THE STUMP July 2017 Ontario Farriers Association President Paul Miller Vice President Tom Barnett Treasurer Dale Gladwin Secretary Jonathon Taylor Directors Adam McQueen John Edwards Mark Struthers Jess Paverly Welcome to the Ontario Farriers Association. Promoting further education and community for the farriers of Ontario since July

From the president.. The annual convention for the Ontario Farriers Association this past April was fun and educational. Ben Mangan came to judge our competition which was day 1. He talked about what he was looking for in a quality shoe and went over all of the specimens with the competitors. Moving on to Day 2, Ben spoke on hoof balance; the fundamentals and importance of the trim. After achieving what you can with the trim there is a lot you can do with your most basic shoe modifications to get your hoof the rest of the way to where you want it. Ben went over some incredibly handy techniques for modifying your shoes to include heart bars that are very adjustable as the hoof changes, block heels with or without an inner rail, all using those off cuts of steel we all have hanging around the shop anyway. Ben also demonstrated some of these techniques on a horse with a pesky toe crack that recurs. On behalf of the Ontario Farriers Association I'd like to extend a huge thank you to all those who attended our annual convention in Navan, Ontario last weekend. It was a really great bunch of people and I found that everyone was open and willing to participate and it's that attitude that helps us all in our constant search for education and community. A very special that you to Ben Mangan who came up from New York to help is with sensible and effective approaches to our common problems. 3
We are very grateful for the support that has been consistently provided by Professional Farrier supply and Marechalerie Bromont as well as Kevin bacon, Farrier Distribution Products and Mustad. We are very excited to welcome new board members, Dale Gladwin as our Treasurer, Jonathan Taylor as our secretary and Mark Struthers and Jess Paveley as new directors. It is with regret that we lose Brian Hyodo who has been a tremendous asset the association and we are grateful for the tireless work of his sister Lyn Hyodo who has helped us selflessly and enthusiastically. We greatly appreciate the community of Navan, the Navan fairboard and the Navan curling club who worked so hard to make the event welcoming and successful. Johnny Edwards was a star in organizing this event and he also deserves many congratulations for earning Jim Smith award by being a mentor for farriers, encouraging community support, Further education. We look forward to the upcoming year and hope to see more of you all at the various events we will be a part of in the seasons to come. Paul Miller CF APF President Ontario Farriers Association 4

The Canadian Farrier Team update From Sean Elliott Well this spring has been busy, I can t believe we are half way thru the year At the beginning of May, the AMFQ hosted the Master Cup, St. Hyacinthe, QC. This was the competition that was chosen to pick the 2017 Canadian Farrier Team from. Despite the raining weather they had an impressive turn out of competitors. At the end of a soggy weekend the 2017 team was announced Congrats! John Dixon British Columbia Sara Vanderpol Ontario Justin Fountain British Columbia Jack Ketel British Columbia Johnny Edwards Ontario After being picked the team sat down and put a game plan together 6
2017 CFT Competition List Rumble in the Broncs, Brooklin, Ontario Warwick- International Team Horse Shoeing Comp. shire, England World Horseshoeing Classic Lexington, Kentucky The first competiton on the list has come and gone. The team held their own, with only having one day of practice together prior to Rumble in the Broncs. Once again, as was the case in Quebec, Mother Nature gave us lots of mixed weather to deal with 7

The Rumble in the Broncs The annual Rumble in the Broncs, horseshoeing contest once again took place at the Brooklyn Spring Fair in early June. This year saw the largest turnout of competitors that it has ever had. Between the novice, intermediate, and open divisions there were over 50 competitors. The field was comprised of farriers from Eastern and Western Canada, the United States, and South Korea. This included the Canadian farriers team, American farriers team, and the World Championship Blacksmiths team. In addition, former world champion, Craig Trnka was there competing. Even with such a large pool of competitors, organisers Stewart Bruce and Sean Elliot kept things running smoothly and on time. With that volume of competitors and horses coming in and out of the tent, that is no easy task. No doubt one of the draws for all of the competitors to attend was judge, Iain Ritchie. Iain is a native of Scotland but resides in Vancouver. He has many accolades including being a multiple time Canadian champion and respected judge of many prestigious competitions. Things got underway on Friday morning with Iain giving a clinic. He trimmed and shod the front feet of a horse with handmade concave shoes. The horse used for the demonstration had one ideal foot and one not so ideal. Iain took time to discuss his approach with everyone and favored a basic approach to trimming and shoeing both feet. After the clinic wrapped up the Junkyard forging class took place. This fun class is held as a memorial to the late Jesse Goff, as this was always his favorite event. Two person teams had to select an item from a pile of scrap steel and forge it into a horse shoe. It was amazing to see the quality of shoes being produced! The day finished up with Stewart Bruce hosting a social evening at his farm. Mad scientist, Tom Barnett kept everyone entertained and safe, with another spectacular anvil blast. Just like it sounds, he blasted an anvil high into the air using a fabricated steel base and black powder. It really must be seen to truly appreciate!! 10
On Saturday and Sunday the competition was underway. The open competitors worked in pairs for 3 or their classes. There was journeyman class with fullered shoes, a roadster class, and a tool and fullered class. One team member was responsible for the front foot and one the hind foot. The exception to this was the draft class held on Saturday with teams of 4. The tent was full for this event with 7 draft horses lined up for shoeing. The World Championship Blacksmiths team of Lamar Weaver, Chris Madrid, Robert Jukes, and Tom Peterson was the commanding winner of the draft shoeing. At the end of the weekend awards were handed out. The winning team of the open division was Lamar Weaver and Tom Peterson. Intermediate winner was Jonathan Taylor and the novice winner was Ja Kyeong of South Korea. Judge Iain Ritche, Lamar Weaver, Tom Peterson 11
