Alberta Show Sponsorship CC/ADA continued their support for Gold Level Shows in Alberta with a $500 sponsorship to the Dressage Festival Regional Championships hosted by PA/ADA in Red Deer on Sept.

2 Alberta Show Sponsorship CC/ADA continued their support for Gold Level Shows in Alberta with a $500 sponsorship to the Dressage Festival Regional Championships hosted by PA/ADA in Red Deer on Sept.21-22nd. CA/ADA sent a very nice package of thank you items to CC/ADA for their generous sponsorships for their 2013 Gold shows. Photos of the CC/ADA champions will be posted at Edgewood Stable and Vibholm Equestrian Center. Ride-a-Test Day Thank you to Mary, Karen, and volunteers (Lois, Melanie, Val, Nancy Purkis, Lynn, and anyone I missed) for helping with the Ride-a-Test Day on Sept.28th. Everyone rode their first test, and then was coached by Doreen Horsey on how to improve their marks. Thank you to Edgewood Stables for hosting this event. Thank you to the riders who participated. News from General Meeting August 2013 Plans for 2014 Gold Show: The show will be extended in length so will start Friday afternoon, June13, until Sunday noon, June 15. This will allow prescheduling of classes so that riders can enter classes based on the day of their class. This is the common standard for other shows in Alberta so should benefit the riders and coaches. Our 2014 show committee will remain the same: Deb Roslinsky, show manager; Mary McLean, show secretary; and show coordinators, Siv Prins and Dru Pearson. Thank you so much to our fabulous foursome for volunteering to manage our 2014 Gold Show. Trick or Treat! Purchases Casino funds have been used to purchase a new printer for the show office. A new cassette/cd player has been purchased for use at the Gold Show freestyles. The show committee also purchased cushions, blankets, and a clock for use at the shows. It pays to check and read your e- mails regularly. One of our club members was diligent in her attention to s and has benefited from taking the old club printer, and putting it to good use. There was a close 2nd place! Thank you. Dressage Fence Use A motion was made to allow the use of the dressage fence and trailer equipment by only adult members of CC/ADA. This allows other groups to borrow the trailer and equipment, but an adult CC/ADA members must supervise its use. AGM and Winter Party Our annual AGM and Winter Party will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Rainbow Riding Centre near Lethbridge. Details will be circulated after Christmas. Renting the facility is $145 for the day. The CC/ADA directors passed a motion to add a $55 donation to LHRA. Education Subsidy Do not forget to submit your Educational Subsidy application by November 30, The forms are on the ADA website under Chinook Forms. Welcome to new owners at Grand Peaks Equestrian Centre Chinook Country/ADA would like to welcome Vibholm Equestrian Center to Canada, Alberta,

3 and specifically to the Lethbridge area. The Vibholm s have purchased Grand Peaks Equestrian Centre and are currently transforming the stable into a home for their four horses, three dogs, and current boarders. The owner/managers of VEC are Caroline Vibholm, her dad (Niels Vibholm), and her mom (Bente Vibholm). The major focus of Vibholm Equestrian Center will be dressage however there continues to be a mix of riders and the Wildrose Pony Club Program. Caroline brought her four horses with her (two under saddle and two young prospects) Santorini Hit, Barolov V., Barbaresco V., and Rock Idol. The Vibholm s lived in the Taber area where Caroline was born, but have resided in Denmark since They have wanted to move back to Canada since the mid-90 s. In May 2013, they sold their farm in Denmark and within four months found their new home in Lethbridge. Website -- So, welcome home. ADA Go to for the latest ADA news Setting goals is forefront in my world right now with the NCCP courses that I facilitate this fall; setting dates for 2014 courses; goal setting for my students for the fall/winter; and of course, planning for my own riding. Whether you ride to exercise and/or train your horse, or ride to let your horse exercise you, setting short and longterm goals is certainly beneficial to our mind and body. Goal setting is also beneficial to your horse if he/she is wandering around the arena or standing in the pen wondering (if a horse really wonders!!) what your plan is. In your thoughts about the upcoming fall/winter, consider other horse related activities. The AEF website has several workshops for coaches but many are beneficial to riders. The Alberta horse industry branch has posted their conference for January 10-12th in Red Deer. ADA s website has a list of clinics with invited clinicians. The Equine Canada convention is in Winnipeg February 5-9th. There are many on-line courses eg. USDF, Guelph. Try some cross training with yoga, pilates, or deep water jog to mention only a few. If you have some thoughts about possible workshops or clinics that CC/ADA could sponsor, please let our Educational Directors and/or myself know. You might also be tweaked by the current interest in Western Dressage!! Training Thoughts I will be including a new section in the Newsletter titled Training Thoughts If you have any articles you would like to share please send them to me and I ll share them with others. Enjoy! President s Report Do hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer/fall with their horses. It is probably a down time for many horses and riders. But it is also a time when you might be planning your next season of training. Whether you are a competitive rider or recreational rider, I am sure that you have been thinking about long term goals for the next few months. Try to engage your horse a little more; ride will through the corner with the inside leg firmly on the horse and the outside rein giving support and balance. After the corner the horse should be straightened and a half halt should proceed the first extended stride. Once the horse executes the extention you must move your hands a little forward to permit the neck to stretch and to give more freedom of the shoulder. Keep the rhythm in your hands. Watch that your horse does not fall on the forehand or start running. Give a half halt when crossing the center line to avoid these problems. Rolf A. Vlatten M.D. Our sincere thought to Cheryl Arelis who had to euthanize Reilly as a result of deteriorating health issues due to kidney failure. But on a happy note, she has retired Kona to pasture home. A well deserved retirement after a life of shows and lessons. Edgewood stables welcomed Mary McLean s young horse in October. She is proceeding with having Tilly backed and having her ground work polished up. Condolences to Karen Sander on saying goodbye to her very elderly horse, Motor. Decisions like that are never easy.
