PRESCOTT SPORTSMEN S CLUB A Brief History Our birthdate was October 20, This is the date in its present form was officially incorporated. Earl Albright was President, Tom Fitch was Vice- President, Dorothy McClymonds was Secretary, and Clause Stallings was Treasurer. The purpose of the Club per our first by-laws was encouragement of organized rifle and pistol shooting... better knowledge and safe handling and proper care of firearms as well as improved marksmanship Shooting is a family sport. It was also recorded: It shall be our further object and purpose to forward the development of honesty, good fellowship, self-discipline, team-play and self-reliance

which are the essentials of good sportsmanship and the foundation of true patriotism. Prescott Sportsmen s Club started at its present site in 1957, with 5 targets, a couple benches, and a building to store equipment. The Club has a special use permit and leases 25 acres North of Prescott from the United States Forest Service, and initially received funds from the State of Arizona s Fish and Game Department to initiate development. The range is open to the public, but is maintained by dues and labor from its members. Dorothy Maddock, spotter for a match (above) A FEW SHOTS FROM OUR PAST One of Prescott Sportsmen s Club s many safety classes (below and opposite) Prescott Sportsmen s Club was preceded by an organization titled Prescott Fish, Game and Protective Association, formed July 12, 1923, with Henry Brinkmeyer elected President. Their purpose was to promote sportsmanship, increase fish and game to facilitate legitimate sport, conserve and protect forest resources, as well as assist authorities to regulate, maintain and increase game, protect ranch stock from predators, prevent forest fires, and work to keep stream quality high in the area. 4/1961 special meeting to discuss adding and financing 10 additional firing points to attract registered matches. This was approved by the Forest Service and a raffle was held for fundraising. The cattle guard was installed. Prescott Sportsmen s Club s first invitational smallbore prone match First on-site live-in range caretaker 1967 received matching grant to construct paving & covering for large-bore rifle area (20 firing points); Pistol Range (15 firing

points); fabrication of large and small bore targets and frame holders; expansion of big bore range, enlargement of target house, and better toilet facilities Report by then President R.S. Butler states PSC has a nice small bore range in excellent shape and all paid for we are the 4 th largest range in the state based on membership Byron Langdell revealed plan to expand Pistol Range from 25 to 50 yards, with municipal & county work doing the expansion earthwork at no cost to the Club so law enforcement can use range without interference PSC officially incorporated a Junior Division received grant to match Club funds to install underground wiring and PA system, and grade a parking lot. Membership: yard Rifle range 18 berm contracted, paid by Club and grant from AZ Fish & Game, equally. The Club had 117 members. The pistol range berm was completed. Club membership dues were $ s SWAT and National Guard hold matches at PSC; Terry Shown held a Hunter s Pistol Match, and Mark Fricke a Combat Pistol Match. In 1984, PSC filed for perpetual incorporation. 1984, Forest Frushon, a former captain of the Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Team for 16 years, and his wife Barbara, moved to Prescott Valley from California in 1995 after Bob retired from Rockwell International. He held the rank of distinguished high power shooter and enjoyed teaching young shooters the love of the sport.. Local businesses donated materials for the center, including Western Shed, Ballard Truss, Lumberman s, Hunt s, True Value, Legendary Builders, and Dunn Edwards.

Dedication of THE BOB FRUSHON JUNIOR S TRAINING FACILITY September 29, 2007 A distinguished high power shooter from Prescott Valley, Bob Frushon was honored by having a building carry his name. Bob taught firearms safety and started a Junior Rifle Team at the Club. Bob applied for and received a grant from the NRA for equipment to start a Junior Team here in Prescott. Evan Ksenzulak was one of Frushon s last students, and Evan organized the Eagle Scout project that built the Training Center in October, Evan went to the National Championships in Ohio recently, and he told me he felt Bob watching over his shoulder, said Barbara Frushon. Service renewed lease for 30 years, nonrenewable. Aug 1984, first Bucky O Neal match. Betty Phillips holds a women s pistol instruction class, and Humboldt held firearm safety field day. Pistol matches were held by the Over The Hill Gang. Jan. 1987, began holding the State Small Bore match at PSC Labor Day weekend. Mark Fricke holds several Women s pistol training sessions s 3/1994, Bill Poole starts small bore matches, and is given last Sunday of each month to hold match. PSC involved in Adopt a Ranch program; work done at Yavapai Ranch (clean-up) and Yolo Ranch (elk jumps) s Nov. 30, 2001: range closed by Prescott National Forest officials due to housing infringement and neighbor complaints, resulting in major range site modifications and improvements. Reopened April : completed major berm restoration. All of the backstops and side berms were built up to meet or exceed current range safety requirements. Sand was placed on the pistol, small bore and 200 yard backstops Other side-bar historical points: Evan Ksenzulak in the process of building the Bob Frushon Training Center (right). In January 1959, the Sportsmen s Club had a radio program on the air Tuesday evenings at 6:20 PM on KYCA. In s, the Women s Rod & Rifle Club held Hunter Safety Course training classes at PSC,

