1 2018 STATE BREED EXHIBITION JUDGE - MELANIE GROTH Overview Long Stock coats In general the quality was very good. Most were very well coloured with very good pigment, masking and saddle colour. They had good proportions with very good strength of bone. In a number of exhibits I noted that the plane of the skull and foreface should be more parallel and the ear set a little low on the skull. In general the necks were of good length, however in some cases they were on the erect side of correct. The withers were normal and the backlines good, however in a number of exhibits the middle of the back was higher than the wither, with a distinct bend in the lumbar spine. This in turn effects the lay of the croup making them steep. The length in general were slightly short to short. The winning open animals had good length of croup, however the tail set detracted slightly. The forehand angulation in general was good to very good. Slightly short upper arms affected the reach of a number of animals. The hindquarters in general were deeply angled and this coupled with instability of the hock joints. Many of the long stock exhibits do not stand correct in front. The movement in general was very good and powerful, however some dogs due to the depth of the hindquarter tend to show a weakness in the rear pastern where it comes into contact with ground almost the full length of the hock. This inhibits the completion of the drive as the forehand has to compensate and the dog either high steps or falls on the forehand. The angle of the hindquarter should be studied by breeders to see the true effect on the drive as it effects the balance in movement and whilst it looks impressive it is not correct anatomically for an animal that is bred to endure. In many animals I noted the tail length and varying degrees of carriage. This detracts from the overall impression and is something we should be aware of in our breeding programs. The Sieger and Siegerin were both impressive animals of high anatomical worth, however they both carry the backline and deep hindquarter issue and it is important that in using these animals that we take this into account and try and look to use animals that will lesson the exaggeration. Stock Coats Young classes - Puppies In general the young classes were of a pleasing standard, noting that some of the minor and puppies were large for their age. The bone strength was in most cases medium strong to strong. I did not observe any bone strength that was concerning. The puppy bitch winner a daughter of X-Rated was outstanding, Lovely type, expressive with a lot of scope. Very good angulations and movement. Shows a lot of promise. The minor classes had good numbers and were of quite pleasing quality. Some were still to develop their sequence of steps and this was noticeable due to the depth of hind angulation in some of the exhibits. It s always a difficult decision weighing up the attributes of the puppies knowing that deep hindquarter angulation is an issue for the German Shepherd Dog worldwide, however if they are able to control their hindquarter and move with a good topline I was inclined to not penalize to heavily in the young classes. The fault has to be taken in consideration with the overall picture and construction. A short upper arm and underchest and narrowness through is equally as bad. It is yet to be seen as to how these youngsters develop with their angulation and age was taken into consideration in weighing this up. The influence of Conbhairean Freddie was evident in the young classes.

