Waller weekly news 03 OCTOBER, 2014 Exciting colt Kermadec winning in debut for Neville Morgan. Although it was a quiet week in terms of winners on Saturday, we certainly can t complain as all of the horses still ran well with some good placings and promising runs. It was therefore left to the up-and-comers to bring home the bacon this week and some talented types stepped up in Lucy s Look, Marenostro, Richie s Bickies and Kermadec in Neville Morgan s familiar colours. Looking forward to this Saturday, we have Boban chasing back to back Epsom Handicaps against stable-mates He s Your Man, Lucky Chappy and Royal Descent while in the Metropolitan, won by the stable in 2011 with The Verminator, we have Junoob, Opinion, Bagman and Brigantin. Also at Randwick, three year old fillies Winx and Dynamic Rock have their chance to skyrocket their value as broodmares in the Group 1 Flight Stakes. Interestingly two Flight Stakes winning mares have promising youngsters in the stable in Unearthly (Rio Grande) and Lotteria (More Caviar) while Hawkspur has headed south for the Group 1 Turnbull and will be joined at Flemington on the day by big cups hope, Who Shot The Barman You can see why they call it Super Saturday. Much anticipation surrounds this year s juveniles for the stable with our first to step out getting the opportunity in the Breeders Plate and Gimcrack. With three colts making the field, just one will take the line in Stimac as Feast for Eyes and Austrian will be saved for next week. In the Gimcrack, Flaunting has done everything right to get through to her race-day debut. The ball s now in their courts as to how they will cope and hopefully rise to the occasion tomorrow.. For something a bit different, we have Trade Commissioner on another country cup mission targeting the Benella Cup on Sunday. The imported son of Montjeu secured a mile-stone for Richard Pegum and Gary Towzell last season, winning their first, highly sought after, Wagga Wagga Gold Cup. For more information on Chris s thoughts on our runners, Good luck and safe racing to all tomorrow from the team at Chris Waller Racing! Check out the website for all of our upcoming runners. INSIDE THIS ISSUE WINNERS, A WALK FOR NATHAN THANKS, RELIABLE MAN UPDATE, WALLER MAY TAKE EPSOM DAY DOMINATION TO NEW HEIGHTS PRESTIGE HIRE CARS COMPETITION, GETTING TO KNOW BROOKE TIMMIS, PHOTOS AND LOTS MORE.

CHRIS WALLER RACING CHRIS WALLER RACING WINNERS THIS WEEK kermadec 3YO C Teofilo Hy Fuji (Fuji Kiseki) Warwick Farm, 3yo Maiden, 1400m, 0.4L. Winning impressively over 1400 metres on debut, Kermadec jumped well and settled kindly towards the rear of the field. Hugh Bowman pulled him out with 500 metre mark to run on and he sprinted past his rivals with relative ease. He will certainly come on for the run and we will see him again in three weeks at Rosehill over 1500 metres. Office manager Kerrie O Grady stepped in with the ATC s Daniel O Brien (and part owner in Perplexity) for with winner s photo with Kermadec and Radar in Neville Morgan s absence. LUCY S LOOK 3YO F Lonhro Anything But Love (Flying Spur) Warwick Farm, No Metro Win 1300m, 0.5L. Lucy s Look won the 1300 Handicap on Sunday at Warwick Farm, jumping well and rolling forward to lead. She travelled strongly through the race and quickened up nicely entering the straight to record a nice victory. Glyn Schofield echoed our thoughts in that she may be able to go on to better things in time. Richie s bickies 5YO G Fastnet Rock Graceful Devil (Thunder Gulch) Warwick Farm, BM m, 0.3L. Richie s Bickies managed to get his head in front over 1600 metres beating the in-form stable mate Hollywood Bound back into third. Everything went right for him including the draw, being in barrier two which enabled Glyn was able to get him where he wanted him throughout the race and under a good ride he was steered home to win. He will run again in two to three weeks with a specific race yet to be confirmed. marenostro 4YO G Duelled Maybe Yes (Last Tycoon) Newcastle, Class 1, 1600m, 0.4L. Recording back to back wins, Marenostro jumped well from the barriers and went forward. There was plenty of pace on as two others also had the same plan so we let them fight it out and slotted in behind them. He cruised around the inside and had to wait for his gap to come but when it did, he quickened up nicely through it to win by a length in the Class 1 handicap over 1600 metres at Newcastle. He could probably step up into city now, we just need to decide if we step him up in distance as well or leave him where he is. Thanks to Bradley Photographers Darryl Sherer & Bruno Canatelli for our race day photographs.

