RC Combat Don Grissom reporting. RC Combat Day 3 Today s Events: Control Line A Speed B Speed Rat Race Precision Aerobatics Advanced Aerobatics Electric Profile Carrier Electric Class I Carrier Electric Class II Carrier.15 Carrier Skyray.35 Carrier Nostalgia Profile Carrier Nostalgia Class I Carrier Nostalgia Class II Carrier NCLRA Clown Race NASS Sport Jet NASS C Speed 75 MPH Speed Limit Combat Perkey RC Pylon RC Combat ONCE AGAIN the weather was hot, but that did not stop the action of RC Combat from happening. Since we were able to finish Open B on Day 1, we ended up with only five rounds of SSC. We started early in the morning with all 17 pilots still flying. One nice advantage of SSC is that you do not have as much damage as other forms of Combat. The first round of the day it looked like William Drumm III was going to have another bad day. He started the sixth round with a score of 100. He then followed it up with a 140 for round seven. I guess he was trying to give us some hope and then take it away. When he started round eight he got a total of seven cuts with in the first 45 seconds of Combat and then got a midair and kept his own streamer giving him a total round of 860. Brian Neff started strong with some good scores but just could not over take William. We ended up with all 17 pilots flying every round of Combat which really shows how durable the Combat planes have become. Bob Loescher had a good round late in the day and gave us a good look at how good the tread tape can grab the streamer and hold onto it. The tread tape has become a new way to grab the streamers this year instead of messing with tangle foot, which has always been a messy option. After the 10 rounds of Combat, William Drumm III once again took the top stop with a score of In second was Brian Neff followed by Tom Neff. After finishing up with SSC we gave out all the awards for the event and prizes that were purchase by the RC Combat Association (RCCA) as well as Lethal Weapon kits donated by Wayne Voyles at combatplanesrc.com. After we were done with the prizes, we had some Gnat RC Combat. Gnats are a great way to get new pilots into Combat with simple, easy-to-build, but durable planes to fly. Most of the parts can be purchased from a local hardware store and they can be assembled in just a few hours. We had five pilots for the Gnat Combat and gave flights to other pilots that were there. Now that we have SSC and Open B done, it is time for some Scale and Limited B Combat. We will be starting with 2948 Scale Combat in the morning. These planes are maximum 29 cu. in. engines and maximum wingspan of 48 inches. The planes will resemble planes that flew in WW II such as P-51 Mustangs, Zeros, and P-47 Thunderbolts. There is a rpm limit of 14,500 on the engines with a 10 x 4 propeller. After we finish Scale we will move into Limited B. Limited B uses a lot of the same planes as Open B but with a stock muffler running a 10 x 4 propeller at rpm. Hope to see you at the field as we finish combat this Thursday and Friday. NN Willam cutting the tail instead of a streamer.

RC Combat Don Grissom reporting. Taking a bite out of combat. Some Gnat planes in the air.

RC Pylon IT WAS a different type of racing with Electric Formula One in the air. All I can say is that it was a quiet day. With 57 pilots, there was a lot of heat racing and with some very tight heats. Some heats had four airplanes with identical air frames, so the pilots had to pay close attention to whose plane they were flying. At the end of the day, two pilots were on top of the leaderboard: Gary Schmidt and Dub Jett. They fought it out for 10 laps, exchanging the lead a couple of time, but Gary prevailed with the victory and became the second National Electric Formula One champion. After we were through, we all gathered for a family-style barbecue and shared the experiences of the day and few stories from the past. Great times were had by all. NN RC Pylon Day 3 Scott Causey reporting. The 2012 Nats Q-500 champion, Dennis O Brien, receiving the much-deserved first-place trophy and some cold water to cool off.

RC Pylon Scott Causey reporting. Meet the Competitor She is an elementary school teacher for Japanese language in her normal life, but out on the Pylon race course she s a tough competitor. Jessica Haxhi started flying RC at the age of 12 years old and racing Pylon at 14 with Quickies. At a contest in Westover Air Force Base in 1983, she met Jimmy Shinohara and things started to change. Formula One racing with a Jimmy-built Little Toni, she raced until 1994, with a best finish at the NMPRA Championship race taking third in Family and work got in the way, as life does sometimes, explaining the long hiatus from racing with some sport flying in between. I ask what brought her back, as she said the local area racing drew her in and there were no work conflicts for the Nats, so here she is, battling it out with the best of us, showing she still has the skills and competitive edge to win. NN

