1 Appendix Scouting Tracks Compiled for Each Day on which at Least One Boat was Actively Searching for Whales, 2002 The following appendix contains very rough figures generated from MapSource (the proprietary Garmin mapping software), more as examples of future analytical direction than as final products. The appendix is a late addition to the report, and in future reports (annual reports, final synthetic report) will be much cleaner. Useful features of presenting the data in this way include: A visual representation of day-to-day variability in the distance traveled (total, as well as the furthest distance from Cross island attained) while scouting for whales; A visual representation of the cooperation among boats of the same crew (as measured by the closeness of their tracks, and synchronous changes in their tracks); A visual representation of the cooperation among boats from different crews (as measured by the closeness of their tracks, and synchronous changes in their tracks); and A visual representation of whales spotted in relation to the day s track. The utility of the figures in their present format is somewhat limited, however, because MapSource does not allow for the labeling of tracks except as viewed with the MapSource software itself. Waypoint labels tend to be so large that they obscure track features and the locations of other waypoints. Thus, the figures in this appendix are unlabeled. Processing with another graphics program would allow for a more immediately useful display, but was not possible for this report. The MapSource files are supplied as an electronic appendix, but primarily as a matter of completeness rather than as a finished tool. Note that these day files are essentially simply combinations of the single boat/single day tracks that are also supplied as an electronic appendix. Not all tracks were collected for all days, and the included (and missing) tracks are noted for each day. The waypoints on the figures are represented with various symbols. The black boxes are whale sightings marked by the boat in question (or reported to the researcher in relation to the boat s track once they boat returned to Cross Island). White boxes represent whale sightings by other boats, reported to a second boat, which then marked the point. For the most part these are duplicate waypoints (whales already marked by some other boat), but are potentially interesting to discuss boat-to-boat communication and cooperation. Actual strikes are represented by fish symbols, and kill sites (or the beginning or tows) by flag symbols. Cross Island is marked with a house or cabin symbol. Other islands, oil industry facilities, and navigational aids are marked with black sun symbols.