during which time the range was closed until classes were completed. Dorothy Maddock has been Club Secretary from 1979 to present (2009) - - THIRTY years. In September, 2004, she was honored with a plaque and tributes for her 25+ years of service to Prescott Sportsmen s Club. NOTABLE MATCHES HELD AT PSC Prescott Sportsmen s Club s first invitational smallbore prone match won by George Stidworthy, tournament chairman) (June) - Prescott Centennial Smallbore Prone Tournament, won by George J. Stidworthy (3186/210X) 1975, -76, -77 Arizona State Prone Smallbore Championships (August), and in May, 1976 this match was re-named the Bill Hammerle Memorial Match to honor Prescott Sportsmen s Club s Range Caretaker who passed in July st Bucky O Neal match, run by Bob Yaussey. Jan. 1987, began holding the State Small Bore match at PSC on Labor Day weekend, run by Arizona State Rifle & Pistol Association. Bill Poole starts small bore matches, and is given last Sunday of each month to hold match. The match continues to-date (2009) In 2009, Prescott Sportsmen s Club has the following disciplines : Blackpowder Rifle Match, High Power Rifle Match, Vintage Bolt/M-1 Rifle Match, NRA Pistol League Match, Modified Camp Perry Pistol Club Match, From-the-Bench Rifle Match, Official NRA 80 Shot Match and Small Bore Rifle Match. Check our website for schedules. MEMBER HALL OF FAME NEAL KNOX Neal Knox, a champion of firearm civil rights for more than 30 years, past President of Prescott Sportsmen s Club, and the first editor of Gun Week in Knox s dedication to the 2nd Amendment was unquestionable. Following business careers, he began as a freelance writer for several firearms publications. He became active in competitive shooting, and won a national title in benchrest competition. A founder of Gun Week in 1968, Knox left the magazine to become editor of Handloader magazine and help create Rifle magazine in Prescott, AZ. He was also a pilot, holding instrument and multi-engine ratings, and a knowledgeable technical writer on the subject of handloading. Knox recognizing the importance of information on gun legislation for the shooting public, was described as "One of the earliest, and best known" gun rights activists in the nation. He was First Vice President of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in 1996, in the new Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), becoming executive director in He stayed for four years; notably, no federal gun laws were passed. "He was a man of conviction, and a patriot"... "We have lost the most indefatigable fighter for Second Amendment rights in the 20th century," NRA officers Land and Metaksa said. A friend said of him: His legacy, I guess, would be Never quit..

MEMBER HALL OF FAME GEORGE J. STIDWORTHY George Stidworthy, past-president of the Sportsmen's Club, is remembered for innovations to the Club s match offerings. In 1961, George started Prescott Sportsmen s Club s first invitational smallbore prone match (which incidentally, was won by George Stidworthy, tournament chairman.) On a national level, George won the NRA s US Cartridge Company trophy in 1968, -69, and 1971 (a 320-shot Prone, any-sight Championship course; George fired a 3200/288X in 1968.). He also won the NRA s Sam Bond Memorial trophy in 1975 (an aggregate of 16 fired matches shots) with a recorded 6388/503X. It is impossible to measure the impact that George Stidworthy, his wife Grace, and daughter Mary have had or will have on the sport. It suffices to say the game would never be the same without them, the 1600 game in particular. THE FUTURE OF PRESCOTT SPORTSMENS CLUB The Prescott Sportsmen s Club has shared a long history in the Prescott Area and the shooting communities as a whole. Our fifty-plus year existence at our current site will soon, in a short five years, come to an end. This does not mean we will fade away. Working with the Prescott National Forest, Arizona Game and Fish and other organizations we will start a new chapter in the history books for the PSC when we move to our proposed new range in the next few years. The Prescott area and all of Yavapai County need a safe and accessible place for shooters of all types of shooting disciplines to practice their sport. The fact we had a record 7000 plus shooters use our range in 2008 is the primary reason AZ G&F want us to operate the new proposed range. New Range Status On December 12, 2008, I had a meeting with representatives of the Prescott National Forest (PNF) and Arizona Game and Fish (AZGF) on status of the new range. As most of you know AZGF has taken on the role of lessee from the PNF for a new state funded range. AZGF has applied for a special use permit for 80 acres of fenced area, with a safety buffer zone as big as a section of land. The Club will be in charge of range operations and what goes on at the range. In the next few months we will be presenting a Plan of Operation to AZGF. The new complex will be located approximately 1 mile West of I-17, North of S.R 169. While this location is a distance from downtown Prescott we have many members who live in the outlying communities. Both the PNF and AZGF are also looking to what is best for the entire area not just Prescott. This property is surrounded by National