A walk for nathan THANKS! Thankfully we didn t have to rely on our betting prowess and have had plenty of generous sponsors donate to the Chris Waller Racing team doing the 4tracks4kids walk this Monday. 4 CHRIS WALLER RACING RELIABLE MAN JUST THAT ON THE TRACK & IN THE BREEDING BARN With exceptional good looks and athleticism, Reliable Man was quick to garner a massive following on arrival in Australia. With a fantastic attitude to match his ability on the racetrack he added the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes to his Group 1 French Derby win before injury cut short his promising career. Now a shuttle sire, he stands at Gestüt Röttgen in Germany and stood his first season at stud last spring at the Gerry Harvey owned showpiece, Westbury Stud in NZ where they have been enjoying welcoming his first foals to the world recently. Westbury General Manager Russell Warwick kindly updated us on Reliable Man s last 12 months while Russell s wife Lesley is the fantastic photographer responsible for the great images below and on Westbury s Facebook Page. It s only early days yet but are you getting a feel for what s typical for his progeny? To date the foals have been very athletic, correct and excellent muscle. Not surprisingly, a large number of his progeny give the indication the will turn grey like their Dad, let s hope they can run as fast too! What has the response to Reliable Man been like from breeders? I am pleased to say that the response to Reliable Man has been just as strong in year 2 as it was in year 1 and he certainly won t lack a good quality of mare in his first two seasons at stud. We are very fortunate to have some very successful breeders as shareholders in the horse and they have been very supportive of the horse in his two seasons to date. What s his attitude like now that he s in his second year in the breeding barn? Reliable Man has a wonderful temperament and has taken to his role as a stallion in the best possible manner, retaining a very laid back attitude to life and proving to be a hit with the ladies! How many mares is he expected to serve this year? I anticipate Reliable Man will cover close to 130 mares for the second year in succession. If Reliable Man was a celebrity who would he be? I think George Clooney - good looking (the girls do like that slightly greying look), talented, charming, and taking his time to find his perfect partner!

Waller MAY take Epsom Day domination to new heights The alarm will go off at 3am as usual on Saturday but there will be an extra spring in his step. It s not every morning you wake up with the realisation that later that day you could train a Group 1 treble at Royal Randwick. But this is the rare opportunity that awaits Chris Waller at the Epsom Handicap meeting, Sydney s biggest raceday of the spring carnival. Waller will saddle up the favourites in two of the majors, the Epsom and Flight Stakes, and has multiple runners in The Metropolitan. Not since the legendary Tommy Smith won three Group 1 race on the same day with Imposing (Epsom), Kingston Town (Spring Champion Stakes) and Snowing (Flight Stakes) in 1979 has a trainer dominated Sydney s signature spring raceday. Gai Waterhouse did train a Group 1 treble in 1996 with Assertive Lass (Flight Stakes), Magic Of Sydney (Spring Champion Stakes) and Hula Flight (The Metropolitan) but the latter was held on the holiday Monday that year. But Waller is not getting ahead of himself, he never does. I don t like building myself up as you can fall pretty hard in this game, Waller said. I try to set my goals for an average day that is what works best for me and then the rest takes care of itself. Although the pressure-meter is ramped up on these big days, Waller tries to stick to his normal routine. He will be at Rosehill trackwork by 3.30am putting his large team through their early morning gallops. By about 7.30am, he is interviewed live by Sky Sports Radio it s almost a Saturday morning ritual. Waller then finishes at the track mid-morning before preparing for a day at the races. No wonder, the trainer generally shuns long nights of celebration even if his horses do win a few majors during the afternoon. I ve got strict boundaries that I stick to, Waller said. My days of going out and partying are well over. I ve got a lovely family to go home to and that means a lot to me. All my owners need to know is that I m doing 100 per cent with their horses. If they want a social trainer to drink beer with and talk rubbish I m not the right person. Racing is a results-driven game and to that end, Waller s single-minded focus is delivering success in bucketloads. He has been the He is now the nation s most dominant trainer and has been the nation s leading Group 1 trainer the last two seasons but it wasn t always like this. Waller recalls the day, only six years ago, when he left Randwick races lamenting another near miss and starting to believe he would never prepare a major race winner. Triple Honour was beaten the barest of margins by Weekend Hussler in the Randwick Guineas, Waller said. I thought we had won but the photo finish said otherwise. I remember driving home that night thinking how will I ever win a Group 1 race? I dead set thought I d never win one. Triple Honour followed his narrow Guineas loss with an ordinary sixth in the Hobartville Stakes and Waller was having second thoughts about the running the horse in the 2008 Doncaster. We could easily have turned him out but we stuck to our plan and ran him in the Doncaster and he was my first Group 1 winner, he recalled. It was the turning point in my career. His win gave the confidence that I was good enough to train at this level. People suddenly think of you as a big-race trainer, not just a midweek and Saturday trainer. Waller has certainly capitalised on his breakthrough Group 1 success with Triple Honour and, in particular, is building an extraordinary record in Randwick miles including: He has trained four Doncaster winners Triple Honour (2008), Rangirangdoo (2010), Sacred Falls ( ). 5

