1 Shu mata Camp Welcomes You Description The Camp is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in Maasai land, in an area known as South Amboseli. Large East African tents, in true Hemingway - style are lined on a hill which offers magnificent views in all directions. At the front of the camp, bush savannah melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa. The view is so clear that on a moonlit night, details of the glaciers may be visible. Seasonally, the surrounding savannah bush teems with wildlife - large herds of elephant, eland, zebra and wildebeest, Oryx as well as Grants and Thompson Gazelle. All tents are equipped with en-suite bathroom, toilet and shower with colorful decorations of Maasai Art; each tent has its own veranda with up-lifting views. Outside, under the great African sky the open fireplace adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance. Discover the wonderful stars in the sky after sunset and enjoy delicious food on a long table with all guests. Activity Arrival from Hatari Lodge, West Kilimanjaro Airstrip, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport. We recommend an arrival around noon or in the afternoon. We try to avoid night transfers. On arrival at the camp we enjoy a sundowner on top of the hill in front of Mt. Kilimanjaro to end our day.

Echo grew to possess all of these strengths and more in her remarkable life as matriarch of an elephant family. She died of natural causes at the age of sixty-five in May, Her family still mournes her loss, but thanks to her legacy of wisdom they were able to struggle with the worst drought ever recorded in Amboseli and faced challenges that were beyond anything they had experienced before. Even as they learn to live without her, Echo is their guide. This is her final gift to them. We follow the footsteps of the Amboseli elephants until we find them in the bush and observe their migration. This activity is always combined with the Amboseli Sinya Tour.

3 Maasai Boma Visit Description From our Shu mata Camp, we organise a visit to a Maasai boma. Boma is the traditional homestead of the maasai people, who are semi-nomadic. The women build the traditional huts, made of a wooden structure, into which a mix of clay and cow dung is plastered as walls, this is then covered with natural roofing materials such as straw. These huts give into weather conditions and have to be rebuilt every six years on average. The Maasai are mainly cattle herders, but don t usually eat meat on a daily basis. Instead, they drink milk in large quantities and occasionally supplement their diet with fresh blood obtained by making a small cut into the animal s throat without killing it. Activity (depending on time of day) An interesting excursion awaits you to a Maasai boma in the Sinya flat. Here you will get a very good insight into the daily life and tradition of the Maasai. Later in the afternoon you will enjoy a wonderful sundowner at a very nice place in the middle of the Maasai steppe. Dinner and overnight will be at the camp.

4 Description Water is more precious than diamonds in an area as dry and arid as the Sinya Steppe. The Maasai living in this area are constantly threatened by drought and often have to carry water from distances of many kilometers. Most of the Maasai living in this steppe in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro do not have permanent access to drinking water, it is often difficult, sometimes even impossible, to find water for livestock or domestic use. Every day, Maasai women and girls have the daunting task of locating and transporting water to their homes and villages. Maasai Naturalist Walk The Maasai have to return to being the guardian of nature. To us, the land came first, then came the animals, and in the end came man. Balance is the key word - balance with nature, but also a new balance for the Maasai people, between old and new. Let's protect the environment - man, land and beast. (Ole Molloimet -Maasai Elder) Activity (depending on time of day) On this tour the Maasai share with us their wide knowledge of herbs and medicines, and introduce us to their unique lifestyle and land, where they have been living for several centuries in spite of the long dry seasons. Experience and gain an insight into their daily lifestyle off the beaten track. In the late afternoon you will return to the camp, where a sundowner on the hill is waiting for you. Here you can enjoy beautiful views across the wide open savannah.

But when you get the chance to do a night game drive, you should take it, because at night different animals are on their way through the bush. Activity After a sundowner on the plains at Shu'mata you will take a night game drive by jeep. You get the possibility to see wild animals and take amazing pictures at close range. Return to the camp for late dinner and enjoy a relaxing glass of wine of your choice.

8 The African Embassy's Kilimanjaro For All Hiking the Shira Plateau Description Activity: We start at our Shu'mata Camp with an open topped vehicle and drive scenicely for about 2,5 hours up to 3,400m onto the Shira Plateau. We pass different climate and vegetation zones. We leave the wide open steppe and enter flowering green highlands at the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park and finally reach alpine landscapes. Our destination is the Shira Plateau at 4000m. Once the cloud curtain opens, a fascinating view of the nearby Kibo Peak of Kilimanjaro is staged. We hike the Shira Day Trail for 3 hours through heath and moor with especially large senecios (up to 10 meters high). Elands can often be seen on the plateau, and you may see signs of buffaloes, leopards and other animals. En route we enjoy a lunch picnic while looking over the plains of Shira and Africa's highest mountain. We return for coffee and cake at a dutch farm which also supplies all vegetables for HatariLodge and Shu'mata Camp.
