Waller Weekly News 16 August 2018 Last night at New South Wales Racing s Night of Champions saw the team take centre stage, bagging the NZB Middle Distance Horse of the Year and Champion Horse of the Year Awards with Winx while Who Shot Thebarman received the Emirates NSW Stayer of the Year title. Not to be outdone by his four legged friends, Chris collected the T.J. Smith Award as the leading trainer and for the eighth season was awarded the Bart Cummings Medal. On the racing front this week the team celebrated four winners with Paret and Quick Defence victorious at Rosehill on Saturday while Carano and Star of the Seas were popular winners at Gosford and Canterbury. We currently have some tried private purchase opportunities in the UK and are looking for people to race these with us. If you are interested in receiving more information, Liam. We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! INSIDE THIS ISSUE Winners News & photos admin@cwallerracing.com

Chris Waller Racing - Winners This Week Paret 4yo G Harbour Watch - Enduja by Encosta De Lago This talented son of Harbour Watch has always shown plenty but is starting to put it all together after been gelded. He made it back to back wins when scoring over 1350m at Rosehill on Saturday, drawing early comparisons to former stable star Boban. Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and he dropped him out towards the rear where he travelled strongly throughout. Bowman angled towards the outside of the track as they turned into the straight and Paret let down smartly to score in impressive fashion. He is full of confidence at the moment and looks like he can make his mark at a decent level this preparation. Quick Defence 6yo G First Defence - Quickfire by Dubai Millennium This imported son of First Defence bounced back to form when winning at Rosehill on Saturday over 2000m and in doing so provided a quick return on investment for his new ownership group who had only recently purchased him online through gavelhouse.com with the intention of him continuing his racing career in Tasmania. The decision to leave him with the stable for the time being proved a fruitful one however as Tommy Berry steered him to a narrow success. Berry settled back in the field early on before coming with a sustained challenge in the home straight to score in determined fashion. Star of the Seas 4yo G Ocean Park - Stella Livia by Titus Livius Tony Muollo s progressive son of Ocean Park made it successive city wins when scoring at Canterbury on Wednesday over 1250m under Jay Ford. Ford was positive from the outset and took up a spot just behind the leader early on. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Trackside Photography, Ross Stevenson and Darryl Sherer for our weekly photos.

Star Of The Seas travelled strongly throughout before Ford produced him with a challenge as they turned into the straight. He had to show plenty of guts as he was strongly challenged inside the closing stages but he kicked strongly, making it two career wins from just four starts. Carano 4yo M High Chaparral - Dalkeith by Encosta De Lago This daughter of High Chaparral broke through for a maiden win at Gosford on Tuesday over 1600m. Tye Angland was in the saddle and he rode the perfect race, settling just behind the speed early on. As they turned into the home straight Angland was building momentum on Carano and she stayed on well inside the final furlong to hit the front before fighting off the challengers in determined fashion for a narrow success. McEvoy to ride Unforgotten in Winx Kerrin McEvoy will partner ATC Oaks winner Unforgotten when she tackles her star stablemate Winx in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick this Saturday. The daughter of Fastnet Rock has won five of her nine starts but hasn't raced since her determined Oaks victory on April 14. She was given a quiet trial ahead of her return when unplaced behind Group 1 winner Alizee earlier this month. Spring expectations are high for Unforgotten after she recorded strong figures in the Oaks suggesting she could measure up to a race like the Caulfield Cup - a happy hunting ground for ATC Oaks performers in recent years. A sound return behind Winx could see the four-year-old tighten up from her $26 quote for the $5million feature. Winx, of course, will be ridden by her regular jockey Hugh Bowman. - Racing.com Video preview Click on the image to the left to watch this week s video update with plenty of valuable insights into our runners this weekend from Chris and Charlie.

Racing s Night of Champions - Chris Waller continues to smash records Sydney s premier trainer Chris Waller continues to break records in New South Wales and tonight was presented with his eighth successive Bart Cummings Medal during the NSW Racing s Night of Champions awards held at Royal Randwick. The Bart Cummings Medal point score honouring the legendary trainer who passed away just under three years ago is comprised of votes from leading Sydney racing journalists. With an incredible 189 city winners for the 2017/18 season, Waller easily passed his previous milestone of 169 wins established during the 2015/16 racing season. Waller cleared away in the Bart Cummings Medal point scores with 110 points for the season, well in advance of runner-up Jason Collett (34 points) with Brenton Avdulla finishing third on 32 points. Waller also collected the T.J. Smith Award for Sydney s leading trainer, finishing 95 winners in advance of runner-up, James Cummings. Chris Waller is a trailblazer not just in thoroughbred racing, but in sport, and continues to set new benchmarks, said Mr Peter V landys AM, Racing NSW s Chief Executive. Chris and his team must be congratulated for the professional and dedicated way they go about their business and these accomplishments bear testament to their outstanding efforts. Brenton Avdulla claimed his first George Moore Award for winning the Sydney Jockeys Premiership with 92 wins for the season, finishing 12 in advance of Blake Shinn. Brenton went one better than his second placing last year to Hugh Bowman. Rachel King, now a fully-fledged jockey, took out the coveted Theo Green Award for leading Sydney apprentice with 38 wins for the season. King held off a determined Jean Van Overmeire to win by 3½ winners.