CHRIS WALLER RACING Sacred Falls led home a historic first four for Waller in Doncaster this year as stablemates Royal Descent, Weary and Hawkspur were next three finishers. Waller set an Australian record in a Group race last month when he trained the first six over the line in the Chelmsford Stakes Hawkspur, Royal Descent, Bagman, Sacred Falls, Moriarty and Junoob. He has twice trained the George Main Stakes quinella Shoot Out and Rangirangdoo in 2012, and Sacred Falls from Royal Descent this year. Boban gave Waller his first Epsom Handicap 12 months ago. So, what is it with Waller and feature Randwick miles? You have got to plan for them, the champion trainer said. I think most of our results have come via careful planning and gradually peaking them for the race. A mile is a straightforward distance. A 2000m horse is good enough if kept fresh, a 1400m horse can run a good mile if they are fit enough, and three-year-olds down in the weights are chances so there is a big pool of horses to choose from. At Royal Randwick on Saturday, Waller has four runners in the $500,000 The Star Epsom Handicap (1600m) including the top three in betting $4.60 favourite Royal Descent ahead of stablemates Boban and He s Your Man on the second line at $6. The trainer s other starter is $51 outsider Lucky Chappy. Waller also has the favourite Winx ($2.30) in the other Randwick 1600m feature, the Group 1 $400,000 Flight Stakes. For good measure, Waller has five runners in the Group 1 $400,000 The Metropolitan Junoob ($6), Bagman ($9.50), Opinion ($15), Brigantin ($15) and Our Voodoo Prince ($17). Boban is striving to become only the eighth multiple Epsom winner and the first to carry 58kg or more since the great Super Impose won with 61kg in Waller conceded Boban must improve on his fifth to Dissident in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington last start. His last run was a little disappointing but he could easily have had a win to his name in his first couple of runs this campaign, Waller said. He doesn t have any problems and we took him to the (barrier) trials (last Friday) and it did his confidence the world of good. He s on track for the Epsom. Royal Descent (below right) hasn t won a race for more than 18 months but her form has been excellent including seconds in the Doncaster Mile and George Main Stakes this year behind Sacred Falls. She is going really well, simple as that, Waller said. Perhaps she might be looking for a bit further but we are keeping her as fresh as we can. He s Your Man comes off a Kingston Town Stakes win over 2000m but fits the profile of a potential Epsom winner, according to Waller. Although he is coming back in distance it seems to be a good formula for this race, Waller said. The old-timers say you need a good 2000m horse to win these big Randwick miles so he ticks that box, he has a good turn of foot and he gets in with a lightweight. Lucky Chappy, a Group 1 placegetter in America, ran his best race in Australia when fourth to He s Your Man last start. He s a lightweight chance, Waller said. Even if Waller goes home winless on Saturday night, the trainer will stick to his routine of early mornings and long days. I enjoy my job, Waller revealed. I never open my eyes in the morning and say how am I going to get through this day? These big days like Epsom day are exciting but I look forward to the Saturdays after the Group 1 meetings just as much. Saturday racing in Sydney is fantastic. The jockeys are good, it is clean racing and you get to learn where you are at. Everything in Sydney racing is so professional. Source: Ray Thomas, The Daily Telegraph.

PRESTIGE HIRE CARS WEEKLY $100 VOUCHER DRAW Last week we asked for the most prolific Group 1 winner from the stable with the answer being our old favourite, Danleigh with four to his credit. During my apprenticeship I spent time at many different places with different trainers including Clarry Conners in Melbourne, Allan Stubbs in Tasmania and Johnno Johnson in Orange. After finishing my four year apprenticeship I decided to base myself out of Orange in the central west where I rode as a freelance jockey for four years. I travelled to many interesting places including Enngonia way out past Bourke. One of my favourite wins while out there was the Narromine cup on Rockley Unicorn. In 2007 I moved to Hawkesbury where I once again rode for many different trainers including Tracy Bartley and Garry White. In June 2013 I made the move over to Chris and have enjoyed my time ever since. Nickname? Brookie Best Quote? If at first you don t succeed try, try again. Favourite Part of the job? 9 RECENTLY NAMED HORSES A number of names have filtered through over the last few weeks including a moniker for talented Star Thoroughbreds youngster Duperrey. Pronounced Du...perr..ey, Louis Duperrey was a French navigator who circumnavigated the earth in 1822, studying the stars, meteors and terrestrial magnetism.
