The Official News of the Jumping Committee January 2017, Volume 13, Issue 1 IN THIS ISSUE LETTER FROM THE CHAIR to potentially joining our Canadian Show Jumping Team in the future. Young Guns! Profiling Mackenzie Wray Winter Equestrian Festival Photo Gallery Profiling the Jump Canada Hall of Fame s Newest Inductees Canadian Success Stories 2017 Equestrian Canada Rules Now Available Online Rule Change Suggestions Now Being Accepted Michelle C. Dunn January and February are not usually a rider s favourite months unless they happen to be showing on one of the sunshine circuits south of the border in the U.S. The days are short (but already growing longer) and the cold and snow often prevent us from riding regularly. However, spring is not far off and more winter days are behind us now than remain in front of us. Yet again, the organizers of the Winter Equestrian Festival have expanded the popular Under 25 Grand Prix Series. Now under the title sponsorship of Hollow Creek Farm, who generously sponsored the annual Children, Junior, and Young Rider Nations Cups in the past, the Under 25 Series will include ten events in 2017 versus the seven held last year. Prize money has also been increased, and all of the classes, with the exception of the Team event, are now FEI-sanctioned. This Series is a great stepping stone for the next generation of show jumping athletes, and its popularity continues to increase among up-and-coming riders from around the globe. In the opening week of competition, 66 riders competed in the $25,000 Hollow Creek Farm Under 25 Grand Prix. We wish all our riders, and in particular our Under 25 competitors, the very best of luck this winter. Let s go, Canada! 2017 Jumping Talent ID Program Longines World Rider Rankings Acknowledgments The southern circuits are underway, and many Canadians have traveled down to Thermal in California or to Ocala or Wellington in Florida to show for a few months. One of our newest programs, the JC Under 25 Series, kicked off this year at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. This program, only slightly over a year old, was conceived by Jump Canada as a pathway for up-and-coming jumper riders to get on the radar, so to speak, by allowing them to track their position in the rankings against other riders of the same age group across the country. The Under 25 program, overseen by Beth Underhill, also gives our High Performance Committee the opportunity to watch for new talent coming up through the ranks. Some of these riders will eventually be joining our Next Generation riders tours in Europe to gain valuable experience with an eye Pamela Law Chair, Jumping Committee 1
YOUNG GUNS! PROFILING MACKENZIE WRAY by Emily Riden When the Ricoh Coliseum, home to the Royal Horse Show, is not being used for top-calibre equestrian competition, the footing is replaced by ice and the sporting equipment becomes hockey sticks instead of horses. However, at the 2016 Royal Horse Show, there was one young rider who would have felt just as comfortable with either scenario. On the ice, Mackenzie Wray of Loretto, ON, is a talented junior hockey goalie, and in the horse show ring, she is making her mark as a highly-competitive rider. She further cemented her position as one of the country s top up-and-coming young riders to watch in November when she clinched victory in the 2016 Jump Canada Medal Final. The high school senior is quick to acknowledge that any major victory, including her own in the Jump Canada Medal Final, does not come without hard work, dedication, the right horse, and a supportive team behind the scenes. Cealy Tetley For Wray, that s meant implementing an altered school schedule that allows her to ride in the late afternoon, complete her homework, and grab a bite to eat before heading off to a hockey practice or game. It has also meant aligning herself with noted trainer and past Canadian Show Jumping Team member, Erynn Ballard, as well as finding the right horses, namely Wray s two current mounts, Contact and Castor. This is my third year training with Erynn Ballard, said Wray, 17, who started riding at the age of nine with Gord Munro of Foxbury Farm before joining Ballard at Looking Back Farm. I love the barn. It s always so organized. I always understand what I m doing, and Erynn just does her job so well. I love riding with her. Wray began competing in the Jump Canada Medal classes three years ago under the guidance of Ballard, who herself won the Jump Canada Medal Final in In 2015, Wray finished sixth in the Jump Canada Medal Final and, in 2016, became Ballard s first student to claim a Jump Canada Medal Final victory. It took 19 years to win it again! joked Ballard. It was pretty exciting! Mackenzie and her parents are big supporters of the sport, and this is their goal collectively, as a team. In working to achieve that goal, Wray and her family acquired her Jump Canada winning mount, Contact, as well as Castor, a ten-year-old gelding, at the end of In 2015, she only went with one horse, and we talked at the end of The Royal noting that she was at a disadvantage by only Mackenzie Wray of Loretto, ON, on her way to winning the Jump Canada Medal Final riding Contact at the 2016 Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. 2