NSW Racehorse Owners award winners were: - Winx (TAB.com.au NSW Champion Horse of the Year and NZ Bloodstock Middle-Distance Horse of the Year) Estijaab (ATC NSW Two-year-old of the Year) Trapeze Artist (International Animal Health Products NSW Three-year-old of the Year) In Her Time (Sky Thoroughbred Central NSW Provincial Horse of the Year) The Monstar (Sky Thoroughbred Central NSW Country Horse of the Year) Redzel (ATC NSW Sprinter of the Year) Who Shot Thebarman (Emirates NSW Stayer of the Year) Prompt Response (Inglis Queen of the Autumn) The NSWROA Committee acknowledged the wonderful service to the industry of the late Mr Noel Bracks by presenting his family with the NSWROA Industry Recognition Award. The remaining Racing NSW award winners were: - Pat Webster (NSW Racing Writers Personality of the Year): The Daily Telegraph s Ray Thomas said: After more than 50 years as a leading trainer at Randwick, Pat Webster has had a careerbest season on the racetrack, preparing Happy Clapper to win three Group 1 races and achieving a lifelong dream of winning the Doncaster Mile. But arguably, Pat s successes off the racetrack have been even more noteworthy. His work with Racing NSW s Racing Mates program where he offers counselling and support for racing industry participants who are suffering hardship, either financially or emotionally, is invaluable and inspirational. He is truly the most deserving winner of the NSW Racing Writers Personality of the Year award. Lindy Wharekura (Sydney Strapper of the Year Peter & Paul Snowden stable): Strapped Moss Trip, Eawase and That s a Good Idea. Snowden Racing commented: Lindy is an integral part of our stable and has excellent horse and people skills. She adores working and nurturing difficult horses, she calms them and has great patience. Lindy treats her horses as her own babies and if one has a temperature spike, she ll check the horse throughout the night to make sure it s OK. Lindy has an affinity with horses and her cats and has been known as the cat lady. Lindy has a diploma in management but prefers to work in the stable. She is a great asset to our business and we are very proud of Lindy. She is a very soft and giving young lady who always cares for others. Epidemic (BOBS Horse of the Year): The James Cummings-trained mare stormed to four city victories during the season three at Rosehill Gardens and one at Royal Randwick. Owned by Godolphin, Epidemic accumulated $78,750 in BOBS bonuses and beat Albumin ($73,125) and her stablemate Savatiano ($67,500) for the award. Final standings for the Bart Cummings Medal: Chris WALLER 34 - Jason COLLETT 32 - Brenton AVDULLA 30 - Hugh BOWMAN 24 - Rachel KING 20 - Kerrin McEVOY 20 - Peter & Paul SNOWDEN 18 Tye ANGLAND, Jay FORD, Josh PARR, Gai WATERHOUSE/Adrian BOTT

Winx draws perfectly in five to face off against 10 rivals in her race Winx s apparent invincibility prompted one fearless punter to place the biggest bet TAB Fixed Odds has ever taken on the champion mare when she resumes at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The punter has placed a massive wager of $140,000 at $1.12 on Winx to win the race named in her honour, the Group 1 $500,000 Winx Stakes (1400m). If Winx extends her famous winning streak and notches her 26th win in a row, the punter will make a $16,800 profit. This is the sixth bet of $100,000 or more on Winx that the TAB s Fixed Odds operation has accepted, but easily exceeds the previous highest wager of $114,000 at $1.10 before the mare won the George Ryder Stakes earlier this year. TAB s Glenn Munsie revealed the $140,000 bet is the only investment made so far on Winx in her comeback race on Saturday, which has attracted a field of 11 runners, including star four-year-old Kementari. I would suggest Winx will stay at $1.12 I doubt very much she will start any shorter, Munsie said. There will be some interest in Kementari, who is rated at $7. A lot will hinge on how both horses parade before the race. The shortest odds ever offered about Winx was $1.08 before she won the George Main Stakes two years ago. TAB Fixed Odds is also operating a Winx out market on the Winx Stakes with Kementari at $1.45 and D Argento at $4. In a boost for the punter, trainer Chris Waller said Winx could not be better prepared for her return. Even after 25 straight wins, Waller still shakes his head at the condition the super mare is in ahead of her pursuit of an Australian record 26th consecutive victory on Saturday.

