Her paintings have appeared on the cover of a number of magazines and hang among some fine collections. The humorous one on this cover has been used on Christmas cards and is very well known. 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT FAHR has just had another birthday and is now six years old. I don t know about you, but I have no idea where that six years went. Congratulations to Irene Smith and HMH Phantom Spirit on claiming FAHR 500. This colt is exactly what FAHR is about. The concentration of his Sundance blood was the highest of any of the Sundance bred Appaloosas applying for the 500 number. Please refer to the registrar s column for the contenders and their percentages of Sundance blood. While I m at it, I would like to give Arita a big hand for completing this very difficult task. Let us all consider the amount of work it takes to just perform the duties of the registry job, let alone finding the necessary time to get it done and do the extra research needed at various times. So, please, try to keep all this in mind before finding fault with her work or anyone else involved in the day to day operations of FAHR. I know most of you are very appreciative of these fine folks who give of their personal time, and I thank you very much for that. Max Sterrett has completed the Stallion Directory and you should have either received it by now or it has been included with this issue of the Tidings. He has done a great job on it. I hope that those who did not get involved with this year s directory will see what a great promotional opportunity it is and consider getting involved with next year s directory. Now is the time to start planning for the next one! With this issue of the Tidings you will notice a big change. FAHR has recently invested in a color printer which will be used to publish the Tidings, Stallion Directory, FAHR s first Stud Book, and some other future projects that are planned. It will enable us to publish a better product and save on outside printing costs. Again, Max Sterrett will be doing the printing of these projects. It is a huge undertaking and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to him for giving of his personal time. As we, at FAHR, enter this holiday season, our hearts are with those families who have loved ones in Iraq. Let us not forget while we are celebrating, some 130,000 fathers, mothers, sons and daughters are spread around that country trying their hardest to just get out in one piece. We wish them the best and hope that they all stay safe so they can return home as soon as possible. FROM THE SECRETARY I know when I first joined FAHR, I didn t understand how membership renewals were handled, and I can see how it might be confusing to new members. Unlike other organizations where everyone renews at the first of the year, FAHR members renew before the end of the month they joined. If you check your membership card, it will tell you what month/date/year your membership expires. So, if your membership card says it expires by 11/30/2003, then you will be expected to renew your membership during the month of November by filling out a renewal form that I will send you in the mail or by . Also, if you see any mistakes in the information on your renewal form, don t hesitate to correct it before you send it in so I can keep my records accurate, or contact me if there is a change in your address, phone number, or address anytime during the year. And although I enjoy eager members who send their renewals early on a membership application, it makes my job so much easier if you could please be patient and wait for the form. It would also help tremendously if all members could renew their memberships promptly. Although I don t mind sending out renewal reminders when it s necessary, it d be nice not having to do it at all. This also saves FAHR time and money that could be spent on other projects to promote our wonderful foundation Appaloosa breed horses, and you take the risk of losing your membership temporarily until you rejoin, which means you could miss a vital copy of the Tidings, or possibly have problems with horse registrations, owner transfers, etc. I don t mean to sound like a crank, but I deal with these problems on a day to day basis that could be corrected with a little thought and consideration on your part. In turn my job effects the efficiency of the registrar, the treasurer, and the home office. So, I ll just say in advance, thank you for your patience and understanding in these matters, and hopefully we can work together to keep FAHR running smoothly. I hope everyone stays warm, this winter, and I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. May God bless each and everyone of you! 4 FROM THE REGISTRAR At this writing, 2003 is racing toward the finish line (2004 hot on it s heels) and Dartagnons Spitfire, FAHR #561 has now been admitted to the FAHR registry. With our first Stud Book in progress, a new up-dated web-site in the making, the pending conversion of our FAHR hard files to disk, our Stallion Breeding Report Drawing, and a record number of