Waller Weekly News 20 April 2018 The team are still over the moon having celebrated a brilliant week s racing with 13 winners for the stable, highlighted by three Group One winners. Winx, Unforgotten and Who Shot Thebarman did the team proud at Randwick when taking out their respective Group One events with records tumbling courtesy of Winx and the fastest ever Australian Oaks winner thanks to Unforgotten. Who Shot Thebarman was a popular winner on the day with the evergreen nine-year-old getting the nod after a photo finish to the elation of the O leary family and his number one fan Sophie. Chris now has 83 wins at the highest level next to his name, aided of course by our talented and dedicated team of staff and connections including farriers, vets, feed companies, spelling and pretraining farms and physios to name but a few. We currently have a number of opportunities to race horses with our team. If you are interested in receiving more information, Liam. We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! INSIDE THIS ISSUE Winners News & photos admin@cwallerracing.com

Chris Waller Racing - Winners This Week Who Shot Thebarman 9yo G Yamanin Vital - Ears Carol by Carolingian This gallant nine year old gained a well deserved victory in the Group 1 Sydney Cup over 3200m at Randwick on Saturday. Regular partner Blake Shinn took the mount once again and he produced a brilliant ride switching the Barman off for the majority of the two mile trip before producing him down the outside in the home straight to get up in the final stride for a thrilling victory. As ever his loyal owners the O Leary family and friends were on track to enjoy this famous occasion. Winx 6yo M Street Cry - Vegas Showgirl by Al Akbar The mighty mare made it 25 straight victories and another at the highest level as she effortlessly took out the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth at Randwick on Saturday over 2000m. As ever Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and as per usual he gave her the perfect ride, settling at the tail of the field early on where she travelled with her usual ease. Bowman made his move around 600m from home and the race was over in a matter of strides as she accelerated past her rivals for a stunning success much to the delight of those on track. Unforgotten 3yo F Fastnet Rock - Memories Of You by Galileo It was a great thrill to see this brilliant daughter of Fastnet Rock take out the Group 1 ATC Oaks over 2400m at Randwick on Saturday for some of our most loyal stable clients. Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and he was once again ice cool as he settled her well off the strong early pace. She travelled nicely throughout and as they turned for home the leader Hiyaam increased the tempo and pinched a break on the field but once Hughie got Unforgotten balanced up she let down brilliantly to put any stamina doubts to bed with an impressive success. She will now go for a well earned break with a view to targeting the Spring features. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Trackside Photography, Ross Stevenson and Darryl Sherer for our weekly photos.

Savacool 3yo F Savabeel - Chilled Out by Anabaa This talanted daughter of Savabeel made it three wins from just six starts when scoring an impressive win at Caulfield on Saturday over 1600m. Regan Bayliss was on board and he gave her plenty of time to find her feet settling towards the rear of the field early on and she was still towards the tail of the field as they approached the final couple of furlongs before staying on strongly to hit the front close to home for an impressive victory. She will now be aimed at the Group 1 Australasian Oaks in Adelaide. Improvise 3yo F Hinchinbrook - Karalee by O Reilly This daughter of Hinchinbrook picked up a nice prize and added to her future value as a broodmare when taking out the Listed Princess Stakes at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday over 1600m. Top Queensland-based hoop Damien Browne was engaged for the mount and he produced a perfect ride, settling her just off the speed early on before producing her with a well timed challenge to score narrowly at the finish. Revolver 4yo G Smart Missile - Sneakerella by Canny Lad This son of Smart Missile returned to the winners circle with an all the way victory at Newcastle on Saturday over 1400m. Rory Hutchings was on board and he shot Revolver straight to the lead when the barriers opened and he travelled strongly throughout before battling on well in the straight to record a gutsy win in the Star Thoroughbred colours. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Trackside Photography, Ross Stevenson and Darryl Sherer for our weekly photos.

