1 Waller weekly news 5 June 2015 Winx. Boban. Photo: Ross Stevenson. Winx runs her way into history in the Queensland Oaks on Saturday. Where to start?! A week of great results and more broken records for the stable has the team on a high and hopeful of more to come as we head into another promise-filled weekend of racing. Anticipation is also high as Brazen Beau blazes the trail across the world, arriving safely this morning in England. Winx provided a great milestone for the stable, being our 13th Group One winner, 12th individual for the season and 45th to date. Perhaps more importantly however, her incredible Oaks win provided part owner Richard Treweeke with his first Group One winner after more than 55 years racing horses. Not only does this season s Group One tally show the depth of talent we have in our Rosehill and Flemington barns, it s also testament to the meticulous handling and management of each individual s career plus the day to day care and attention they receive from our dedicated and proud team of staff. Winx, our six other winners and other prize-money winners this week all contributed to another record being broken with the stable s prize-money for the past season now more than $23.4 million. The stable has 16 horses apiece entered to run at Doomben and Randwick tomorrow plus racing at Rosehill on Monday and our provincial runners. For the best information on our runners, including our five Group One contenders at Doomben, tune into the video preview and get the word on their prospects straight from the mouth of the man that knows them best (and his trusty side-kick) - link on page four. For a full list of our runners visit the website - We wish you all a safe and enjoyable long weekend and the very best of luck over the next week! 2 CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK WINX 3yo F Street Cry - Vegas Showgirl by Al Akbar Superstar filly Winx produced a stunning display to win the Group 1 Queensland Oaks at Doomben on Saturday over 2200m. Having performed brilliantly to take out the Sunshine Coast Guineas at her previous start, the daughter of Street Cry was sent off a short priced favorite under Hugh Bowman. With a strong early pace, Bowman bided his time towards the rear of the field during the early stages and once the field turned for home, the partnership came with a devastating run down the center of the track to score a truly commanding victory. This win stamped her as one of the best of her generation and with plenty of upside the world is her oyster as she heads to the paddock for a well-deserved spell. Winx joins Kermadec, Preferment and Amicus as the fourth Group One winning 3yo this season selected by our sales team headed up by bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster. She was purchased from Coolmore s draft at Magic Millions for $230,000 to be raced by Peter and Patty Tighe s Magic Bloodstock, Richard Treweeke and Debbie and Paul Kepitis. Press Statement 2yo C Hinchinbrook - Kaaptive Empress by Kaaptive Edition This highly promising juvenile maintained his unbeaten record when scoring at Rosehill on Saturday over 1350m. This success made it two wins from as many starts for the son of Hinchinbrook and he confirmed himself on course for the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes at Doomben on Saturday. Jim Cassidy was in the saddle and he controlled the race from the outset after the pair broke smartly from the barriers. Once challenged in the straight he once again showed a willing attitude to score comfortably. He will go into Saturday s race with plenty of confidence on the back of two impressive victories, hoping to emulate the deeds of his half-brother Pressday who provided a career milestone for Chris, winning the race back in Lucy s Look 3yo F Lonhro - Anything But Love by Flying Spur This promising filly scored a poignant victory for Mrs Agnew carrying the colors of the late Brian Agnew, when scoring at Rosehill on Saturday over 1400m. The victory was also an initial success in Australia for leading NZ apprentice Rory Hutchings who recently joined the stable. Hutchings showed why he was a Group One winning hoop in his home country producing a patient ride to secure the win. He settled Lucy s Look at the rear of the field early on and produced her late in the piece to score a gutsy success. This was a second career victory for this promising daughter of Lonhro from only eight career starts. Both her and the winning rider will be worth keeping an eye on in weeks to come. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, ROSS STEVENSON and darryl sherer for our weekly photos.

3 CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK You ll Never 4yo G Commands - Walk Alone by Honour and Glory You ll Never made it two wins from as many starts this preparation when taking out the Octagonal Stakes over 1400m at Rosehill on Saturday. With regular partner Jason Collett in the saddle, You ll Never settled worse than midfield early on and produced his customary turn of foot in the straight to record a solid victory. The son of Commands certainly pays his way and this victory took his career earnings to just under $500,000 in prize money for racing stalwart Mr Don Storey. Judging by this latest win, he will continue to add to this total. Libidosun 2yo G Haradasun - Libor Lady by Exchange Rate The son of Haradasun made it two wins from just four race-day appearances when winning at Warwick Farm on Wednesday over 1200m. Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and produced a typically patient ride, settling his mount in second last position in the early stages. Once he let down in the straight, this highly promising type scored a strong victory. He is certainly providing plenty of fun for his enthusiastic owners and breeders Michael and Catherine Birchall who are looking forward to his future. Miss Denni 3yo F Pins - Grande Ballare by Giant s Causeway Having been rather luckless in her first racing campaign, this promising filly scored deserved maiden victory when resuming at Warwick Farm on Wednesday over 1200m. James McDonald was aboard this NZ-bred daughter of Pins for owner, Sir Owen Glenn s Go Bloodstock who is also looking forward to Criterion performing at Royal Ascot. McDonald had the filly in a great striking position throughout Wednesdays race and once asked for maximum effort, she quickened away smartly to score a convincing success. Having now broken her maiden status, this lightly raced sort looks ready to build on this victory. Dinghu Mountain 2yo C Snitzel - Layette by Thunder Gulch This son of Snitzel confirmed the promise of a recent trial win when scoring on debut over 1100m at Hawkesbury on Tuesday. Glyn Schofield was in the saddle and he bided his time at the rear of the field early on. They were still in last position in the sevenhorse field with 400m left to run but once asked for his effort, this promising sort picked up strongly to score a very impressive initial success. This good looking type certainly seems to have a bright future judged by this win and should develop into an exciting three year old for next season for Mr Lai. Dinghu Mountain as a yearling, race photo to come.

