CL Stunt Australian newlyweds, PJ and Rhiannon Rowland, are spending one week of their extended honeymoon at the Nats. We think our old friend PJ picked a good one! The official CL Stunt flying began on Wednesday with the first two Advanced, Expert, and Open Class qualification rounds. All four circles on the L-Pad were used, and two official flights were flown. The high score from Wednesday s flying will be added to the high score from the two qualification rounds that will be flown on Thursday to determine the finalists in each class. The weather was better on Wednesday, with unusually cool temperatures, overcast skies for most of the morning, and light winds in the morning. Each of the competitors had the opportunity to put up two flights in reasonable conditions. Hopefully, the good weather pattern will continue at least as far as the low wind conditions are concerned. A bit warmer conditions would also be nice The morning started with an hour of open practice flying on circles one, two, and three. During that hour of practice time, the judges were watching warm-up flights on circle four. Each circle was then assigned three judges and the flying began. PJ and Rhiannon Rowland are visiting the Nats as part of a long honeymoon trip. PJ has been here before, and we are happy to see him again, and especially happy to see him here with his delightful bride. Good on ya mate! Also visiting from Australia again is Joe Parisi. Joe is the current Australian Nats Champ. If you haven t met Joe, or PJ and Rhiannon yet, please take the opportunity to say G day to them before the Nats is over! Bob Hunt Howard Rush is using the Nats as a warm-up contest for his upcoming trip to Poland to attend the World Championships as one member of our F2B team. Monty Summach hails from Saskatoon, Canada. His fl ies this original-design 57 Special. He ship is powered by a PA 61.

Frank McMillan looks pleased with the latest in his long line of originaldesign Caudron stunt models. This is the fi rst one of Frank s sleek models that features electric power. CL Stunt Seven-time Nats Champ, David Fitzgerald, returns to fl ying after serving two stints as the Nats Event Director. Thanks for your service, David! New Yorkers Jose Modesto (L) and Will DeMauro prepare Jose s original-design stunt model for fl ight in round two. Gene Martine gives the PA engine in his SV-11 a morning burp. It was cold and the engines needed a warm-up run. Brett Buck returned to Nats competition after a two-year layoff. He is shown here with his excellent-fl ying, original-design Infi nity. It is RoJett powered. Rich and Eddie Oliver take Rich s original-design Maverick back to the pits after a qualifi cation fl ight. It is RoJett powered.

RC Combat The winners circle. Now this was a good round of Combat. Did author Don Grissom even make a cut with his foot? Well, I did not see this coming when I signed up for the Nats! After many years of very hot weather, who knew that you would need a coat and long pants in the middle of the summer? Because I am from Georgia, this was more like a winter day for me, although looking around at the field, I guess I was the only one who was not prepared for the cold weather. I think I will remember to pack a coat next year, but it may never be needed again in the summer. After the cold start, we were able to get a quick start with completing SSC, Open, and Gnat Combat. We started with SSC in the morning. We still had everyone flying, so we again ran two heats per round. We started the first round with crepe paper, but after having some moisture issues, we ended up changing to forestry tape, which can handle the wet environment. We ended up running two rounds before we switched back. The forestry tape is harder to mess with and does not cut as easily. When the event was completed, Eric Gilkey ended up in fourth place with a score of In third place was David Smithgall with a score of In second place was Andy Runte (I did learn that the E in his last name is not silent) who scored a total of First place again went to William Drumm III with a score of Next up was Open B, which was really fast today because there was not as much wind as there was yesterday. We ended up with many more damaged planes, which meant that many of the scoring opportunities were not there later in the day. In fourth place was Tim Gillow with a score of In third place was David Smithgall with a score of In second place was William Drumm III with a score of 2924, and finally, Eric Gilkey came in first in Open B with a score of 4152, which was more than 1000 points ahead of William. After Open B, we finished the inaugural Gnat event at the Nats. After having so many issues with the wind the day before there were not many issues this day since the wind was light most of the day. We gave out trophies to the top three with Michael Lapacz coming in third with a score of Next was Bill Geipel in second place with a score of Finally, in first place was Andy Runte with a score of This currently gives us three different winners for the week so far. On Thursday, we will continue with RC Combat with Scale 2948 and Limited B. Scale 2948 is one of the best events to watch because the planes are Scale planes from World War II, such as P-51 Mustangs, P-47s, and Zeros. The big difference between this and other events is that they do not turn as well, which leads to more pursuit combat which resembles real warbird combat. Next we will be running Limited B which is a lot like Open B, but with propeller requirements and rpm limits, which slows down the planes but gives you the performance that SSC does not have. I hope you get a chance to check it out since it is one of the best spectator events but it is even more fun to fly. Don Grissom