Via Veneto 3yo F All Too Hard - Valdemoro by Encosta De Lago This daughter of All Too Hard kicked off her career in the best possible fashion with a win on debut at Newcastle on Saturday over 1400m under Adrian Layt. Layt settled her just worse than mid-field early on where she travelled well before quickening up smartly when asked in the straight for an impressive winning debut in the Vinery Stud colours. Play 3yo F Sepoy - Candy Vale by Bubble Gum Fellow This daughter of Sepoy returned from a spell to carry the colours of her owners and breeder to victory at Newcastle on Saturday over 1200m. Jeff Penza was in the saddle and he settled her in mid-field early on towards the inside of the track. Once she got into the clear approaching the final furlong she let down nicely to get the upper hand close to home. Youngstar 3yo F High Chaparral - Starspangled by Danehill This daughter of High Chaparral recorded her initial success when winning at Hawkesbury on Wednesday over 1500m. Blake Shinn was in the saddle and he settled her just behind the speed early on where she travelled nicely throughout. Shinn angled towards the outside of the leaders as they turned into the straight and she stayed on nicely to hold off stablemate Tunero who ran well in second position. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Trackside Photography, Ross Stevenson and Darryl Sherer for our weekly photos.

Naval Warfare 4yo H Born To Sea - Three Days In May by Cadeaux Genereux This imported galloper recorded his first Australian success when winning at Sandown on Wednesday at his third Australian start. Damien Oliver took the mount on the son of Born To Sea and he was prominent throughout as he raced in second place before coming with a sustained challenge inside the final furlong for a solid success. Hoof Hustler 4yo G Shamoline Warrior - Elusive Quarry by Zabeel This New Zealand bred son of Shamoline Warrior relished the step up to 2400m on the Kensington track on Wednesday. Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and he controlled the race from the outset sending him straight to the front and dictating terms. Bowman quickened the tempo in the home straight and kept him going strongly inside the final furlong to score a gutsy success. Georgica 3yo G Ocean Park - Glitz n Glam by Air Express This New Zealand bred son of Ocean Park relished the step up in trip at his third start back from a break as he scored at Wyong on Thursday over 2100m. Jockey Tye Angland who gave him plenty of time to find his feet back in the field early on and although he looked to be in a spot of bother when held up on the home turn, the gaps opened up soon after and Georgica stayed on strongly for a solid victory. Miss Shanti 3yo F Pierro - Courting Destiny by Noverre This daughter of Pierro broke through for a maiden win at Wyong on Thursday over 1600m under Brenton Avdulla. Avdulla produced a patient ride as he settled her towards the tail of the six horse field early on. He waited until well into the home straight to deliver his challenge and she let down strongly to hit the front inside the final furlong to hold off stablemate Dream Genie who ran well in second.

Unforgettable day for Mulcaster Stable bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster celebrated a great weekend of results along with the team with two Group One winners, another stakes winner and a filly that put herself firmly in the market for a Group One next start. We loved Unforgotten as a yearling and all the way through, commented Guy. She got beaten by Ace High at Kembla first up but we didn t panic and Chris has looked after her, as he does all of the horses. It s easy to pick the horses but it s hard to buy them without the great support we have had from the ownership group. None of this would be possible without them so we are very grateful to them for backing our judgement. In the first year we put the syndicate together to buy a group of horses from Karaka we managed to secure Preferment who is now a four-time Group One winner standing at Brighthill Farm in Cambridge. Since then we ve had the likes of Another Dollar, Scream Park and So You Win. We have a very good system in place with these horses now and they are well prepared in New Zealand before they head over to Australia to do their early work in the Melbourne stable before Chris works out where they fit in and what they will be aimed at. Guy also selected Winx for the stable and to date lays claim to 15 other individual Group One winners. 7 Warwick Stakes renamed Winx Stakes in honour of champion mare WINX could win her own race and break the record she shares with Black Caviar for consecutive wins when she resumes in the spring. The Australian Turf Club on Wednesday announced it has renamed the Warwick Stakes to the Winx Stakes when the race is run on August 18. The $500,000 weightfor-age 1400m race has been won by Winx the past two years as a Group 2 race but it has been elevated to Group 1 status for the new season. If Winx resumes in the Winx Stakes she will be aiming for her 26th successive win, which would be a new Australian record and second only to the unimaginable feat of Kincesm, the Hungarian mare who won all of her 54 races in the 1870s. But part-owner Peter Tighe said Winx is no certainty to run in the race named in her honour. It is all hypothetical at the moment about what races Winx runs in during the spring carnival, Tighe said. Yes, there is a possibility of her running in her own race but the ownership group don t want to put Chris [Waller] under any pressure to run her in it. We have given no commitment to the club, either. We are happy to receive the honour but made no guarantees about the mare running in the race. It is all up to Chris and what he thinks is right for the mare. Winx won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes last Saturday, extending her three-year winning streak and claiming a world record 18th Group 1 win. She left Waller s Rosehill stables earlier this week for a spell of four to six weeks. ATC chairman Laurie Macri said it is fitting for this race to be run as a Group 1 for the time to be named in honour of Winx. We thank and congratulate all of her owners, Debbie Kepitis, Peter Tighe and Richard Treweeke, for allowing us to use this new name for one of our Group 1 races. Racing NSW chairman Russell Balding said Winx transcends racing into the mainstream of Australian sport and the Winx Stakes will be recognised everywhere.

