2 Message from the Organiser The 3 rd edition of our emagazine to celebrate another successful Gold Coast Open. A total of 320 competitors from all States of Australia participated at the 5 th Gold Coast Open. Two overseas countries; NZ (2 teams) and New Caledonia also participated. International, national and state champions from all over the country were there. The best of STA and TA were in attendance as everybody enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. Kane Belcastro and Deanna Kyriazopo both from NSW picked up the memorial awards for best sparring competitors while Britney Lorenzini from One TKD was the most outstanding Poomse competitor and was awarded the Wayne Brown Memorial trophy. I hope you enjoy this publication and I look forward to seeing you again next May for the 6th Gold Coast Open. Organised by Tan s Taekwondo the event has grown from a club championship to what it is today. The 1 st Tans invitational championship was held in 1992 at the Southport High School. Sparring, Poomse and Jump kick competition were held similar to the format we have today. At the 7 th Tans Open, New Zealand under the Taekwondo Union of New Zealand (TUNZ) entered for the first time. Various clubs and associations from NZ have returned every year since. In 2008, the event was expanded to 2 days as we could no longer fit the program into one. The Gold Coast Open In 2010, we announced a name change to represent the expansion of the competition. The Gold Coast Open, also promoted the region where it has made its home and reputation. How could we ever forget our friends from Ghana - Edem and Emmanuel who just turned up in Will they be here again? 2014 saw the expansion of electronics to all divisions except Yellow belt under 12 years. The Gold Coast Open has earnt a reputation as the best run competition in Australia. We pride ourselves on the small details which makes a big difference. 4 2014 Wrap Up Sparring Some 279 players participated in sparring over the 2 days. We actually had 351 entries in sparring, as players could enter 2 divisions, The Black belt divisions were full of champions. We extended the daedo electronic PSS (Protector Scoring System) to include everyone except under 12 yellow belts. Scoring complaints were significantly reduced. Separate cadet divisions of head kicks and non head kicks for Red and Blue belts were created. We also had separate Novice divisions for black belts 15 years and over. 5 Memorial Awards The Ken Mayfield Memorial Award This award was once again generously sponsored by Alan Powrie of Powrie & Co, Barristers and Solicitors. The award went to the best sparring (Kyorugi) spirit on the day. Alan the nephew of Ken Mayfield donated this award in memory of one of the pioneers of WTF Taekwondo in Queensland. The winner of this year s Ken Mayfield Memorial Award was Deanna Kyriazopo of Global Martial Arts NSW. Deanna won gold in the Junior 44kg Black belt division and fought in the Open - 46kg female division. She lost a close match to the current Oceania champion Andrea Kilday from NZ. The Mario Rejtano Memorial Award For the first time this years award went to a Junior. Kane Belcastro 11 years old from Hills District TKD won a total of 6 fights in a day. Not only did Kane show excellent skills, his manner was impeccable. A great role model and ambassador for Taekwondo. 5 t h G o l d C o a s t O p en Page 4

6 Poomse Numbers in poomse were up with 80 competitors competing on the Saturday. Poomse were split into WTF (official divisions) and Non WTF divisions. The Wayne Brown Memorial Trophy went to Britney Lorenzini for the best poomse spirit. 7 Jump kick 76 Players over the 2 days provided some great entertainment during the lunch period in the Jump kick competition. On Saturday we saw some great jumps of over 2 ½ meters in the Open division. Most of the competitors were on Sunday in the junior divisions. 5 t h G o l d C o a s t O p en Page 6

8 Daedo - How does it Work? Electronics are a must at today s Taekwondo competition. The peace of mind for the players, coaches, officials and spectators is well worth the investment in technology. The chest guard is embedded with sensors and efoot (socks) embedded with magnets. As the foot approaches the vest, the sensors anticipate the approaching magnet and register the impact and force of a blow, eliminating false readings from elbows or accidental contact. The chest guard, scores only kicks to the torso. Judges use wireless hand-held controllers to score head kicks, punches and extra point for turning type kicks. 9 Club Profile KOREAN MARTIAL ARTS / ACADEMY KMAA is used all over the world. It s a bit like Kim s Taekwondo. The first time I heard of KMAA was by Jodi Brown s father, the late Jim Simmons. Jim opened a Taekwondo school in Melbourne s Mordialloc area in the early 70 s. Master Glenn Parmley was one of the students of KMAA. We have 3 KMAA clubs at the Gold Coast Open this year. The following is a background on the 3 clubs. KMA Brisbane Instructor : David King Formerly Kings Taekwondo, David has changed his name to align with his Hapkido / BJJ affiliation with Fari Salievski of Sydney. Korean Martial Arts Academy - ACT Instructor: James Tallon. This is the first time James has entered his club into the Gold Coast Open. James operates a full time centre in Belconnen near the AIS. Korean Martial Arts Academy Instructor: Jet Lee Jet is currently the TQ state Coach who has just come back from the NZ Open. 10 Club Profile The College of Taekwondo Head Instructor : Guy Hubert State : QLD Guy Hubert started his training at the age of 10 at the Tigerlee TKD Academy. At 16 Guy won the Open black belt Fly weight division in only his second nationals. In 1987 Guy represented Australia at the 8th World Championships in Barcelona Spain. Guy has coached many Australian champions such as Olympians Peter Scanlon (1988) and Carlos Massimino (2000 & 2004). After a lengthy absence, Guy returned last year and has establish a number of Centres mainly in the Laidley area. 5 t h G o l d C o a s t O p en Page 9

11 Club Profile ASP Taekwondo Head Instructor : Tim Annett State QLD (Bundaburg) ASP founder Mario Rejtano established the Bundaberg headquarters in 1998, after relocating from Sydney. The Bundaberg club first opened in a room at the bus depot, and the first night saw 16 students become the first members. The club quickly became known for the high level of realistic skills being taught. In 2000, ASP Taekwondo was awarded QLD s Strongest Sparring Club After the passing of Mario on 1st May 2009 the club was left in the hands of one of Mario s oldest students, Tim Annett. Tim started training under Mario in 1998 when he first moved to Bundaberg. He was graded to 3rd Dan by Mario himself, and was graded to 4th Dan shortly after Mario passed away. ASP took on a new face, but many things remain the same, with Mario s ethics and style of teaching still being upheld. 5 t h G o l d C o a s t O p en Page 10
