Chairman s letter Dear Members, The 8 th Veterans Winton Cup held in Lilleshall was a very enjoyable event. A weekend of exciting and closely fought fencing with South West winning what was this time a very narrow victory, down to the last match over South East. An equal number of victories for both teams then meant that it was down to fights won with South West on 257 and South East on 246. Congratulations to South West on retaining the Winton Cup. Thanks to Event Manager, Marcia Stretch, for organising the weekend and to her team of helpers: John Crouch, DT, Janet and Peter Huggins, Armoury and John Mason, who couldn t be there, for the entries, dinner bookings and IT work. Thanks also to all who helped lay out the pistes and boxes on the Friday evening and those who were not fencing but refereed, in particular Carl Morris and Marilyn Wheelband. A very warm welcome to all new BVF members who were fencing at the Winton for the first time. It was a pleasure to meet you all and good as always to see so many familiar faces too. The dinner was a success with over 130 diners and a profit was made on the raffle of over 500. I hope those of you who were there enjoyed the guess who quiz! We were very pleased to welcome Betty Mills, wife of Frank. She attended the dinner and also presented the new Frank Mills Trophy to Graham Paul, the first winner. Three foilists all had 27 victories; Graham, Mike McKay and Gillian Worman with Graham winning on hits scored. Betty also presented the Winton Cup and medals to the South West team. It is very encouraging that Vets are taking part in Open competitions both in the UK and Europe and there have been some excellent results. I am delighted to welcome Katie Rhodes, British Fencing Events Manager, to the ET16 organising team. She will be working with us in the run up to and during the event. Katie has a huge amount of experience in event management and is already a great asset to our team. She has set up a Twitter account - and a Facebook page - both of which will used to publish news. Our thanks to British Fencing for allowing her the time to help us. Our new website is up and running - Richard lights up the St Ives sky It was heart warming to see fellow Vets at the memorial party that was held for Richard Bonehill at his home in St Ives, Cornwall. His wife, Lynne, and Richard s brothers Anthony and Michael hosted a party for his friends with the help of Truro Fencing Club and gave him a tremendous send off, which I am sure, he would have loved. Richard s ashes were blasted into the sky in three large rockets on what was a beautifully clear night, followed by a firework display, with his family and friends there to watch. Richard has been posthumously awarded a British Fencing Silver medal in the 2015 honours. SEPTEMBER

BVF is well represented in the Honours list. Other recipients are: Connie Adam and Stephen Domek - Award of Merit Anthony Klenczar - Bronze Medal Rob Kirby who regularly helps us with DT - Bronze Medal John Mason - Gold Medal. Congratulations and well deserved to all. Those of you who were at the Winton will have seen the proposed new GBR tracksuit design. The feedback was very positive and taking views into consideration, designer Anne Mills and supplier Ingrid Heskett have changed the design of the tracksuit trousers. I am very pleased to inform you that the final version can now be ordered. I am sure that you will agree that the new tracksuits will have a great impact in 2106 so make sure you order yours by December 1st. Full details including how to order can be found on pages 4-6. Thanks to Anne and Ingrid for their hard work in getting the design exactly right. I can t wait for mine to arrive! You can still buy one of the ET16 badges. Details are on page 11. There are just two numbers left for the 100 Club. There will be ten prizes of 100. If you would like one (or both) please Sue Church - mailto:sue.trysport@tiscali.co.uk Thanks to all of you who have sent in your vote on the FIE Veterans Council s proposal to change the name FIE Veterans to FIE SeniorPlus. The results will be published in the October newsletter. The Veterans World Championships are taking place from 20th - 25th October in Limoges, France. Good luck to all GBR fencers in the individual events and to our teams. 