Another Melbourne Cup crack the plan for Who Shot Thebarman Less than 24 hours after watching his pride and joy, Who Shot Thebarman, seal his first Sydney victory in thrilling fashion in the Gr.1 Sydney Cup (3200m), part-owner Dan O Leary admits he is still walking on air. O Leary described the scenes in the aftermath of the win as quite surreal as he fielded the congratulations of hundreds of well-wishers in the Royal Randwick mounting yard. He s a pretty special horse and has a huge fan club both in New Zealand and Australia, he said. When the judge announced the result there was a massive cheer and we were just swamped by people congratulating us. It was a very surreal experience and one we have never had in Sydney before as that was the first time he has ever won here. To do it when he was having his fifth attempt at the race is amazing and I think it is a tribute to the horse and his trainer, Chris Waller. It s just extraordinary. Despite having high hopes for at least a top three finish before the race, O Leary admitted he wasn t confident of a victory as he well remembered the disappointment of previous years. Chris had said to us he thought he could run in the top three but there might just have been one or two sharper than us, he said.

We were definitely hopeful but realistic in that he had been close before and the fact was he was a nine-year-old giving weight to most of the field. I think what played in his favour was the better track. In the past he had been on slow tracks in this race and that made it hard to carry the big weights. This time he had plenty of zip on the better track. You could see that when he started to make his move as he just zipped around them and was practically in front turning for home. He just kept grinding away and stuck his big head out at the right time. Like most Yamanin Vital s he s tough and doesn t give in. I think that is what makes him so popular with his fans as every time he races he gives it his all. It s just a real celebration of courage and people love that. I know we certainly do. Despite the gelding s advancing age O Leary believes he may return to Melbourne in the spring for another shot at the world-famous Melbourne Cup. He likes it in Melbourne and he just gets better with age so there s no reason to think we couldn t go back for another shot at the Cup, he said. We know Chris will look after him and he will tell us whether it is an option or not. He likes it at Moonee Valley, so the Moonee Valley Cup would be the first target and then who knows what could happen after that. Satono Rasen poised for Australian start With Winx having a well-deserved rest, Chris Waller's attention turns to a new dimension to his stable when Japanese import Satono Rasen starts the Australian phase of his career. The six-year-old is one of two Japanese horses now with Sydney's premier trainer and while Admire Winner will be held back until spring, Satono Rasen lines up in Saturday's Group One All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. Waller has a history of assimilating European stayers to Australian racing successfully and will attempt to do likewise with established Japanese talent. Sired by champion racehorse and now stallion Deep Impact, Satono Rasen is expected to be more competitive in Queensland over winter with Waller using the All Aged Stakes as a stepping stone to the Group Two Hollindale Stakes and Group One Doomben Cup next month. "There's been no handicap 1400s around so we had to start him," Waller said. "It's really hard to prepare a horse for Queensland without a run." Satono Rasen has three victories from 21 starts but has not won since the Group Two Kyoto Shimbun Hai (2200m) in May, He arrived in Sydney earlier this year and has had one barrier trial on April 6 when he finished four lengths off Sedanzer over 1030m. "He trialled well and Hughie (Bowman) rode him the other morning and said he just lacks a turn of foot. It's a good starting point," Waller said. He said Japan would be a focal point as it was becoming difficult to source stock from Europe. "They were getting very expensive from England and Ireland and we all know how good the Japanese horses are, hence the reason we bought a Deep Impact at the sales last week," Waller said.