applications and transfers to address, this has been a very busy year for FAHR, and for this department. Our quest for, the Sundance ApHC 500 descendent who will represent FAHR # 500, has now concluded. There were a total of 11 horses (one application withdrawn early on) offered for consideration, to represent that illustrious stallion: Sundance, ApHC # 500. Until next time, FROM BREEDER S ADVISORY COMMITTEE CHAIR As the year winds down to an end I d like to give a brief update on a few of the programs created through the Breeders Advisory Committee. The BAC consists of Tom Taylor, FAHR President, Arita Harwood, FAHR Registrar and BOD, Kathy Conklin, whom just recently volunteered her services and myself, Eddie Street, BAC/Chair, and BOD. I d like to extend a special Thank You, to Kathy for volunteering to work on this committee. It s greatly appreciated. The long awaited FAHR 500 number was awarded to stallion HMH Phantom Spirit, owner Irene Smith. Unfortunately, there was a bit of confusion as to how this number was awarded. In previous articles in The Tidings, it was posted that it would be awarded to the horse with the highest concentration of Sundance blood. However some of the translation was lost when it was published in the Sundance Newsletter that the horse whose pedigree ran the greatest number of times to Sundance would be awarded the number 500. This discrepancy caused a few problems for some SunDance and FAHR members. I m delighted to announce that the mare NEEMEEPOO- SCOUGARPAWS, FAHR 423, owner Robin Sothman, is the first recipient of the Mare Of Merit Award. Congratulations Robin! Also, we have received a few candidates for the Foal of the Year Award for the year Foals eligible must be born between August 31, of 2003 to August 31, There are still several FAHR mugs for sale. These mugs will be changed on a yearly basis, and will feature a different Foundation horse represented along with the year it was printed. Lastly, the Silver and leather headstall prize will be drawn on January 15th, Arita Harwood tells me she has received several dozen stallion reports. 6 LETTERS & INPUT from Members & Supporters Dear FAHR Tidings: Received via I read Joy Irwin's article on moonblindness in the July/Aug/Sept 2003 issue with dismay. Joy firmly states that ERU is not an inherited disease in the Appaloosa breed, yet does not give any source for her information. I have interviewed ophthalmologists at the University of Florida (Dennis Brooks, DVM) and the University of North Carolina (Brian C. Gilger, DVM), and neither one of these veterinarians who are currently conducting clinical research on ERU is aware of any research ever conducted regarding a genetic link. Given this fact, I don't see how Joy can state with authority that ERU is not a genetically transmitted disease. ERU is prevalent in Appaloosas for a reason. We don't know yet if it's linked to color or genetics, but it shows up more in our breed than in any other. I lost an Appaloosa mare 7 years ago to this insidious eye disease, and urge Appaloosa breeders to consider the possibility that this condition is handed down genetically. Until researchers can tell us otherwise, we need to be cautious with our breed's health. Good luck finding just what you are looking for!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Tom: I have sold my Appaloosa, Topatchy s Double, to my granddaughter and her husband, Mr. And Mrs. Eddy Timmer. I know he got a good home and I sold my mare, Gypsie and her colt and Gypsie s yearling filly. The colt Gypsie had this year was a beautiful colt black full blanket with big black spots. Lola and Doug Haus bought them. I am 79 years old time to let the horses go. However, I have three minatures; two mares and believe it or not the minature stallion is 34 inches and is red roan, white on rump, big black spots. He has all markings of Appaloosas. He is registered in Minature Registry. I ll have them, few chickens and few sheep to keep me busy. Deer season is on right now. The first day was November 8th and I shot a doe on that first day at noon in back of my place here. Am having sausage and beer sticks made. My son wants to pay for half of processing as he wants some sausage. He don t hunt. His wife, Jessie, said, don t go shoot another deer. Well, the following Thursday in the afternoon I went out to hunt and shot another small doe. I am having chops and steaks made to put in freezer. I used my Case tractor to haul it out of my back pasture to the barn. There is enough meat for me for one year. I have enjoyed my horses. I joined the Appaloosa

