaking and then progressing into CWR. Chris s well-planned campaign targeted him for the race and he was impressive in victory. In addition to our winners we had plenty of good runners up this week, none more so than McCreery who flashed up the Flemington straight in the Gr.1 Cantala Stakes and our gutsy mare French Emotion s second in the Gr1 Myer. Arod and Onerous also pleased, filling the second placings at Flemington yesterday in their respective races. We also can t go without mentioning the O Leary family s grand Kiwi campaigner Who Shot Thebarman who ran a brave fifth in the Melbourne Cup. That was his third run in the great race having finished a brilliant third in 2014 and eleventh last year. After the intensity of the carnival recently and plenty of runners in both states, this weekend we have smaller teams heading to Canterbury, Flemington and Newcastle. A big pat on the back and thanks to our staff in both states for digging in and helping us achieve the results we have to date this season. Tomorrow s feature is the $2 million Gr.1 Emirates Stakes, a race the stable has emerged victorious in on two occasions with Boban in 2013 and the enigmatic Albert The Fat (he s now living the life as a babysitter to the youngstock at the Liston family s Three Bridges in Victoria) in We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! 2 l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK comin through 3yo C Fastnet Rock - Mica s Pride by Bite the Bullet Criterion s younger brother took the step up to Group Three level in his stride at only his third start when winning the Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on Saturday over 1600m. Michael Walker was in the saddle and he rode a patient race settling him at the rear of the field early on before coming with a sustained run down the famous Flemington straight. Hitting the front inside the final furlong the son of Fastnet Rock battled on well for an impressive victory in the colours of his breeder, Sir Owen Glenn. kinema 6yo G Galileo - Bon Nuit by Night Shift Visiting English hoop Ryan Moore was out of luck in the Melbourne Cup but he showed his class earlier in the day when winning the Prince of Penzance Plate over 2800m on the imported galloper Kinema in Richard Pegum s colours. Moore settled the son of Galileo at the tail of the field early on before producing him close to home for a gutsy victory. This was only his second start in Australia and he should continue to pay his way on the evidence of this victory. metallic crown 4yo G Northern Meteor - Pegasus Queen by Fusaichi Pegasus Returning from a decent let up this talented son of Northern Meteor was back in the winners circle after a gutsy all the way win at Rosehill over 1350m. Rory Hutchings was on board and his intent was obvious from the outset as he took Metallic Crown straight to the lead and rolled along at a solid tempo throughout. Although he was challenged strongly in the straight this Ingham family owned galloper showed great determination to hold on for the win. Thanks to Bradley Photographers and darryl sherer for our weekly photos.

sonic swish 4yo G Nicconi - Decibeel by Zabeel This recent addition to the stable scored a solid victory at Randwick on Tuesday over 1200m under the in-form hoop Rory Hutchings. Carrying the top weight of 60kg Hutchings settled his mount at the rear of the field early on before producing him with a sustained challenge in the straight to score narrowly. This was a solid victory considering the weight he carried and he should hopefully reap more rewards for his owners in the near future. miss ballantine 3yo F Redoute s Choice - Glendelvine by Sunday Silence This talented daughter of Redoute s Choice made it two wins from just five starts when winning at Randwick on Tuesday over 1400m. Josh Parr took the mount and he had her prominent throughout in second position before taking over inside the final furlong for a gutsy victory. Miss Ballantine is a likeable filly who is yet to run a bad race with two minor placings to go with her two victories. lucienne 3yo F Stratum - Wings of Pegasus by Sahm Having run consistently well on a number of occasions this daughter of Stratum broke through for a well deserved maiden victory at Newcastle on Saturday over 1350m. Chris O Brien took the mount and he gave her a great trip settling in midfield early before coming with a well time challenge, to hit the front close to home for a narrow victory in the Star Thoroughbreds colours. video preview Make Charlie and Sophie s day and click on the image to the left to go to this week s video update with plenty of valuable insights into our runners this weekend!

