The Official News of the Jumping Committee May 2017, Volume 13, Issue 5 IN THIS ISSUE Equestrian Canada Welcomes Peggy Hambly as President Canada Takes Third in Mexican Nations Cup Educational Series Unveiled for Canada s Next Generation Tiffany Foster Named Vice President of North American Riders Group Canada s Only FEI Nations Cup Final Qualifying Event Returns to Thunderbird Going, Going, Gone! Fundraiser for the Next Generation Canadian Success Stories Longines World Rider Rankings Acknowledgments LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Michelle C. Dunn As our Canadian show season gets underway, it makes me think of all the various roles that volunteers play in our sport. Of course, we have many paying jobs in our industry, too, such as officials, office staff, ring crew, grounds maintenance, etc. However, the heart and soul of our sport remains with our many volunteers. Our Jumping Committee is comprised of nine volunteers. Every one of them is an expert in their respective field when it comes to our sport. They all have real jobs in the industry as well such as horse show management, equine dentistry, coaching, riding and training, public relations, officiating, etc. They give their valuable volunteer time to keep our sport running like clock-work, and use their creativity and industry knowledge to produce programs that benefit our membership such as Medal programs, bursary programs, feature classes, etc. The range of responsibilities is vast. The volunteers on your Jumping Committee manage our finances and keep us within budget while fielding strong teams on the international stage. They make sure our rules are updated, when necessary, with the help of other volunteers who form our Rules Committee. We look to one of our experts on the Jumping Committee to give us guidance in matters pertaining to promotion and media relations, a crucial role in these fast-paced times. Officials get their start or are upgraded to a higher level based on the input from our Officials Committee, also comprised of volunteers. When we celebrate our fellow equestrians, who pulls together our wonderful Jump Canada Hall of Fame Gala each November? Why, our volunteers, of course! They do everything: engage sponsors, book the venue and plan the menu, produce wonderful tribute videos on each inductee, have trophies engraved, hire musicians, write speeches, create a seating plan, and decorate with style. In most provinces, there are Hunter/Jumper Associations comprised of more horsemen volunteering their time. They are responsible for some pretty creative thinking on your behalf! They run programs pertinent to their area s needs, and usually put on a fun evening of prize giving and awards at the end of each season to keep you coming back for more! Back in the old days, no one got paid to run a horse show, keep track of entries and prize money, or be at the back gate. Volunteers played all of those roles. Times have changed, and horse shows have become a huge industry that employs thousands of people. But behind the scenes are hundreds of equestrians giving their time to ensure that your riding or showing experience is a positive one. The next time you re chatting with someone who sits on a Hunter/Jumper Association committee, an Equestrian Canada or Jumping Committee, or volunteers in another way, say thanks to them for giving their time. Also, consider becoming a volunteer yourself. There is so much to be gained from the experience, including a new perspective on horse showing. Enjoy your show season! Pamela Law Chair, Jumping Committee 1

EQUESTRIAN CANADA WELCOMES PEGGY HAMBLY AS PRESIDENT Equestrian Canada (EC) named Peggy Hambly of Guelph, ON, as its new President, effective April 27, Hambly is the first female President in the history of EC following the resignation of previous President, Jorge Bernhard of Clarksburg, ON. Bernhard submitted his resignation as EC President on April 23, 2017, but will continue to support EC as a Director on the Board. The role of EC President demands and deserves a significant time commitment, and due to personal commitments and new business obligations, I am no longer able to devote the time and effort required to fulfill these responsibilities, explained Bernhard, who first joined the EC Board as a Director in 2015 and was elected President in April 2016 during the EC Annual Convention in Montreal, QC. Bernhard continued, It has been a privilege to serve as President of Equestrian Canada. I would like to thank the Board for their support during these changing, challenging, yet productive times at EC. I also wish to thank Eva Havaris, the EC staff and those in the community who supported me during my time as EC President. I look forward to continuing to serve EC and the equestrian community in my capacity as a member of the Board. In his term as EC President, and moving forward in his return to a Director position, Bernhard applies vital knowledge and experience in the areas of business and sport. A long-time sponsor of Canadian eventing athletes, Bernhard has been an active supporter of the sport of eventing for over 15 years. Professionally, he has operated an international metal trading business for more than 20 years, bringing a diverse range of multi-national business acumen to the EC Board. Recognizing Bernhard s contributions, EC CEO Eva Havaris stated, On behalf of the EC Board and staff, I would like to thank Jorge for his leadership during a very challenging time for EC as an organization. For the past year, Jorge has been instrumental in helping EC through a time of transition and renewal. Havaris also spoke to the introduction of Hambly as EC President, saying, I am thrilled to welcome Peggy Hambly as EC President. The EC Board and the federation as a whole have been fortunate to benefit from Peggy s depth of experience, involvement and dedication to the equestrian industry for many years, and to have her become EC s first female President is a well-deserved honour. Peggy understands the many nuances of the federation and the community as a whole, and her history of involvement and commitment to the fundamentals embodied by EC s new By-laws and governance model will be invaluable to EC moving forward. Hambly has been connected to EC for nearly 30 years, and is the current owner and operator of her family s Glenarden Farms, which specializes in raising, training and competing eventing horses. She is also an FEI 1/2* Technical Delegate and Level 3 National Technical Delegate. A long-time volunteer within the equestrian community, Hambly is a former member of the Horse Trials Canada Board of Directors, and Past President of the Ontario Horse Trials Association. She first joined the EC Board of Directors in I m extremely excited to be the very first female President of Equestrian Canada, said Hambly. I d like to start out by giving my sincere gratitude and respect to Jorge Bernhard for his tireless work over the past year to help EC move along the path to a stronger and more efficient governance model. Now it is time to honour the progress of the federation by pulling together and completing the governance changes that we collectively created and started implementing more than two years ago. By working together through collaboration and communication we can finish with a solid, unified, and strong federation. We have a few challenges left for sure, but I truly believe our glass is three-quarters full now. We can do this and be proud. For more information on the EC Board of Directors, visit 2

