18 New York State Trappers Association 2017 Convention Honoree John Rockwood John Rockwood started selling trapping supplies very young, at around age 13. He got supplies and much knowledge from his mentor, E.J. Dailey, who lived in Ogdensburg at that time. John lived in Scriba NY, and he turned part of his parent s barn into a fur shed/trapping supply house. He continued and grew as a well-known fur buyer/trapping supply dealer well up into the 1980's. He called his business Rockwood Trapper Supply. Trappers came from miles away just to do business with Rockwood Trapper Supply. (We're not sure, but we think he offered free donuts! :-) He had his own line of lures also and has sold them off and on over the years. In the early 80's, the fur market crashed, and John went out of that business for many years. Fortunately, he had also started a firewood / logging business called Rockwood Logging Company. He worked out that same area originally, and then later moved the logging business to Maple View. The logging business was his main source of income for many years. As a side note, John was in a major car accident in the 90's, and it broke both of his legs, and he had many injuries which then took several months in recovery time. He had men running the logging business for him. During the main years of his logging business, it didn't leave him much time for the sport of trapping, so he hung up his traps for a few years, but always wanted to get back in it.

19 He always loved trapping, even though the trap supply business ended for a time. He trapped in several states, including Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee. He had some trapping partners, and his favorite animals to trap were (and probably still are) otters, bobcats, and fisher. He lived in Oswego County all this time, and when the Oswego County Trapping Association formed, back in the early 70's, he joined and became involved with many area trappers. The yearly rendezvous at Camp Zerbe began sometime in the 90's, and John was a very active member of the association and helping with these events. He became the Oswego County Rep to the New York State Trapping Association and filled that role well. When he did start trapping again, approximately years ago, he also started getting active in the NY State Trappers Association and eventually serving as President and was also a member of the JTI Committee to present. He's worked tirelessly for trappers in Albany at the government offices, and his heart has always been with trappers, for trappers, and for the animals he traps. John also got involved with the online trapping forums, selling traps, offering advice to young trappers, then from there did lots of demos at conventions, worked at kids trapping camps, gave away traps and lures to kids, and just has always worked tirelessly for trapping related causes. He has attended as many events as he has been able to for many years. Several years ago he started working part time for the USDA, trapping out of Fort Drum often, and many other places. He's been up in planes and driving all over NY state working on projects. He currently works full time for the USDA, but still finds time to set traps. NYSTA wants to thank John for the many years of selfless service, as he always thinks of others before himself. He works for trappers early mornings, late evenings, and any time he can in between. Trapping in NY State has benefitted greatly from his work, and probably will for many years to come. Submitted by Jim Carmody & Laurie Woolson

21 New York State Trappers Association 2017 Convention Booklet Honoree Al West My fellow friends and trappers I have been asked to write a bit about the 2017 Convention Booklet Honoree, Al West, who I met in 1981 at the Little Valley Sportsman Show. We immediately became friends and I invited him down to Steuben County to hunt deer with me. Al was amazed at the amount of deer he saw and I quickly learned he was an outstanding Deer Hunter. Al is an excellent shot and I sure wouldn't want him shooting at me. Al has taken a deer every single year over our 35 plus years of friendship. Al, his lovely wife Cheryl, and his family quickly became my second family; a feeling that has not changed to this day. Al has showed me so much about the Adirondacks from Ice Fishing adventures on Lake George to trapping the Upper and Lower Lakes area of St. Lawrence County alongside our mutual friend and former NYSTA Treasurer, Pete Bartholomew. Al has served in many capacities for NYSTA. He is a past President of the NYSTA and currently remains active on the Board of Directors. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from his peers. Al served as Chairman of the JTI Committee for well over 20 years and still holds a seat on that important committee today. Al is a true gentleman with the integrity, knowledge, and temperament to serve effectively on this committee which works closely with the NYSDEC Furbearer Management Team. Another highlight of our friendship is when we were inducted into the NYS Outdoorsman Hall of Fame in Al was being recognized for his efforts in Trapping and was credited for the Trapper Education Course before it was mandatory. Al, like me, is not afraid of asking important questions at the Board of Directors meetings for the betterment of the organization. Al and Cheryl have together given much of their lives in support of New York's Trappers and we should all be very thankful that they have. To sum this up Al, you are a true sportsman and Thank You, from all of us, for all your years of service on behalf of New York's Trappers. Your Friend, Bob Hughes