He spent $1.1 million on a filly at the Inglis Easter sale, while Godolphin also spent $1 million on the other Deep Impact filly to be auctioned. Satono Rasen was a $41 chance with the TAB on Thursday as TJ Smith Stakes winner Trapeze Artist continued to dominate the market at $2.25. Waller is also represented by stable favourite Tom Melbourne ($11) and Endless Drama ($26). Tom Melbourne ran fifth in the Doncaster Mile in which Waller thought a wide gate cost him any chance to either beat or finish runner-up to Happy Clapper. He has barrier four of 13 this time around. "I wish he'd drawn this in the Doncaster. He had a tough run in the Doncaster and you always wonder how hard a race like that is on him coming back 200 metres," Waller said. Waller said Endless Drama, ninth in the Doncaster, needed the sting out of the track. "His runs this prep have been good. He needs rain especially over the shorter trip," he said. - AAP Savacool on Australasian Oaks path Sydney filly Savacool has booked herself a ticket to the Australasian Oaks with her victory on a rainsoaked track at Caulfield. Sent south from trainer Chris Waller s Sydney stable, Savacool took out Saturday s Thomas North Handicap (1600m) to provide Regan Bayliss with an early double. Sent off a $4.80 chance, Savacool scored a half-length win over Sheezdashing ($6.50) with Truly Discreet ($9) 2-1/4 lengths away third. Johanne Taylor, in charge of Waller s Flemington stable, said plans were to head to Adelaide. Waller sent Egg Tart to Melbourne last year where she was successful at Flemington before taking out the Australasian Oaks at Morphettville in May. She is on an Oaks path, Taylor said. We wanted her to come here today, get a bit of confidence, hopefully not have too tough a run. She s settled in well and certainly put them away today. Bayliss, who won the Newmarket Handicap on Redkirk Warrior last month before commencing an improper riding ban, returned to riding earlier this week. Savacool s win was Bayliss s third winner back and he said Savacool was a nice staying filly in the making. After her 1400-metre run she was only going to improve up to the mile today and she s still got some improvement to come, he said. AAP

Blinkers to focus Tangled for Randwick Chris Waller hopes the reintroduction of blinkers can sharpen Tangled's concentration so he can improve on a creditable third in the Group One Australian Derby. Waller put winkers on the threeyear-old colt last spring but the gear change did not have the desired effect so Waller is using another strategy ahead of the Group Three Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick. "The winkers caused him to overrace. He's running his races in snatches and sort of stop-starting," he said. Sydney's leading trainer used blinkers on Tangled for the first time during his 2017 autumn campaign which was highlighted by victory in the Group Two Champagne Classic at Doomben. "We feel the horse needs them. If he focuses he could be winning these big races," Waller said during his weekly stable update. Tangled has still had a profitable campaign with placings in the Rosehill Guineas, in which he was runner-up to stablemate D'Argento, and Australian Derby behind Levendi and Ace High boosting his career earnings to $630,325. To be ridden by Michael Walker, Tangled was the $5 second elect with the TAB on Thursday behind the Mick Price-trained Holy Snow. Waller was upbeat about Higher Ground ($7.50) negotiating the step up to Group company for the first time as he heads towards the Queensland Derby in June. "He's won three city races and he'll stay. He's already won over 1900 (metres)," Waller said.- AAP

Hugh beauty as Unforgotten turns tables on Hiyaam in AJC Oaks Hugh Bowman produced a typical first-class ride to get Unforgotten home in the $1m Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick. But after winning three Oaks already on Daffodil (2009), Sofia Rosa (2016) and Bonneval (2017) it was hardly surprising to see the champion jockey rate the Chris Waller filly perfectly after Hiyaam set a cracking tempo up front. Hiyaam beat Unforgotten last start in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill but the extra trip was what was needed and she edged past her rival in the final 100m to win by a length. She s a shining star and today is an example of more to come because she s a very good horse, Waller said. It was a true test, but she s very calm and relaxed and that s what excites me. Unforgotten was impressive in beating up a couple of fields in November before Waller spelled her for an Oaks campaign, but disaster struck first-up when she finished last.

