4 4 Precision Rifleman North Texas State VFS Championship at Denton... Ralph Stewart is Two-Times the Champion The Texas VFS Championship is over for a well fought event. Ryan started the morning wielding his 30 like a club on everyone. There was no mercy as he pounded out his X. Twelve other good souls however would not give up so easily and managed to pull a 250 to remain in striking distance. As we all know, the Texas afternoon and 200 yard distance will extract its pound of flesh for the wind Gods 100 yards for show and 200 yards for dough! And, so it begins with each shooter and bench slowly being consumed as a well shot X is moved into the 9 or even 8 ring with the small flip of a tail. No apologies were provided as competitors dragged back to the loading area, eyes downcast, and the cleaning rods bowing as its rammed home again and again looked like a tree being sawed into. Fear prevented most from asking the simple question how did it go that time? knowing full well Dr. Tim could blow any minute! To the end, several shooters you know within their heart of hearts were hoping, the leader would just drop one point; just one small mistake is all that s needed to swing the balance of things, but it was not to be as Ralph Stewart completed the 200 yard event clean and for the second year was crowned Texas State VFS Champion. Good job to all the winners and of course, a great big thanks to everyone who took the time and effort to support the Denton Club - I appreciate all you guys. 5 Casper Benchrest Shooters VFS Match... Don Carter Takes the Trophy & the Dough! July, 2013 Precision Rifleman 5 Fifteen shooters got together for Casper s Benchrest s Money Shoot. On Saturday the plan was to shot VFS and Sunday the Hunter class. Sometimes plans have to change, but more on that later. For the VFS match, Jack Foster reigned supreme with a beautiful X. In fact, there were many a fine score posted in the 100-yard aggregate; a total of six 250 scores were shot which set the stage for some fine competition. When speaking with Jack about the match, he said all day Saturday there were the best conditions he had ever seen in Casper; he said there was no need for him to correct for windage on the 100-yard line. This is a shock for Casper, as the town sits at a juxtaposition of mountain ranges create a venturi effect concentrating the wind velocity in the area. Getting back to the match, Jack said he just changed his barrel from a PPC to a 30BR and added a drop-port Viper action. This allowed him to gauge the conditions and determine whether to rapid fire or hold and correct as optimal. All was well until the 200-yard began. Things looked like more of the same until the third match, when things became unglued. Jack said nothing went where it was supposed to; there was as much vertical as horizontal with shots landing at 10, 2, 4 and 7. Yuck! The weather didn t hold and rain began pouring with vigor and a vote was taken to end the match on Saturday cancelling the planned Hunter Class match scheduled for the following Sunday. When Jack went to retrieve his flags, he had to slog through about 7 of water. As mother nature is sure to have the last laugh, after the vote to cancel the match was taken, wouldn t you know that the rain ceased...at least for a while. As Jack was driving back home to the north, he said there was clear sailing from Casper north to Sheridan and then the deluge hit again from north of Sheridan all the way up past Billings, Montana. In fact, it kept pouring for the rest of the weekend. Yuck again. Don Carter is running solo this spring. Sandy Carter, January s cover girl, returned to Indiana for a few weeks, so Don is running a VFS circuit throughout the western states. Don s on a two-win roll right now. He won the Northern Colorado VFS match and again this match at Casper. Don said Saturday s shoot was pretty pleasant until the very last target. While they were loading for the last target, the rainstorm hit. Don knew if he kept it in the middle, he d do well. He shot 13 sighters to get 5 shots on target. He said you had to pay close attention if you didn t want to drop a bunch of points at the end. Don began the match shooting 117 grain Fowler bullets then switched and bought 500 of Rich Carpenter s 110 grain bullets he bought from Jack Foster at that match. There was no stopping Don then. When he later asked Jack whether he could buy more of those bullets, Jack said he wanted to keep them for himself! Smart move. This match was a money shoot and the club distributed cash for 1st Place at 100-yards, 1st Place at 200-yards and top three finishes in the Grand Aggregate. Correspondingly, Don Carter won $246, Jack Foster won about $140. Not too shabby a take. Although things did not quite go according to plan, it appears to have been a good match all the same. 7 July, 2013 Precision Rifleman 7 Nifty New Super Slick Material for Bags! Grab your April issue of Precision Rifleman and take a closer look at the front