2 SUMMER 2014 OneBaSe have been assisting the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Association with submissions in relation to the Inland Revenue Departments review of a number of issues relating to the taxation of bloodstock. This has included meeting with the Minister of Racing and Minister of Revenue to gain their support for the review and with IRD offi cials to identify areas of uncertainty within the current tax regime. OneBaSe and the NZTBA have now received the IRDs initial views on these issues and will work together to evaluate the IRDs position. We anticipate being in a position to contribute to the IRD s interpretation of the current position on these issues, with the objective of providing greater certainty to the industry. OneBaSe looks forward to contributing to the success of the NZTBA, its members and the bloodstock industry. 7 VALE DON MCLAREN Sadly in November, we lost a great contributor to our industry, Dr Don McLaren. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. A member of the NZTBA since 1969, a member of the Auckland Racing Club since 1974 and committee member of the Auckland Racing Club for fi fteen years before serving a term as President in Don served as Chairman of New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing for two years, was elected to the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in 1999 for his services and success in the business community and awarded the honour of a New Zealand Order of Merit in 2000 for his services to animal health and the thoroughbred industry. Don achieved many accolades in his 81 years, one of which was the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Thoroughbred Industry in 2011 from the Auckland Branch of the NZTBA. 7

9 NZTR MEMBERS COUNCIL APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR TO THE BOARD The Members Council of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has appointed Rick Williams to the vacant seat on the NZTR Board following Joe Walls s retirement at the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting held in November. Wayne Guppy, Chairman of the Council, stated: The Council reviewed all applications and agreed to appoint Rick Williams to the vacant seat on the Board and retain the skills of the three directors retiring by rotation, Greg McCarthy, Ben Nettleton and Victoria Carter. Rick will bring enormous racing knowledge and experience to the Board. He has had 30 years of experience as an owner, breeder and manager of commercial stud farms in New Zealand and for the past decade he has also managed The Oaks Stud racing team. Rick graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science majoring in Farm Management, Economics and Marketing. He has managed Waikato Stud, Bloomsbury Stud and is currently General Manager of The Oaks Stud and Manager of The Oaks Stud Racing Team for owner Dick Karreman. Rick served on the Council of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association for seven years. As a BNZ Agribusiness Partner, Keith Lunn understands the financial decisions you re faced with because he s been there himself.