7 letters continued Horse Club in That s when I got my first Appaloosas otherwise I was raising some nice Paints. I have broke six stallions for riding; one stallion as I was to climb on his back while my husband was holding him, I didn t get seated in saddle when he bucked and threw me. I landed on my back on a pile of rocks in front of the barn, but got right back on and went for a heck of a ride. I got the best of him and he was the only one who ever threw me. Boy, I was lucky I didn t break my back or bones, but I was sure hurting for a while. Well, will close. I will miss my Appaloosa horses. I am short 4 10 it got so I couldn t throw the saddle on the horse without having to stand on a tub and I had to stand on the tub to put my foot in the stirrup. Reason for me to give up, but I can still haul hay, plow snow with my Case tractor and hunt deer. I am just a little old lady that won t give up. 8 OUTSTANDING APPALOOSA BLOODLINES (Rainbow & Polar Star Line) by ROBERT L. PECKINPAH MR. PECKINPAH WRITES: "The family strains chosen here, however, have commanded the respect of breeders and no one can deny their influential impression on and contribution to, the horses entered on the books as foundation stock nor the untold hundreds of animals still unregistered for one reason or another. Their get have long been noted in their immediate areas for passing along conformation, color, and action coupled with a high degree of stamina and their ability to get a job done in a sensible and tractible manner. They carry blood that 100 years ago was on the trail of the buffalo and awaiting dawn for the attack. It's the blood that swam the Snake under flood stage three times under fire that out foxed, out ran General Howard's several Cavalry Divisions from the Palouse to the heart of the Bear Paw. It is impossible, even now, to take leave from the hard cold genetic fact that in the end, it is blood that counts." In the spring of 1928, Ed McCrea, owner of the 40 ranch near McCord, Saskatchewan, Canada, purchased a bay but snowflaked, rat tailed Appaloosa mare in foal from Fred Courteau of South View, Saskatchewan. Courteau, a rancher for the past 30 years at South View who has raised many excellent spotted horses, had purchased 40 mares near Williston, North Dakota, shipped them across the line to his ranch and this bay with white flecks was among the bunch. In May of the same year, this mare foaled the stallion Rainbow, forerunner of a family strain of Appaloosas which has become quite famous in the northwest and Canada. The Horse Lover Magazine Dec 1950-Jan 1951 Rainbow was used on the 40 ranch as a sire and saddle horse until he was shipped east to Quebec in Rainbow, white with spots from the withers back, weighed 1100 at maturity and stood 15 1/2 hands. His outstanding son, sired before leaving Saskatchewan for Quebec, was Checkers, who is coming 15 years old this June. Checkers, white with black spots over rump, weighs 1125, stands 15.1 and is still being used as a working cow horse on the McCrea ranch summer and winter alike, and in the midst of the latter, it is not uncommon for the thermometer to drop under 46 below and never get above 15 below for months at a time. In 1938, Checkers was bred to a Canadian Pacer, Rose Bud, coming from the best harness stock above the line, and in the April that followed, this mare foaled Checker's outstanding colt to date. This colt, a snowflaked bay at first, shed off as a yearling and was white all over with small black spots starting at the neck, and getting progressively larger when you reach the rump. Thus emerged the popular Canadian stallion, Polar Star No. 176, descendant of the dispersed Nez Perce stock, that ended up in North Dakota. He presently weighs 1125 and stands a even 15 hands. In 1948 McCrea, driving 1400 miles, brought down five horses to the first all Appaloosa show at Lewiston, and walked off with 8 ribbons. Polar Star placed 3rd in the open stallion class and 3rd in sire and get. He sired the first place winner of the yearling filly class; 4th place winner of the yearling stallion class and second place winners in the matched pair class. Speck, a gelding and a full brother, took a 4th place in the gentlemen s pleasure class, 3rd in the stake race and a "photo-finish" second in the 300 yard dash. At the conclusion of the show in 1948, Polar Star was bred to a mare (of the Blue-Toby strain) belonging to 8 Jesse Heffel of Kendrick, Idaho, and she foaled the filly "Twinkle Star" less than a month previous to the 1949 show. Despite her immaturity, Twinkle Star walked off with the blue ribbon in the fillies of the 1949 class. Flicka Star, winner of the yearling filly class in 1948, was again successful and won the two year old filly class. The outstanding stud to date by Polar Star is Flash Star who is coming 3 years old. Flash Star was bred by McCrea but is now owned by Fred Erwin of Viceroy, Saskatchewan. He is colored very similar to Medicine Man, the 1949 open stallion champion. At last report Erwin intended to race him above the line this coming summer. Mr. and Mrs. William Robie of White Bird, Idaho, owns a colt now by Polar Star which was pictured in the July issue of Horse Lover. This little colt, Shining Star, caused no end of comment when shown at Lewiston at the first show. Flicka Star and Teeny Star, both two year olds and presently owned by McCrea, are the outstanding fillies by this stallion. As of January 1st, 1950, 30 horses in the stud book trace to this line. Rainbow and Checkers have done in the past and Polar Star is today doing an influential job for