alpha son 3yo G Snippetson - Al Faher by Al Maher Alpha Son was another one to break maiden ranks this week at Kembla Grange on Tuesday over 1600m. Stable provincial rider Chad Lever took the mount and he had him in the lead throughout and the son of Snippetson stayed on strongly in the straight to defy all challengers for a determined victory. bannatyne 4yo M Rothesay - Zalila by Zabeel Bannatyne was another this week to carry the Star Thoroughbreds silks to victory when winning at Kembla Grange on Tuesday over 1600m. Chad Lever was in the saddle and he had the daughter of Rothesay in third place throughout before she fought on strongly inside the final furlong to score narrowly. This was a third career victory for this consistent mare. pursuit of honour 4yo G Street Cry - Light Chance by Carnegie This son of Street Cry made it back to back wins when scoring at Hawkesbury on Thursday over 2100m under Rory Hutchings. With the top weight of 60kg, Hutchings settled his mount in mid-division well off the early speed. The pair were still closer to last place with two furlongs to run before staying on powerfully late on to hit the front close to home and scoring comfortably at the line. recently named horses Name Almighty Crown Enlightened Boy Monasterio Pure Hawk Stryke Rock Unforgotten Breeding Street Cry - Sesenta colt Smart Missile - Glendelvine colt Savabeel - Pingus gelding Purrealist - Mollyhawk colt Stryker - Ingham Magic colt Fastnet Rock - Memories of You filly

Chris Waller looks for first group 1 of Cup carnival Chris Waller has had his moments in the spotlight at Flemington this week although he has not saddled a winner in the major group 1 events. His old warrior Who Shot Thebarman ran his customary brave race in the Melbourne Cup, powering home late to snatch fifth place, albeit a long way behind the winner, Almandin, and runner-up Heartbreak City. Japonisme. Japonisme is contesting the Darley Classic. He went close on Derby day, saddling group 1 runners-up in the outsiders French Emotion (Myer Classic) and McCreery (Cantala Stakes), while on Cup day Kinema, the English import, gave every indication he could be a Cup contender in 12 months with a win in the Prince of Penzance Plate over 2800 metres. That gave Waller a second winner in the week, following the promising Comin' Through's success in the opening Carbine Club Stakes on Derby day. Saturday marks his last chance of gaining group 1 success, and Waller is throwing plenty of darts at the board to ensure he returns to Sydney with a major to his name from the four-day carnival. He will saddle runners in the two group 1 events that round out the carnival, the Darley Classic and the $2 million Emirates Stakes (formerly the Mackinnon Stakes), and, as with every Waller runner, they can't be discounted. "We have got Japonisme in the sprint," Waller said. "He ran a much better race last start, we couldn't find anything wrong with him, he just ran better [than before]. "He's won up the straight in the carnival before having won the Coolmore last year. He's been close in group 1 races since but hasn't won one. It's not going to be easy taking on the weight-for-age horses but he's there with a pretty good chance. "In the Emirates, we have got Vanburgh and Endless Drama. "Vanburgh won at Caulfield last time, and was a group 1 winner at three in the Spring Champions Stakes. It looks like a tough Emirates Stakes, but he's up over a suitable distance now.

Vanbrugh. "We kept him short of 2000 metres earlier this season to try and win the Epsom, but it didn't quite work. But his next start over 2000 metres at Caulfield [the David Jones Cup] he won... so if you take a line through his 1800 to 2000 form it's pretty handy form," he said. "Whether he is quite up to those good horses I am not sure, but we will see on Saturday." Waller is excited by the prospects of the Qatar Racing-owned European import Endless Drama. Whatever the son of Lope De Vega does this weekend, he is likely to be better in the autumn. The lightly raced entire was trained at the Curragh in Ireland by Ger Lyons until being relocated to Australia, and he had top-class form over 1600 metres in Europe. As a three-year-old he was second to the Coolmore galloper Gleneagles in the Irish 2000 Guineas, while as a four-year-old this year he ran third in the group 1 Lockinge Stakes to Belardo. "He's an interesting horse in the same race," Waller said. "He has settled in very well. He's a very big horse. He's done everything right, we have done a little twist of Australian training with him and had a good foundation to work with when he got here. "The twists included a trial, which he won. Admittedly he didn't beat much but he won it quite easily, then he went to Moonee Valley for an exhibition gallop. All his work under pressure has been good. "I think he will be a perfect horse for the autumn, I just hope he's sharp enough for Saturday." - Michael Lynch, SMH. KEEPING OUR HORSES HAPPY A big part of Chris s mantra to ensure we re getting the best out of our horses is that they re happy horses. The magic touch of Equine Physio Tom Simpson has been helping keep the the team sound, limber and happy for a few years now. Check out the video of Tom working on Grand Marshal at the Flemington stable this week thanks to Racing.com. To find out more about Tom s practice, check out his PhysioTom Equine Performance Physio website.

