1 Overview This standard describes your role in stalking and culling deer. It relates to the work activities that you undertake to control deer populations using a firearm. This standard is designed to support those who control deer populations using firearms, either in an employed or recreational capacity. To meet this standard you will be able to: prepare for a stalk identify individual and groups of deer approach deer close enough to ensure a humane kill or effectively use a high seat shoot deer locate the shot deer and ensure the animal is dead For you to fully understand the content of the standard, and the activities it describes, it is important that you are able to understand the terms used within the standard. 2 Performance criteria You must be able to: 1. carry out work safely in line with health and safety requirements 2. identify the cull required 3. select firearm and ammunition to meet requirements of planned cull 4. prepare tools, equipment and firearm to a safe condition suitable for culling activities 5. zero firearm for accuracy 6. demonstrate accuracy in the use of the firearm from appropriate firing positions 7. select individual deer to meet cull requirements 8. stalk deer to a distance where a safe, effective, humane and hygienic shot can be taken, taking account characteristics of location 9. handle firearm safely and effectively according to industry codes of practice 10. shoot deer safely, humanely and hygienically according to the features of the location and legal requirements 11. observe reaction of deer to the shot to determine its condition 12. approach shot deer safely according to its presumed condition 13. locate and confirm condition of shot deer 14. dispatch wounded deer humanely 15. confirm the status of deer against cull requirements 16. clean and store firearms and ammunition after use in accordance with relevant legislation LANGa40 2

3 Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: 1. other relevant wildlife and environmental legislation that impacts on deer culling 2. the health and safety requirements associated with stalking and culling deer including the dangers associated with lone working 3. the reasons for culling deer as part of deer management 4. the legal restrictions controlling the use of firearms 5. the legal restrictions controlling storage, transport and carriage of firearms 6. the legal requirements and industry codes of practice for stalking and culling different deer species 7. deer species identification and classification for age, sex and condition 8. normal anatomy, physiology and behaviour of deer including signs that indicate ill health 9. common deer diseases including those which are notifiable 10. potential causes of environmental contamination that can impact on the quality of game meat including the factors that can affect human health after consumption 11. how the time of day and weather conditions can affect stalking and culling deer 12. how the characteristics of the location can affect stalking and culling deer 13. how to use habitat and terrain to assist the stalk 14. the different firearms which can be used on a cull 15. why it is important to zero rifles 16. the required range and bullet placement that will ensure a safe, humane and hygienic kill 17. methods of locating and approaching deer 18. how to select the individual deer to be culled 19. the use of high seats as an alternative form of stalking, including how to climb quietly and safely 20. how to make a safe shot on different terrain 21. how supports can be used to assist the accuracy of shooting 22. how to locate shot deer including the use of dogs 23. the reaction of deer to being shot in different parts of they and how to approach shot deer 24. signs which indicate strike 25. how to confirm the condition of a shot deer 26. methods used to humanely dispatch wounded deer LANGa40 3