cover. (If you can t find your copy and need to order a replacement, I can send you another for $5. (Shameless plug, I know.) I wasn t aware of it at the time, but Jack Snyder is sporting a front rest with a new material. I got a call from Boyd Allen tipping me off to the new material and called Jack to get the scoop. Benchrest shooters are always pushing the envelope in precision and accuracy and this is demonstrated in a number of ways; load development, powder experimentation, etc. One factor in precision does not have to do with the rifle as much as it does the peripheral equipment, ie: the bags upon which the rifles are placed in competition. The focus here is to have a clean release thru recoil with a better return to battery. In the past, benchrest shooters have used silicon or dryer sheets to make front and rear bag tops slick and yet retain their taught shape but now their is new material available from 3M that is reflective and super slick which can be substituted for cordura on all rear bag ears and front bag tops. The material is embedded with microscopic glass beads that are very durable and friction free. According to Jack Snyder of Edgewood Bags, this new material allows a smoother recoil and better returnability of your rifle. Over the last few years, this product has slowly evolved in the benchrest community. If I got the story right, Larry Baggett first used the material and had it draped over his front bag rest during matches. He gave some to John Horn to try as well. John liked the material very well and thought if it works this well when it is simply draped over the bag, how much better it would be if it were sewn into the bag? John invested some time and money to hunt down manufacturers and forwarded a sample to Jack Snyder. The rest, as they say is history. There were a handful of Texas benchrest shooters involved in the initial product testing; one of which was Gulf Coast Regional Director, Scott Hunter. Scott said, in 40 years of benchrest shooting, I have tried every bag product in the market and these super-slick bags are by far, the best I ve ever used. Since Jack began offering the superslick bags for sale, the benchrest community has been quick to adopt the new material and the market has just exploded. Jack says the advantage is that you can tighten the stock down against the side. It releases cleanly thru recoil with a better return to battery. If you set up the gun really well, this should help any shooter run a condition quicker. Audrey Brown

10 10 Precision Rifleman Central Utah Benchrest Club Hosts the Utah State Championship - Leg #1 Dana Andrus Wins Sporter Dave Woodward Takes Unlimited Dana Andrus Wins the Two-Gun Written by Jim Erickson May 4-5, 2013 It was truly a glorious weekend. We experienced a long cold, snowy winter in northern Utah followed by a cold, wet spring through April. This all changed the week before our tournament as nice weather moved in. Temperatures in the morning were mid 40 s and afternoons in the high 60 s with partly cloudy skies and light winds. Mirage was manageable and there were no bugs pestering us! They ran the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, Sunday was Cinco de Mayo and we got to shoot the first leg of the Utah State Championship all weekend. And, to top it off, we got to celebrate Bruce and Pam Black s forty-first wedding anniversary on Sunday with a beautifully delicious cake. Congratulations again Mr and Mrs Black. You are a marvelous couple and we are delighted to have you with us! Janet Goulette got the jump on everyone with a.169 group in Match 1 of the Sporter 100 and followed it up with the small group for the yardage; a.125 in Match 3. Gil Graser took Match 2 honors with a.161 group, while Dave Gibson won Match 4 with a.148 and Lowell Frei won Match 5 with a.166 small group. All stainless steel components with aluminum handle. Includes both large and small punch housing and spring assembly. Concentricity Gauge This type of indicator was designed specifically for checking rotating diameters and in fact is exactly the type of gauge used in the machining industry for decades to measure run out; the very thing that we as hand loaders are striving to minimize or eliminate. st At 21 Century Shooting it is our goal to modernize an industry that has seen little change over the years. Our concentricity gauge is a perfect example. Neck Turning Lathe The floating design of our neck turner and the universal floating case driver allows the case mouth (bore) to run on the arbor absolutely concentric. Therefore allowing O.D. to be turned concentric with I.D. The tail-stock creates a horizontal inline support DOES NOT DRIVE OFF THE PRIMER POCKET. NO PRIMER POCKET OR CASE DAMAGE. for the base of the case. Also allows the operator to keep both hands on the power screw driver or drill. This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Case holder drivers are designed to be the most gentle driver, yet providing an adequate hold.

