1 TROPHY TIMES V X X X San Diego Chapter Price $3.50 Safari Club International ol. II, No. 3, July 2011 CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE AND PRESERVATION OF THE HUNTER A Visual Journey with John Banovich Journey from the field, to the Montana studio where artistic ideas of world-renowned wildlife artist & conservationist, John Banovich are conceived, born, nurtured and given life. Along the way, Banovich will share the underlying inspiration behind his canvas, and his philosophies on the plight of wildlife and wild places. Today' s mega fauna (especially large carnivores) are disappearing at an unprecedented rate - primarily because local people cannot bear the cost of living with them. Banovich will take us on an indepth exploration into the threats, the challenges and possible solutions for protecting large conservation landscapes. See Introducing John Banovich on page 12. 3 President s Message By Barbara DeGraw Three times each year the SCI Board of Directors meets to conduct important SCI National business. It is always my honor to represent the San Diego Chapter SCI as the Chapter is well respected across the country. We are known to always have a top-notch Auction, support the American Wilderness Leadership School in Wyoming and our members are involved supporters of SCI/PAC. The Board met in early May in Washington DC. One of the highlights of this meeting is our day on Capitol Hill where appointments are made for us with our local representatives. Ginger Byrum, attending in her position as Director-at-Large, and I visited the congressional offices of Susan Davis, Darrell Issa, and Brian Bilbray. Congressman Duncan D. Hunter was a speaker at our luncheon along with 20 legislators from around the country. Other Chapter members attending the meeting were Mike Rogers, past SCI President and Mike Rogers, Jr. who always has a presence at these meetings with his responsibilities with video and sound for the gatherings. An in-depth report from our national Litigation staff reminds us of the many fronts where SCI fights for our rights as hunters. At present, we are represented in some 17 states on subjects such as delisting of the wolf, use of lead ammunition, and inclusion of hunting on park lands. In May, I set up a learning booth at the Trailblazer Event at the Mataguay Scout Reservation attended by over 200 Scouts. With the contents of the SCIF Hands On Wildlife kit (HOW) the boys were introduced, for the most part for the first time, to pelts, skulls, tracks, and scat of the coyote, beaver, raccoon, and hare. experience to Bishop to introduce that area to this fine youth program. Make reservations for you and your friends for our Annual Meeting featuring the renowned wildlife artist John Banovich which will be held July 20 at the Bali Hai! Don t miss this chance to experience a truly outstanding presentation on the important part hunting plays in the conservation of our earth s wildlife. We will also be welcoming our in-coming Chapter Board Members who will be bringing some exciting events and programs to us in See you there! The Hunter Safety class will be held on August 6 and 7. For additional information and to register for the class, call Mike Barry Welcome to New Chapter Members! Chapter members are the heart and soul of our Chapter and we are happy to welcome the following new members: Brad Boswell Jane Meiners Bryan Palle John Reddan Ed Schwenck Ed Zieralski Doug Streed attended with information and signup instructions for next year s San Diego Junior Pheasant Hunt. 4 Dall Sheep and Mountain Caribou By Josh Zigman I booked a Dall sheep hunt in the Northwest Territories of Canada with Clay Lancaster of Nahanni Butte Outfitters at the 2009 Reno SCI Convention. The primary species was Dall sheep and secondary was mountain caribou. I hunted the Dall sheep first and the mountain caribou second. I arrived in camp on Wednesday, at about 6 P.M. After sighting in my rifle we went back to the cabin to go over my gear situation. Although I had brought everything on the outfitter s packing list there was a weight limitation of 50 pounds for the helicopter ride I didn t know about. My guide basically culled most of my gear including my woolies, gloves, Under Armor and toe warmers (I guess they had hot weather all season and were expecting more of the same). We were in the helicopter by 7:30 pm and dropped off at about 7000 feet on a mountain peak about a 1.5 hour ride. We set up the tent and went to bed and within a couple hours it started raining. When we woke up the next morning there was two feet of snow on top of the mountains and around the tent. We were held hostage in this little tent for two days until it stopped. I had no winter clothes or gloves because the guide was dead sure that the weather would be hot (that s the last time I take a guide s advice on the weather); on the bright side, if it wasn t for the snow we would not have had any drinking water because we were in such a hurry to fly out we forgot to