CL Navy Carrier Ted Kraver reporting. CL Navy Carrier Day 3 NAVY CARRIER Class I and Class II day was defined by heat as pace was slow; drink water the mantra of the day. The brief shower at day s end was welcomed. A high score by Burt Brodak of Arizona in Class I took first place and held it. Bill Bischoff of Dallas had a good score and complete flight. In Class II, Pete Mazur of Aurora, Illinois, flew a solid high, low, and landing with pretty good air to garner first place. Again Bill Bischoff had a solid second. At the Navy Carrier Society awards dinner that night, Bill s third in Profile Carrier at 319 combined with the two good scores in Class I and II made him the winner of the Annual Eugene Ely Award. Eugene started all this nonsense of flying on and off a Naval ship in The best two day cumulative performance at each Navy Carrier Nationals garners the engraved silver dish. There was spirited discussion by the NCS members on the use of effective 2.4 GHz for controlling all but elevator for Control Line Navy Carrier, arranging events at the Nats, and expanded skill classes. There was almost unanimous support for 2.4 GHz and easing the unofficial flying load on day three by flying provisional electric and nitro classes on the same day. But the members thought that we should stick to Sportsman and regular-skill classes for now. NN Art Johnson s Guardian has a fine takeoff... but not-so-fine 50-point landing.

CL Navy Carrier Ted Kraver reporting. Bill Bishoff with his colorful Class I and Class II Martin MO-1s is up for processing. Contestant Pete Mazur and Event Director John Vlna process the current Navy Carrier Class II record holder. Bill shows you how to do an 80-pound pull test and keep your model in one piece. CL Contest Directior Brenda Schuette provides some direction for John Vlna Event Director. Pete Mazur with his MO-1 puts up the signature flight of the day. From blazing takeoff, to steady 60 hang, to smartly trapping on the third wire, he secures first place.

CL Precision Aerobatics CL Precision Aerobatics Day 3 Allen Brickhaus reporting. I WILL NOT be publishing any photos of the scoreboards as we wish the judges to be able to read and enjoy NatsNews without fear of bias due to knowing the scores until the last amount of data is revealed to the pilots. Sorry for this absence, but those numbers will be published when they are available. The first day of qualifying began calmly with action on the grass circles for those who had later flight times. The judges were amassed on circles three and four for a final clinic before the actual competition began. Winds remained calm until the middle of the second round of flights. Advanced pilots flew first then the Open competitors followed suit on the circles. One judge spoke to me that very few of the Open fliers flew the second round due to more brisk winds and their own knowledge that the score they accumulated was enough to pass on the next round on Thursday. As stated before I will not be alluding to anyone s placement on their respective circle and add some local flavor to the tent side of the equation. The PAMPA meeting began Wednesday evening with the executive council at 5 p.m. while the general meeting began around 6:15 p.m. The final motion to adjourn happened around 7 p.m. Jim Vornholt, the new Secretary/ Treasurer and Membership Chairman, brought forth some items to lower costs and ways to improve membership. Those exact items will be printed in an upcoming Stunt News after the Nats. Don McClave, our new PAMPA President, opened the executive council meeting and ran both that portion and the general meeting with great efficiency. Randy Smith and the PAMPA competition committee brought forth a proposal, which was read and thoughts returned to district representatives, that the PAMPA class of Expert be added to next year s Nats. That proposal passed by a 10 to 1 vote. Note that Open, Junior and Senior, and the Walker Cup will not be changed. As with Advanced, Expert will not be available to fly for the Walker Cup. Check the Stunt News when that proposal is printed. I heartily encouraged any one to attend your PAMPA meeting at the Nats next year.nn Derek Barry gives fatherly advice to Gavin while passing in front of tent row at the L pad.

CL Precision Aerobatics Allen Brickhaus reporting. Paul Walker goes back to his more familiar Impact looks instead of his also nice jet-styled model he flew the last two years. Larry Lindburg and Andy Stokey keep an eye on an unidentified pilot during his flight. Frank Williams from the Houston area brought his electric-powered Vortex to Muncie this year. The James/ Beth Mills family gave Bob Hunt a Mustang shirt and the official greeter was their son Ben.

CL Precision Aerobatics Allen Brickhaus reporting. Mrs. and Mr. Mark McKinney shade themselves from the beating sun on Wednesday at the L pad. (Back row) Jim Lee, Fred Krueger, Jim Schuett, (front row) Brad Jungheim, Michael Schmitt, and Dennis Vander Kurr get out of the sun, wind, and 98 weather. Jim Rhoades displays his Gerry Worth Apteryx after winning Classic the day before on the grass circles. Mike McHenry and Allen Goff prepare Mike s Zero for an early morning practice flight before the first qualifying rounds on Wednesday morning. Paul Walker is very happy with his new Impact and has a smile a mile wide.