15 July, 2013 Precision Rifleman 15 Tri Cities MSA VFS & Hunter By Rick DeGroat April 27, 2013 Only six brave souls challenged the wind for our first VFS match of the year, the rest must have got blown off the road on the commute to the range. I always say if you don t like to shoot in the wind you won t be doing much shooting in the Northwest. Paul really amazed us by dropping only 1 point at 200 yards to win the aggregate with a real fine x. Glen was 2nd with x and Dick was 3rd with x. The rest of us just enjoyed the windy day and were glad when it was over. Only four of us braved the wind and some of us wished we hadn t. I personally found out that big ears aren t all that good wind indicators but will work if you don t have anything else. Paul did it again by winning both 100 & 200 yard matches with 482 7X with Glen coming in second with X. 18 18 Precision Rifleman Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club s Jeff Yost Wins the Allen Bench Trophy April 6-7, 2013 Eleven hardy shooters gathered for the first match of the year, which is the second annually held Allen Bench Memorial. If this sounds confusing, it is because Allen Bench was a very popular benchrest enthusiast and experimenter who resided here at Tacoma for some time. In his later years moved to the Tri-Cities area. They too hold an annual Allen Bench Memorial match. (See May issue, page 15.) The weather was cold and rainy, as is the tradition of the first match of the season. If you were lucky or quick on your feet, you could get your flags set without getting rained on. Winds were light to moderate and switchy. Saturday morning started out with the LV100. Larry Boers took 3rd with a.2326, Rick Graham 2nd with a.2206 and Jeff Yost took 1st with a.2142 agg. Jeff Yost also took small group honors with a.111. After lunch break we moved to 200 to finish the LV match. Jeff Lewis took 3rd with a.2587, Jeff Yost took 2nd with a.2559 and Larry Boers took 1st place with a Jeff Lewis took small group with a.233. 19 Get Inspired! Richard Brensing Is A One-Man Benchrest Crusader. Introducing Charlene s Meadow in Kansas. July, 2013 Precision Rifleman 19 This range is what I have been building instead of shooting as much as I would like this year. My goal is to introduce people around my area to the sport of benchrest. I live in southwest Kansas. To this end, I have built six benches on the firing line, with the option of adding more later on. I have shot at many different ranges and have combined the good ideas of each of these ranges into the development of Charlene s Meadow. This picture depicts the old shooting shack in the foreground and the newly built benchrest line in the background. We will offer fellow shooters the option of shooting short range or long range, as the range covers 100,200, , and 1000 yards. My goal is to be able to hold NBRSA matches at some date. Not for sure when that will be. It all started out with my girls play house. The shooting shack was originally a play house for my three girls. When they got older and outgrew the A look inside the shooting-shack play house, I told them that it was time for me to play. So I took the play house and put it on a concrete slab, added a canopy and a single bench that would allow a right and left hand shooter to practice at the same time. I ran underground conduit out to the 200 yard board so we could shoot at night. There s nothing quite like shooting until 2AM! As I began to get enough shooters, I decided to start a new range. That s how the whole project got started. It s only 100 yards from my house to the range and about the same to my shop, so If I am testing a rifle and I want to change something it s just a few steps back to the shop. It really is a class act. I have spent months on this thing so I am kind of biased. Right now I have target boards for score, but I will be working on the boards and backers for group soon. Richard Brensing & Audrey Brown The rifle in the picture is my Ranch Gun It was stocked by Darrell Loker of Loker Customs and air brushed by his son Brian Loker. Smithed by myself.

20 20 Precision Rifleman SW Louisiana s April VFS Match By Wayne Bengston It was a beautiful day for the match. The temperature started in the 50 s and ended in the 70 s. The sun was bright and the sky was clear, which stirred up the mirage later on in the morning. The mirage wasn t as bad as I had seen it, but it was enough to wonder where the real center of the bull s eye was at times. The wind was light and at our backs from 3 to 7 mph out of the southeast. It would also gust and switch to the south, then to the east. This was more pronounced in the afternoon during the 200 yd. match. Rollin Beeson showed everybody how shooting is supposed to be done by taking first in the 100 yd. match with a clean x. Seven of the other shooters were able to stay clean with a 250 score at the 100, so the match would be settled at 200 yds. By the beginning of the 5th match of the 200, Mike Guillot, Larry Tilley and Wayne Bengston were tied for 1st, having dropped only one point each. Mike held onto his score and was able to shoot clean, with Larry and Wayne dropping another point each, giving Mike a 249 and the win. Wayne came in second by beating Larry on the x count. We had a good turnout and a good time with a lot of tough shooting competition. Mike Wall drove the farthest (175 miles), but he said it didn t count because he was going this way anyway and just stopped short of his destination to shoot with us. We still appreciate him stopping. We also thank and