fill up our water bag and bottles. Once it stopped snowing we hiked all day trying to find the rams. We finally found them on the next mountain range late Saturday night, Sunday morning we set out for them. The stalk took all day mainly because the rams had a pretty good vantage point over us and we really had to move with extreme caution so they wouldn t bust us coming up their mountain. When we got to the sheep he was bedded down 360 yards away from me. I set up on my back pack and put him to bed with my Sako Finlight.270 using 130 grain Barnes Triple shock bullets. After skinning and quartering the ram, we packed our gear and meat to start back to camp. I slung one hind quarter over my left shoulder and grabbed the other hind quarter with my right hand and headed down the mountain. After a while my right arm got tired of lugging the meat down so I tried to curl the sack of meat over my right shoulder. When I did that I felt my bicep rip at my elbow. The pain was excruciating for a few minutes and then I felt alright except I couldn t lift anything with my right arm. When I got home I found out that I had 4
5 skin, and quarter and pack him up or we were going to have to spend the night in the willow brush with a caribou carcass and a grizzly bear in the very near vicinity needless to say we got the job done in time. I know the last second kill is not that uncommon, in fact it seems to work out that way more often than not, but the thrill of beating the dead line always takes the thrill of the hunt to a higher level. completely torn the bicep off my elbow and had to have surgery to reattach it. I shot that ram on the fourth day so I kept hunting another 6 days with no right bicep! The next day we moved camp to a lower elevation for mountain caribou. That s when the weather started turning ugly. It rained for 5 straight days with a constant 45 MPH cold north wind this was plain miserable. Even the caribou took cover. All we saw were a handful of cows and a couple little bulls. Finally, on the last day, Saturday, , the sun came out and a gentle warm south wind blew. We went on a long hike down the mountain and down an active creek, dodging a grizzly bear and sneaking up on a nice bull moose feeding in a pond. Unfortunately we were not seeing any caribou. At that point I was pretty sure the caribou wasn t in the cards. The guide had even called the main lodge to give them our GPS coordinates and the E.T.A. for our pick up was in a couple hours. Despite my guide s lack of judgment on the gear selection (and believe me he suffered more than I as he packed even lighter) I had a tremendous time. His level of hunting experience and positive attitude made up for the gear screw up especially when the weather was bad and the morale was low. He was cool headed and could basically handle any mountain situation. He even dutifully glassed the windward side of the mountain long after I had left for the comfort of the leeward side. I would highly recommend the Lancaster Family Hunts and Nahanni Butte Outfitters; in fact I m going to book a lynx hunt and a moose/goat combo with them for 2012 and For information on Nahanni Butte Outfitters call Clay or Jim Lancaster at and Website: Incredibly, after about another hour of glassing, we spotted a nice bull caribou in the willows about a half mile away. We took off after the caribou, put a stalk on him and put him down right as the helicopter was over head looking for a place to land to pack us back out to the main lodge. We had exactly an hour and a half to take pictures, 5
6 By Josh Zigman Last November 2010, I had no hunts booked and was planning on staying home for some local bird hunting when I got a call from my good friend, Nick Frederick at Ameri-Cana Expeditions located in Edmonton, Alberta. Nick had a cancellation on a mule deer/white tail combo right in the heart of the rut and made me a pretty good deal to come up to his lodge in Coronation, Alberta. Well, I was agreeable but l needed a hall pass from my wife bless her heart a thousand times she said ok again! Alberta Mule Deer Hunt I was a little worried because the year before I had a successful but challenging hunt up there because the temperature was around 60 degrees, no snow and lots of wind not good for a deer rut hunt for either species proved to be the exact opposite. Daytime temperatures were averaging 10 degrees below zero, tons of snow and not much wind perfect! While most of their deer hunts are conducted ten minutes from the lodge, my zone was in a unit near Stettler, Alberta, about an hour and a half drive from the lodge in Coronation. We were hunting on private farm land and Hutterite Community Land. The terrain was wide open farm land with patches of buck brush, small timber stands, and wide open prairies with coolies. My guide s name was Roger Ell and this was the second time I had hunted with him. It did not take long before we started spotting bucks and does all over the place but no shooters. The following morning Roger spotted