1 Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division - Technical Document Summary List of State Wildlife/Game Areas of the Michigan DNR Wildlife Division - Wildlife Division (WLD) Lands table (a.k.a. list of "WLD-Lands") File revised 2016 June 15 (revised list data content 2016 April 08, then revised format of document 2016 June 15, by DNR-Wildlife_Division (M.Strong)) The purpose of this document is to communicate summaries of land areas of particular interest to the DNR Wildlife Division (WLD) within Michigan. This is a living document, subject to change as needed. Previous versions of this document had three tables: a summary count by type, an alphabetical list of area names, and an alphabetical list of areas by type. However, repeated questions or requests showed a need to convert from using a standard document to a spreadsheet with collumns, to help those reading or using this information. DNR Wildlife Division lands are actually a group of several sub-groups. The first division of the lands is by "Dedicated" to WLD and dedicated/admininstered by other DNR- Division or other agency. These are described as: * Dedicated types to the DNR Wildlife Division (administration) directly, where Dedication is a formal process which approves administering Division, intended purpose for an area, and other details. The list of these areas is not expected to change much or often, as the dedication process is involved and sets-up long term interests for conservation and management of wildlife. These specific "types" include: State Wildlife Areas (SWA); State Game Areas (SGA); State Fish and Wildlife Area (SFWA); and State Wildlife Research Areas (SWRA). * dedicated -to-other types to the DNR Wildlife Division (management or co-management but not lead on administration) area as a group called State Wildlife Management Areas, or areas which are WLD-interest areas but are formally dedicated or administered by another DNR Division or agency; however the DNR Wildlife Division has an interest, is involved with management/ co-management, funding some portion of the area now or in the past, etc. The list of these areas may change as wildlife involvement changes in some of these areas over time - i.e. recent additions of Grouse Enhanced Management System (GEMS) areas, or new Federal-Aid supported floodings, etc. WLD-Lands summary: area type count subcount acres All wildlife/game areas: 194 areas = total acres (approx.) of 614,059 Those Dedicated to DNR WLD as lead admininstration and manager, for the area (with names shown in this same grey shade, below): 111 areas = total acres (approx.) of 419,678 State Game Area SGA 95 areas for total acres (approx.) of 311,590 State Wildlife Area SWA 12 areas for total acres (approx.) of 75,122 State Fish and Wildlife Area SFWA 1 areas for total acres (approx.) of 360 State Wildlife Research Area SWRA 3 areas for total acres (approx.) of 32,576 Those dedicated to another DNR Division or Agency, who are a cooperator with WLD on the area: 83 areas = total acres (approx.) of 194,381 Conceptually these are areas of the State where there's a particular focus for wildlife management (including waterfowl and grouse), special project, or otherwise - a "State " or SWMA: Areas co-managed with FRD or focus areas in State Forest areas; SWMAs 66 areas for total acres (approx.) of 136,980 Areas co-managed with PRD or focus areas of Wildlife Units in State Parks or State Rec. Areas 4 areas for total acres (approx.) of 11,643 Areas for enhanced grouse management = GEMSs - 6 areas for total acres (approx.) of 26,944 functionally are SWMAs and most are on DNR land, but one GEMS is on Federal Land as cooperator 1 areas for total acres (approx.) of 9,772 Areas cooperatively with Federal USFWS, or WPAs 5 areas for total acres (approx.) of 631 Area cooperatively with a county (Muskegon County) 1 areas for total acres (approx.) of 8,411
