2 THE CHAMPIONSHIPS INFORMATION GUIDE The Championships at Sydney s Royal Randwick Racecourse are racing s Grand Finals held over two Saturdays on April 12 and April 19. They feature a dazzling array of races carrying prizemoney of $18 million, ranking The Championships among the great events in world racing. This is the first staging of The Championships, an initiative of Racing NSW and Australian Turf Club and supported by the NSW Government. AT-A-GLANCE Day 1 Saturday 12 April, Royal Randwick (gates open 10:30am for public entry, 10:15am for members) Race highlights include: o $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile the world s richest mile race o $2.5 million Darley TJ Smith Stakes the world s richest open sprint race o $2 million BMW Australian Derby Australia s richest Derby International horses: Two brilliant international horses have been lured to The Championships to compete with the superstars from Australia and New Zealand: - Gordon Lord Byron (Ireland) will run in the $2.5 million Darley TJ Smith Stakes, the world s richest sprint race. An outstanding horse that has raced around the world, Gordon Lord Byron won his first start in Australia with a stunning victory in the $1 million Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill Gardens on March Hana s Goal (Japan) will run in $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile, the world s richest mile. Hana s Goal made her debut in Australia with an unlucky run in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens on March 22 after missing the start badly and will be looking to show her champion qualities at Royal Randwick. She will be ridden by Japanese jockey Kyosuke Maruta, who will be having his first ride outside of Japan. FOR THE RECORD The Mile Championship The Doncaster Mile is one of Australia s most famous races, first run in 1866. It is considered the mile championship of Australian racing.

The Doncaster has been won by many of the best gallopers ever to race in Australia. Past winners include Tobin Bronze (1967), Super Impose ( ) and Sunline (1999 & 2002). Race Record: BELMURA LAD (NZ) Winner: Sacred Falls (NZ), 2nd Pierro, 3rd Norzita (NZ). Time/Track (Heavy). The Open Sprint Championship The TJ Smith Stakes was first run in 1997 as the Endeavour Stakes. The race was renamed in 1999 in honour of Thomas John Smith who won the Sydney Trainer s Premiership on 34 occasions including an astounding 279 Group One races. Leading racehorses trained by TJ Smith included Tulloch, Kingston Town and Gunsynd. The race is the championship sprint race of Australia and in recent years has attracted the likes of Takeover Target and the mighty Black Caviar, whose final race win was in the 2013 TJ Smith Stakes. Race Record: BLACK CAVIAR Winner: Black Caviar, 2nd Epaulette, 3rd Bel Sprinter. Time/Track (Dead). The 3YO Classic Championship The Australian Derby is Australia s premier 3YO classic race. Formerly known as the AJC Derby, it has been run at Royal Randwick since The Derby has been won by great champions Phar Lap (1929), Peter Pan (1932), Tulloch (1957), Kingston Town (1980), Bonecrusher (1986) and Octagonal (1996). Race Record: OCTAGONAL (NZ) Winner: It s a Dundeel (NZ), 2nd Philippi, 3rd Kingdoms (NZ). Time/Track (Dead). The 2YO Championship The Sires Produce Stakes was first run at Royal Randwick in This famous race is the second leg of Sydney s 2YO Triple Crown, the first being the Group 1 Golden Slipper and the final leg being the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. In 2012, Pierro became the sixth horse in Australian turf history to complete the 2YO Triple Crown. Many outstanding gallopers who have won the race include Ajax (1937), Shannon (1944), Baguette (1970), Luskin Star (1977), Octagonal (1995) and Pierro (2012). Race Record: PIERRO Winner: Guelph, 2nd Scandiva, 3rd Overreach. Time/Track (Dead). The Weight for Age Championship The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has developed into one of Australia s best weight for age races. The race dates back to 1851 when it was called the Queen s Plate. It was renamed in 