a shooter muley buck with a wide 4 x 4 rack. Unfortunately I could not get on him fast enough and he quickly got out of range. We spent another four hours trying to find this buck before we decided to give it a rest and go into town for a lunch break. On the way into town I spotted another nice buck off the road guarding two does. Roger slammed on the brakes and pulled over so we could size him up. He was a mature 4 x 4 with thick mains, deep forks curling in, and nice brow tines. Even better he was 100 yards off the road on friendly property and the buck was totally oblivious to us what more could you ask for? That buck was begging for me to squeeze the trigger; however, in my mind he was a little narrow as the rack was inside the ears. Roger told me that he would score at least 180 and I should reconsider. For some reason I just didn t feel like taking that buck so to Roger s dismay we fired the truck up and went to eat lunch. We sat down at a local burger joint and he scarcely said two words to me for about an hour. After lunch we decided to go back to that last buck just to see if he was still there. Not only was he still there but he was about 50 yards off the road and still policing his does. I got out of the truck and had him scoped up for at least ten minutes but I just couldn t burn my tag on him. He finally just walked off. Now, Roger was bewildered and kind of tweaked that I didn t take that buck. He told me it was my decision but it s not often he leaves 180 class bucks in the field. I was definitely having second thoughts myself. I ve made the mistake before of passing up great opportunities only to wind up settling for less or nothing at all I m sure many hunters know that feeling. We spent the rest of the day looking for more action and contemplating my decision to keep hunting. With about one hour of daylight left we spotted another nice buck out on a field about 1000 yards away. The buck busted us as soon as we stopped to 6
7 glass him and broke out on a dead run to put even more distance between us. Fortunately he ran into a gully where he thought he was safe and held tight. We got about 350 yards away from him without him seeing us. After glassing for a couple minutes Roger blurted out that this was same buck from this morning and I better not press my luck any further! I didn t need a lecture and got out and took him without any hesitation. Now the fun part began not. We had to go get him out of the gulley. It was already getting dark, the temp had sunk well below zero, and there was no way to get the truck in there. Good thing I spent the last 2 months lifting weights and getting into shape but needless to say Rodger did most of the work. I had just had my right bicep surgically reattached in September from my injury while Dall sheep hunting in August. I grabbed an antler with my left arm but we both knew who was doing the heavy dragging. Looking back my buck probably didn t score as high as the buck I passed up, but I was happier than heck to get a second chance at the first buck which is the one I really wanted. We got back to the lodge late, hungry and tired but in very high spirits. After hanging the carcass in the skinning shed we went in to join the other hunters and get cleaned up for supper. Nick s chef, Tim, had an excellent supper cooked up for us as well as a celebratory clear adult beverage. Ameri-Cana Expeditions was referred to me back in the 90s by the late Dick Tuthill, who was a S.D. Chapter member and an accomplished big game hunter. I started hunting with Ameri-Cana in 2004 and have gone back for 2 moose, elk, caribou, 2 geese/duck hunts, Polar Bear/Musk Ox and 2 deer hunts. This is a family-run operation and they have treated me well. I give them very high marks on accommodations, travel arrangements, service, attitude, guide selection, outfitter representation and game quality. They go a long way to cultivate relationships and camaraderie which makes for great hunting experiences not just good hunting experiences. On all occasions their hunts have met or exceeded my expectations. I strongly recommend you call Nick or Dan for most North American game hunting including geese and duck in Alberta s prairies, Canada s Arctic game including Walrus, Polar Bear and Musk Ox, Russian Brown Bear in the Kamchatka Peninsula, African Safaris in Tanzania and Namibia, international sheep hunting for Marco Polo in Tajikistan and new opportunities for multiple species of sheep in Iran which they have recently sent Jim Shockey to film. Jim will be airing a new Outdoor Channel TV episode of this soon. The next two days we spent looking for white tail deer. At first there wasn t much to look at but I managed to kill a couple of coyotes to keep things interesting. Finally on the fifth day we found a decent buck in a timber stand interested in a bunch of does. It s quite unbelievable but this buck knew we were coming yet he refused to leave his harem if this was the week before I m sure he would have run off. It was fortunate that I tagged out that day because the temperature dropped to about 37 degrees below zero. Let me tell you that whether you measure it in Celsius or Fahrenheit, -37 degrees is very cold! 7

