You and your family will spend a day with Kenyan school children, have some one on one time with baby elephants, and be welcomed into local villages by Maasai warriors who will share traditional skills and ways of life. You ll explore the best national parks Kenya has to offer in the company of top guides who make your child s enjoyment and enrichment their top priority. Choose your favorite animal from the Big Five you ll see them all, plus many more in Amboseli National Park, Nakuru National Park, and the legendary Maasai Mara Game Reserve. See the shores of Lake Nakuru turned pink with flamingos, and the view of towering Kilimanjaro in Amboseli. Travel during July - October and you may just find yourself in the midst of the thundering herds who migrate across the Maasai Mara each season in search of greener pastures. 2 DAY 1 OLE SERENI HOTEL NAIROBI Ole Sereni Hotel Welcome to Kenya: Africa s original safari lands. After clearing customs at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, look for a Deeper Africa representative holding a sign with your name on it. Once you connect, he will page your driver who will transport you to the nearby Ole Sereni Hotel. Ole Sereni is located right next to Nairobi National Park. Your family can splash around in the rooftop deck pool or eat on the restaurant patio while simultaneously enjoying views of wildlife wandering near the park s border. Swimming Pool KENYA WITH KIDS

3 DAY 2 OLE SERENI HOTEL NAIROBI Today provides many opportunities for your family to experience close encounters with friendly, habituated animals. This morning you ll visit the Sheldrick Animal Orphanage where you will meet their resident baby elephants. You ll have a front row seat as the young elephants are fed by their nurturing keepers, with plenty of opportunities to interact with them. You ll learn from the keepers what s involved in rehabilitating young elephant orphans, many of whom have found themselves at the orphanage after their mothers were killed by poachers. It s an excellent opportunity to learn more about vital conservation efforts in Kenya. Enjoy lunch at Tamambo Restaurant before heading to the nearby Giraffe Center. At the center, you can go to the top of a raised platform that will allow you to be at eye level with several gentle giants who stop in to say hello. While there, you can grab some pellets, hold out your hand, and feed lunch to a hungry giraffe. Swimming Pool Conclude the day with a trip to Kazuri Beads for a chance to learn more about how Kazuri began as a tiny workshop experimenting in making handmade beads. It has grown large enough to have its own factory making beautiful handmade jewelry and pottery. 4 DAY 3 AMBOSELI SERENA SAFARI LODGE AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK Serena Hotels Today you ll be driving south into safari country and wildlife viewing through Amboseli National Park. This will be your first opportunity to view animals out in their wild habitats. As you drive, your guide will begin teaching everyone about animal identification, tracking, and spotting. Your Land Cruiser is equipped with a set of reference books so that when you identify a new animal, information and pictures are at your fingertips to supplement your guide s insights. We ll also stock the cool box with water and your favorite sodas. Your Land Cruiser has a full set of maps. During daily orientations your guide will use the maps to bring geography alive by showing you where you re going and where you ve been. Amboseli is famous for elephants. The many elephants in the park have been watched over by the researchers at the Amboseli Elephant Research Project for over 40 years. The researchers at the project have given each elephant a name and mapped out its family tree. You will see herds of elephants interacting and gain up close contacts with the matriarchs, the babies, teenagers, and bulls as you learn how they relate to one another. From time to time you can spot older elephants in the herds with very large tusks. The protection provided to these animals in Amboseli allows many generations to thrive. KENYA WITH KIDS