I probably knew in December (she was an Oaks mare) but it all went pear-shaped in her first-up run but she bounced back so quickly with a second-up win and last start was a very good run, Waller said. The only doubts were what causes it. She got a solid bump in the run and it s often something like that which can upset them so that s what I was clinging to. We went back to riding her conservatively. She showed no sign (about running the trip) just ability which gets a three-year-old well ahead of where they can get to as an older horse. Bowman didn t panic when Hiyaam shot out to the lead. I was always confident because I had such a lovely run in transit, he said. I worked her on Tuesday morning so I knew what she was capable of. I knew from the 400m that I had Hiyaam covered, but I wasn t to know what was coming from behind me, but it would have been a monumental effort to come from behind and run me down because she was superb the last 500m. Unforgotten is by a Galileo mare and has Deep Impact blood in her, but Waller wasn t sure what her spring targets would be. It s hard to say. We ve seen how much success we ve had with Winx and we won t rush her to step her up to a Caulfield Cup. We ll just see how good she comes back as a four-year-old first, he said. Matt Jones, The Sunday Telegraph

Winx reaches quarter of century in consecutive wins to join Caviar As Winx made her move, the crowd went with her as did millions more watching around the nation. This was the moment. The champion mare was racing for history and she wasn t about to let anyone down. Winx fever had gripped race fans all week and the huge Royal Randwick crowd was willing her home in the Group 1 $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Saturday. The raucous cheering reached a crescendo as Winx took the lead 200m out. She was racing clear. Victory was hers. Winx s owners embraced, overcome with emotion. Trainer Chris Waller could barely speak. Grown men were in tears. There was a famous Winston Churchill quote when he said: History will be kind to me because I intend to write it. In a sense, this applies to Winx. History will be kind to the great mare because she has written it. Winx ran right away with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes the margin was nearly four lengths on the line but who cares. She had won again. It s hard to find the right words but that was very special, there was an arrogance about it, Waller said. She keeps lifting for the big occasions.

Winx settled last in the 10-horse field, jockey Hugh Bowman content to spot the rest of the field a start. At the 600m, he took the great mare to the outside of the field with clear galloping room. Bowman only needed to use his whip once in the straight. Winx did the rest. Waller said he wasn t concerned at any stage of the race and got the opportunity to enjoy the moment as Winx sprinted past Gailo Chop half-way down the straight. When we were back last I knew we would be OK, Waller said. I just didn t want something taking off at the 1000m or if we lost sight of the leader. But Hughie knows this mare so well, he knows when to make his run and so does she. Winx is a very dominant horse under pressure. It s only in those pressure scenarios that we see the best from her. You can only get the best out of her when she s running against the best. Winx might be a rising seven-year-old mare but it could be argued she has never gone better. The bookies took some risks with Winx who eased out to $1.24 favouritism on track but she romped home nearly four lengths clear of Gailo Chop ($21) with Happy Clapper ($11) running another brave race for third. Winx s legend grows with every win and the record books continue to be re-written. The highlights of the champion mare s win included: HER 25th consecutive win to equal Black Caviar s record. THIS was her 18th Group 1 win a world record. SHE took her career earnings to an all-time record of $18,998,425. BECOMES the first mare to win successive Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Bowman produced another nerveless, tactically perfect ride on Winx but the jockey deflected all the praise to the great mare.

The bottom line is she s got lengths on her rivals, it makes it easy for me, Bowman said. I know I ve got the engine to round them up. She s just an exceptional athlete. There s so many cogs to the wheel and I know I get the dream ride here today, god forbid if something went wrong it wouldn t be a good place to be, but she s so exceptional, she is able to overcome everything and what a pleasure she is for sport. She creates so much attention, I m just so elated, I m so proud of her and I m just so proud to be a part of it. Waller was then asked what the future holds for Winx and whether retirement was a consideration to which the trainer replied: For me or for Winx? I m good for a few more season and she can follow me for a little bit longer, Waller said. Winx had done it. There are moments in life that are etched in the memory forever. The day Winx won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is one of them.
