Dunn November is almost upon us and that means another fabulous edition of Toronto s iconic Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is just around the corner. Equestrians look forward to The Royal with great enthusiasm every year, eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the entries accepted list to see if their name appears. The Royal is the grand finale to the show season, with champions in many different divisions being crowned in Toronto. There is nothing quite as prestigious in our hunter, equitation and jumper world than earning a championship title at The Royal! This year, show jumping fans are in for a real treat as newly-crowned Olympic Champion Nick Skelton of Great Britain will be bringing his gold medal partner, Big Star. It will be the pair s only appearance in North America this fall, giving enthusiasts a great opportunity to see them in action together. Another 2016 Rio Olympic Champion, Michael Jung of Germany, will be making his first-ever appearance in the $20,000 Horseware Indoor Eventing Challenge, which will be a very exciting addition to the line-up. In addition to cheering on our Olympic athletes, we will also have the opportunity to see the stars of the future as The Royal debuts the inaugural Under 25 Championships this year. This new program, created by the Jumping Committee, has proven to be a great success under the leadership of Beth Underhill, and we look forward to showcasing our up-and coming athletes. As The Royal s motto goes, Once a year, country comes to the city. What a wonderful experience for city children to learn more about agriculture, including where their food comes from and the hard work farmers put into their produce. If you ve never ventured further than the Horse Palace, take a stroll around to visit the dairy and beef cows as well as the sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, and many other animals showcased at The Royal. It truly is a fabulous learning experience for us all. See you at The Royal! Pamela Law Chair, Jumping Committee 1

Young Guns! Profiling Ali Ramsay by Lauren Fisher Ali Ramsay of Victoria, British Columbia, set her sights on the top levels of equestrian sport at a young age. The now 25-year-old began riding at a horse camp at the age of six and has never looked back. She trained with Judy Cumming and Joanne Orchard in her hometown of Victoria throughout her junior years, competing in the hunter and equitation divisions. She then found her love for show jumping and, four years ago, took the next step and began training with 2008 Canadian Olympic team silver medalist Jill Henselwood at her Juniper Farms in Oxford Mills, ON. Ramsay moved across the country, coming from Victoria to live just south of Ottawa, near Henselwood s farm, in April of Training full-time with the reigning Canadian Show Jumping Champion, Ramsay has made leaps and bounds in her riding, soaking up every bit of knowledge that Henselwood has to offer. Following her move to Ontario, Ramsay quickly rose through the ranks to the grand prix level. This summer, she realized her dream of representing her country when she made her Nations Cup debut riding for Canada at CSIO3* Samorin, Slovakia. She continued her fantastic season by claiming her first win in FEI-sanctioned competition in September, emerging victorious in the $36,000 CSI2* Caledon Cup Phase Two at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament in Caledon, ON. Earlier in her riding career, Ramsay won the Running Fox CET Medal Final, the pinnacle of national equitation competition, at the 2012 Royal Horse Show in Toronto before focusing solely on show jumping. Until this summer, Ramsay had only competed in North America, so riding for the first time in Europe was a big accomplishment and a major steppingstone in her career. That was a really cool experience! said Ramsay of riding alongside Brian Morton, Chris Surbey, and Vanessa Mannix. We had a really great team and it was something I never would have imagined that I would get to do, so it was pretty crazy. Slovakia was amazing. The horse show in Samorin was really cool. It was probably one of the nicest shows I have ever been to, so it was a great experience. Ramsay s Nations Cup debut, as well Jump Media Ali Ramsay competed at the Spruce Meadows Summer Series in preparation for her Nations Cup debut at CSIO3* Samorin, Slovakia. as that of her first FEI win, came aboard Hermelien vd Hooghoeve, her nine-yearold Belgian Warmblood mare (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Thunder van de Zuuthoeve). My horses are amazing, said Ramsay enthusiastically. Hermelien is the one that I have had for the longest, two and a half years, and she is the one that I have been jumping