the Appaloosa whether he be above or below the line. 9 In the keenest competition of all, at the Pacific National Exhibition, Mr. Hughes' entries took three top awards-first in the stallion class, champion senior stallion, and grand senior stallion. Domino Speckled Prince was also fourth in performance. The mare was third among brood mares, and Little Beaver (now six weeks old) was the re- serve champion stallion colt up to two years. The Lower Fraser Valley Exhibition at Cloverdale brought Mr. Hughes more acclaim when his trio won two firsts, a second, and a third. Appaloosa News ~ February, 1962 Canadian Appaloosas Gain Recognition Sunrise Little Beaver, owned by Walter Hughes, North Surrey, B. C., was the cover model for the cover photo used in the Brackman-Ker feed company's monthly news letter. The publication is well circulated in the Northwest. Mr. Hughes' other Appaloosas have gained recognition. At Lynden, Washington, his Domino Speckled Prince placed second in the senior class, fourth in performance (first time in this type of competition), and fourth when teamed with another entry for matched pairs. In the North Fraser Valley Exhibition at Haney, Domino Speckled Prince was champion stallion and first in the stallion class. Sheila was champion mare and first in her class, and Little Beaver (at 38 days old) placed top among the colts. SUNRISE LITTLE BEAVER 9

10 Children like to be watched and admired by spectators. What finer way is there to do this than by Children s Costume Classes. Showing horses as a family affair or project is certainly not uncommon at the many Appaloosa Horse Shows. A common occurrence is to observe a dad who thought he owned some fine horses, turn stable hand while the kids take over and show the horses with great skill. To relate all examples of Appaloosa horses being the ideal companion for children is impossible. We have all seen examples of the tiny tots just learning the ways of horsemanship. Typical of these is the old gelding, wise from many years on the trail, stopping in his tracks as his "little" rider courageously tries once again to mount after falling off for the ump-teenth time... the brood mare who patiently waits for her little wranglers to return with her foal, which they have taken off to the neighbors to show them their new pet... the youngster mounted on an old stallion to help his dad with the daily ranch work. We've seen the running Appaloosa, off in a far corner of the fair grounds, being cooled off by his young admirers. And what about the "some day calf roper" who is all tangled in his rope, but thanks to the Kids and Appaloosas... The Perfect Combination By Ed Roberts Many words have been written and much said about the versatility of the Appaloosa. Such qualities as conformation, disposition, cow sense, heart, color and speed have been discussed to great length. Possibly the one use, that is the closest to us all, but the most overlooked, is that of being a suitable mount for our children or grandchildren. That today's showmanship classes represent tomorrow s breeders is a responsibility for all Appaloosa fanciers. Statistics alone will show a majority of the horse population is dominated by our fine youth of today. Let's take a look at these many qualities which will lead the Appaloosa to be the most soughtafter and rewarding mount for youth. The great number of young people that will be mounted on some breed of horse in the coming years represents an area that farsighted breed- ers cannot overlook. Pictures often times tell the best story. Included are illustrations showing the Appaloosa in the role of reliable companion for many uses. One of the newer and most fascinating uses for children and Appaloosas is that of hunter, jumper and English pleasure mounts. With the Appaloosa heart, spirit, desire, and willingness to extend himself, we no doubt will see increasing number of good colorful mounts under English tack. Many show committees see fit to regularly include children's classes as part of their program. Children's Western Pleasure classes tend to become larger and larger as the number of Appaloosa shows increase. Occasionally you'll even see some adults take a back seat to the youngsters in the open stock horse, trail horse, stake and stump races. 10 patience of his blanket hipped mount, gets un-tangled eventually? The sleigh being pulled by a fine leopard filly; she doesn't seem to mind the sleigh bells plus the noisy Christmas carols. On and on we can all recall the many fine memories of splendid displays of understanding between child and horse. These are the most worthwhile things. Nothing can be more rewarding to a parent or a grandparent than to observe the accomplishment and self assurance of a child and horse, Appaloosa horse, that is. The New Mexico Appaloosa Horse Club has seen the value of providing Junior Division Classes in their approved shows. Their rules state in order for a show to be approved it must include a number of Junior classes. This outstanding regional club, which is hosting the National Show in June of 1964, has established a new first for a National

