World number one KENT FARRINGTON of the US claimed the $150,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Toronto aboard VOYEUR, a 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Amalaya Investments. [The Nusz family] have been a long-time supporter of my career and bought Voyeur for me with the hopes that he would be a championship horse, said Farrington of the horse that helped him end McLain Ward s eight-time reign of this event. He has been every bit of it and more; he took me to my first Olympic Games where we got a team silver medal, was in the jumpoff for individual gold, and has won a million grand prix events in between. Tonight, he really showed why he s special. (Above) FRANCOIS LAMONTAGNE of St. Eustache, QC, earned the coveted title of Leading Canadian Rider after a number of top-three placings aboard the Leading Canadian-Owned Horse, CHANEL DU CALVAIRE (pictured) and VIGO MASSUERE, including a second in the $87,000 GroupBy Big Ben Challenge on the final evening. To do the international division at The Royal is a dream that I have had since I was a child, said Lamontagne, 33, who also claimed the title of Canadian Show Jumping Reserve Champion on the opening weekend. IAN MILLAR was the top Canadian in the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping, riding DIXSON to fifth place. 3 2017 Royal Horse Show National Jumpers Canadian Olympian AMY MILLAR of Perth, ON, won the $125,000 Canadian Show Jumping Championship for the first time in her career, outriding her dad, Ian, who was gunning for his 13th title in this event. Aboard HEROS, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by AMMO Investments, Amy logged three perfect performances over two days. I just had to keep telling myself to ride well, jump clean, and stay focused, she explained. Every time the thought of qualifying for international week or winning entered my mind, I pushed it away and thought, just concentrate on what you know; ride well and jump clean rounds and obviously it worked! CEALY TETLEY PHOTO (Above) NICOLE WALKER of Aurora, ON, won the Uplands U25 Jumping National Championship riding EXCELLENT B, an eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Gabrielle Buisson. Some speedy performances over tracks charted by Rio Olympic course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil saw her edge Quebec s Alexanne Thibault riding Chacco Prime. I have one year left in U25, and I feel like it s been a great stepping stone in helping me prepare to do bigger stuff, said Walker. I think it s building a strong field for Canada because, as you can see, the riders are getting better and better. I think it s really good for Canada s future. 4 MACKENZIE WRAY of Loretto, ON, won the 2017 Running Fox CET Medal National Final aboard CONTACT, an eight-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Makim Holdings Inc. Wray had competed in the 2016 CET Medal National Final, but finished outside of the top 10, so this victory was especially sweet, considering that as a business administration student at Hartpury College in England, she had minimal time to prepare. I didn t get to ride much; I was back from England for a day and then we came right to the Royal, explained Wray, who is coached by Erynn Ballard. I ve been riding with Erynn for five years now, and I couldn t imagine training with anyone else. She makes you ride the best you can Royal Horse Show Equitation & Hunter Derby ERYNN BALLARD rode Christel Weller s six-year-old mare ENCHANTED to win the $25,000 Knightwood Canadian Hunter Derby with an impressive overall score of 109 and be named Lorna Jean Guthrie Canadian Hunter Derby Champion. She is a very special horse, Ballard remarked of Enchanted, who was purchased in 2016 through Paul Hendrix s Dutch Sport Horse Sales auction in The Netherlands. She s very sure of herself for a six-year-old. To go into that pressure situation and to do so well is great. This was Ballard s 29th year competing at The Royal. CEALY TETLEY PHOTO SAM WALKER, 15, from Nobleton, ON, won the JC Medal National Final aboard MIRACLE, a 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Marion Cunningham. Equitation is a big focus this year; it s a really important part in my riding right now and I look to continue that in Canada and in the States, explained Walker, who is coached by his parents, Scott and Dee Walker, at their Forest Hill Training Centre in Caledon, ON, as well as Missy Clarke and John Brennan while he is competing in the US. 7 2017 Royal Horse Show Royal Round-Up JESSICA PHOENIX, 34, of Cannington, ON, claimed victory in the $20,000 Horseware