congratulate Larry Tilley for some jambalaya and cake from his 50th wedding anniversary celebration he brought out for everyone to enjoy. We did miss a couple of regulars that were shooting at the Texas State VFS match: Kenny Kooperman and Mike Lowien. Congratulations Mike on taking 2nd at the 100 and 3rd Grand Agg. at the Texas State. We want to thank all of the competitors for coming and participating, Francis Broussard for running the match and scoring, and last but not least, Alex Celestine, Wayne s grandson, for helping change the targets and rooting for his Paw Paw. 22 22 Precision Rifleman Tim Humphreys Roasts the Rest & Wins the Two-Gun Fairchance Gun Club s 25th Annual HOG ROAST Sixty nine benchrest shooters who arrived at Fairchance Gun Club for the 25th annual Hog Roast were greeted by warm and windy weather. Did I mention windy weather? It was a little more than breezy all weekend causing everyone to pull their hair out. Yikes! We were grateful to have several new shooters attend this as their first match. It was great to see some new shooters indeed! People were very impressed with the completely new roof Club had constructed last Fall over the entire firing line. The new roof is very nice and now covers all the shooters equipment behind the benches. This will bode very well for the upcoming NBRSA Group Nationals scheduled to be held here in September. It was great to see many old friends again from near and far. Our Hog Roast match is well attended, particularly this year s match as much for the hog we were roasting in celebration of our 25th anniversary as for practical range practice in anticipation of the Group Nationals. Many shooters arrived Thursday and Friday to get some much needed rifle tuning done and to catch up with the latest happenings in the world of benchrest. Saturday morning brought some switching, mild-winds as we kicked-off the Hog Roast match with the HV-100 class. Everyone s good friend, Smiley Hensley, led the way finishing in first place with a.2312 agg. Ever steady, Ted Heindselman took second place with a.2438 agg. I somehow managed third place with a.2487 Harley eat all of my snacks Baker took fourth place with.2530 agg. and up from Hill Country USA (aka Southern Ohio) Tim Humphreys finished fifth place with a Saturday afternoon brought warm and windy weather to start the LV100 yard stage. The ripening afternoon 3 o clock cross-winds would be a gentle precursor of what was to greet us on Sunday afternoon %$#@! Tony Alexander conducted a fine shooting clinic with a first place finish with a.2160 agg. Tony apparently was unaware of the strong winds that caused all other 68 shooters great fits! Master machinist, Jeff Peinhardt, showed us how it s done with a second place finish with a.2370 agg. Smiley Hensley showing great pre-super Shoot form came in third place with a.2560 agg. Don Rosetti with a fresh and perfect haircut, finished fourth with a.2682 agg. and fifth place was one of the original Oak Ridge Boys, Danny Pritt, who shot a.2752 agg under very difficult conditions to say the least. As in years past, Fairchance Gun Club sponsored a Hog Roast barbecue dinner for all the shooters. It was a great meal and enjoyed by all except me Apparently the caterer thought I would be better served up on a rotating spit over hot coals instead of shooting and did his best to try and capture me on Saturday morning. Alas I was still able to out-run the skinny, caterer and was able to shoot. (Never chase a plus-size man with a full-can of Brake Cleaner, Mr. Caterer!) That was a close one for sure. As a tradition, the loading area stayed occupied into the night with Tim Humpreys telling tales of days gone by in the holler. It was great to have our good friend, Danny Suptin back shooting with us again. On to Sunday and the 200-yard stage of completion in the morning, the weatherman decided we really needed to have a lot of very strong 3 o clock cross-winds to start the LV200 stage. Wow! Mark Engle, all-around great guy and first time Hog Roaster, displayed a fine set of his shooting skills with a 1st place finish in the LV200 with a.2937 agg. Second place was the ever steady I don t need to practice Danny Pritt with a.3338 agg. Jeff Ferrett was third with a.3484 agg. Fourth place was little Harley Baker with a.3510 agg. and fifth was good looking Russell Rains with a.3622 agg. Needless to say the winds were tough as the large aggs show. Again, this was just the start of the fun that awaited us as the hard winds followed in the afternoon HV200 stage Over the past 14 years of shooting, I, like you, have encountered some tough crosswind conditions; but the 3 o clock extremely strong, pulsing winds on Sunday afternoon were something we would rather not endure during a match.a number of top shooters very understandably shot off the record target. My normal 3 o clock/six-ring hold would not suffice in consistently keeping my sighter shots from going off the sighter target. Ouch! Thank God for some well needed nail head aim points I used on the target frame so I could keep my shots on the left-hand side of the record moth ball! WOW! The wind is pretty darn bad when you can t keep your Sinclair match timer from blowing off your %$#@! bench top! Tim Humpreys made it look easy, winning the HV-200 agg. with a very fine.3456 agg. Second place was Hal Drake who also showed his wind reading prowess with a.3635 agg. Third place was a fine performance by Joey Krupa with a.3885 agg. First time Hog Roaster, Bill McIntyre finished fourth with a.4055 agg. and Jeff Peinhardt (proud papa) finished fifth with a.4226 agg. For the record, Jeff s 15 year-old son, Wyatt

