5 FALL RACING CAN TEACH US ABOUT THE NEXT KENTUCKY DERBY by Alastair Bull Appropriately, the official Road to the Kentucky Derby begins at the place it ends, Churchill Downs, with the Iroquois Stakes (G3) kicking the series off Sept. 16. Mid-September may seem a long way from the First Saturday in May to be looking for potential Derby horses. But the Churchill Downs fall meets can provide some good clues. Last year was a prime example. The Iroquois was won by a margin of more than eight lengths by Not This Time by more than eight lengths. But finishing on behind him for second was Lookin At Lee, who would fill the same position in the Derby nearly eight months later. Not This Time would probably have been a leading Derby fancy himself had he not suffered a career-ending soft tissue injury when finishing a close second in his following start, the Breeders Cup Juvenile (G1). The horse that beat him by a neck that day was Classic Empire, who subsequently finished fourth in the Derby and second in the Preakness. As is frequently quoted at Derby time, the only horse to win the Classic without a juvenile race, Apollo, did so in So the Derby winner is in all likelihood racing somewhere as a 2-year-old. Churchill Downs in fall provides as many opportunities to look at potential Derby horses as any. The two meets Sept. 15-Oct. 1 and Oct. 29-Nov. 26 features two open graded stakes races for juveniles (the Iroquois Stakes Sept. 16 and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes Nov. 25), two further graded stakes races for juvenile fillies, two non-graded stakes races, and two stakes for horses by Spendthrift Farm sires. Some Derby winners have come through these races. Super Saver won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) in 2009, and Real Quiet shipped from California to finish third in the same race in But it s not just the stakes races where you ll see potential Derby horses. Street Sense, the 2007 Derby winner, made his debut at Churchill Downs in September, finishing second in a maiden special weight race, while 2001 Derby winner Monarchos s second juvenile start was a third-place finish in a maiden special weight race at Churchill Downs the previous November. Along with the Iroquois raceday Sept. 16, two days at Churchill Downs that are must-sees with the Derby in mind are the two Stars of Tomorrow days, Oct. 29 and Nov. 25. On both days, the entire card is made up of juvenile races. Some of the horses that contest Road to the Kentucky Derby races will be lining up on those days. In all of these races, look for class, and the potential that the horses have to improve over the next six months. Also, look for horses that are still running strongly at the finish of their races it can provide a big clue whether they will stay 1 ¼ miles on Derby day.

6 THE ALLURE OF CHURCHILL DOWNS FALL RACING by Vance Hanson Although synonymous with thoughts of springtime and the Kentucky Derby (G1), Churchill Downs also has a very rich tradition of fall racing that dates back more than a century. For those, like me, who spent their college days in the city of Louisville, it was the fall meet held under the Twin Spires when we d get most of our local racing fix during the school year. Kentucky Derby Week was great, of course, but often coincided with finals and preparations to return home for the summer. There were no such distractions in November, and in the late 1990s we had 24 action-packed days of racing crammed into a four-week window. Gone now are the six-day race weeks, but there s actually more fall racing in Louisville now with the addition of 11 dates in September previously hosted by Turfway Park. That s not only good news for the locals and the young racing fans matriculating nearby, but also bettors that appreciate a strong product. The appeal of racing at Churchill Downs in the fall are numerous. In addition to the occasional Breeders Cup (the next occurring in 2018), the November portion in particular retains its allure as a showcase for two-year-olds, turf racing, and large, competitive fields. With the introduction several years ago of the two Stars of Tomorrow programs (held on the Sunday opener and on Thanksgiving Saturday), Churchill hosts outstanding cards of competitive maiden, allowances, and stakes for juveniles on both surfaces. It is fall and the weather can force surface switches, but for the most part Churchill s fast-draining grass course is able to be used extensively at a time when turf racing in neighboring states is winding down. That, and the closure of nearby circuits for the season, typically ensures larger fields throughout the meet in comparison with other tracks. The most important race of the fall meet is the $500,000 Clark H. (G1), which is scheduled for November 24. Since 2000, the 1 1/8-mile test for three-year-olds and up has seen two threeyear-old titles clinched (the filly Surfside in 2000 and Will Take Charge in 2013) and been won by future champions Saint Liam, Blame, and Wise Dan, two of which won Horse of the Year titles. Last year s emphatic winner, Gun Runner, could add his name to that list this season. The Clark shares the Black Friday card with the Mrs. Revere (G2), a 1 1/16-mile grass test for three-year-old fillies which is typically one of the best betting races of the meet. In the last four years alone, the Mrs. Revere has averaged starters and a $22.25 win payoff. For students and parents alike, doping out the Mrs. Revere can help pay for a lot of tuition.