4 brazen beau diary - touchdown At the time of writing this morning we ve recieved word that Brazen Beau and his travelling companions have safely touched down at Heathrow airport in England and are now in transit to their final destinations. Next week we will have a more detailed update on how he s settled into life in the English countryside as we gear up for Royal Ascot. We wish all of his owners, Darley Stallions and his support crew the best of luck with this exciting colt in the weeks ahead. 5 another modern record The question was simple enough: what is the view like from up there after passing a great in John Hawkes for a modern day record for most group 1 wins in a season? The response suggested Chris Waller is still trying to comprehend his ever-expanding place in Australian racing history. "I still do [look up to the likes of Hawkes] and that won't change," Waller said. Yet these days it is Waller who everyone else is craning their neck just to see. Favourite Winx's Queensland Oaks win - one of the most dominant at the top level in recent memory after being hammered into odds-on favouritism in betting - chalked up Waller's 13th group 1 win for the season. There could still be more to come with live chances in all three group 1s on Stradbroke Handicap day next Saturday - and the Tatts Tiara on the Gold Coast a fortnight after that. But if ever his reach across the racing landscape could be best analysed it is in the fact 12 individual horses have contributed to the 13 group 1 victories this season. Only Royal Ascot-bound Brazen Beau has managed to win multiple majors under Waller's care this season. "It makes you very proud [that statistic]," Waller said. "It means you're training for a lot of owners so we're very proud of that. [But] a good horse makes things look easy. It makes trainers look good and jockeys look good." Winx certainly did that. The result wasn't just poignant for Australia's leading trainer, who edged past Hawkes' modern day feat of 12 group 1 wins in season , but there was also a fair bit of sentiment attached for Hugh Bowman. The Sydney premiership contender lifted his own tally this season to nine, peeling Winx to the outside in the straight and dashing clear to win by three-anda-half lengths from Ungrateful Ellen. But many would argue the ice-cool Bowman would not have had an easier - nor emotional - big race success. "My first group 1 was on this course and distance in the Doomben Cup with Defier for Guy Walter of course," Bowman said. "It means a great deal to me and I have fond memories of that and he's a great friend. "He was a great ambassador for our industry and I miss him. They're hard to win [group 1s] and you need so much to go right. "Ten [group 1s for the season] would be good and you set goals, but realistically a lot of these things are out of your control and you go about doing the best you can with the opportunities you've got. I've had a great season." And so has Winx. The filly was around the mark in the three-year-old sprints and middle distance races during the spring, was second in the Australian Oaks only last month and then fronted again at Queensland to despatch her rivals in the Sunshine State. Yet Waller was quick to pour cold water on the prospect of a tilt at the Queensland Derby next week, preferring to set his sights on the Myer Classic over the mile in the spring. "She owes us nothing," Waller said. "She's been there since the start of the season and she ran second in the Flight Stakes and she ran a second on a very heavy track in the Australian Oaks. I think this is a bit of a bonus as it is. "To take the extra step and run in the Derby... she's got nothing to prove. It won't add to her value, but winning a race like the Myer in the spring might. "When you've got that bit of class and turn of foot... it doesn't matter where you draw they can overcome things. It helps when you've got the extra gear or two." Win'x triumph was hailed in all different manners. Magic Bloodstock's Peter Tighe beamed with pride, another part-owner Debbie Kepitis, a daughter of Waller's loyal stable client Bob Ingham, let out her trademark "woohoos" after her third top level success. And the other? Eighty four-year-old Richard Treweeke was no doubt screaming at the television at home in support of his maiden group 1 after more than 55 years of racing horses. "They're all very, very special," Kepitis said. "All different, but very special." Which is probably the best way to assess Waller's march through the record books. - Adam Pengilly, SMH