1954 in honour of Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Australia. This race has been won by Australia s most illustrious gallopers including Tulloch (1958, 1960 & 1961), Might And Power (1998), Lonhro (2003) and Grand Armee ( ). Race Record: INTERGAZE Winner: Reliable Man (GB), 2nd It s a Dundeel (NZ), 3rd Happy Trails. Time/Track (Good). The Stayers Championship The Sydney Cup, first run in 1866, is the long distance race of The Championships. It is only one of two Group 1 races in Australia run over the 2 mile trip. This famous staying race boasts many outstanding stayers amongst its winners, including The Barb ( ), Carbine ( ), Galilee (1967), Kingston Town (1980), Tie the Knot ( ) and Makybe Diva (2004). Race Record: JUST A DANCER (NZ) Winner: Mourayan (IRE), 2nd Norsqui, 3rd Aliyana Tilde. Time/Track (Good). 8

9 CHAMPIONSHIP RACE HISTORY The 3YO Fillies Classic Championship The Australian Oaks is the premier staying race for 3YO fillies during the Sydney Autumn. Since 1994 the race was known as the AJC Australian Oaks and more recently the ATC Australian Oaks. Some of the stand-out winners of the race include Light Fingers (1965), Surround (1977), Triscay (1991) and Streama (2012). Race Record: SERENADE ROSE Winner: Royal Descent, 2nd Dear Demi, 3rd Gondokoro (NZ). Time/Track (Heavy). The Fillies and Mares Championship The Queen of the Turf Stakes, as the name implies, brings together the best fillies and mares of the Autumn. The inaugural Queen of the Turf Stakes was run in In 2005, the race was switched from a handicap to weight-for-age event and since then multiple Group 1 winners have joined the honour roll, including Typhoon Tracy (2010), More Joyous ( ) and Appearance (2013) will be the first time the race is run at Royal Randwick over 1600m, having previously been held at Rosehill Gardens over 1500m. Race Record: First time run at this track and distance Winner: Appearance, 2nd Red Tracer, 3rd Streama. Time/Track (Slow). The 3YO Sprint Championship The Royal Sovereign Stakes was first run in 1979, and has been traditionally held earlier in the year as a lead up to the BMW Sydney Carnival. The race has been claimed by a number of top line gallopers including, Lonhro (2002), Exceed And Excel (2005), and Shoot Out (2010). The shift of this race to the carnival proper and it s target to become the 3YO Sprint Championship will see it become one of the premier events on the racing calendar. Race Record: IMA CARPENTER Winner: Rebel Dane, 2nd Urquidez, 3rd Taxmeifyoucan. Time/Track (Dead). The 2YO Fillies Championship Royal Randwick Stakes, originally named the Keith Mackay, was elevated to Group 3 status in 2013 and is targeted to continue its rise to become the Championship race for 2YO Fillies in Australia. In 2011 Streama recorded her first race win in the Keith Mackay and has gone on to triumph in three Group 1 events including the 2012 Australian Oaks and the 2013 George Main Stakes. Complimentary buses depart from Alison Road, Royal Randwick for Central Station every 15 minutes from 4.00pm until 7.00pm. COMPLIMENTARY BUSES - THE STAR A complimentary bus shuttle service will be departing from Royal Randwick to The Star after the races from Bus Bay 4 each day. TAXIS The taxi drop off and pick up point is located in front of the turnstiles (Gate F) via Ascot Street. PARKING Free parking is available in the infield and accessed via High Street. VALET PARKING - $30.00 Valet parking is available via Ascot Street on selected days, please refer to the website. Turn left into Ascot Street off Doncaster Avenue and follow the valet parking sign to the vehicle drop off point. This service can be pre-purchased online or arranged on the race day. LEAVING VEHICLES IN CAR PARKS OVERNIGHT Vehicles may be left in the public car park overnight, but must be collected after 9.00am the next day. Please note that the ATC takes no responsibility for vehicles and its contents left onsite overnight. SMOKING As required by the Smoke Free Environment Act 2000 (NSW) (Act), it is an offence under the Act to smoke in areas designated by the Act as a smoke free area.