4 New BVF Tracksuit!! Designed by Anne Mills Supplied by Ingrid Heskett Please note: colours are an indication (variance on computer monitors) YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED... Q: How much will the new tracksuit cost? A: Price is VAT = inclusive ( P&P as required). Q: Can My name be printed on my new tracksuit? A: Yes, under the BVF logo at no extra charge. Q: Does the Tracksuit have zip pockets? A: Yes, both the jacket and trousers have zip pockets to keep your personal possessions as safe as possible. Q: Do the tracksuit trousers have long zips? A: Yes the trousers have zips up to the thighs, making removing them over shoes very easy, especially if you are no longer a contortionist!! Q: How do I know which size to order? A: Check the measurement chart and if in doubt, compare the measurements to a garment you own that you know fits you. SEPTEMBER

Q&A continued: Q: Can I have the GBR team emblem on my sleeve? A: Yes if you have ever been selected to represent Great Britain in a Veterans European Team Championships, World Championships or other selection International fencing event. (This does not include Open events.) If you are selected in the future, the team emblem can be retro fitted to your tracksuit at no extra charge (excluding P&P if logo is not applied onsite at an event). Q: How and when can I place/pay for my order? A: Orders must be placed and paid for by December 1st They will then be manufactured exclusively for BVF members and delivered by end January. Q: Will I be able to order a new tracksuit next year before ET16 in May? A: No. As the delivery time is 6-8 weeks, this would not guarantee that orders placed after team selection from the BVF Championships would arrive in time so the December order will be the only order to be completed before May next year. If you hope to compete at the European or World championships next year we would recommend that you place an order by Dec 1st so that you are guaranteed a timely delivery of your tracksuit. We envisage further orders being made at regular intervals, depending on demand. Q: Why do I need a new/another tracksuit? A: The new BVF GBR Tracksuit has been specially designed to help us create a strong visual team identity when British Veteran fencers are competing in international events. We want to make a strong statement as a team and be easily identifiable; not blend in or look similar to other countries. Whether a competitor or supporter, we want to promote our unity and presence as GBR fencers and we believe that this new image will do just that! At this stage of your life, how often do your friends and family ask What do you want for Christmas? Tell them you d love a new GBR fencing tracksuit as a Christmas gift or a contribution towards it, as you ll really enjoy wearing the new GBR kit in 2016!! HOW TO PURCHASE: Please click on the following link and place your order online: Orders must be placed by December 1st 2015 and will be delivered towards the end of January All tracksuits will be made up to the size ordered and paid for. Don t miss your chance to order for 2016! SEPTEMBER

Foilists fight in Budapest Ahead of the forthcoming Vets World Championships, John Troiano, Richard Sage, Christiane Elsenbach and Paul Wedge thought entering a European Vets competition held in Budapest might be good preparation. We duly arrived at the sports hall which was in Hungary s equivalent of the Olympic Park. This had been built in the Soviet era and had a rather dilapidated feel about the whole place. Nevertheless after spending 20 minutes in the taxi trying to find the venue we duly arrived. The actual fencing Salle had, to be fair, been renovated and was used by the Hungarian National team so had proper metallic pistes and equipment. Whilst there were age and weapon categories it was clear the main body of fencers were Hungarian with a few lady fencers from Romania. There were two round of pools with the men's age category fencing with the category which was then seeded. After the two rounds ofo pools John was seeded number 1, Paul 2, and Richard 7th. In the women s category Christiane was seeded 4th. Both John and Paul had a bye in the first round. Richard fought Andreas Meszaros and despite trailing 6-4 at the first break went on to soundly beat him John met Imre Szabo and outclassed him winning In the semi final John met Gabor Riesz who had beaten the useful Hungary Vets World team member Tamas Pentak. John thoroughly outclassed him winning On the other side of the draw Paul met Richard which was not the fencing we had come all this way to experience. A flourish of yellow cards