having the one, Ballard explained. For 2016, we had a plan. She had two horses and qualified for the Jump Canada Medal, the CET Medal, and the 1.20m Junior Jumpers. We definitely stuck to our plan, and it all paid off! Wray saw great success with both horses throughout the 2016 competition season. However, being only seven years of age, Contact was the one whose accomplishments with Wray were particularly noteworthy. Contact just started the equitation (in 2016), so he s green, said Wray of the Holsteiner gelding owned by Makim Holdings, Inc. I didn t expect any of this out of him. He s been awesome. He s the best horse ever, and I m so lucky. Ballard had competed the gelding in the First Year Green Hunters and in hunter derbies throughout 2015 before Wray took over the ride in I think he s done a lot as a seven-year-old, said Ballard, who is one of only three Canadians to ever win the ASPCA Maclay Medal Final, the pinnacle of equitation competition in the United States. This is his first year doing the equitation, and he qualified in the Jump Canada and the CET. It s always nice having one that s been in our program, and it s nice having one that I made up. Even though he s seven, he s been with us for two years now. So, he was ready; we knew his mentality was good here. The year 2016 marked not only Contact s first year in the equitation divisions but also Wray s first year making the move to the 1.20m Junior Jumper divisions aboard Castor. Now, Wray is looking forward to climbing the ranks in the same manner shared by numerous other Jump Canada Medal Finals winners. It s pretty far off, but I d love to do the team for Canada, Wray said. On her way to that goal, Wray plans to attend university and study business while also continuing to play ice hockey. However, she predicts that the horses will always hold the majority of her focus. Equestrian Canada Mackenzie Wray following her Jump Canada Medal victory. Jump Media 3

PROFILING THE JUMP CANADA HALL OF FAME S NEWEST INDUCTEES The tenth edition of the Jump Canada Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala, presented by BMO Financial Group, was held on Sunday, November 6, 2016, in Toronto, ON. Another soldout event, over 300 attendees gathered at the Liberty Grand to celebrate four new inductions into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame. Michelle C. Dunn Each month, we will be profiling the new inductees. Our first celebrated inductee is Elizabeth Bordeaux in the category of Builder, whose lengthy list of tireless volunteer efforts are unlikely to ever be matched. Builder (Individual): Elizabeth Bordeaux Elizabeth Bordeaux embodies the spirit of a true volunteer, having selflessly served the national equestrian federation for more than four decades. Among her varied and countless roles, the highest profile has been her work with Jump Canada. A member since its inception in 1998, Elizabeth served as the second Chair of the Jump Canada Board for six years, stepping down in As head of this large committee whose purpose is to govern hunter and jumper sport at the national level, Elizabeth was the epitome of preparedness and patience, with an uncanny ability to present all sides of a situation while simultaneously steering her committee towards a conclusion that best served its membership. In recognition of her immense contributions to the Jump Canada Board, Elizabeth was honoured as the Jump Canada Volunteer of the Year in It marked the second time that Elizabeth had been recognized for her volunteer efforts by the national body. As the past Chair of the Equestrian Canada (EC) National Rules Committee, Elizabeth was celebrated with the EC Volunteer of the Year Award in It is interesting to note that her dedication and commitment to the sport is shared by her husband, Corlin Bordeaux, who received the Equine Canada Volunteer of the Year Award in Inducted into the category of Builder (Individual), Elizabeth Bordeaux receives her Jump Canada Hall of Fame award from John JT Taylor, Past Chair of the Jump Canada Board. Michelle C. Dunn Elizbeth Bordeaux was joined by her family at the Jump Canada Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala. From left to right: Janet Gilray, Stuart Gilray, Corlin and Elizabeth Bordeaux, and Ann Gilray. Missing was Barbara Gilray