1 Winter 2013 Inside this Issue: 1 News From the R.D 2 Current Events 3 What s Happening 4 Drummer Fund Projects Western Great Lakes Region Regional News The Fall/Winter/ Season What a fall! Reports from around the region showed woodcock numbers to be rebounding from historical low numbers and hunters were reporting great results across the territory. Reports on grouse numbers for the region were below expected levels, in some areas, but higher in others. Always a puzzle. One hunter related a story to me about two consecutive weekends. The first weekend they hunted, they moved 93 grouse and shot 7, the following weekend in the same cover, they moved 3 grouse. What changed? The leaves all came off in one week, and the grouse moved to different cover types. That s what makes them such a sporting bird to hunt. I had a number of hunters reporting limits of grouse during the mid to late October time frame. Late season reports have been scattered with central not having snow, and hunters there are having some results. Farther north until just recently there hasn t been any substantial snowfall which can make feeding easier for the birds, but if temperatures get below zero,
2 can affect survival of birds if snow roosting isn t available. The NGWH in Grand Rapids, MN happened Oct 11-12, and showed a significant increase in the woodcock harvest again, while grouse numbers were nearly the same as The first day, we had snow in the far eastern hunt areas that affected success rates. The next day the weather moderated, but snow the previous day chased the grouse into heavy cover and made shooting very tough. Overall the event was a huge success and generated significant income for habitat work in the region. Current Events in the Region February 12 T.