and a red saw Paul penalised for use of back arm but sadly this was not enough for Richard losing 10-3 this time. In Paul s semi he met Csak Attila who had won the European title a few years back and was 4th in last years Worlds. Paul had beaten him 5-1 in the pools but was out fenced in the semis losing 10-5 In the final Csak had decided not to attack John and the president called passivity thereby moving to the next 3 minute period. A flourish of moves saw Csak go up 6-4 with only 10 seconds left. Miraculously and with some brilliant attacking moves John levelled the score 6-6 with 1 second left! Cask had priority but John decided to back off and sadly got hit with a beautifully executed attack. Final results were: John and Paul on the Podium Photo courtesy of Richard Sage 1st Csak Attila, 2nd John Triano 3rd Paul Wedge =3rd Gabor Riesz 5th Thomas Pentek 6th Tamas Sardi 7th Richard Sage 8th Karoly Szalay 9th Imre Szabo 10th Andras Meszaros 11th Csaba Babos In the women s foil Christianne came a very good 4 th. Overall we were pleased we went and would very much recommend seeing the lovely city of Budapest. Paul Wedge SEPTEMBER

Vets invade the Shropshire Open! The Shropshire Open was markedly down on numbers this year but was nevertheless well spiced with BVF members. There were around 29 weapon entries from the Vets, with only a couple of those being 2 weapon entries. On Saturday, in Men s Foil, Mike Mackay was the most successful, taking bronze, whilst Jon Stanbury reached the Last 16. Roman Seniuk had a disappointing day, ending up near the bottom. In the Women s event Jane Clayton and Katie Archer shared the Bronze medals. In Women s Sabre Rachel Lasance, who was 2nd last year, won this year s event. Yvonne Walls was 6th. Steve Potter s wife, Emma, who considers herself a trainee Vet she joins in January and who beat Rachel in the final last year, had to settle for bronze, losing out to Alice Moffatt, daughter of Carl, in the semi. Rachel beat Carl s other daughter in the other semi. So, even more Vets interest. In Men s sabre there were 9 of us Vets! In the first round, Steve Potter was in a poule of 5 winning 3 and losing 1. Carl Moffatt and I were in the same poule. I lost heavily to the eventual winner, Michael Bales and to Carl but won the others, Carl just losing the one fight. Julian Ghosh won all his fights. The second round brought Steve, Julian and myself together in the same poule. Being from the same club, Steve and I were up first. For once in a blue moon, it was my turn. I then won all the others except against Julian who whitewashed me. Steve also lost to him. Julian ended up 2nd seed, Stefan Leponis 6th, myself 7th and Steve 8th. Carl had dropped more fights and ended up 10th. In the first round of DE, through which all Vets down to Carl had a bye, Mike Compton fairly comfortably put out Mike Garrity, before losing to Julian in the Last 16. Paul Woodward had a scare in the Last 32 against my club-mate Richard Jones, who was in his first open. Paul was 8-1 up at the break but eventually got home A certain EvvanGemeran, believed to be a Vet under a pseudonym, had a disappointing day, ending up 17th. The Last 16 saw Steve through comfortably against the 9th seed, whilst I found myself up against Carl. Fearing the worst, since he has beaten me every time over the last couple of years and had earlier demolished me 5-1, I was surprised and pleased to build up an early lead and was comfortably ahead at the break. Carl staged something of a comeback then and the score ended up something like to me. My reward for overcoming that obstacle was another encounter with Julian. 8-0 up at the break he obviously was saving himself for the next round and I staged a dramatic comeback winning 4 hits in a row... to lose Stefan also went through to the Last 8, where he lost to local cadet Warwick Mitchell-Gough. 9 Final MS results (L16): Ghosh 3rd, Leponis 6th, Baron 7th Potter 8th Moffat 10th, Woodward 13th, Compton 14th. There were 9 Vets in the Men s Epée, most of them making the Last 16. Pete Eames took the Bronze, with John Chalmers 7th, Jon Stanbury 9th, Anton Pollard 10th, Andrew Brown 11th. Apologies that I can give little detail on anything except the Men s sabre I was too busy fencing my little socks off! Peter Baron Down memory lane with Henry Past Memories (Nostalgia) April 1988 Application for a Veterans Team for the Winton Cup was turned down. Wanted a logo - a design for a T-shirt.
