1 2016 Committee President: Lisa Hayes Secretary: Peta Conwell Treasurer: Nicolle Jolly Vice-President: Madeline Horne Clem Kelly Janet Hanslo Gail McCane Alison Burke NAGS News Northcoast Active Riders Group Inc. April 2016 Welcome to the latest edition of the NAGS News is flying by and NAGs is close to its fourth meet for the year. The AGM at the end of 2015 saw a dramatic change in positions on the NAGS committee due to a number of long serving volunteers deciding to give themselves a well-earned break from running the club. Dorry Hofman, Tina Ridley, Sue Barnett and Susan Wettenhall served NAGS with enthusiasm and great commitment and we extend our thanks to them. This year s executive committee of Lisa Hayes, Peta Conwell, Nicolle Jolly and Madeline Horne has hit the ground running. It is at times of change like this that we see the true nature of so many of the great club members who have stepped up to help out. It s important to remember that the people who undertake roles in the club do so voluntarily and squeezed into their spare time. Please remember as you nominate to enter our events that every pair of hands can help in some way to lessen the load of those who do most of the heavy lifting. Countdown to Rio 2016! The Olympic games are being held from 5-21 August in Rio with the equestrian events hosted at the Deodoro site (there are four sites for Olympic events). The dressage Team Preliminary competition is scheduled for 10 & 11 August with the Team Final on 12 August and the Individual Final on 15 August. Rio s timezone is 11 hours behind ours, so be prepared for some late nights in front of the TV! In addition to watching some great riding during the Olympics, you can lend a hand to aspiring Australian team contenders. The Australian Dressage International Travel Fund has been established to help Aussie dressage combinations to meet the cost of qualifying for the team. Brett Parbury, Sue Hearn and Maree Tomkinson have been included in the list of possible team members for To qualify for the team, however, they now have to scoot over to Europe to attend the two qualifying events! Maree Tomkinson estimates the cost to each of them to be around $150,000. You may like to donate to the fund for more info see:
2 This is how the Australian dressage team will be selected: On or before 15 April 2016, the Dressage Selection Panel will announce up to eight horse and athlete combinations (Identified Combinations) to attend two nominated European Grand Prix Classes, from which a ranking list will be compiled. The Dressage Selection Panel will select these Identified Combinations based on a series of factors including participation and performances in previous competition, suitability for expected conditions in Rio and ability and experience at high level international competition. The Dressage Selection Panel will then identify four horse and athlete combinations to the nominated to the AOC by averaging the final scores for each Combination from the Grand Prix class at each of the two Nomination Events, to produce a single score used to rank Combinations from highest to lowest. In the case of a tie for fourth position, the Dressage Selection Panel will identify the horse and athlete combination to be nominated at their sole discretion taking into consideration a series of factors. NAGS has had three great meets already this year we must have broken the rain curse of 2015! Congratulations to all who have participated and a huge thanks to those who make the days happen. The class winners of the Associate Day on 20 March were: Melissa Jones on KAMILAROI BREE Kimberly West on OLEANDER Kerry McDonnell on REPERTOIRE Nicole Bochow on RIVERSIDE KATHAE Nicola Brown on MEMPHIS CLOUD Linda Laing on THE PHOENIX Madeline Horne on NATURAL SPARK Sally Devlin on FAIRBANKS DON RUBEN Stacey Crebbin on ADLOO LOTTO Lisa Hayes on IRISH ROSE 2
3 The class winners (& A/O winners) of the One Star competition on 3 April were: Emma Flavelle-Watts on JEMBRAE RATTLE N HUM Amy Gale on RUBY BRIGHT R (A/O) Carissa Airey on FAITH (A/O) Olivia Vansleve on FLENSBURG CORMINDI (A/O) Nicola Brown on MEMPHIS CLOUD Lindal Birch on FIRST DANCE (A/O) Sarah Hancock on DIXIELAND ROCK (A/O) Emma Flavelle-Watts on DON VINCENZO Madeline Horne on NATURAL SPARK (A/O) Jessica Shaw on ARNAGE WASABI Lisa Hayes on IRISH ROSE (A/O) Stacey Crebbin on ADLOO LOTTO Julie Bland on JORDAN (A/O) Claire Wallace on LINCOLN LORD ASTOR In preparation for our next day (an Associate day on 22 May) here are a few house-keeping issues: STABLES & YARDS HORSE HEALTH DECLARATION If you use a stable &/or yard it MUST be left clean when you vacate it. Please use the stable/yard you are allocated. If you think someone has incorrectly put their horse in a space allocated to you, please see a steward at gear check DO NOT move someone else s horse or equipment! Only use a stable or yard if you paid for it (as part of your competition registration on Nominate ). To compete in any NAGS competition, you MUST tender a Horse Health Declaration BEFORE you ride. If you do not, you will be eliminated and not allowed to compete. We understand that this seems harsh, however, given the current regulatory and proposed regulatory environment regarding bio-safety, NAGS believes this is the best way to ensure good bio-safety practices during an event. 3
4 NOVICE CLUB TEAM CHALLENGE Given last year s successful competition, the Brisbane CDI will include the Saddleworld Novice Club Team Challenge again in The competition will be held July. The NAGS committee is finalising details for entries so stay tuned to the website and Facebook. Warm Up Area Etiquette (a re-print to refresh everyone s memory) At NAGS we are fortunate to have a fair bit of space for competition arenas and warming up. However we have probably all witnessed or experienced near collision situations in the warm up area. Here is some warm-up arena etiquette for your information: riders should pass left shoulder to left shoulder when on the track when not on the outside track, e.g. on a diagonal line, riders should give way to horses on their left the more progressive gait has priority on the track o walk should not be on the track and does not have right of way o trot has priority over walk o canter has priority over trot o lateral work has priority over all paces halt should not be on the track when circling, anticipate your return to the track so as to not stop the flow of other riders Are you an adult amateur owner?? In our last competition there was some confusion on the part of competitors as to whether they were classified as an amateur owner. In short, you must: be 21 years old or more; not receive sponsorship above $500/year; and not have a principle source of income from equestrian work. Once you are confident that you meet the criteria for the classification you must indicate so on your nominate entry. Linda, on the Phoenix, is an Amateur Owner. In this pair, it s not just the rider who is over 21! NAGS clinic Would you be interested in attending a clinic with either group or individual lessons with Lea Bierman on a Thursday? If so, please Lisa on lisahayes@westnet.com.au Clem Kelly dug up this golden oldy: a thank you note that used to go to judges after a competition. 4