23 (future Benchrest Hall of Famer) finished in 6th place with a.4348 agg. Great job, Wyatt! Just by you a good used gun and start there. Move up as your pocket book and desires dictate. A known gun will still perform well and your skills will improve with the continued exposure to the many aspects of benchrest shooting. Every once in a while there is a lot of life left in the gun/barrel when one picks up a used gun. Sometimes the previous owner wants the gun back after he realizes his mistake in selling a shooter. We had a new shooter at our range; his first benchrest match ever. He had just purchased a used benchrest gun and was here to try it out. Well, after the first five matches, he was leading the pack of veterans by and had shot the small group in the first two matches. At break time and switching over to 200 yards, there was a lot of congratulations but some discussion on the wisdom of selling a shooter. We don t want to mimimize the skill of the shooter. Kenny Stone had observed some matches last year as a spectator but over the winter he decided he wanted to compete. He was fortunate to find a gun and equipment for sale from one of our club members. It appears he made some good purchases but it is now apparent that he is a fast learner and a fierce competitor. We welcome Newbie Kenny Stone to Oak Hill Benchrest and hope his success continues, much to the chagrin of the previous gun owner (Jerry King). At 200 yards the veterans started fighting back. Our most experienced shooter/gunsmith, Jim Carstensen, started bearing down and took command of the match at 200 yards. Veteran shooters just don t want those kids getting all of the wood/attention. This was our first match of the season. Weather started cool 40 s but warmed to 60 s by ending time. We have had a wet spring with rivers flooding and water everywhere, so it was a welcome match today to have some fun and get

25 out into the sun. Hope to see everyone at July s match. Bring a friend or a newbie. Desert Sportsman Rifle Club Ron Carter Is The SW VFS Regional Champion There s more to do than gamble and see shows on the strip here in Las Vegas. On May 4, summer-like weather greeted shooters for the Southwest Regional Varmint for Score match. As is typical for this time of the year, mirage likes to challenge the shooters. During the summer we start at the farthest distance first in the morning. Continuing his winning streak from last month, Ron Carter once again showed us that nice guys can finish first. Thanks goes out to Tom Debacco, Pete Savage and Don Carter, the three Musketeers from Arizona who faithfully attend our matches. Don t forget to mark your calendars for the Nationals this October here in Las Vegas. We re shooting 100/200 short range and 200/300 long rangeall in one week! As an added bonus for those who compete in both Nationals, Ron Carter, Winner Southwest VFS Regional, poses with Keith Myers, Range Aficionado they will be eligible to win a brand new Saguaro action, compliments of Doc Marsh. 26 26 Precision Rifleman Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest May 11, 2013 It is not easy to see grown men cry. What started out as a nice calm morning that lasted through the first light gun group and into the second light gun sighter period, suddenly turned malevolent. Before the second record group, the wind came on like a hurricane out of the south east. From the elevated perch on the Sahuaro shooting line, we could look out across the Arizona desert and see the blowing dust raging far away. We knew it was not going to let up any time soon. That wind kept up for the rest of the match. Nobody had a wind meter to see exactly what the numbers were, but most of us guessed it to be lulls of 12 to 15, with gusts to well over 30 or even 40 miles per hour, which blew everything off of your bench except the gun and rests. When the wind began, all the shooters on the line corrected as much as they dared, but it was mostly in vain. All had some shots off paper and that set the standard for everyone for the rest of the day. The routine came to be, lulls during the sighters, then during the record period, it would blow into the peaks of 30 or 40 mph, taking you off paper on the down wind side. It would be peak winds during sighters, and drop to a lull during record, taking your shots off on the upwind side. Your corrections never seemed to be enough. Trying to memorize a specific condition was total guess work due to the constantly changing direction and velocity. If you could recognize a condition you had sighted for, it would change before you could pull the trigger. Of course, I am just kidding about the crying part; this group has much experience at 1,000 yards, (much of it shooting on this range), and a couple with world records. Everyone took it in stride, knowing that this is all part of the game sometimes. But thankfully, not all the time! Here is how bad it was; out of 285 record shots, there were 100 shots off target! Out of a total possible score of 2850, the total score of the day was only 1061! Literally everybody had some shots off paper. The trophy winners were the ones with the least number of shots off, but the real winners were the ones who were able to learn a few more valuable lessons of shooting long range in nasty winds. It is possible, however, that we set a new world record for the per capita number of shots off target at a sanctioned NBRSA match. What a dubious distinction that would be.