CL Speed Wednesday, day three of the 2014 Nats, started very cloudy and 57, with a possibility of sunshine in the afternoon. Day three is the standing-start events F-40, Perky, and.21 Proto..21 Proto was canceled due to our only participant, many-time Nats winner and former record holder, Glenn Lee, being involved in an auto accident Tuesday afternoon. Cool temperatures still prevailed as the day started with the first four F-40 contestants settling for attempts. The next series of attempts was more successful. Chris Montagino put up a personal best effort in F-40 since 10% was implemented with a great run of , which would give him another National Championship at this year s Nats. Glen VanSant posted a speed of for third place. The current record holder, David Mark, used all four attempts to end up in second place with on his fourth try. This year s Perky event had 12 contestants and many of them entered multiple models. Butch Andrews, on his fourth attempt and last flight of the day at 4:55 p.m., put up a flight of for third place with his Nelson-powered model. Bill Hughes, whose B&L Hobbies sponsors this event awards, won second with his OPS-powered model at Our National Champion this year in Perky was again Carl Dodge, with Taipan power. His speed was Patrick Hempel was the average winner (85+) with a speed of Tomorrow, day four, is A Speed, B Speed and the popular Sport Jet. Warren Gregory

CL Racing Mark Warning catching. (Top) Jim Bradley before the start of a Slow Rat Race. (Bottom) David Betz Pitting his B Team Racer. Okay, I know that when they asked me to write the Control Line Racing column for the NatsNews, they expected me to write about who flew what, what kind of times they turned, and who took home the trophies. However I must deviate from that for just a minute. I have attended all but one AMA Nats since Anyone attending a Nationals during this time period could expect windy weather, especially on any day they were scheduled to fly. It would rain at least once during the week they were there, and normally we expected the temperatures to be in the 90- to 100-plus-degree range. Taking this into consideration, I packed my clothing for this year expecting the weather to be typical. Tuesday night after dinner, I found myself at a local farm and home store purchasing a long-sleeve shirt and a zip-up hooded sweatshirt in preparation for the expected below-normal temperatures forecast for the following day. When I arrived at the field on Wednesday, the thermometer in my truck read 55, and when I left it read 69. I know now what I will pack in the future no matter what. Now let us get back to what I really am supposed to write about. As you know, the day started out rather cool for this time of year and we were also blessed with relatively light winds, making the choice of pit area a non-factor. First up was Slow Rat. Slow Rat is flown with a profile airplane with a minimum 300-squareinch wing and a.25-size motor. Most of the engines used are converted car motors. Heat races are 70 laps in length and require at least one pit stop. There was one new team entered in Slow Rat. Mark and Mick Warning, who normally fly RC Pylon, have recently taken up Control Line Racing. Not only was this the first time they had entered Slow Rat, it was their first time entering any racing event. Their inexperience, however, showed very little. Mark did a good job of pitting the airplane, while Mick did a good job getting in and out of the pits along with flying with someone else in the center of the circle. They did well enough to finish third. After the racing was over, Mark and Mick were seen taking pictures, and asking questions of the other contestants in the event. I am certain that we will be seeing them at future Nats. The results are as follows: Contestant Heat Race Final Race Place Bob Oge 3: : st Bill Lee 3: : nd Mick Warning 11: : rd Jim Bradley 3: : th After Slow Rat, Super Slow Rat was flown. The difference between the two events is the engine used. Although Slow Rat has very few restrictions on what motor can be used, Super Slow Rat requires the use of a stock, plain-bearing.25. Unfortunately I left the results at the flying site, so I will have to give you the times for both Super Slow Rat and B Team Race in my report on Thursday s event. Super Slow Rat: 1 st place, Bill Lee; 2 nd place, Mike Greb; 3 rd place, Bob Oge. B Team Race, which is Control Line Racing s nostalgia event, requires planes to be similar to the ones flown in the 1940s through 1960s, using a.29-size engine. B Team Race: 1 st place, Glen VanSant; 2 nd place, David Betz; 3 rd place, Ron Duly. Today s photos are from David and Tara Betz. Melvin Schuette