When not in Africa following the tracks of lions or in the mountains of North America searching for the next wildlife encounter, he can be found painting in his studios in Livingston, Montana, and Carnation, Washington, where he lives with his wife, Amy and daughter, Siana. 12
13 By Gerry Faust, Legislative Chair This last year we had a number of victories in California and National legislation for hunters and gun owners but as usual we also had some significant challenges. California Democrats continue to control both houses of the State Legislature, plus they gained control of the Governor s Office and other statewide offices as well. Democrats now have almost total control over state government. The California State Legislature is expected to continue to be generally unfavorable to the best interests of hunters. Legislative Update Our Chapters website, now features a Legislative Update and a Political Action section. Those sections will have an overview of this year s upcoming legislation, suggested positions and links, and will allow you to find contact information that will help you get your message to the key people influencing legislation. This is going to be another important year for us all. Visit the website and help us help you continue the hunting and shooting traditions that we all cherish. Governor Jerry Brown, based on his past performance and positions, is expected to be better for hunters than either his predecessor or the Legislature. But this still leaves us in a precarious position and we will need to be on guard and active this year if we want a successful year in the legislative arena. There are far too many people out there who want to infringe on or take away our right to hunt, fish and own firearms. With this in mind, San Diego SCI has decided to create a regular announcement area on our website to keep you informed of what is happening in our state and at the national level and to help you take positive action where you feel it is needed. Big Bore Boys Shoot Sunday, July 31, to 5 PM Project 2000 Gun Range 2082 Willow Glen Drive El Cajon, CA The shooting will be at running boar with cal. 375 or less and the charging buffalo with cal. 375 and up rifles. 14 Wildlife Conservation Education in the Imperial Valley Most members are familiar with the Water for Desert Wildlife projects conducted by Desert Wildlife Unlimited (DWU) and its founder Leon Lesicka. Not so well known are Leon s considerable efforts to clean up the New River and to create and restore large wetland areas in the Imperial Valley. In 2002 Leon s daughter, Kathy Abubo, and a number of other 6th grade teachers in the Imperial School District initiated a program to create a garden at every school. Soon they were growing native plants to support the wetlands. In 2003 they began raising ducks and other native birds to release back into the wetland areas at the request of Ducks Unlimited. The duck project started out as a way to show students the importance of community involvement and support. It has turned out to be much more. The 6th graders learn how to work together to achieve a common goal, responsibility, the stages of a duck s life, a compassion and deeper understanding of all living things, and the importance of wildlife conservation and the role that hunters play in the conservation of wildlife worldwide. Generous donations from San Diego Chapter SCI, Desert Wildlife Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, Imperial County Fish and Game and most recently Chapter member Ingrid Poole, have 14
15 allowed this program to expand with the support of the school administration, teachers, maintenance staff, and parents. What began in 2002 with 4 teachers and 120 students has expanded, with the help of Cheryl Foster, to 23 teachers and over 750 students. An example of the scope of the project and the effort involved at one school is as follows: All 6th grades, 10 teachers, 300 students Special Day Class, 1 teacher, 19 students, 2 helpers 4 large-capacity incubators 2 small-capacity incubators for Special Day Class Duck pens built by students 300 eggs (purchased) Candling eggs to check fertility Approximately 150 ducklings will be raised and released from the 300 eggs This year the students started with 900 eggs and expect to release 450 ducklings as a result. As you can imagine, the students anxiously await their 6th grade year and their turn in this exciting endeavor. The Middle School graduates of the duck program often return to help and advise. Our hats are off to the teachers, students, parents, administrators, staff, and Board Members of the Imperial School District for creating and implementing a world-class conservation program that is producing a new generation of informed citizens to carry on the efforts to conserve wildlife and habitat. 15
