I really think that the horse thing is a God given thing for me. If you ask my mom, she will tell you that from the crib I would point horses out when I saw them, on the TV or outside the car. Nobody in my family had anything to do with horses. I had a grandfather apparently on my mom s side that rode, but it s just in my blood. At what age did you start riding? I started riding when I was 7 at rental places. We used to go out to Canoga Park (it was a rental place) and I used to ride the horses out there. Well, I rode out there and then when I was 9 my mom put me in lessons at a place called Fair Hill s Riding Club up in Topanga Canyon in San Fernando Valley. Did you ever own a horse? I got my first horse when I was 13 and his name was Scooter. He was an Appaloosa, 3 years old and bay with a white blanket from his chest to his back, and very spotted. He was about hands. I used to ride all over town on him, bareback. I used to be able to jump up on him because he was small enough unlike any other horses I ve had recently. Did you ever join a Pony Club? When I got my horse I joined the Tarzana Pony Club, and the lady that ran it was down the street from me and we had an arena that was in the backyard of one of our members. We had lessons there once a week with a gal named Joan and it was a lot of fun. We did fun things in Pony Club. I got to go to the Renaissance Fair and ride in that. We did jousting and got to make a costume. I went to a couple of the rallies but never went to camp. So that was my riding world once I joined Pony Club. How did you get your first horse? My mom said I could get a horse when I was 13. I had saved some money from a Sparklett s Water Pic of the Month Sky Smiles! commercial that I had been in. So I used that to help buy him and then my mom paid for his board and he stayed in a backyard in the neighborhood. What motivated you to start a Pony Club in Yorba Linda? We saw a need to have a place where kids could come and enjoy their hobby together and form friendships. Mrs. Kaak and Phantom Send in your cute or funny pictures of your horse or pony by to Kristen at: and maybe your picture will be nominated for Pic of the Month! I only drink Sparklett s Water because that s how I came to be Sharon s horse. This is Scooter.

5 VOLUME 1, I SSUE 2 Page 5 Prologue Hello! Welcome to The Pony Place. I hope you ll have lots of fun here. I m Gemstone, a pink pony with a teal mane and tail and purple hooves. This is my foal Sapphire, a sky blue pony with a teal and purple mane and tail. So, would you like to go see my friends? OK, but first let me tell you a little about this story. In this story you will find out that the pony Apple Tart doesn't have a necklace. Why is that? Well, in the Pony Place necklaces are given to respected horses that have gone through the Horse Academy school. During school, they are supposed to do a good deed. Those ponies graduate as well respected horses by the King and Queen. Any stranger can come up to a horse with a necklace and know they ll be safe. In Prince Rutabaga's case, he is bad but he has a necklace cause he is a prince. The Queen doesn't know this though. Apple Tart doesn't have one because her brother Leavis is bad and the other ponies think that Apple Tart is bad too. Only Sunset is her friend. She looks at Apple Tart on the inside and doesn't judge her by her brother. Apple Tart can t help having a bad brother anyway. Plus, she is too busy running away from Leavis to go to school. Poor Apple Tart. Will anybody else see her the way Sunset does? Chapter 1 Meet The Ponies It was the first day of spring. The snow was melting and icicles made loud pops as they dropped from the trees. Gemstone and Blueberry Cheesecake were watching their foals Raspberry Icing and Sapphire play. Raspberry Icing, a blue pony with a plum colored mane and tail, was running from Sapphire in a an energetic game of tag. Just then a big clump of snow covered Sapphire as she ran under a tree branch. Raspberry Icing laughed and trotted back to help her up. Sapphire got up and shook like a puppy dog. Both Gemstone and Blueberry Cheesecake got drenched with snow. Stop your shaking they neighed and chased after their foals. The sunlight glittered on their sparkling necklaces as they ran across the field. The Pony Place By, Katie Dvorak (age 9) Gemstone heard the pounding of hooves and looked behind her. She saw Apple Tart gallop out of the forest and canter toward her. Leavis was after me! Apple Tart snorted breathlessly. Is he coming this way? Gemstone asked. Suddenly, a shrill whinny came from the hill. Oh no, cried Apple Tart. She ran away as fast as she could for who she saw was her bad brother Leavis. He was planning to chase her again! Had he been spying on her the whole time? Of all the dangers of running alone, she had to run all the way across the valley! Leavis was still chasing her. It was her only choice, she d have to do it. Chapter 2 The Great Chase Nobody had seemed to care that Apple Tart was in danger until Sunset called to see if Apple tart was okay. When she didn t answer, Sunset began to worry so she stopped and called again and again and again. There was still no answer. Sunset was really worried by now. Mean while Apple Tart was totally worn out. She still had a couple miles to go when she ran into Prince Rutabaga. What are you doing here Apple Tart? Said the prince. Being chased by my brother, she said out of breath and then she collapsed. The Queen told me to give this to you. Really? she said in amazement. Then suddenly out of nowhere, Apple Tart galloped off without the gift! Because she had heard her brother s neigh! And the prince galloped after her. But her brother was fast and was speeding up, not having the least sign of tiring out and came up right next to her! Just one more mile and she would be out of Pony Place! But just then something caught her eye. There was smoke coming from behind the hill and she heard a shrill whinny. She saw a yellow and red horse galloping toward her! Then Leavis and Prince Rutabaga were frightened by the stranger and dashed off! Apple Tart was astonished and stood stock still. Hello. said the stranger. My name is Fire Blazer and you are? Apple Tart said she. Thank you for saving me! No problem. said Fire Blazer. But where is your necklace? I don t have one. answered Apple Tart. WHAT? YOU DON T HAVE ONE!! At that moment they both heard a small voice say: Yeah, she doesn t have one Fire Blazer. What s the big deal -stop bugging her about it. Who are you? asked Apple Tart, looking all around to see who was speaking. She was just about to step on an oddly shaped lily pad when she heard a cry. DON T! Huh? What was that? That was me! cried the small voice. You were going to step on me and my house! Apple Tart looked down and to her amazement she saw the tinniest little horse she had ever seen. He was a light green color with pink and purple petals for his mane and tail. I m sorry, said Apple Tart. Have you never heard of me? My name is Lily Pad. said the small horse. He is the tinniest horse in the valley. said Fire Blazer. And he makes beautiful necklaces. Necklaces? You mean the royalty necklaces? I have always wanted one of those. said Apple Tart. Why don t you have one? asked Fire Blazer. I have to earn it by doing a kind and generous act. Apple Tart said. But I have been so busy fleeing from my brother Leavis, that I haven t had time to do anything grand. she replied. An act of kindness doesn t have to be grand. said Lily Pad. It just has to come from the heart. And I think that inside your heart you know just the thing that you should do. Apple Tart listened carefully to Lily Pad s wise words and thought long and hard about what she could do. To be continued in the next issue... She saw a yellow and red horse galloping toward her! Then Leavis and Prince Rutabaga were frightened by the stranger and dashed off! Apple Tart was astonished and stood stock still.

Cut in half if you want to feed four horses. Set this aside. Mix shredded carrot with bran, molasses, brown sugar and sweet feed in a large bowl. Add more molasses or bran to give mixture a stiff consistency. Scoop mixture out of the bowl and press into cored apples. Press fairly tightly. To garnish: Drip a small amount of molasses over the top so it runs down the sides of the apple. Add a sprig of parsley or carrot greens, top with a seedless grape, sprinkle with confectionary sugar and serve immediately! Serve in a feed bucket as this is a gooey treat. Serves two to four horses. Terrific for hiding worming medication or other veterinarian prescribed medicines. ROYAL RIDERS NEWS