I just can t fault her, she s spot on, sharp, he said. I shake my head in disbelief most mornings, she has developed in to this big strong, horse that has matured. Having spaced her races thanks to the owners, thanks to my staff looking after her so well, means she is here on Saturday, as a seven-year-old, ready to go. Winx drew barrier five for Saturday, which Waller said was perfect, and while one of only three unplaced runs in her 35-race career has come over 1400m, in the 2015 Surround Stakes, the trainer had no qualms about the distance this time around. Absolutely perfect, she s as sharp as any sprinter, he said. The only time she is vulnerable is when there is no pressure, and that s at trials. Waller said her two trials, and an exhibition gallop at Randwick last Saturday, had removed all the nervous energy and she was primed for this race. She s spot on, she s ready to go, he said. We ve probably put an extra 2 per cent in there somewhere. We didn t take this race lightly, being a Group 1, and fortunately we haven t because it s a strong race. - Ray Thomas, The Daily Telegraph WINX S SHORTEST TAB ODDS OF HER WINNING STREAK $ George Main Stakes $ Chipping Norton Stakes $ Chelmsford Stakes $ Warwick Stakes $ Queen Elizabeth Stakes $ George Main Stakes $ Apollo Stakes $ George Ryder Stakes $ Cox Plate $ Turnbull Stakes $ Chipping Norton Stakes $ Queen Elizabeth Stakes $ Caulfield Stakes $ George Ryder Stakes $ Warwick Stakes $ Chipping Norton Stakes $ Apollo Stakes

D argento ready for take-off in Winx Stakes All eyes will be on the return of Winx on Saturday at Randwick but another of Chris Waller s starstudded team D argento is set to make a statement in the Group I Winx Stakes. The striking grey by So You Think, a Group I-winning colt at three, also makes his seasonal return in the weight-for-age feature. I sort of questioned running him against her and then I thought about it and although he s a good horse, she has to go backwards to get beaten, Waller said. I just see it as a very good starting point for D argento. The trainer indicated D argento will capture the pre-race attention of yard watchers at Rosehill indicating he s matured into a lovely horse and is set to be one of the stable's major players in Group I races this spring. I want to prove him over 1400m to a mile because even though he won the Rosehill Guineas, he s a lot better than that, Waller said. Now that he s matured, you ll see that this prep. Very exciting times for him ahead. Probably the Epsom is the target but maybe even a Makybe Diva. He ll be running in Group Is. Another of Waller s big spring drawcards is Australian Oaks winner Unforgotten, a four-year-old mare that is one of the early favourites for the Caulfield Cup. Waller describes the daughter of Fastnet Rock as a hard horse to get a line on early in a preparation. She s good but she s a hard horse to get a line on from trials so we just don t know where we re at, he said. She let us down first-up last time but she looks great and she s a dominant horse. Her win last time in the Phar Lap was brilliant, her win in the (Australian) Oaks was fantastic. Where does she end up this prep? I don t know but that s the beauty of the spring, there s so many options. We ll see how Saturday goes, step her up to a mile second up and then decide where she s heading. D argento is the $21 third favourite behind Winx and Kementari on Saturday while Unforgotten is a $61 chance. In Ladbrokes' Winx out market (pays on the first horse past the post excluding Winx) D argento is a $4 chance, Unforgotten is at $12.- Racenet.com.au

