4 Equine Canada Announces Nominations for the 2012 London Olympic Games June 20, 2012 Equine Canada is pleased to announce the names of the rider/horse combinations who will be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) for review and naming to the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team for the sports of Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. The riders and horses nominated have successfully completed the team selection process of their respective High Performance Committees. Nominated team entries will be submitted to the COC no later than July 4. The COC will officially name the Canadian Olympic Team for the sport of Dressage, Eventing and Jumping on July 5 during a news conference at Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta. The rider/horse combinations to be nominated are as follows (listed in alphabetical order): Dressage: Jacqueline Brooks & D Niro Ashley Holzer & Breaking Dawn David Marcus & Chevri s Capital Cedar Valley, ON Toronto, ON Campbellville, ON If for any reason one of the selected horse/rider combinations is unable to compete in the Olympic Games, the following Team Alternate Nominees may be named as a substitute to the Dressage Team: Team Alternates: Diane Creech & Devon L Castor Centre, ON Pia Fortmuller & Orion DeWinton, AB Article courtesy of Equine Canada
5 Jacqueline Brooks heads to 2012 Olympics Mount Albert athlete's horse, D-Niro, competing at first Games As a schoolgirl, Mount Albert s Jacqueline Brooks undertook a year-long project suggesting an early passion for the Olympics Games. It was about what I love about the Olympics, although my parents referred to it as everything you didn t want to know about the Olympics, recalled Brooks, 44. These days, she is experiencing what it is like to be part of the action, perhaps to one day be part of another young student s project. Brooks was confirmed Wednesday as a member of the Canadian dressage team that will compete at the 2012 Games in London starting July 27. Dressage is Aug. 2 to 8. Perhaps the school project was an inkling of things to come for Brooks, who competed in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 aboard Gran Gesto, helping Canada to a ninth-place showing in the team competition. The tandem also notched a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games. This time, Brooks will be aboard D- Niro after the tandem clinched team berths by winning the grand prix and grand prix special events at the final qualifying event in Blainville, Que. earlier this month. To go to two consecutive Games on two different horses, I m pretty proud of that, Brooks said. D-Niro wasn t ready and I had to bring him along. The speed is that much quicker and the skills are much more difficult. It s like the difference between the minor and major leagues in any other sport. Brooks, who rides out of the family-owned Brookhaven Farm in Cedar Valley, departs for England Sunday for a pre-olympic competition and Canadian team training camp. D-Niro leaves tomorrow. The tandem has been together for only 15 months. D-Niro was purchased from a friend in Florida who suggested the now 13-year-old Swedish warmblood gelding might be a good fit for Brooks. He just said he had a horse that would suit me, she said. I tried him. There was just something about him that convinced me I could take the risk. It s been a whirlwind. He was at a Pan Am level, but not an Olympic level and had to learn at that level. Horses are very intuitive. At competitions, they are so very aware of the change in their routine and that they are on display for six minutes. That will be the challenge. The venue will be electric and the crowds large because England is so supportive of its equestrian sports, but I really trust this horse. Because equestrian events were staged in Hong Kong in 2008, Brooks missed out on the chance to participate in the opening ceremonies in Beijing. This time, equestrian competition is slated for London s Greenwich Park and in close proximity to many venues. She looks forward to marching into the Olympic stadium with her Canadian teammates.
6 In 2008, our events were done in time for closing ceremonies, she said. It was amazing. The energy in the building was crazy. I think I m anticipating the same thing and the energy. Brooks is a late-comer to the sport. She took up dressage riding after graduating from the University of Western Ontario. She served as a groom for Canadian Olympic teammate Ashley Holzer at the 1999 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. She is counting on her 2008 Olympic experience to be a positive factor this time. It was a life-long goal to get to the Olympics, so the excitement was greater than the results, Brooks said, recalling Beijing. I had one of my best rides, but not nearly as competitive as four years later. If we all have a great day, we can probably get the best results for Canada. Canada s only medal in the European-dominated sport of dressage is a bronze in the 1988 Games in South Korea.