CL Speed DAY THREE is the standing start events Formula.40, 21 Proto, and Perkey. Another hot, breezy day with high humidity was on tap for Nats Speed. Manytime Nats winner Carl Dodge was first up with one of his three Perkey entries. His Taipan-powered entry led in the speed category until late in the day when Team Wallick made its final flight with a Russian F2C-powered diesel engine entry. The team took over the top spot with a speed of Nanette Wallick, team pilot, did a great job piloting the Wallick entry. Carl had one attempt left but was unable CL Speed Day 3 to reclaim the lead. Nanette and Dave Wallick finished first, followed closely by Carl Dodge at Third was Bill Hughes, at 93.54, and fourth was the Pat Hemple/Brandon Robinson team at Bill Hughes (the overall average winner) placed second at A special thanks to Bill Hughes of B&L Hobbies, who has supplied the trophies for the Perkey Speed event since its inception. Thanks again, Bill. The top five places in Form.40 were all powered by Nelson 40s, and the first four were all the same design by Dave Mark, Warren Gregory reporting. the current record holder. This design is in its 14 th version. Finishing fifth at was Glen VanSant, fourth place went to Bill Hughes at , third went to Chris Montagino at Second place at went to Dave Mark. The winner, was Minnesota s Dave Fischer at , which he did on his last attempt after blowing two bladders on attempts two and three. 21 Proto was won by Glenn Lee who has won the event several times and previously held the record. Glenn s speed was ; second went to Dick Shannon at NN

CL Speed Warren Gregory reporting.

CL Combat It looks like a kill, but it isn t. The one on the right is towing an invisible knot while his opponent tries to line up to take it off. FAST F2D is a simple, easy-to-run event for Combat fliers. It works great with readily available equipment. Upcoming F2D rules changes may make even more engines available used as the rules dictate changes for noise levels that current motors can t be modified to take. There were 19 entries and 15 fliers. Most of the familiar names flew, but a few newcomers, including Ryland Ritch, were present. It takes a brave young guy to put himself up against experienced competitors. True to form, most of the matches ran no more than a minute or so before a kill. The first match, Richard Stubblefield against Brian Stas ended that way. We should have kept track of the number of kills, but didn t. There were no ties and no reflights. I d guess out of the 30 matches 20+ were decided by kills. The midairs were relatively few, but a couple were spectacular. In the second round Phil Cartier got his engine running right against Howard Williams. After an unscheduled pit stop he got back up and they did some serious chasing. CL Combat Day 3 Phil Cartier, Bob and Arlene Mears reporting. Cartier ended up hitting Williams plane about one foot ahead of a kill. The evidence was clear. The prop chopped a big hole in the muffler, somehow not cutting the nylon string holding it on, with only very minor damage to the rest of the plane. Howard won with a cut and some air time. The other notable midair occurred in the semifinal match between old flying buddies Rich Lopez and Chuck Rudner. Amongst the three finalists they had not flown against each other. The match started slowly with Lopez getting up first. Rudner got a cut. After about a minute and a half they had a tremendous midair and the planes came twirling down. Out of the mess the two streamers cut in middle of the string floated to the ground. That sent the judges to the rulebook to find the little-used paragraph that says that if the judges cannot determine which string was cut first, the cuts and airtime will be used. That gave Chuck Rudner a place in the finals round. This made it interesting on who was quick on his propeller and quick on his feet. The only exception we saw to this was when Bob Mears got to his handle first but waited for his opponent, Richard Stubblefield, to get to his handle and they launched simultaneously. Folks from Texas and California made it to the finals. There was a really hard and tight turning match between Bob Mears and Chuck Rudner, as would be expected from two of Combat s finest pilots, with Bob getting two cuts and a kill and a clean match. Not unusual from Bob, since we ve seen him in the Combat winner s circle many times before. Final results: 1 Bob Mears, Texas 2 Chuck Rudner, California 3 Rich Lopez, California 4 Richard Stubblefied, Texas 5 Howard Williams, Texas A special thanks to Chris Gay and his team of judges for doing a great job running the event. NN Fast F2D finals: Andy Mears launches his brother Bob, while Chuck Rudner starts in the background. It was an excellent flyoff match. After a lot of close-in flying, they had a spectacular midair. The planes pinwheeled around each other and both streamers came floating down next to each other a double kill. After a quick look at the rules for one of the least-used paragraphs, Bob Mears was declared the winner by his cut and air time since the judges couldn t determine which kill came first.

CL Combat Phil Cartier, Bob and Arlene Mears reporting. Howard Williams launches Richard Stubblefield while Brian Stas motors overhead. Richard Stubblefield wonders how Rich Lopez did the same thing to him as CD Chris Gay walks off to record the results. Howard Williams gets Stubb s stuff ready to go back to the pits. Rich launches Chuck Rudner late against Bob Mears. Mears got a cut that killed the engine. Some quick pit work got him back up. After a lot of mixing it up Mears got a clean kill. Neil Simpson tries to figure out how Bob Burch got a quick kill on him. The kill rule in Fast Combat can result in some embarrassingly short matches for the loser. Sometimes they break. Phil Cartier hit Howard Williams plane a foot too far forward. Muffler damage is unusual. Missing the string was poor timing. Control Line Combat winners.