the big classes on. I bought her when she was seven, and we bought her assuming that she had the scope, but you never really know what they are going to become. I do not know how I got so lucky with her. She is incredible, and I feel like she can do anything. In addition to Hermelien, Ramsay owns Disarrono, an eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Quasimodo van de Molendreef x Voltaire). Ramsay purchased both horses from Dutch Olympian Emile Hendrix in The Netherlands and has brought them along under Henselwood s guidance. I bought Disaronno one year ago, said Ramsay. We kind of bought him to be a back-up for Hermelien, and to eventually move up to be a second grand prix horse. He is taking a little longer to develop than she did, and he is proving to be a little 2

quirkier in ways, but I think as long as we are patient he is going to be pretty cool, too. He can just be a bit of a roller coaster. Though Ramsay studied business for one year in Vancouver, she knew that school was never going to be her strong suit and decided to pursue her equine education instead. She now lives in an apartment with fellow riders close to Henselwood s farm and focuses completely on her riding and competitive career. When I had the opportunity to train with Jill, that just made me realize that this is my life, explained Ramsay, whose roommates over the years have included fellow Canadian Young Guns Jaclyn Duff and Elizabeth Gingras. I consider this to be my university education because this is what I want to do in life. Eventually, I would like to have my own business, so this is my school. Jill is amazing, continued Ramsay. I have learned an unbelievable amount since I started riding with her, and I have changed completely as a rider. I was jumping 1.20m when I moved and started riding with her. Within a year I was winning in the 1.40m classes, and within two years I was jumping in grand prix. I feel like she has taught me the top of the sport. With a well-earned reputation for developing younger riders, Henselwood is renowned for her teaching ability, as Ramsay has discovered. She is so passionate about everything that she does, Ramsay added. She focuses a lot on your position. She says that everybody should ride like Beezie Madden or Marcus Ehning. It has been four years now, and I feel like I almost have the position that she is looking for. She makes you ride with your body more. With the hunter and equitation background that I came from, I always want to do everything with my hands, but she has taught me to use my seat, and leg, and my body to be more in unison with the horse. While working on her own position, Ramsay has also developed her horses, and worked with Henselwood to improve their flatwork. Right now we are working on building topline work, said Ramsay of her dayto-day training. We do a lot of flatwork, trying to build the body and make them stronger. The flatwork is for me, too; this is what I need. I feel like I am pretty natural when it comes to jumping, but my flatwork is something that we have really been focusing on. It helps to improve my riding, to help my horses focus, and to improve their jumping, too. Ali Ramsay won her first FEI-sanctioned competition, the $36,000 CSI2* Caledon Cup Phase Two, in September at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament in Caledon, ON, riding Hermelien vd Hooghoeve. Cealy Tetley Ali Ramsay won the Running Fox CET Medal Final at the 2012 Royal Horse Show riding Alonso. While her training focuses on strengthening and improving, Ramsay hopes to continue building on her experience abroad and her recent FEI win. I just want to stay consistent, she said of her future goals. It would be cool to show on another Nations Cup team next year. Mostly, consistency is key. Hopefully I can continue enjoying the grand prix classes. It is also always nice to win, so that is usually my goal! Ramsay spends much of her time competing in Canada, including at the Caledon Equestrian Park just north of Toronto and Calgary s Spruce Meadows. In the winter months, Henselwood s barn travels to California to compete in warmer weather at HITS Thermal. Other regular stops on her annual show schedule include the newly-introduced Royal West in Calgary, as well Toronto s long-standing Royal Horse Show. Show jumping fans would be well-advised to keep an eye out for this emerging young rider as she competes throughout North America and continues to move up the ranks. 3