6 victorian stable a big assett The stables direct access to the Victorian race tracks through our Flemington stables look an even bigger asset to the stable thanks to Racing Victoria s announcement yesterday. The state is set to benefit from a further $16.5 million in prize-money next season with two thirds of this amount being alotted towards country racing. Full story here. some fun to be had with Miss Denni Miss Denni announced herself as a filly to watch over the winter months after making a big return to racing at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Miss Denni failed to break through in four starts during her debut preparation. She returned to the powerful Chris Waller stable a bigger strong filly and that became even more apparent when she won a recent trial showing good, tactical speed. She s typical of a Kiwi bred horse has taken plenty of time to work it all out, Waller said. The daughter of Pins was on her toes slightly in the mounting yard before James McDonald was legged aboard and the filly began to relax. She took up a handy position albeit a slightly tricky one with McDonald hemmed away on the fence. When the field straightened up, Miss Denni was still behind a wall of horses and just as McDonald looked over his left shoulder, Tim Clark booted up on his inside on second favourite My Fair Lady. But Miss Denni was presented with a gap at the 150m mark and scooted through to score a dominant win over My Fair Lady with Exotherm grabbing third out wide. Once that gap came she really pounced through it and the margin is flattering to the other horses, McDonald said. She could ve won by further but given she was first-up and will no doubt improve, that s probably the perfect run for her. She feels like she ll get over a bit further but even from since I rode her in that trial a couple of weeks ago, she feels like she s improved. They should have a bit of fun with her as I doubt that ll be the last race she ll be winning. Waller will resist any temptation to step Miss Denni up sharply in grade preferring instead to just bring her through the grades. She s improved on how she was last time in and will improve again, he said. - Fox Sports O Leary keen to get a line on Mako Marton horseman Dan O Leary is fishing for further success in Australia. He has strengthened his hand across the Tasman after already enjoying success as a part-owner of the Melbourne and Sydney Cups placegetter Who Shot Thebarman. The crack stayer is currently in pre-training before he returns to Chris Waller s stable where he will meet up with Mako, another O Leary-raced stakes performer. He s a capable horse and the way I look at it is he deserves his chance, he said. O Leary has prepared Mako to win three of his 12 starts and two runs back he dead-heated for second in the Gr.3 Hawke s Bay Gold Cup before finishing sixth in the Gr.3 Rotorua Cup. Waller has accepted with the seven-year-old, who will race as Sir Mako in Australia, in an $A85, metre handicap at Randwick on Saturday with Rory Hutchings booked for the ride. Mako won three of his first four starts before he was side-lined for more than two years with a tendon injury. O Leary is also considering an overseas venture for his talented jumping mare Carinya, who finished runner-up to Amanood Lad in the McGregor Grant Steeplechase. She s only a young horse and she handled Ellerslie really well so there s a chance she might go to Australia, he said. She ll go to Manawatu next and she would have to go really well there again to go over. Carinya was successful just once from 20 flat appearances, but the Golan five-year-old has found her niche over fences with four wins and three runner-up finishes from seven steeplechase starts. 8 GETTING TO KNOW Sergio Otalora From Colombia, Sergio s is a very valuable member of our ground staff and kindly took some time out this week to tell us a bit more about himself and his interesting background... My family s business involves cattle and horse breeding. I learnt to love horses from a very young age. My father taught me to ride at the age of eight. My love of animals led me to start a career in biology but I realised it was not my true vocation. After some time I decided to travel to Australia in search of better opportunities. I started my career in the horse racing business in Patinak Farm (Randwick). I couldn t help falling in love with the animals and the job. After Patinak, I started working for Gai Waterhouse, where I had the opportunity to strap and take care of horses like Almalad, The Offer and Hampton Court. When my time at Gai s came to and end, the opportunity to work for Waller Racing opened to me. I would have never let such an opportunity pass. My goal is to learn as much as possible from top trainers in Australia and in the future, help rebuilding the horse racing industry back in my home country. Nickname? Serg Best quote? One thing to be someone else is a waste of who you are. Favourite part of the job? Strapping horses in races. Favourite horse? Redoutable Heart and The Offer. Best horse ever seen? I had the opportunity to witness Black Caviar the day I was strapping another of my favourites (Tremec). Role model? My Grandfather, a hardworking man. Favourite food? Brazilian BBQ. Favourite jockey? James McDonald. Sergio strapping one of his favourite horses at CWR, the well-named Redoutable Heart. If you weren t in racing, what would you have done? Sit down and cry. No, seriously, probably something related with animals (pets of farm animals). If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? I d like to have Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. After dinner, I ll have a personal futbol match with the two. Event in the world that you would most like to attend? Futbol World cup final and a Dubai world cup carnival. Not sure in which order. What would you do with your last $5? Get an stunner deal in Hungry Jacks. Tip for the weekend? My favourite Jockey on my favourite horse. Redoutable heart for the Queensland Derby. He placed in the last 3 races and jumps now from barrier 2.