11 Show. This year young exhibitors will have a grand total of 13 Junior Division Classes to choose from. This speaks well of the foresight of our New Mexico breeders. It has been said by many breeders that "the Appaloosa can do all of the things that a youth program would require. What can we do to encourage youth to use the Appaloosa? The answer to this question can be very simple provide recognition and leadership at the regional club level. Without question, the future of the Appaloosa lies in developing and holding the present interest of our young people; just as the very future of our American way of life will be determined in the same manner. A program broader than that for the members of 4-H and FFA clubs is needed. We must not exclude individuals because they haven't an affiliation of some recognized organization. Breeders will support youth programs by providing better quality horses at more realistic prices when they realize that these same horses can acquire recognition for their breeding program. Organization and the training of leadership at the regional club level will take joint effort from the breed association and the local breeder. The progress of a youth program will primarily depend upon recognition. This goal can best be accomplished through judging and grooming clinics, publishing of educational bulletins, field trips, films and lectures. Where funds and resources are needed at the state level, the regional club would be responsible to acquire these and aid in promoting the program in general. It is of utmost importance that a youth program be initiated immediately. I urge all interested people to help start the necessary promotion for a National Appaloosa Youth Activities program so that in the near future we will have a program second to none for our "Kids and Appaloosas the perfect combination." A is the High Point Senior Gelding of the Central Atlantic Club for He also accumulated a record number of points in a variety of area performance classes, such as Western Pleasure, English Pleasure, Trail, Hunter, Reining and Western Riding, to be named the Central Atlantic Club's High Point Performance Horse for 1967 and again in 1968! Recent significant OPEN performance victories for MR. A are the Champion Western Pleasure Horse honors in OPEN competition in the Grapefruit Circuit in Florida early in 1968, the OPEN Western Pleasure Champion of the Quentin, Pa., show a large, established allbreed show, and the High Point Small Hunter of Virginia for 1968 the only Appaloosa entered in this stiff "other breed" competition. MR. A is a G. E. A. R. Champion. Only three horses have earned this title since the inception of G. E. A. R. (Greater Eastern Appaloosa Regionals) in The area covered by G. E. A. R. are the states east of Ohio and north of North Carolina, involving seven regional clubs. The over-all point system parallels the rigid Champion requirements so, as you can see, this was no small feat for this great gelding. MR. A is walking proof that a foundationbred "pure" Appaloosa can do it all and look good while doing it. He is a credit to the Appaloosa breed and he certainly does go a long way in promoting good geldings! MR. A is a young horse and it is entirely possible that he could climb to even higher victories in the years to come. MR. A, ridden by Miss Gay Wright, wins the Appaloosa English Pleasure Class at the Cherry Hill show, and the Pennsylvania Livestock Exposition Appaloosa Show at Hazrisburg. MR. A and rider/trainer Richard Zimmerman are a top team with wins like the Grand Champion Open Western Pleasure Horse, Grapefruit Circuit in Florida and the Champion Open Western Pleasure Horse at the Cooper Hospital Show. 13 MR. Blood Will Tell By Maxine Lewis It has been said that a good horse is no accident. It requires not only a good papa and a good mama, but matings that have the qualities to compliment each other. Sizzle Britches, at Circle L Farms, Stilesville, Ind., is a spotted blanketed chestnut stallion, sired by Apache F-730 and out of Babe of the HooDoos F-1960, both one-time national champions. Apache F-730 is gone and there is very little of his blood available. He was shown in 6 National Appaloosa Shows, was champion halter stallion once and either champion or reserve champion horse 6 times. In addition, he was once National Premier sire of Performance Horses. He was a blanketed chestnut and was sired by a Thoroughbred named Better Still, who won one race with a purse of $1,125 as a two-year-old. His dam was a black spotted white Appaloosa mare with a Thoroughbred dam. This back-ground gives good reason for Apache F-730 possessing the terrific amount of speed and stamina and passing this on to his get. Babe of the HooDoos F-1960 is out of a Thoroughbred mare named HooDoo Lady and sired by Toby III, who was later gelded so that he could be used in movies. It is through this eight generations of "Toby" blood tracing back to Knobby that gives Sizzle Britches his ability to pass on the Appaloosa color. He sires quite a few blacks and his colts are usually