Anwar Esquivel The Canadian Nations Cup team. From left to right: Keean White, Vanessa Mannix, chef d equipe Mark Laskin, Ali Ramsay, and Chris Surbey. CANADA TAKES THIRD IN MEXICAN NATIONS CUP The Canadian Show Jumping Team earned third place in the $600,000 MXN FEI Nations Cup held May 5, 2017, at the CSIO4* Coapexpan in Xalapa, MEX. Comprised of Vanessa Mannix of Calgary, AB, Ali Ramsay of Victoria, BC, Chris Surbey of Calgary, AB, and Keean White of Rockwood, ON, the Canadian Team earned third place after finishing on a two-round total of 34 faults. White anchored the Canadian Team to its third place finish, riding his 2017 World Cup Final mount, For Freedom Z, a 12-year-old Zangersheide gelding (For Pleasure x Baloubet du Rouet) owned by Angelstone Partners. For Freedom has been very solid for me at major competitions around the world the last year, and it s a great feeling to have such a reliable partner, said White. Competing over a course set by 2016 Rio Olympic course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil, White and For Freedom Z left all the rails in place but exceeded the time allowed of 78 seconds for a single time fault. They again jumped clear in the second round and beat the clock to achieve one of only three clear rounds posted on the day. It was very exciting to anchor the Canadian team; it s an honour to represent Canada at such an incredible event, said White, 34. The team spirit this week has been incredible, and it s a great feeling to know your teammates are behind you. The pathfinder for Canada was Surbey, 30, who also attended 2017 FEI World Cup Final and was Canada s top finisher in 18th place. For the Nations Cup, Surbey was partnered with Cavarola, a ten-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare (Corland x Wellington) owned by Linda Southern-Heathcott and Spruce Meadows Ltd. The pair incurred 12 faults in the opening round, but returned in round two to lower only the c component of the triple combination for four faults. 3

Mannix, 28, was paired with Grand Cru vd Vijf Eiken, her 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion (Contact van de Heffinck x Heartbreaker). The duo had a strong start to the two-week competition in Mexico, winning the Procter & Gamble Grand Prix Cup on Sunday, April 30, during the CSI4* Coapexpan. In the first round of the Nations Cup, Mannix and Grand Cru vd Vijf Eiken had a refusal at the open water jump, incurring four jumping and four time faults. In the second round, they lowered one rail at fence 11, a 1.60m vertical immediately following the water jump, and came in just over the time at seconds for a total of five faults. Anwar Esquivel Ramsay, 25, was riding Hermelien vd Hooghoeve, her ten-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Thunder van de Zuuthoeve). The pair incurred 12 jumping and one time fault in round one and had four rails for a total of 16 faults in round two. Counting the best three scores in each round, Canada finished on a total of 34 faults. The $600,000 MXN FEI Nations Cup was won for the second consecutive year by Mexico I, who led throughout the two rounds and finished on 16 faults. The United States placed a close second with 17 total faults. The Canadian athletes were supported at the CSIO 4* Coapexpan by Chef d Équipe, Mark Laskin, and Equestrian Canada Manager of Jumping, Karen Hendry-Ouellette. Keean White of Rockwood, ON, led Canada to a third place finish aboard For Freedom Z in the CSIO4* FEI Nations Cup held May 5, 2017, at CSIO4* Coapexpan in Xalapa, MEX. After adding another 80 points in Coapexpan, Canada is currently sitting third overall in the standings with 160 points. The United States leads with 180 points, while Mexico is second on 170. The third and final FEI Nations Cup qualifier will take place on June 2 during the CSIO4* Odlum Brown BC Open at the Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC. A total of 13 riders contested the class held on Sunday, April 23, with Gainey topping the list with a score of 82 earned aboard Chabadue, owned by Asta Torokvei. Victoria DeMore Photography CASSANDRA KAHLE British Columbia native Cassandra Kahle riding Blue earned wins in both the $25,000 Fox Lea Grand Prix and the $5,000 Welcome Stake at the Fox Lea Farm Spring Concours I held from April 27 to 30 at Fox Lea Farm in Venice, FL. Courtesy of Vanessa Mannix VANESSA MANNIX Vanessa Mannix of Calgary, AB, marked her two-week Mexican tour with a win in the CSI4* Procter & Gamble 1.50m Grand Prix held Sunday, April 30, during the CSI4* Coapexpan, Mexico. Mannix and Grand Cru vd Vijf Eiken, her 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion (Contact van de Heffinck x Heartbreaker) were one of five combinations from the original 41-horse starting field to advance to the jump-off, where they were the only pair to again jump clear to capture the win. Mannix celebrated her win with her groom, Will Simmons, and trainer, Conor Swail. 7

Seven of the original starters advanced to the jump-off over the course set by Bernardo Cabral of Portugal, and it was Ballard who shot to the top of the leaderboard with a double clear effort in a time of seconds to take the win.