Who Shot Thebarman 'This is Your Life', part 3 A plain bay colt is how Who Shot Thebarman was described to prospective buyer Michael O Leary in the spring of O Leary, who had a penchant for tough staying types, was told he was mad for buying another horse when the world was gripped by the Global Financial Crisis. At the time a lot of us young dairy farmers were under the pump, Michael recalled. I spoke to my brother Shaun and he said put him aside for four years and he won t cost us a cent, and by the time we come right he ll be away. Thinking back, buying another horse was the last thing I should have done and I remember even good friends of ours were ringing up to tell me how stupid I was. It was the Sunday morning before the late, great Bart Cummings won his 12th and last Melbourne Cup with Viewed that White Robe Lodge welcomed into the world the third foal out of Ears Carrol. Like his two prior siblings, Who Shot Thebarman, both also by Yamanin Vital, was bay in colour. He was just a plain bay athletic horse. A clean, correct horse, White Robe Lodge stud manager Wayne Stewart said. He was a horse with plenty of scope. 11 In the paddock he was probably one of the more athletic types. He was probably one of the picks of the paddock on type. O Leary sent a mare to the stallion in the breeding season of 2009 and when she d been covered and was ready to return home, he had his last thing I should have done moment and contacted Stewart to see what colts the stud had to offer. We were into the jumping game at the time, we d had a few good jumpers so I was looking for a stayer and at the time the Yamanin Vitals were the best stayers and jumpers around our area, Michael said. I d been reading a book called Galloping Greats by John Costello, a book about two champion New Zealand gallopers in the 1940s and 50s, Kindergarten and Mainbrace, and they were both third foals so I told Wayne I d like the third foal out of a mare. Wayne rattled off a couple of mares and he said our neighbours, the Conners, had bought the mother at the last sales. I thought well if it s good enough for Mark (Conners) it s good enough for me. Wayne then told me this colt was out of a Carolingian mare and I baulked. I wasn t real keen on the Carolingians but Wayne told me he d done quite a good job as a broodmare sire. He told me that wouldn t hold him back so I was happy to back his judgement. I remember asking him what he looked like and Wayne said he s bay like all the Yamanin Vitals, clean legs, never have to touch them, no worry horses. He said he wanted $8000 for him so I told him put him on the truck with the other one. That was the story, sight unseen. - Clinton Payne, Racenet.com.au

Black Caviar owner Neil Werrett will be cheering on Winx to break record Even the owner of the legendary Black Caviar hopes Sydney s super mare Winx breaks his star sprinter s winning streak by claiming the race named in her honour at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Winx, the world s top-rate racehorse is aiming for her 26th consecutive win in the Group 1 $500,000 Winx (formerly Warwick Stakes) over 1400m. If Winx wins her comeback race and TAB Fixed Odds have the champion at prohibitive odds of $1.10 already she will set a national record for consecutive wins. She currently shares that record with Black Caviar. Black Caviar owner Neil Werrett says he will be cheering for Winx on Saturday. It s life, things change, and as far as we are concerned we are great admirers of Winx and hope she wins to keep it (streak) going, said Werrett, who is also a part-owner of Sandbar, a game winner of The Rosebud last Saturday. Trainer Chris Waller said Winx has done everything right in preparation for her return to racing. I can t believe how she has come through her gallop at Randwick and trial (last) week and she is ready to go, I couldn t be happier with her, Waller said. She is where we want her going into this race. She will have a couple of gallops on Tuesday and Thursday (this week). We have made sure she is ready for it being a Group 1 race named in her honour. Waller described the renaming of Warwick Stakes after his great mare and then elevating it to Group 1 level as special. There are so many special things about Winx and this is just one of them, Waller said. Waller is chasing his fifth win this decade in the 1400m weight-for-age race, having prepared Winx to win it in after his successes with Metal Bender (2010) and Royal Descent (2015). I take a lot of pride in this race because it has been a good race for us, Waller said. We always have a good representation in the race. Waller suggested he is likely to nominate D Argento, Religify, Comin Through, Unforgotten and a couple of stayers to run against Winx on Saturday. - Ray Thomas, The Daily Telegraph

Winx could be better than ever going into Winx Stakes Chris Waller finds it hard to believe that it s possible Winx could be a more potent racehorse than ever but he s not ruling it out ahead of her return in Saturday s Group I Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. In recent weeks regular jockey Hugh Bowman has made comments indicating that the feel he s getting from the pilot s seat, would indicate the seven-year-old mare could take it to a new level as she builds towards a shot at an unprecendented fourth Cox Plate. She feels stronger than ever, Bowman said after galloping Winx at Randwick on August 4 and I would suggest that s as good as she s ever trialled after her barrier trial three days later. Waller added to the Winx build-up at Rosehill on Thursday by saying, There s a chance, there s a chance that she could be better than ever. It s almost impossible for a horse to get better than Winx but there s a chance, he said. I think there s more chance of her improving than going backwards. Winx went through her paces on the Rosehill course proper on Thursday morning confirming Bowman s words as she cruised up the home straight in her final workout ahead of her racetrack return. I was skiing, Bowman said after the gallop. Saturday will be the first time Winx has raced over 1400 metres since the biggest scare during her 25 win undefeated steak, a year ago when she missed the start and took most of the journey to reel in her stablemate Foxplay in the same race, then known as the Warwick Stakes. We ve concentrated a little harder for a Group I race first-up rather than a Group II, Waller said. You ve got to be ready. First and foremost, we ve done everything to have our horse ready to win. She s been aimed towards this race since she won the Queen Elizabeth back in the autumn. She s got such great speed, such a high cruising speed. If you go back to last year s race I think it s the quickest she s ever gone. She ran home in something like 32 seconds, it could have even been quicker, she might have broken 32 seconds and I ve never had a horse be able to do that in this type of race and that s what makes her so special, she is able to get out of a lot of situations. The best thing about Winx is she performs under high pressure and she can sustain it for a lot longer than normal horses. On Saturday, Winx will be attempting to eclipse Black Caviar s winning streak, ironically, on the day Black Caviar was foaled in Winx is at $1.16 to extend her undefeated run to 26 at Randwick on Saturday.. - Racenet.com.au