loudly colored, often black with a huge blanket filled with big shadow-ring spots. While he has sired a few flashy fillies, most of them are more subdued and about half of them are foaled solid-colored. About half of these color as a yearling or two-year-old-not a bad average for a horse that is more than one-half Thoroughbred even though both his parents are foundation Appaloosas. His fillies when bred to a Patchy F-416-Sundance F-500 cross produce exceptional color. The mares with which Sizzle Britches has best combined have also gone back to Knobby through one branch or another, or have had a leopard back- ground. Both Patchy F-416 and Chief of Fourmile descend from Knobby, who antedates the stud book yet has made quite an impact upon the Appaloosa breed of today. The dam of Chief of Fourmile was a full sister to Toby T. And, Knobby sprang from animals having an infusion of leopard characteristics. Thus, benefiting from past breeders' years of experience and crossing carefully selected individuals of the "Toby" blood with that of Patchy 416 and Chief of Fourmile, all strains from Knobby and blended with Sundance F-500 with some Thoroughbred from Apache F-730 and Patchy F-416 gives results with strong Appaloosa characteristics, color and disposition along with refinement, yet the size necessary for today's interest in jumping Appaloosas. Appaloosa News ~ May 1969 Going Too Far To Find That Appaloosa? By Faith Montgomery Hey there! You who are looking far afield for greener pastures while standing in your own field of clover. Should you turn your gaze close by, happy surprises may be in store for you. Many small breeders have not the finances to travel and show far from home, but often the quality of their colored jewels are unsurpassed anywhere. Yes, the famous blood lines of Patchy F416, Apache F730, Joker B, Red Eagle and many others are dispersed throughout the whole nation and beyond. But, there are also other good lines available. Many are passed on through their dams who are little known, but of superb quality. This author has a lovely foundation mare F1463 that was sired by the stallion, Nobby F660 (not Knobby) used by Guy Lamb, (article Jan Toby breeders) one of the early breeders. This mare, bred to four different stallions, has produced seven foals, all well colored. Two stallions were of other breeds and two were half Appaloosa. Each of her colts that was shown has been a consistent ribbon winner. Her former owners used her as a "dude" horse. At the time I purchased her, the owners "thought" she had some papers. That she did and what a find! There are more of such horses around, especially here in the Northwest. Since the registry of the Appaloosa is relatively new, many superior horses have no known pedigree, or are known only on one side. Some have only known ancestry such as "Midnight Requisition, out of Palouse Ridge, by Trailer, by Moonlight." Just because your local breeder may be a small businessman or a laborer with only a few head of stock does not mean that he couldn't have top quality he surely can. Two hundred to four hundred miles looks like the ends of the earth to many of us. I know several top local horses that couldn't find the time or money, or both, for the trip to the National Performance Show, even though they were well-qualified. In the business 9 years, I speak from only a little experience. Every horse I have shown has been in the ribbons one time or another at halter, performance, or racing. With the tremendous competition these days it behooves a buyer to have a critical eye for. superior conformation along with color, but horses of top type can be found nearly anywhere, perhaps within Shine raced 6 times in st at 1/2 mile in open competition and 2nd and 3rd at regional Appaloosa shows against such horses as Speck-U-Lation, Festus Hagen, Charlie Brown H., 1st in first Appaloosa race run at Clallam County Fair for 1/4 mile. He has placed in gelding pleasure. or 30 miles of your own home. Our regional club, the Western Washington Regional, has a roster of club members and addresses (many are breeders) that is sent to each member. Perhaps other clubs do the same. If you are a potential buyer, take a pleasant Sunday drive to the farms of your Appaloosa-owning neighbors or go to a local open or Appaloosa show, and talk to participants. Of course, they'll talk your leg off about their favorite breed. If they don't happen to have the particular horse you want, chances are they will refer you to other local breeders who may. (Most Appaloosa breeders are open minded enough to give reference.) Beauty is as beauty does. A first hand look at that colored king or queen may be found at a show, parade, on the trail, or in a backyard pasture. Older horses proven producers are sometimes more advi s- able buys than are ones too young to have proven themselves. Check their background and check the produce. As has been said, 400 miles has been my limit. There are many others like myself with first-class horses. DON'T HURRY SO FAR SO FAST that you miss that champion or future champion right next door.

