We had a fairly mild winter so far and spring is fast approaching. We are all looking forward to another exciting year filled with clinics and horse shows. Although it is only February, the KLDA Board of Directors has been busy organizing our show schedule and future clinics for the year. The Bronze show dates, and the TENTATIVE Gold show dates are listed on page 8. Keep an eye out for future clinic dates on the website, newsletters and Facebook. We held our 2011 AGM on November 4 th 2011, at a new venue The Junction, in Peterborough. It was a very nice location and the food was delicious! There was a good turn-out, and everyone enjoyed themselves. It s always nice to see people dressed up and out of their show clothes! The meeting minutes and pictures from the Awards Ceremony are on pages 3 to 7 Don t forget your KLDA Membership is due. The KLDA Membership form for 2012 is attached at the end of this newsletter. There won t be any increase in KLDA Membership fees this year. Please fill out the form and send back to our new Membership Secretary Lynne Milford at your earliest convenience. REMINDER - all KLDA members in good standing may place a classified ad in the newsletter up to a 25 word maximum at no charge. Their help and hard work has been invaluable in making KLDA a great success. We wish them all the best and hope to see them at future KLDA shows and clinics. Thanks ladies! KLDA would like to welcome Melanie Thomson onto the Board of Directors for Melanie will be helping Heather with organizing clinics. Attention all volunteers & students! KLDA is always on the lookout for volunteers to help at the 2012 Gold and Bronze shows. Students can earn their community hours if they volunteer with the KLDA. This page will be kept current with all KLDA upcoming events. IN THE NEWS KLDA is green! In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, KLDA is doing its part by reducing paper waste. As we did in 2011, this newsletter and all future newsletters will be available in PDF format on the KLDA website, at In addition, a copy with be ed to all of those who provided an address with their membership forms. Not only does a paperless newsletter help the environment, it also helps keep KLDA membership costs down.. 3 KAWARTHA LAKES DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION Report from the 2011 Annual General Meeting and Awards Banquet Friday November 4 th, 2011 at Peterborough, Ontario Meeting Minutes: Board Members Present: Lynne Milford, Lisa Hossack-Scott, Heather Forsyth-Downs, Karen Thomson, Jennifer Plumbtree, Miranda Trudeau and Brenda Koenig. Welcome: Lynne introduced herself as the president and opened the AGM with welcoming the members of KLDA and thanking them for a great year in It was also announced that there would be a spot open on the board and a form was handed out to those wishing to be nominated. Clinics: Heather gave a report about the three clinics we had. The clinicians for 2011 were Lee Tubman, Simone Williams and Annaliese Farber. Heather discussed the positive feed back we had from the riders and auditors about the clinics. Shows: Lisa gave a report about the six bronze shows and the two gold shows KLDA had in The gold shows were successful with the help from board members and volunteers. Membership: Brenda gave a full membership report. She reported that the membership was down from 2010, with a total of 10 Junior members and 50 senior members. Newsletter: Jennifer discussed the newsletter. She also discussed KLDA s efforts to go green and have online newsletters only. Jennifer stated as a reminder an initial paper newsletter would be mailed out to members at the start of each year. Financial report: The financial report was given by Lisa. Copies of the financial report are also available to any members wishing a copy.

8 Horse Show Information All persons wishing to compete at the Bronze level of competition in 2012, must purchase a Sport License from EC. A Sport License at the Bronze level costs $20.00 per year. The Sport License is to be purchased through EC. In addition to the Sport License fee, there are 2 additional fees that apply to the Bronze level of competition an EC drug testing fee and a Dressage Canada (DC) Levy. The EC drug testing fee is $3.50 per entry per show. The DC levy is $7.00 per entry per show. These fees are due with the entry forms submitted at each horse show you enter in We recommend that you visit both the Equine Canada website at and Dressage Canada website for further information and details. 9 Olympian Ashley Holzer Victorious for Canada at CDI-W West Palm Beach Gold Coast Opener January 26, 2012 Toronto native and three-time Canadian Olympian Ashley Holzer, who currently resides in New York, NY, won both the Grand Prix for Freestyle and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CDI-W Gold Coast Opener, held January 18 22, in West Palm Beach, FL, USA. Riding Breaking Dawn, a flashy bay 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding sired by Akribori and co-owned by Holzer and P.J. Rizvi, Holzer won the Grand Prix for Freestyle test with a score of %. The duo then performed a spectacular Grand Prix Freestyle to earn % for the double victory. Holzer s Freestyle score was more than 4% higher than her nearest competitor. British Columbia native Shannon Dueck of Loxahatchee, FL, earned a fourth place finish in the Grand Prix for Freestyle scoring % with Ayscha (Welt Hit II x Rouletto), her 11-year-old Oldenburg mare. In the Freestyle itself, the pair received % for another fourth place. Olympian Evi Strasser of Sainte Adele, QC, rode Action Tyme, her 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding, to fifth in both the Grand Prix for Freestyle (64.702%) and the Grand Prix Freestyle (66.850%). Jacqueline Brooks of Cedar Valley, ON rode her 2008 Olympic partner Gran Gesto, the 17-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Brinc Ltd and Anne Welch, to seventh place in the Freestyle scoring %. In the Grand Prix for Special, Diane Creech of Caistor Centre, ON, and Devon L (De Niro x Wolkenstein II), Douglas Leatherdale s 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, earned a score of % for third place. Riding her horse Travolta, a 12-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding sired by Olympic Ferro, Joni Lynn Peters of Armstrong, BC, scored % for fourth place. Brooks rode D Niro, Brookhaven Dressage Inc s 12-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding sired by D-Day, to second place in the Grand Prix Special with a score of %. Peters and Travolta were third with %, while Creech and Devon L finished in sixth riding Devon L. Creech also rode Hallmark, Douglas Leatherdale s eight-year-old Hanoverian gelding sired by His Highness, to a second place finish in the Intermediaire I class (65.737%) and third place in the Prix St Georges class (64.974%). In the FEI Junior competition, Tanya Strasser-Shostak, of Sainte Adele, QC, rode Ruby Tyme,
10 Karen Soupcoff s 11-year-old Oldenberg mare sired by Rohdiamant, to first place in the Individual test with %. The pair also won the Junior Rider Freestyle with a score of %. The international judging panel for the CDI-W Gold Coast Opener included Canada s Cara Whitham (FEI 5*) and was also comprised of Joanne Graham (FEI 4* GBR), Bo Jena (FEI 4* SWE), Natalie Lamping (FEI 4* USA), Hans Christian Matthiesen (FEI 4* DEN) Lois Yukins (FEI 4* USA) and Jeanne McDonald (FEI 4* USA). The Gold Coast Opener is the first CDI of the winter season, and is well attended by Canadian riders. This weekend s World Dressage Masters, also held in West Palm Beach, will feature two members of the 2008 Canadian Olympic dressage team Ashley Holzer with Pop Art and Jacqueline Brooks with Gran Gesto along with Victoria Winter and Proton.