Forest land so encroachment concerns will be removed. I have aerial photos, a topographic outline of the new range and further details at our March Annual Meeting. Both AZGF and PNF have been invited to attend. Last March the PSC was ask to lay out what our dream range would consist of. We presented this plan to AZGF, with that plan they came up with a preliminary plan of what will realistically fit on the new site. Our desire for a 1000 yard range will not fit the property. A 1000 yard range under current standards must have impact and side berms 40 high and 80 wide at the base for the whole 1000 yards. Since a 1000 yard range will not work AZGF proposed a 300 yard rifle range, yard rifle ranges and 2-50 yard pistol ranges. Each range will have 30 firing points. This is only a preliminary suggestion for use of the property. There are plans for an office, storage, parking lot and road leading to the range. I asked the G&F to instead consider designing the longest range to allow for 600 yards. This should fit the proposed site and will require only a 20 backstop with 12 side berms. They will see if this design will fit our proposed site. G&F explained the realities of the current economic environment with state funding and that they have 8 other ranges to support with available funds. We can expect the following from G&F once the Environmental Analyst is completed and the special use permit is secured: 1) funds and resources to break ground on both a 300 and 100 yard range, 2) a road, 3) a parking lot, 4) a complete perimeter fence and 5) a vault restroom. We will provide additional range work, out buildings and residence for our range master/caretaker. On February 4, 2009, AZ G&F sent us an updated footprint of the proposed range complex. It MEMBER HALL OF FAME BOB FRUSHON Retired Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sergeant; competitive target shooter for over 30 years. In addition, Bob was a member of Marine Corp Rifle and Pistol T e a m. H e f o r m e d a Marksmanship Training Unit at El Toro Marine Corp Air Station, in California. He was ranked as Distinguished in High Power rifle. Bob worked with Junior programs and Marine Corps Reserves training. He was proud to have competed at Camp Perry over 30 times. Bob was a two-term President of Prescott Sportsmen s Club, and was Director and Coach of the Junior's Rifle Training. Because of his dedication, the Club built the Bob Frushon Firearms Training Center in his honor. (See separate article following.)

MEMBER HALL OF FAME DON C. NYGORD Don Nygord was a long-time member and Director of Prescott Sportsmen s Club. He was a member of the U S A S h o o t i n g T e a m t h a t represented the USA in international competition for 22 years. 16- time National Champion; member of 1984 and 1988 USA Olympic Team; won individual air pistol World Championship in Owned and managed Nygord Precision Products, operating out of Prescott, Arizona.. Earned Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1966, International Distinguished Shooters Badge in An accomplished target pistol marks man, he competed nationally and inter nationally, winning many national championships and setting records. He won the Gold Medal at the 1981 World Air Pistol Champion ship in Santa Domingo and many PanAm Gold Medals. He was named "Pistol Shooter of the Year" by the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1985.That year he won seven of the eight possible gold medals in his events at the PanAm Games. Don was a member of the U.S. International Shooting Team from 1979 until He competed on the U.S. Shooting Team at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif., and the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. He was very proud to represent the United States at those games. He was a Champion. now consists of a 600 yard high power range, a 200 yard public range, yard general purpose ranges, and a 50 yard pistol range. Again this is just one proposed use of the property, we will be working with the FS and G&F over the next few months to get the best use the site to encompass as many shooting disciplines as we can. Our plan is to suggest we replace one of the 100 yard bays, making it a 200 Yard/Meter range, and see if we can build several small general purpose bays on other parts of the property not currently being planned for. As I said we have a lot of work still left to do. We are still at least 2-3 years from breaking the ground at our new facility. There are several hoops both the club and G&F have to go through to secure our new range. I will be meeting with various entities to explain our plans. I will keep you posted on further developments. - - Mark Fricke 1 Hunter Safety Bay yard General Purpose Bay yard General Purpose Bay 4 30 point 200 yard Public Range 5 30 point 200/300/600 yard Public Range Racetrack Road VERY Preliminary Layout of Proposed New Range N Highway 169
