1 THE ENGLISH NEWS WEEKLY PODCAST JAIME SELWOOD 06/11/2015 The Emotional Robot 1 of 13 FLASHBACK ENW 215: WILD ANIMALS THRIVE IN NUCLEAR NO- GO ZONE Beetles, Lions, Trees & Flowers ENW 339 Introduction This week s English News Weekly podcast reports on the annual report by the International Institute of Species Exploration that lists all the new animals, plants, marsupials and microbes that have been discovered in the last 12 months. In total there have been 18,000 new species discovered, which seems quite a lot, but as more than 20,000 species died out last year then it is actually a worryingly low number. Who are the top 10 species? Why are they the top 10? English News Weekly will try to explain all HOMEPAGE FACEBOOK (c) Jaime Selwood ENW Episode 219 TECHNOLOGY TWITTER twitter.com/enwpodcast

6 4 The English News Weekly Podcast Jaime Selwood 2018 Listening / Reading Listening Welcome to the World s Newest Species Wrong Word Help Listen / Read the news story and choose the circle the words which are mistakes. 339 Welcome to the World s Newest Species 1 This week s podcast sees ENW delving into the depths of the world s white ocean, climbing to the top of some of the largest trees and avoiding some very tiny bugs! No, we are not heading out on safari or exploring the river but introducing some of the newly discovered species that have been uncovered in the last 12 months. 2 For the 11 th year in a row the International Institute of Species Exploration (IISE) has released its list of all the new species that have been discovered around the world. The New York-based organisation s scatterbrain publication details around 18,000 new species of microbes, plants and animals. Interestingly, the report also includes one animal species that has been extinct for 23 billion years! 3 The motivation behind the IISE report is to document and highlight the vast number of species that can be found on Earth. The group s other reason for making the report is to record all the old species before they become extinct. The IISE 2018 report is based on the work of a team of international taxonomists - creationists who group species into categories. Sadly, they have already estimated that around 20,000 species have died out in 2017 alone. 4 One of the founding directors of the IISE, Quentin Wheeler wrote in a news release how concerned the organistaion was at the number of species becoming extinct every year. I'm constantly bored at how many new species show up and the range of things that are discovered. So many of these species - if we don't find them, name them and describe them now, will be found forever wrote Dr Wheeler. 5 The top 10 new species list include a chameleon beetle living in a cave in China, a rare great ape from Europe, an Amazonian giant tree and a single-celled organism discovered in the San Diego Aquarium. Perhaps the most intriguing animal on the list is the Marsupial Lion from Australia. What makes this species different from all the others is that it died-out 23 million years ago! Even more extraordinary is the fact this lion spent most of its life living, hunting and sleeping in very tall rivers! Write the error and the correct word in the box below! END OF PART 3 [360 Words]
