4 ETIQUETTE There are some basics and etiquette s of Taekwondo I would like to share with you. I hope you find it beneficial, or it may be something you already know. But a little reminder to us and our students never hurts. I read a book a while back called 365 days Tao Daily Meditations by Deng Ming-dao. This particular section in the book deals with fundamentals and basics of life. It begins like this: After completion come new beginnings. Too fain strength, renew the root. In music, the fundamental tone is the lowest, or root, tone of a chord. Without the thorough grounding, there is no harmony. Followers of Tao emphasize cycles. This must include a sound understanding of what to do whenever a cycle comes to an end. New ones will begin. Some of them will be engendered by the old one; others may simply be in the background and will now come forward. If we are to properly shape these new movements and are to prevent unwanted cycles from beginning, we must take stock and renew our basics in the fundamentals. Everyone wants to be daring, creative, and original. Everyone wants to do things in new ways. But unless we return over and over again to basics, we will have no chance to truly soar. Do not forget the root. Without it we can never issue forth true power. This is so true with Taekwondo also. Everyone has a beginning, or Root and this beginning for us are with our instructors when you start to learn basics, basic kicking, form, one step, and free fighting, these are the physical parts. But let s not forget the mental parts, such as good manners, respect, and good concentration and a strong effort towards these parts and participation in the dojang. Some students think they may know more than their instructor. I have to ask myself, how can that be, and why would they think that? To me that s like a high school student saying they would know more than person who has a PhD. You will have some students who will try their own way. This is ok, but without your instructors permission you may not go very far without them, because they are your beginning, and your root. Grandmaster Park is my beginning, my root. Even though I may not agree with him on some thing, I am very careful how I speak to him, and carry myself around him, and other high ranking, and even students senior to me of the same rank. This leads me to another issue of students speaking to higher ranking instructor, and students. It goes back to the respect of others. Thirty six years ago there was no question of how to address higher ranking belt then. A white belt would learn not just from their instructor, but higher ranking color belts and black belts on how to bow to higher ranking belts, and learn how to say yes sir, no sir, or yes maim or no maim. It s like telling a story to a room of twenty five people and you ask them to tell the story individually and you would probably get different variations of the story or watered down version of it as you come closer to that twenty fifth person. I think the same thing happens in any organization that doesn t maintain its values. I think somewhere down the line it has gotten a little too casual for some students to address higher ranking belts. This is not good in my opinion. It s a reflection on you as an instructor and the strength and growth potential of your students, and your organization. For example, we all have parents, and an instructor, and when we travel, go to tournaments, and even in our own dojangs, you want your parents and instructors to be treated with respect. I don t think too many people want to be called out of their god given name, title, or job description. For example: Presidents, physicians, senators, ministers, or even officers in the military who become high ranking officer or anyone who becomes specialized in their in their particular field. The same applies in Taekwondo, it show respect to them and what they have accomplished in their lives, especially when you get these kind of people in a professional setting or gathering. Some students address Grandmaster Park as Sabumnin. This isn t true for everyone to address him this way; only his immediate students can do so. To call Grandmaster Park Mr. Park is improper too. Anyone who is not directly a student of Grandmaster Park would call him Grandmaster Park, or Kwan Jang Nim. Mr. is for those students who are 1 st to 3 rd dan. Your instructor would be your Sabumnim. Black belt titles go as follows: 8 th and 9 th dans are addressed as Grandmasters; 7 th dans are addressed as Junior Grandmasters; 6 th dans are addressed as Senior Masters; 5 th and 4 th dans are addressed as Masters; 3 rd, 2 nd, and 1 st dans are addressed as Mr. Mrs. Miss. Ms. No matter what age. Please don t misunderstand on these issues, right is right, and wrong is wrong, and being too casual around individuals creates other problems. The bottom line is the instructor has a big responsibility to lead by example and to teach you taekwondo ways, such as rules and etiquette in class just like any other part of class, over and over. I see a little breakdown in these areas and I thought it would be good to bring to everyone s attention. I hope I haven t offended anyone with my thoughts, but these are taekwondo rules and the taekwondo way. Sincerely and Very Respectfully, Head Instructor for Tae Park Taekwondo Central Studio Page 4 Senior Master James A. Rodgers

5 The Tenets of Taekwondo World Class Tae Kwon Do Courtesy (Ye Ui). To be thoughtful and considerate of others. Taekwondo practitioners (both students and instructors) should be polite, and show consideration for others. Integrity (Yom Chi). Integrity describes how you should interact with others. To be honest and good, earn respect and trust. Perseverance (In Nae). This basically stands for your internal drive. Challenges allow us to improve ourselves and should therefore not be avoided. Self control (Guk Ki). To have control of your body and mind. A Taekwondo student should practice controlling his actions and reactions. Indomitable spirit (Baekjool Boolgool). To have courage in the face of adversity. A Taekwondo student should never be dominated by, or have his spirit broken by another. January 8th Testing January testing at Tae Park Rodgers Institute at Central Studio in Jackson, Michigan went very well. Testing started at 2:00pm. Judges arrived early for conference with Grandmaster Park speaking on matters concerning taekwondo in the world and matters concerning Tae Park Taekwondo. Their were thirty seven students testing from Sr. Master Rodgers, Master Arthur, from Jackson, Michigan, Master Matt Klingbeil from Sheridan, Michigan, Master Bowhuis from Marshall, Michigan, and Master Roland Demorest from Greenville, Michigan. Other Masters present were Junior Grandmaster Richard Warren from Jackson, Michigan, Sr. Master Peter May also from Jackson, Sr. Master Constance Ensing from Comstock Park, Michigan, Master Robert Klingbeil from Sheridan, Michigan, and Master Scott Oring from Jackson, Mi., Grandmaster Park, Masters, students, and family members had dinner at Daryl s Downtown Restaurant where masters continued the conference meeting for about two hours more. As always there is something more to learn about taekwondo when masters come together and learn from each other. Thank you to Grandmaster Park and all the Masters who came to judge and Black belts who came and stood on the sides and helped to setup for testing and their students. Everyone is always welcome at Central Studio. Thank you all so much again. Sincerely and Respectfully Head Instructor for Tae Park Taekwondo Central Studio Senior Master James A.
