3 "GREYVITY" : the irrestible power felt when meeting the greyhound you end up adopting Hi, my name is Tracy. My fiancé is Adrian and we love animals, spending time with family, the outdoors, quiet nights at home and living life to the full. Since the adoption of 5 greyhounds, our life has changed in so many ways. We could never have known the love of a greyhound unless we had experienced it for ourselves. Coming from renting a home to purchasing our own home 18 months ago we decided to fill our own home with our love of animals. It all started as most discussions go, "so which sort of dogs do you like". The chat went on for a while and we discovered we both admired greyhounds, but did not have any close experience of friends with greyhounds to ask more questions. Story by Tracy Voss and Adrian Van Huissteden I was listening to the radio one day and I heard an organisation advertised called Greyhound Adoption Program. This got me thinking and later that evening I decided to use good old Google and do some research. I ended up joining the Greyhound Adoption Facebook Group where I had a look at the program and enjoyed reading all the events and stories, as well as about how the organisation worked and of course also had a look at the dogs that were available for adoption. Over the next 12 months GAPTas would come up in my news feed on Facebook and I would always have a read of what was happening. Then one day a post popped up about a greyhound by the name of Scooter. I thought gosh he is a handsome boy! After reading the link to his bio, I got quite excited and thought he sounded perfect. I approached Adrian to see whether he thought it would be the right time to add a greyhound to our family. We had a long chat about the pros, cons and also did a fair bit of research on temperament, exercise, diet, size, whether they got on with other animals, life span, health concerns and what type of homes and backyards they were suitable for. Once we were able to tick off these boxes, we contacted GAPTas and asked what we needed to do to meet Scooter. After filling out an adoption form/ questionnaire, later that day, we found ourselves face to face with our first greyhound. I m pretty sure we were more nervous than Scooter. He seemed excited to see us and the lovely Leeanne from GAP gave us a very informative handover about this handsome boy. Now here we were walking Scooter, both thinking greyhounds sure are big! Both of us had only had smaller dogs in the past. What stands out from our first encounter was Scooters manners were impeccable, for a big dog he was walking with a gentle grace, obedient, didn t bark, didn t pull, seemed relaxed, chilled, and... happy. He readily accepted our pats, listened to the sounds of our voices. It only took about 5 minutes or maybe less before we realised we would be leaving with this boy. It was then that we fell in love with this beautiful breed of dog. He was just perfect. A wonderful companion, affectionate, goofy, playful, quiet, energetic yet lazy too. But I think what got us the most are the eyes. So soulful, looking into their inner beauty, the look is irresistible. Any attempt to ignore or not give in is futile. I am sure there lies a conversation in his eyes. When we adopted Scooter they were short on coats, so we got a temporary one and GAPTas told us we could pick him up a new coat at the weekend as they had an adoption day booked in. We had Scooter for a total of 4 days and we were heading off to an Adoption Day. Not something we had ever been to before, so we could get our new boy a special brand new coat. On the drive there Adrian said to me, "now you know there will be other greyhounds there don t you". I responded yes. Adrian then proceeded to repeatedly tell me a dozen times or so that we would not be adopting another dog, we were only going to get Scooter his coat. I agreed, over and over again, and again!! In my mind I never intended to do anything other than pick out a coat for Scootie. When we arrived so many people greeted Scooter. As it turned out he was a popular boy! I can t say I really noticed the other greyhounds as I was so busy meeting lots of new people. I was mingling very proud of our boy when I heard a conversation over my shoulder, which gave me enough concern to spin around. The words I heard were would you like to take him for a walk?" Then, much to my absolute amazement, there is my adamant, "no more greyhounds" fiancé staring lost in the pull of greyvity, the irresistible power felt when meeting the greyhound. And so it began. Another walk and Adrian s only defence was he gave me a look. There was no way I was going home without him. So now we had Scooters coat which had now morphed into a brindle greyhound by the name of Gus!! Yep we went for a coat and left with an extra greyhound and 2 coats!!! Now it s hard to say exactly how we went from 2 to 5. It just sort of happened. 2 3

4 We told ourselves many excuses, like "let s go to the next adoption day so Scooter and Gus can say hello to their friends. Not because as you look deep into their eyes you feel compelled to adopt another one. Our Gussy was so different from Scooter. Gus became our first lounge/bed hog. Scooter had not done this, so it was a surprise to us as Gus made himself comfy on the lounge as soon as he waltzed into the door! Okay!! Our number 3 was our first girl Lara and looking into her eyes melted our hearts as well. Her poise, her ability to be able to find every dog toy in the house and somehow make them end up in her bed and reclaimed as Lara s Toys was her unique talent. She had a dignity and a ladylike manner that set her apart from the boys. Her personality was so different from Scooter and Gus. The next two, Neville and Franky were our first 'foster to adopt' greyhounds. With the support of the Greyhound Adoption Program we were able to transition them to achieve their green collars - proud parent moment! It was by this time we realised we had no two Greys alike in either colour or personality. We had started to think we had done more than adopt 5 ex-racing dogs, that in fact maybe we had joined a cult! During this journey we have met so many wonderful people through the Greyhound Adoption Program. Social walking events every month and the annual Christmas party. The GAP social page is a place where we all connect and share our stories, funny photos and antics of the day. It is also a helpful resource if you need advice from fellow grey slaves. We have also had the privilege of helping out on the National Adoption Day and sharing our love, knowledge, and experience of what it is like waking everyday to the undevoted love of 10 sets of the most adorable eyes you will ever see on a dog. Our life now consists of 5 lean machines, zoomies, random and many flappatacks, usually during the night when waking from a deep slumber. Learning how to do the greyhound shuffle from an unmovable hound, watching the many bed fails, tongues sticking out way beyond where they are meant to be, the whipping of an excited tail, loosing our bed, loosing any lounge space and having to sit on the floor to have a coffee. Trying to survive the look and not feel guilty when we eat in front of them, and learning that the roach is a super comfortable sleeping position. "What we see - look into the eyes of a greyhound and you will feel what love is." Inside every elite athlete is a puppy who wants to play. Plus we have 5 hounds that make us laugh everyday. When they get comfortable with you they pull some crazy poses! Finally, my favourite poem: Pawfect Tales Epitaph to a Dog He possesses beauty without vanity, Strength without insolence, Courage without ferocity, And all the virtues of man without his vices Lord Byron, 1808 We hope to one day see for ourselves what it s like to see a greyhound race. It s the only side we have not experienced. To be able to talk to trainers and owners and learn more about the industry and how greatful we are these owners have given us the chance to give their greyhounds a loving family home.