5 DAY 4 AMBOSELI SERENA SAFARI LODGE AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK Most of Amboseli is open savanna country and that means good visibility for wildlife viewing. In particular, the waters of the Enkongo Narok swamp and the acacia woodlands attract thirsty animals from across the area. There are year round hippos in the swamp area and many giraffe near the acacia woodlands. The water in the swamps is replenished underground from the snows of Kilimanjaro, and the area is always a green spot within Amboseli. Once you enter the park, the stunning views of Africa s highest peak are hard to ignore. You ll always see local people from the Maasai tribe in and about the park. The Amboseli Serena employs Maasai from the surrounding area. Should you choose, you can embark on a nature walk lead by a local Maasai guide. 6 DAY 5 OLE SERENI HOTEL NAIROBI BEADS for Education Depart Amboseli for a special excursion in the rural town of Isinya. Isinya is home to the Beads for Education program, an international nonprofit which supports female students in the area through the production and sale of intricately beaded Maasai jewelery and crafts. Beads for Education was founded with the objective of improving the status of women in Kenya through girls education and women s business development. In places like Isinya, girls have been traditionally discouraged from pursuing education past the most basic level. By empowering local Maasai women to create beaded items for sale, they are helping to provide independence for adult women while also raising funds for their female children s school fees. The program also attracts international donors who can sponsor students, and provides programs such as teacher training and female literacy development. 7 DAY 6 LION HILL LODGE LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK This morning you ll drive north to Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru is world famous for its stunning flocks of lesser flamingo, which literally turn its shores pink. Up to four million flamingos roam the Rift Valley lakes in great flocks throughout the year, searching for the best feeding and bathing conditions. Each day, a substantial number of these flamingos settle on Lake Nakuru producing cacophony of squawking. Nakuru s bird life is rich with an additional 400 species including white pelicans. It is a beacon for leading ornithologists, scientists, and wildlife filmmakers. It is easily accessible, lying immediately south of Nakuru Township. Nakuru is a small, beautiful park with ecosystems that includes an acacia forest, woodlands, and the famous soda lake for which the park is named. Swimming Pool You ll have lunch at Lion Hill Lodge with the afternoon for wildlife viewing in Nakuru National Park. Lion Hill Lodge has stunning views of the lake itself and you ll potentially be able to spot local wildlife wandering its nearby shores from the comfort of the lodge. 8 DAY 7 LION HILL LODGE LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK Beverly Joubert Sarova Hotels You have a flexible, full day of wildlife viewing ahead in Nakuru. Wildlife viewing is relatively easy in Nakuru National Park, as spectacular animals seem to be everywhere. It s not uncommon to spot leopards lounging in trees and even Nakuru s lions sometimes sleep on the broad acacia branches. The springs in the northeastern corner of the lake provide pools for hippo. Numerous antelope roam on the shores, including the Defassa Waterbuck. The shoreline is also a good place to observe the Bohor s Reedbuck, which sleeps in the sedge grasses. Mischievous troops of olive baboon are also plentiful along with warthog, eland, hyena, dik dik, and colobus monkeys. Two endangered species have flourished in Nakuru thanks to careful protection from the Kenyan Wildlife Service. In 1987, only two black rhino remained following devastation of their numbers by poachers. In response, the wildlife service created a rhino sanctuary within the park and reintroduced breeding herds from nearby Laikipia. Thanks to these efforts, black and white rhino have been successfully reestablished in the park. Similarly in 1977, the Rothschild s giraffe was introduced to the park from their threatened home in western Kenya. Swimming Pool KENYA WITH KIDS

9 DAY 8 ENCOUNTER MARA CAMP MARA NABOISHO CONSERVANCY at Lion Hill Lodge. Today is an early start as you head off across the Rift Valley to the famous open plains of the Maasai Mara. This savanna ecosystem teems with vast numbers of wildlife including the herds of the annual wildebeest migration. On the drive, you ll be moving through areas where many local Maasai live. Note how the landscape changes to drier savanna grasslands and begin to note many herds of cattle tended by young herdsmen. You ll stop for a picnic lunch en-route. Arrive at Mara Encounters by evening. Mara Encounters offers you beautiful tented accommodations, delicious food, great local guiding, and introductions to the nearby Maasai village. There are a myriad of activities for the family within the private Naboisho Conservancy in which the camp is located. You can go wildlife viewing in the Mara, take walking safaris across the plains, embark on night game drives, and participate in cultural exchanges. You ll visit villages not as a tourist, but as a guest, with camp staff introducing you to their own family and friends. 10 DAY 9 ENCOUNTER MARA CAMP MARA NABOISHO CONSERVANCY African Jaime Bush Steffen Camps Lutz Explore the plethora of plains game and the cunning predators that hunt them as you wildlife view throughout the conservancy. This is the perfect place to see big cats. In fact, the Disney documentary African Cats was filmed in the Mara featuring a pride of young lions as well as a famous cheetah named Sita, and her cubs. Sita is just one of the many cheetahs who live on the Serengeti/Mara savannas. You ll have the opportunity to view many. Today you can craft the right safari day for your family with your camp guide. Just make sure you treat your family to a walking safari while you are at Mara Encounters. Everyone in the family will learn tracking and scat identification. It is patience that makes a walking safari successful. Your guide will use his extensive bush tracking experience to amazing effect. The camp staff will transport you to the bush strip for your flight back to Nairobi.
