2 ALLEGAN COUNTY 4-H HORSEMASTER PROGRAM LEVEL FIVE Updated 3/18/2016 Introduction: Congratulations! You have now reached the highest level in the Allegan County 4-H Horsemaster Program. You must be a skilled rider with excellent horsemanship and mounted on a very wellschooled horse or pony. You may take pride in your accomplishments and dedication to complete the levels that you began. You have acquired a balanced seat and learned to use the aids to communicate with your horse. You have grown into young adults, exercising judgment that has developed through broadening your knowledge base and practical experiences. In Level Five of the Horsemaster Program, you will use your hard work and knowledge to enjoy a truly fine horse and/or improve horses you ride and handle. This level will introduce you to more advance skills, greater challenges, increased knowledge and continuing opportunities to grow personally. As you advance, you will discover that there is always more, not less, to learn and accomplish. Remember that a true equestrian never stops learning, nor becomes arrogant about his/her abilities. There is always another challenge and more to learn. GOALS & ACHIEVEMENTS Upon completion of Level Five, each 4-H member will be able to: 1. Pass the written test on the Horse Sense & Unmounted sections with a minimum passing score of 85%. 2. Submit short summaries of non-fictional horse books, magazines or articles that have been helpful to you. 3. Give a demonstration at the local, club, county or state level. 4. Have the confidence to participate in other riding activities of special interest, including 4-H and outside activities. 5. Discuss internal/external parasites, their life cycle, prevention, treatment and control. 6. Have knowledge of unsoundness and blemishes. 7. Ride extended gaits. 8. Demonstrate lateral aids, bending, flexing, and two tracking. 9. Execute flawless patterns. 10. Execute a counter canter and explain its significance at a high level of training. 11. Have knowledge of internal organs. 12. Have knowledge of the skeletal structure. 13. Have knowledge of parasites: Symptoms of parasite infestation, Importance of rotation, Demonstration of deworming 14. Have basic teeth knowledge: Number, type, defects, vices that effect mouth. 15. Have knowledge of common diseases that horses are vaccinated against, such as tetanus, EEE, Rhino, etc. 16. Have knowledge of common ailments of horses, such as laminitis, colic and gastric ulcers. 17. Horse talk- horse terms every 4-Her should know: Minimum terms for this section: Genotype, Phenotype, Coggins Test, Ivermectin, colic, Larva, Tetanus, laminitis 18. Perform and complete the mounted riding test with a minimum passing score of 5 for each skill evaluated and an overall minimum score of 75%. 15 LEVEL FIVE MOUNTED SKILLS EVALUATION (Choice of seat is optional) Scoring System -75% passing (with a minimum of 5 on each movement) 1-3 Unsafe - difficulty maintaining control 3-5 Attempt to perform movement but below requirements (Example: wrong lead uncorrected) 5-8 Movement perfom1ed with errors, but corrected (Example: leads, diagonals) 8-10 Movement performed correctly to exceptionally well.
