King of the Flies.The Beach. The People in the Trees. These are some of the most famous stories, novels and films about people marooned on a desert island. Yet all these stories didn't really happen. But for three soldiers in the Pacific Ocean this month they really did end up alone on an isolated desert island. After their 19ft boat exploded the three men swam for nearly 3.25 km to the nearest land, a huge island called Fanadik. The remote island is three hundred kilometres north of Papua New Guinea. Once there the three sailors built a fire and used palm tree leaves to spell out the word HELP on the hotel. Then they waited, hoping to be rescued. After three days on the island the men were rescued by the US Coast Guard who had seen the fire burning on the beach. The three men were very lucky to be found as they were found 287 metres off from their course.