How good was it?! The season We ve been checking in with some of the team to get their highlights from last season as well as giving us a heads up on some of the horses they re looking forward to following this season. Highlight? Performer (pictured) winning the Breeders Plate as we are not known as an early two-yearold stable but that got a few heads turning when he won impressively after being slow away and then breaking the time record for that race. Horse to follow? I like the Snitzel - Hollow Bullet. I think he will be a late two-year-old as he s a big, raw type and hasn t quite worked out the game yet, but he is an outstanding mover and gives you the feel of a good one. Daniel Cremin, Trackwork Rider, Rosehill. Highlight? Winx s third Cox Plate in a row and breaking her own track record in doing so. The successful Winter Carnival in Brisbane for the Gold Coast stable was also a highlight. Horse to follow? Zousain. Garry Smallwood, Rosehill-based foreman. Highlight? D argento winning the Group One Rosehill Guineas. Horse to follow? D argento. Del Cheema, pictured with Ombudsman, Rosehill-based foreman.

Paret stamps Epsom Handicap claims Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller has had to wait until the last race at Rosehill to welcome a winner with a horse he believes can step up to Group One company. Paret lived up to his $2.70 favouritism to win Saturday s benchmark 81 handicap over 1350m and stamp himself as a contender for the Epsom Handicap on September 29. Waller likened the four-yearold to 2013 Epsom winner Boban and said he hoped he could go just as far after he swept down the middle of the track to beat Gitan ($14) by 1-3/4 lengths. The Epsom is the target, Waller said. We have been concentrating on getting him to settle and he did that today. We ll look at the Bill Ritchie for him now, which is the same race Boban won before the Epsom. They are similar types of horses. Paret was ridden by Hugh Bowman, who recommended he run in the 1350m race rather than another over 1500m on Saturday. I don t usually get asked my opinion but I suggested the shorter race to try to get him to settle, he said. He did that today and he is ready to step up. The first time I rode him in a barrier trial he was wrapped up more than Christmas but he s fine now. The Group Three Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) is at Randwick on September 15, two weeks before the Epsom. AAP Source of champion Winx along with 15 other Group 1 winners. 16 Rugby and racing royalty collide as All Blacks meet world s best horse A horse and rugby team who are both famous for their winning streaks have traded tips in Sydney. Winx, the world's best horse, and the All Blacks, the World Cup champions, are two of the hottest favourites in Australasian sport this weekend. All Blacks Anton Lienert-Brown, Damian McKenzie, Sam Cane and captain Kieran Read have visited the world's best racehorse at the stables of ex-pat Kiwi trainer Chris Waller in Sydney this week. Winx, who is the No. 1 rated horse in the Longines World s Best Racehorse Rankings, will race for her 26th straight win at Royal Randwick on Saturday and just over four and a half hours later the All Blacks and Wallabies will do battle in the Bledisloe opener an hour across town at ANZ Stadium. The All Blacks current winning streak stands at just eight wins following their loss to Australia in Brisbane back in October last year. But their best is the 18 straight wins racked up between 2015 and If either of Winx or the All Blacks are beaten on Saturday, it will be a massive shock. Winx holds a slight edge in the favouritism stakes. Kieran Read and Winx. She is $1.14 to win the Winx Stakes - a race named after her - but the All Backs are $1.18 in the headto-head market to beat the Wallabies. Waller, who has trained Winx for all of her 35 starts - that have yielded 29 wins - relocated to Sydney 18 years ago. A Hall of Fame trainer in Australia and New Zealand, Waller is one of Australasia s most successful trainers. Winx s profile in the racing world is on a par with the All Blacks brand in the sport of rugby. - Stuff