2 Adult Classes Junior The Junior classes were a little disappointing. No one animal stood out and it could have been judged differently on another day. It came down to performance and movement and those animals that had the best ground cover without falling on the forehand were at the front of the line. Intermediate Both the dog and bitch winners were of very high quality and really good representatives of the breed. Both a little elongated with noble expression, very good heads and lovely over and underlines. Scopey movers with excellent ground cover and maintenance of the wither at both slow and fast speeds. Great to see the State Sieger Rafael represented here with the bitch winner. The intermediate dog carries the influential sire Gerry Schacher with an excellent mother in Pedra degli Achei. Open The males were small in number of excellent quality. Totally convincing in this class was Schaeferhund Rafael, whose progeny at the show cemented his worth as a valued sire in Western Australia. He had many class winners and excellent gradings in the open classes. Unfortunately, the ear carriage on Rafael is marred by the haemotoma in his ear, however given that this is a Breed Exhibition it did not factor in the outcome and for me he is a very worthy State Sieger. It is clear he brings very good strength and substance to his progeny and they are typey, to him so the predictability of using him is evident for breeders. It would appear he produces very good top and underlines and does not bring excessively deep hindquarter angulation. The Reserve State Sieger X- Rated is a young dog and it is still early days however his performance in the ring, his bloodlines both mother and father and some promising youngsters convinced me to elevate him to the Excellent Merit grading. It is to be hoped that breeders in Western Australia make use of this lovely young male and consolidate the very good type he brings. The bitches Twelve presented, three Excellent Merit with the remainder obtaining the excellent grading. The female in 12 th place in the class was of the working-line style and many may consider her construction may have precluded her from the excellent grading, however my observation of her in the class was that she was dry and firm, had a very good sequence of steps, carried the witherline well throughout the extended gaiting and I considered that she was a better mover than the two bitches in front of her. Their construction was of excellent quality and I chose to leave them in front of her for that reason. She is of German Shepherd type bred in the style of the working lines, put to a male with a very good angulations and strength of bone she should produce puppies that are dry and firm with better angulations than herself, therefore I chose to give her the excellent grading. The winner of the class was convincing and not challenged for the State Siegerin title. A daughter of Raphael she stands in his type with excellent bone strength, colour and substance. She is dry and firm not exaggerated in any way and a powerful mover. I look forward to seeing her progeny in the future. Ciao Bella an older female with very good progeny placed second and Excellent Merit impressed with her outstanding, dynamic movement; a medium strong, well-constructed female who simply out-performed the younger animals in the class. She produced the lovely Intermediate LSC winner from Xaro. Excellent Merit 3 Volscaro Hypnotic Poison had an excellent graded littermate in the Open dog class. Hypnotic Poison is still a young female from the very good producing Hornemarks Ricco. She performed extremely well in the class and in both the on and off lead gaiting was outstanding. The fourth female Excellent 1 another Hornemarks Ricco daughter, I liked very much. Her type is lovely. She was presented in quite heavy condition and this marred her performance in both the on and off lead gaiting where she fell on the forehand and the ligamentation was not tight enough. This was the limiting factor in the grading. The remainder of the class had various restrictions in the length and lay of the upper arm and the length of the lower chest. A number

3 of animals fell a little on the forehand and restrictions in the forereach limited them from going further forward in the class. Well constructed baby of good type. Expressive, well coloured. Good angulations. Presents a nice picture standing naturally with good quality. Shows good ground coverage, very light on her feet. Displays good movement, maintaining a good topline, the hocks are very close. Shows good movement, but falls on the forehand. Exhibits a lot of power from the rear, but needs to develop the sequence of steps for balance. Very good forequarter angulation and very deep hindquarter angulation. Very good length of foreleg. The pasterns should be a little firmer. Stepping cow hocked at rear, a little wide at front, the hocks joints are a little loose. Good head and expression. Strong upper and lower jaws. Strong neck, level wither, firm back, slightly steep croup. The wave in the hair on the back detracts from the topline. Very good fore, slightly deep hindquarter. Pasterns should be firmer. The feet are a little flat. Good firmness of hocks for his age, not quite correct in front. Shows good movement but should carry the wither a little higher. In movement displays a very good stride whilst maintaining a very good wither line.

In movement, she displays good drive and reach, should hold the wither a little higher. The ears should be firmer in movement. Good fore and underchest. Good length of foreleg. Stepping a little narrow at rear, not quite correct at front. The hock joints should be a little firmer. The ears should be firmer in movement. During movement she displays good drive and very good reach maintaining a good wither. Very good masking. Ideally the neck should be a little longer. High wither, firm back, well moulded just slightly short croup. The upper arm should be just a little longer but is well angled. Very good hindquarter angulation. Good fore and very good underchest. The elbows are a little open. Steps a little narrow at rear, correct at front. The hock joints should be a little firmer. Displays very good hindquarter drive and good fore reach however should carry the head a little higher. For further balance she needs to develop her sequence of steps.

The eye should be a fraction darker. Expressive. The ears are large but well set. The neck is set just slightly erect. High wither, firm back, slightly short, slightly steep croup. The shoulder blade is set slightly steep. Slightly deep hindquarter angulation. Very good fore and good underchest. Standing not quite correct in front. Stepping correct at rear. In movement she displays very good drive with just a slight restriction in the reach and a tendency to high step. 2 nd 32 ADASHAD LOVE CHILD A/Z DOB: 31/12/16 S:*Schaeferhund Rafael Ex.M Br: EXH D:*Friedental Miles and Miles Exh: S&M Adams 16 months. 59 cms. 27 cms. The pasterns should be a little firmer. Steps a little narrow at rear and toes in slightly at front.