17 QUESTION: If it is possible to obtain an official description of what has been decided is the ideal Appaloosa horse, I would like to obtain one. I am aware that every horseman has his own ideas as to how a horse should be built. Personally, I think that, as with people, their build is not as important as their mental characteristics as long as it enables them to get the job done with strength, grace, and efficiency; but one does not sponsor a Miss 5 by 5 to win a beauty contest. It is gratifying to note that the Appaloosa Horse Club seems to be supporting a conformation at halter that will win at performance. (this Question and Answer is copied from the Appaloosa News ~ January, 1962) ************* QUESTION: Is Inbreeding acceptable? ANSWER: Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the rather tragic results of inbreeding. People seem to hear of some prepotent inbred sire but they never hear of the high percentage of undesirables and unusable animals which result form inbreeding. Inbreeding not only increases the possibility of serious conformation defects, but it also increases the dominance of inherited weaknesses. In addition, inbred animals suffer loss of fertility, a loss of disposition, and a loss of vitality. We strongly discourage inbreeding in Appaloosas. QUESTION: What is a parrot mouth? 17 ANSWER: A parrot mouth is an undershot jaw. The front teeth do not come in direct contact. This is an inherited defect which Appaloosa owners should avoid. Following are illustrations of a normal mouth and a Parrot mouth. Normal Mouth Parrot Mouth Refer to a copy of the Appaloosa judging card. Under Soundness you will find parrot mouth listed as an unsoundness. A horse that is unsound would lose 20 points in judging and would therefore not place. The reason parrot mouth is considered much more serious in breeding animals than in a gelding is because it is inherited. Another reason is because geldings are usually used and by being used they are kept up and fed which makes it possible for them to maintain weight. If they spent long periods of time in a pasture as do mares they would find it very difficult to survive. Some years ago in an issue of Appaloosa News we carried a short article on the parrot mouth condition and also showed an illustration which illustrated it. In screening for an Appaloosa Horse Club approved sale most screening committees disqualify horses which are over one-half tooth or more. A horse that is over less than one-half tooth can usually get enough to eat. A horse that is over a full tooth or more is in real trouble if put out to pasture. APPALOOSAS IN OUTER MONGOLIA were photographed by United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, who has spent a great deal of time in the Northwest and is acquainted with the Appaloosa breed. These pictures shown above and at right were loaned to Palmer Wagner of Garfield, Washington, by Mrs. Douglas. The pictures show three typical Appaloosa patterns. Take note of the saddles. 35 Survey Says? As FAHR continues to grow both in registered horses as well as members, we feel the need to provide more for the membership than just a horse registry and a newsletter. We are aware that members have a varying range of interests and hope to investigate the needs of all members to see how we can best suit the group as a whole. Please take the time to review the following survey and return it to FAHR at your earliest convenience. 1) If FAHR were to have an Annual Horse Show would you participate? 2) If you answered yes to the above question, how many horses do you think you would try to bring? These shirts are of a casual design and will promote FAHR at your favorite equine activities. The long sleeve shirts went over so well at the annual meeting that we are offering a short sleeve shirt, too. The clothing are in men s sizes, so please be sure of your size before ordering, as we cannot offer refunds or exchanges. We are unable to keep an inventory due to the cost of the shirts, however, FAHR will place two orders a year for the clothing items. In the fall we hope to add a jacket with the logo, as well.
