1 No. 53, September 2009 Monthly Bulletin FREAAE The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation FULL DIARY OF EVENTS FOR AUTUMN Over the next few months, the Royal School will be branching out with performances both in and outside Spain. Those held in Spain will include the prestigious show How the Andalusian Horses Dance, which will be part of many of the most notable events happening nationwide this Autumn. The Royal School will also be resuming its training courses, to commence on 1 September. 2 NEWS The Royal School in Madrid Throughout September, it will be possible to attend the show How the Andalusian Horses Dance in various places in Spain. At the beginning of the month (as we anticipated in August s bulletin), the Royal School will be performing in the following towns and cities across the province of Madrid as part of its promotional tour, and in its capacity as ambassador for Andalusia. 2nd at the Bullring in El Álamo at pm. 3rd at the Bullring in Valdemoro at 10 pm. 4th at the Plaza Mayor in Chinchón at 10 pm. 5th at the Bullring in Alcalá de Henares at 10pm. 6th at the Bullring in Móstoles at 10pm. Ticket are available from the El Corte Inglés department store, by calling and at the usual ticket offices. Tour poster The Foundation at Equus Catalonia From the 17 to 20 September, the Royal School will be in Barcelona to participate at the 21st International Horse and Pony Fair Equus Catalonia. The Fair is expecting to receive around 400 horses from breeding farms and equestrian clubs across Spain and many other countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland and Great Britain. There will also be 150 commercial stands. It will also be hosting the Morphology Competition of P.R.E. horses (Pure Spanish Thoroughbred) for the Spanish Championship final. The event will be held at the Recinto Ferial de Montjuic (Montjuic trade fair venue), and will also include daily displays at the different tracks. The Royal School is presenting its show each night, which will take place at 9pm on the 17th, 18th and 19th, and at 8pm on Sunday 20th. For more information, please go to: 2

3 NEWS It s back to Equus Girona October sees the Royal School continuing its tour through Spain with the show How the Andalusian Horses Dance, this time in Girona. The Fira de Girona venue is hosting the Equus Horse Fair from 9 to 12 October. This event will include more sporting disciplines, more training exercises and horse-breeding tests. The Royal School is returning to Equus Girona after a three-year absence and will perform on the 9, 10 and 11 October at 10pm. Official Equus Girona Poster Morocco Tour On 23, 24 and 25 October, the tour will leave Spain and take our riders and horses to El Jadida in Morocco, a coastal city in the north west of the country. This is the first time that the city will be hosting the show How the Andalusian Horses Dance, which will be held in the evenings. 3

4 Training Courses to Start TRAINING Training offered by the Royal School in different equestrian specialities will begin in early September. The School expects to welcome pupils from Years 2, 3 and 4. New pupils will be starting in early October once they have sat the entrance exams, and the different exercises have been assessed. The application deadline for attending the training courses is 11 September Applications and proof of eligibility will be accepted until this date only. Entrance exams are planned for 23 September For more information, please go to: Equestrian Modernisation Courses As per every year as part of its training program, the Royal School is organising courses in Equestrian Modernisation, which aims to broaden students knowledge of Doma Clasica. The courses take place over three fortnightly cycles. This year s planned dates are the following: 18 to 29 January to 12 February to 26 February 2010 The training program combines practical and theory classes on lungeing; introduction to the Spanish horse; Doma Vaquera; works in hand; pirouettes; the high competition rider; seats, airs and transitions; applied hypology; physiotherapy; works on two tracks; change of leg; carriage driving; and 'piaffé and 'passage'; with instruction by the most renowned riders. 4

5 DOMA AT THE FREAAE Dressage at the Royal School This month we are launching a section in which one of our riders, Rafael Soto, will help readers understand the process of dressage at the Royal School. CREATION OF THE ROYAL SCHOOL The origins of the School are down to certain individuals who had a dream: to create and promote a classic and academic school with Thoroughbred Spanish horses. In early 1970s Spain, particularly in Andalusia, there were excellent virtuoso riders of the so-called ALTA ESCUELA (High School). There were also expert riders in the countryside (Doma Vaquera) as a result of our region s ranching and livestock farming tradition. Yet there was none of the discipline and rigour of a school that would teach and promote classic horse riding; the methodology, the different shapes of the picadero, the transition work or gymnastic work that each horse needed. Nor was there the calm, the impulsion, the gentleness - a myriad of things found only in Doma Clasica. There were many riders, but the majority were not familiar with this method: it was like knowing how to play the guitar well, but without any background in musical theory or having attended a Conservatory. Two men wished to change all this: Álvaro Domecq Romero and his father, who were acquainted with Doma Clasica thanks to their friends and contacts in Europe, particularly at the prestigious SPA- NISH RIDING SCHOOL OF VIENNA. Thanks to these friendships and the founding riders, Álvaro Domecq Romero studied an intensive course in Vienna in 1972, after which the show "HOW THE ANDALUSIAN HORSES DANCE" was performed for the first time in front of the then prince and princess of Spain, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía. Don Álvaro was awarded the Golden Horse trophy. Don Juan Carlos has supported the school ever since, granting it the title of ROYAL SCHOOL in I shall finish with a quotation from the book Horse-riding. This memorable phrase was, and continues to be, the principle have adopted from the Vienna School. It was written by Colonel Alois Podasky and summarises one of the principles upon which the School was based. "THEORY IS KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICE IS SKILL; BUT UNDERSTAN- DING MUST PRECEDE ACTION". 5

6 EVENTS & VISITS Events and Visits at the Royal School EVENTS The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art Foundation will be performing the show How the Andalusian Horses Dance at 12 pm on the following dates: 19 September: Gala Fiestas de la Vendimia (Grape Juice Festival) 10 October: Gala de San Dionisio (St Dionysus Festival) 14 November: Gala de otoño (Autumn Festival) 5 December: Gala del Día de la Constitución (Day of the Constitution Festival) The show will also be taking place on Thursday 24 September, the Día de la Merced (Patron Saint s day). 7 Equestrian Vocabulary VOCABULARY RECOMMENDATIONS Permeability/Throughness: using pressure on the reigns to influence resistance through the base of the neck, neck and back on the legs on one side, making them obey. Weigh-in: section of the hippodrome where jockeys are weighed before and after the race to ensure that they maintain an appropriate weight throughout the competition. Breast-strap: strap that goes over the horse's chest, tied around the girth at two points. // It is intended to fix the saddle to the torso. Piaffé: High School dressage movement. Practically walking on the spot, with no forward impulses. Highly collected and cadenced trot, but with which the horse does not move forward.
