3 November, 2017 STALLIONS FOR 2018 Dear Breeder As the saying goes, all good things come to those who wait, and for Cheveley Park Stud, that was certainly the case this year! The Qipco Champions' Day festival weekend transformed the year for the stud s owners, David and Patricia Thompson, when their hugely talented PERSUASIVE swooped to victory in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, beating a high class field of Group 1 winners including the 2000 Guineas winner Churchill and the four-time Group 1 winner, Ribchester. Looking to the future, we were fortunate to be able to acquire a significant interest in the beautifully bred ULYSSES, a son of Galileo out of the Epsom Oaks winner, Light Shift. ULYSSES, winner of both the Group 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park and the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York his finest hour to date was bred by the Niarchos Family s Flaxman Stables Ireland Ltd, and will retire to stand at Cheveley Park Stud for the 2018 season. In addition, we are delighted to welcome back Classic winner INTELLO, winner of the French Derby, whose later maturing two-year-olds have already caught the imagination of so many trainers. This has been highlighted by INTELLO s Stakes winner and Stakes placed performers, Sonjeu and Intello Kiss respectively, as well as the promising maiden winners Gabr, Regal Reality and Intellogent. MAYSON has been a model of consistency, with our own Listed winner and Group 3 Stakes performer Dance Diva being one of his four Stakes performers in These also include the promising May Girl, who was third in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, while Laugh A Minute also looks full of potential for next year, having won the Weatherbys Racing Bank 300,000 Two-Year-Old Stakes in impressive style. Similarly, Group 1 July Cup Stakes record holder, LETHAL FORCE had a solid start to his first season with twenty-one individual two-year-old winners at the time of writing, including three Black Type performers, namely, Lethal Steps, Would Be King and Mokaatil. GARSWOOD continued from where he left off in December of 2016, when his first crop of foals were so warmly received, and he turned up the heat again with his athletic yearlings making up to 140,000 guineas. We look forward to seeing his first runners in DUTCH ART has had another solid year with thirteen Group or Stakes performers, including our own Zonderland, who was runner up, by a nose, to Lightning Spear (Pivotal) in the Group 2 Celebration Mile Stakes at Goodwood. Dual Group 1 winner TWILIGHT SON was busy covering a strong book of quality mares in his first season, and we look forward to seeing his progeny in the spring. PIVOTAL continues to impress with yet another Group 1 winner this year in Brando, winner of the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Attention, however, has to be drawn to the phenomenal success PIVOTAL is having as a broodmare sire, with Group 1 success being secured by Cracksman, Rhododendron and Hydrangea, who are all out of PIVOTAL mares. Both Medicean and Kyllachy have both left a significant mark on the industry and are now looking forward to a well-deserved rest in retirement at the stud. 20 MORRIS on Ulysses THERE can be no argument over the identity of the best-bred recruit to the stallion ranks in England in That distinction unquestionably belongs to Ulysses, who represents the triumphant culmination of a breeding programme developed over 35 years and four generations in one of the world s most successful private breeding operations. Ulysses fourth dam was Northern Dancer s daughter Northern Trick, the top middle-distance filly of 1984, when she won the Prix de Diane and the Prix Vermeille before a second place finish in the Prix de l Arc de Triomphe. Mated with dual Derby winner Shirley Heights, she duly delivered Lingerie, dam of dual Group 2 victor Limnos, of Group 1 heroine Shiva (conqueror of Daylami in the Tattersalls Gold Cup), and of Kingmambo s daughter Light Shift, who won a memorable edition of the Oaks in Light Shift s performances earned her the right to visit the world s premier sire, nine-time champion Galileo, and Ulysses was the product of their 2012 union. His impeccable pedigree features crosses within three generations of each parent of both Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector, the two most prepotent sires of modern times. Putting the best to the best does not always produce the best, but in the case of Ulysses the highest hopes were realised. True to his breeding, he proved himself a top-class performer over middle distances, clearly among the best of his generation and at weight-for-age. After a single outing for experience at two, Ulysses soon made his mark as a three-year-old, winning his maiden at Newbury by eight lengths before a luckless run in the Derby, in which he was severely hampered on two occasions.