Tiffany Foster Leads Canada to Third in BMO Nations Cup in Calgary Starting Gate Communications Tiffany Foster of North Vancouver, BC, posted the only double clear performance in the $300,000 BMO Nations Cup riding Victor, owned by Artisan Farms and Torrey Pines Stable. Tiffany Foster of North Vancouver, BC, led the Canadian Show Jumping Team to a third place finish in the $300,000 BMO Nations Cup held Saturday, September 10, at the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament in Calgary, AB. Starting Gate Communications Foster, Kara Chad, Amy Millar and Eric Lamaze produced a total score of 23 faults to finish third among the ten countries contesting this year s $300,000 BMO Nations Cup. Following an exciting jumpoff, Switzerland prevailed to take its first BMO Nations Cup victory over Brazil, the defending champions. The two countries were tied on a total of 18 faults following two rounds of jumping to necessitate a tiebreaking jump-off that saw Alain Jufer jump clear riding Wiveau M to secure the win for the Swiss. Foster, 32, was the only rider in the entire field to jump double clear over the tracks set by two-time Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios of Venezuela. Making the feat even more impressive, Foster Calgary s Kara Chad, 20, made her BMO Nations Cup debut riding Bellinda, owned by Stone Ridge Farms Ltd. 4

Starting Gate Communications Starting Gate Communications Amy Millar of Perth, ON, was clear in the second round for Canada riding Heros, owned by AMMO Investments. From left to right: Amy Millar and Heros, Tiffany Foster and Victor, Kara Chad and Bellinda, and Eric Lamaze and Check Picobello Z. was the first rider on course in Saturday s competition riding Victor, a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Elmshorn x Grandeur) owned by Andy and Carlene Ziegler s Artisan Farms in partnership with Lamaze s Torrey Pines Stable. I know Victor so well, and that makes a big difference in a situation like today when you have to go in first, said Foster, who was also double clear riding Victor in the only other Nations Cup competition held on Canadian soil this year in Langley, BC. I m so proud of Victor. The good ones rise to the occasion, and he s a champion. Foster has competed in every BMO Nations Cup held at Spruce Meadows since 2011, including in 2014 when Canada emerged victorious. Foster, currently ranked number 24 in the world, noted, This is the first time I have ever been double clear at the Masters. That is a really big moment, and something that I am very proud of. Andy and Carlene Ziegler mount us on these incredible horses and let us pursue our dreams. They are here this weekend, and it was so cool that they got to see this. Twenty-year-old Kara Chad had the pressure of not only making her BMO Nations Cup debut, but doing so in front of her hometown crowd. Riding in front of a record-setting audience of 89,701, Chad produced scores of five and nine faults riding Bellinda, a ten-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare (Namelus R x Hors la Loi II). Chad and Bellinda, owned by Stone Ridge Farms Ltd., served as the traveling alternates for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. As the third rider in the rotation for Canada, Millar, 39, of Perth, ON, was aboard her 2016 Rio Olympic mount Heros, a nineyear-old Belgian Warmblood gelding (Canadian River x Clinton). Having incurred eight faults plus one time fault in the opening round, Millar returned to jump an impressive clear and keep Canadian hopes alive in the second round. Having won an individual bronze medal and led Canada to a hard-fought fourth place finish at the Rio Olympics riding Fine Lady 5, it was Lamaze s turn to rely on his teammates after his mount, Check Picobello Z, a ten-year-old Zangersheide gelding (Cardento x Orlando) owned by Artisan Farms LLC and Torrey Pines Stable, proved to be less than cooperative. The pair finished with a total of 12 faults in the opening round before retiring the second time out. You have good days and you have bad days, and Eric had a bad day because his horse became very difficult out there, said Foster, who trains with Lamaze, as does Chad. For him to even complete the first round, you have to hand it to him. For anyone watching, it was a lesson in how to persevere and how to get through to the end, because you never know if his score is going to be needed or help for the next round. He s our leader, and we have a lot of respect and admiration for him. Canadian Show Jumping Team chef d equipe Mark Laskin of Langley, BC, echoed Foster s sentiments, saying, It sure was tough sledding out there today. It s not often that we don t get a useable score from Eric so, in light of that, our result was certainly unexpected and impressive. From Kara s single rail in the first round to Amy s stellar clear in the second round, and of course Tiffany s double clear, I m extremely proud of how our girls rallied and kept us in the game until the very end, concluded Laskin. 5