Wiebe. As a former rider as well as a judge and steward, Elizabeth has a well-rounded and balanced knowledge of the sport. She grew up riding in Montreal under her mentor, Barbara Kemp, who encouraged her to pursue her status as an official. Elizabeth became an International Equestrian Federation (FEI) jumper judge in 1990 and, as a steward, was also very active, working at everything from Arab to dressage shows. Having moved to south-western British Columbia, Elizabeth continued to ride for years with the Fraser Valley Hunt. Due to her personal experience and intimate knowledge of the many facets of equestrian sport through her role as an official, Elizabeth was a natural choice to chair the hunter-jumper rules committee. That led to her being named Chair of the EC National Rules Committee, where her passion for language and grammar has made a huge impact on our sport. She took on the arduous task of rewriting the rules, many of which were quite convoluted, putting them into plain language that was easy for both competitors and officials alike to understand. Renowned for her impeccable grammar skills, Elizabeth has served as a member of the editorial committee of The Warm-Up Ring, the official newsletter of Jump Canada, since its inception in Painstakingly reviewing the written contents each month, Elizabeth, who had taught at community college, ensures that The Warm-Up Ring s editorial content is of the highest standard. Committed to giving back, equestrian sport is not the only area where Elizabeth has volunteered her time, but many would argue that it has benefitted the most. Hard-working, dedicated and respected by her peers, Elizabeth is a class act greatly deserving of induction into the Jump Canada Hall of Fame. Presented by Sam-Son Farm 6
CANADIAN SUCCESS STORIES Courtesy of Kim Kirton SIERRA UCCI PEDDIE Sierra Ucci Peddie of Oro Station, ON, opened the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL, with a win in the $1,500 Low Adult Jumper Classic. Held January 15 during week one of the 12-week circuit, Peddie, 23, and her 14-year-old gelding, Big Easy, topped a starting field of 31 entries by being one of eight combinations to advance to the jump-off. Under the tutelage of trainer Kim Kirton, Peddie and Big Easy delivered another clear effort in a time of seconds to finish ahead of Megan Fitzgerald who crossed the timers in seconds. Jump Media SARAH BAGWORTH Sarah Bagworth guided Goldfinger vd Hengstenpoel to victory in the $2,500 Engel & Völkers High Amateur-Owner Jumper Power and Speed class held January 20 during week two of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. Bagworth, 26, of Toronto, ON, and her ten-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare (Winningmood van de Arenberg x Fantastique) bested a starting field of 34 entries to take the win, and also took home the High Amateur-Owner Jumper Reserve Championship title. ESI Photography JOHN ANDERSON John Anderson and Terrific kicked off the HITS Coachella Desert Circuit in Thermal, CA, with a victory in the $75,000 Back on Track Grand Prix on Sunday, January 22. Anderson, 50, of Calgary, AB, and the 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Marlon x Lux) were one of five combinations to jump clear over the track set by course designer Martin Otto, and clinched the win as the only pair to again post a clear round in the jump-off. Anderson took the win over fellow Canadian, Tamie Phillips, riding Cat Balou. 7

RULE CHANGE SUGGESTIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED It is the right of every EC Sport Licence Holder to suggest amendments to the rules, subject to the current policies, procedures, and schedules. Therefore, along with publishing the 2017 EC Rules, the Online Rule Change Suggestion Portal is now open, and rule change suggestions will be accepted until May 31, The submission of Rule Change Suggestions is the first step in an annual process that provides the equestrian community with the opportunity to become engaged in the rules process and join the effort to ensure EC rules continue to protect safety, welfare, and fair play at EC-sanctioned competitions. All EC Sport Licence Holders are invited to submit suggestions for rule changes. At the close of the suggestion period on May 31, 2017, all submissions will be reviewed by discipline experts and the EC National Rules Committee in order to create 2018 Rule Change Proposals (RCPs). The RCPs will then be posted to the EC website for a 30-day review and comment period. During this time, all competitors, officials, and coaches are encouraged to read the proposals and offer comment. Next, there is a review of all pertinent comments for consideration when modifying, correcting, or withdrawing any RCPs prior to publication of the 2018 rules.