Plan comes together for Comin Through Chris Waller snared the first winner of the Flemington Melbourne Cup carnival when a long-range plan with three-yearold Comin Through paid off with victory in the prized group 3 Carbine Clue Stakes. Waller revealed that, while Comin Through was one of the first of the new yearlings to come into work as a yearling, the trainer noted his immaturity and scope to grow so opted for what he thought was the best plan for the horse s future. He was one of the first yearlings into the stable but it took him a while to furnish so we just let him alone and let him grow, Waller said after the Fastnet Rock colt broke through at the odds of $7. Waller said he followed the same path he took with Kermadec two years ago. I ruled out the early spring with this horse and just targeted him at this race which was what we did with Kermadec. They both had two runs coming into this race and they both performed. Comin Through is a half brother to the recently retired Criterion and Waller said he could only see upsides for the horse next autumn. He s got the pedigree, which gives me confidence and he does everything that s asked of him and is still very much an unfurnished colt so there s a lot to look forward to in the autumn with him. - Racing.com Moore, Waller & Kinema combine Ryan Moore, the rider many consider the world s best jockey, made an early appearance in the Melbourne Cup Day winner s stall after guiding Kinema to victory in the $100,000 Prince Of Penzance Plate. Almost exactly 24 hours after he landed at Tullamarine Airport, following a Group 1 win in Japan on Sunday, the Englishman steered the import to a narrow-but-impressive win in the 2800-metre event. Moore snagged Kinema back from the outside barrier and attempted to gain a run along the fence rounding the home turn, but was forced to work his way to the outside at the 400m. Despite being lumped with 59.5kg, Kinema - who was well backed from $8.50 to start $ finished too powerfully for his rivals to score by a long head from another well-supported runner, the Darren Weir-trained Firenze ($8.50 to $5.50). Another Waller-trained import, Four Carat ($16), who was a hard-luck story in the corresponding race last year, was a half-head away third. The Prince Of Penzance Plate was Kinema s second start in Australia, having finished a 2.9-length fourth in the Geelong Cup. The three that beat him home that day are all engaged later in the day in the Melbourne Cup, including $7 second favourite Oceanographer. Waller would love to think Kinema might be able to return in 12 months to be a part of the Melbourne Cup, but before then he will try to get the Galileo six-year-old into next April s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m). - Racing.com

No Winx, but Van can be the man for Waller The absence of Winx gives five of the horses who finished behind her in the Cox Plate the chance for glory in a $2 million Group 1 race at Flemington on Saturday. The 2000m Emirates Stakes is a revamp of the Mackinnon Stakes and has been moved from the first to the last day of the Cup carnival to attract Cox Plate horses. Of the five in the Emirates, French horse Vadamos finished closest to the champion mare when fourth, albeit almost 10 lengths away. The other Cox Plate runners are Happy Trails, Happy Clapper, Hauraki and Awesome Rock. Although Winx has gone for a spell, trainer Chris Waller will have two runners, stable newcomer Endless Drama and Group 1 winner Vanbrugh. The United States, raced by Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams, is the early favourite but Waller can make a case for his pair. Vanbrugh improved to win a Group 3 race last time, but he needs to improve again at this level, Waller said. But he s a Group 1-winning colt and I m hoping he can show that on Saturday. Vanbrugh, the winner of the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes last year, had his first win since in the Coongy Cup at Caulfield last month. He is $21 in Emirates markets while Endless Drama, runner-up in the Irish 2000 Guineas last year, is a $13 chance at his first Australian start. The Qatar Bloodstock-owned horse arrived with a contingent of European spring carnival visitors and impressed with an eight-length win in a barrier trial at Cranbourne two weeks ago. I think he will appreciate the big Flemington track and I m looking forward to seeing what he does, Waller said. He seems to be enjoying it here, but whatever he does on Saturday, I think he will be a force in the autumn. - Herald Sun. Vanbrugh.