Indoor Eventing Challenge aboard ABBEY GS, a 16-year-old Canadian-bred Trakehner mare owned by Charlotte Schickedanz. The pair posted the fastest penaltyfree time of the night over the course set by Capt. Mark Phillips to move up from second place following the initial round and seal the win. Abbey GS is such a fantastic jumper, and she s so brave and so bold that I couldn t have thought of a better horse to bring tonight, said Phoenix. It s so fun to be able to demonstrate this incredible sport in front of this many spectators, which is something that we don t often get to do. BRANDON MCMECHAN, 35, a chiropractor (human and equine) who lives in Toronto, ON, and OSCAR S WILD, his eight-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, were the only other entry to jump clear both nights. They placed second overall. US Olympian BOYD MARTIN and Christine Turner s 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare KYRA finished third in their Royal Horse Show debut, recovering from five penalty points on Friday night to jump clear on Saturday. It s unbelievable; I had no idea that the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair was this awesome! exclaimed Martin. I would have come many years before had I known. I got to experience the food, and the cows, and the pigs, and the goats. I probably spent way more money than I should have in the trade fair, and then finally got to the riding. 62 HORSE SPORT February

8 For the second consecutive year, Rio Olympian MEGAN LANE of Loretto, ON, and her partner, CARAVELLA, swept the $20,000 Royal Invitational Dressage Cup, presented by Butternut Ridge. The 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Lane co-owns with her mother, Cathy, and sister, Kelsey, scored % in the Grand Prix and then % in the Freestyle, to a routine designed by Joost Peters of the Netherlands. It s a tricky choreography, and Caravella was great! said Lane, 26. I love it here. The Canadian crowds are great to ride for; they re very supportive, yet respectful, of dressage. Crowd favourite JACQUELINE BROOKS of Mount Albert, ON, took second place in the $20,000 Royal Invitational Dressage riding D NIRO, her 2012 London Olympics partner, an 18-yearold Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Mary Brooks and Brookhaven Dressage Inc. 9 2017 Royal Horse Show Breeding Classes Winner of the Governor General s Cup was NOIR DE NOIR (Cabardino x Penny Black V), owned by ULLA BROOKS and shown by GARRY ROQUE. The filly, whose barn name is Lola, also placed second in the Lieutenant Governor s Cup, ridden by Kristjan Good. Lola s full sister, Cafe Noir ( Mocca ), won the LG Cup and was second in the GG Cup five years ago. Brooks has been breeding Canadian Sport Horses since 2008 at her Wyndalways Farm in Caledon, ON. Her good mare Penny Black is a British Sport Horse bred in England by the eventing stallion Washington Postman, who was ridden by Matt Ryan. Cafe Noir was Penny Black s first foal. Penny Black has been an absolute onein-a-million. She did everything for me and now her babies are doing the same, said Brooks, who shows Cafe Noir, who was OHJA Low Ad/Am Hunter champion in 2016 and Low A/O Hunter in Of the lovely prospect Noir de Noir, she says, She is easy, level-headed, perfect, and wants to do everything you ask. She hopes Lola follows in the hoofsteps of her big sister. We re hoping for a hunter, but we haven t jumped her yet; we were waiting until after the Cups. SHAWNA RINZLER-JOHNSTON had just one wish for the Cup classes that her three-year-old homebred mare, BELLPHINA (Bon Balou x More Fun) would earn a ribbon. I was amazed when she pinned third in the Governor General s class. When she got called in the Lieutenant Governor s class in first, I was so shocked I had tears running down my face, said Rinzler-Johnson, who has a small breeding operation at her Carmaz Stables in Moncton, NB. Bellphina s dam More Fun, who passed away in the spring, had been Rinzler s show hunter and had won numerous high-point titles in the Maritimes. Bellphina had been stabled with Rinzler-Johnston s friend Willa Gauthier at Someday Farm in Ontario since Thanksgiving and Marti Embree prepared and rode her at the Royal. Marti did a great job of getting her conditioning up to the level it needed to be. With three kids, I wouldn t be able to dedicate the time Bella needed to be ready. It was a great decision. ~ Tracy Hanes Grand Champion TB Colt/Stallion was TWISTED AFFAIR, owned by CATHY MCEWIN and handled by THERESA DETSIKAS, The five-year-old stallion (Leonnatus Anteas x Sugar Gloss) also won the Ontario Jockey Club Challenge Trophy.
