Help Listen / Read the news story and choose the correct word from the choices. Look at the other words in the sentence to help you with your answers! 231 Landmark Rainforest Deal Agreed 1 After more than ten years of negotiating a deal has been made in British Columbia, 1: USA/Canada/Russia that will create one of the largest protected wildlife areas in the world. The deal has been made between the British Columbia (B.C.) state government, environmentalist organisations, first nation groups and logging businesses. It means that 85% of the 32,000 km 2 Great 2: Bear/Cat/Barrier Rainforest on the western coast of Canada will be protected from any further damage. 2 The agreement bans logging in 85% of the rainforest and ends hunting of the grizzly bear within all First Nation territories. Additionally, hunting within the rainforest of the spirit bear will be 3: allowed/sold/banned. Uniquely for black bears the spirit bear has white fur and so has seen its numbers decline due to it being popular with hunters. Other wildlife protected under the agreement includes wolves, 4: cats/cougars/tigers, orcas, otters, mountain goats, deer and humpback whales. 3 The remaining 15% of the Great Bear Rainforest will allow for trees to be cut and logged, but the number and age of the tree will be closely monitored. The deal has also been supported by all 26 5: First/Tribal/Old Nation groups who live within the borders of the rainforest. The deal will mean that each group can decide who can work, live and 6: fish/hunt/camp on their lands. 4 The Great Bear Rainforest is also the place for one of the most amazing scenes in nature, the migration of salmon from the 7: Pacific/Atlantic/Southern Ocean through to the forest rivers. The salmon swim upstream to spawn in the safety of the many small forest rivers. The 8: trout/salmon/sharks migration is popular with the forest s bear species as it provides a useful and continued source of food. 5 After the deal was agreed Valerie Langer director of Forest Ethics one of the organisations involved in protecting the rainforest said, It is one of the most visionary forest conservation plans on 9: Earth/World/land. Christy Clark the premier of B.C. was also delighted by the deal. In an official statement Ms Clark said, Under this agreement, more forest will be protected, while still ensuring opportunities for 10: monetary/economic/financial development and jobs for local First Nations.