RC Pylon The Cliff Telford Memorial Scholarship continues to be one of Pylon Racers dearest charities. It helps young students accomplish their education dreams. This year we are raffling a ready-to-fly Q-500 from cdmaracing.com, with a Jett 426 motor, Performance Model Products mount, Kirby Graphics, and Spektrum radio from Horizon Hobby, all built by Tom Scott. The raffle drawing was Wednesday before the banquet and the proceeds were presented to AMA President Bob Brown. Thank you to Tom Scott and all who made this great contribution possible. Seven rounds of 426 Q-500 were completed on for both Matrix A and B, and 14 racers from each matrix were selected to go onto the finals. The top 12 from each matrix and then the two fastest times aside from the top 12 make up the 14 from A plus B to make the 28 racers final matrix. So far, we had a week with very few incidents but that was about to change. The 35 heats of Q-500 had more gore and carnage than a Freddie Kruger and Texas Chainsaw Massacre festival! I could try to name the people who lost an airplane, but that could make a decent-size phonebook. I would guess that more than a third of the entries were casualties of midair collisions, leaving the survivors racing one or no competitors in the last heats. We had three flyoffs: 7 th through 9 th, 5 th and 6 th, and 1 st through 4 th. The big finale showcased Matt Fehling, Tom Scott, Jim Allen, and Robert Triggs flying for the championship. Tom took the hole shot but Jim Allen and Matt chased him down to make it a three-way battle with Triggs not too far behind. Mid race, Matt Fehling caught the wake of Tom s and Jim s twice, taking his airplane where no man has gone before, but somehow managed to stay in the battle. Then the pilots began to fly faster than the callers and cuts started to happen. Miraculously, no one hit each other and when the cuts were posted Jim Allen was standing on top as the new AMA 426 Q-500 champion. Santiago Panzardi The Q-500 winners! Gary Freeman Junior and Senior. 12 CL Combat Rylan Ritch gets the Best Junior award from Event Director Chris Gay. The top three in F2D fast, Chuck Rudner (California) third, Neil Simpson (Massachusetts) second, and Richard Stubblefi eld (Texas) fi rst. F2D Fast started out with a bang in the first two matches. Alex Rennick laid the first kill on Paul Kubek, taking a piece off of the tail of Paul Kubek s plane. In the second match, Ed Bryzs laid a clean kill on Rylan Ritch. The rest of the 14 entries followed quickly through the first round. The second round was for the losers to try and get back on track. Brian Stas, Chuck Rudner, and Paul Kubek got wins, and Rylan got the seven-man bye. The knockout elimination got off to a slow start. Most of the judges had forgotten what a tournament pyramid looks like. When that was straightened out a quick three-match round brought the pilots down to eight. Leonardo Silva (Mexico), Neil Simpson, and Richard Stubblefield sent Rylan, Ed Bryzs, and Howard Williams to the sidelines with cuts, kills, and midairs. The four matches sent Paul Kubek, Neil Simpson, Chuck Rudner, and Richard Stubblefield to the quarter finals. The real kicker match of the day was a brilliant collision/double kill between Neil Simpson and Paul Kubek where the planes helicoptered down, not quite in flames. It took a few minutes to find the double kill in the wreckage, but Neil got third into the finals with a few seconds of airtime. The final three matches went pretty decisively but messy. Stubblefield took out Rudner in a fairly long match that saw both pilots on the ground. Richard got a cut and a berth in the finals. Chuck and Paul Kubek flew a clean, quick match with Rudner getting a fairly quick kill and taking third. The finals were pretty quick barely a minute. Neil got up first but Richard got a cut, a piece of the airplane, and first place. Phil Cartier

Chuck Rudner lays a clean kill on Alex Rennick in round four (eight-man round). CL Combat Neil and Paul s helicopter ride got Neil a ride to the fi nals. It took the judges a few minutes to sort the bits out and fi nd the kills.

CL Navy Carrier MO Heaven (or MO Hell your choice). Pete Mazur, Dick Perry, Eric Conley, and Burt Brokaw brought a total of seven MO-1 models to the Nats. Like them or not, they are well-suited to Navy Carrier fl ying. It appears the weather problems of torrential downpours and high winds are behind us. The weather on Wednesday was ideal, and the scores reflected that fact. Eric Conley took an early lead in the Class I Gas competition. Peter Mazur chased him throughout the day, but neither of his two official flights, although earning very respectable scores, was sufficient to unseat Eric, and Pete ended in second place. Class II Gas was a different story, with no successful flights during the morning hours for a variety of reasons mostly equipment issues. Planes that were flying flawlessly only two days before, misbehaved in the competition when it counted. Paul Kegal was the first to fly a complete flight. Although others pursued him throughout the afternoon, he held onto his first-place position until the end. In Class I Electric, Pete Mazur ended up in first place, but his scores were improving through three flights to achieve the ultimate result. In Class II Electric, it was Eric Conley who took the lead on his first flight and did not relinquish it. The Eugene Ely Award is named for the first pilot to make shipboard landings and takeoffs. It goes to the Navy Carrier contestant who amasses the highest combined score in three Carrier events Profile Carrier, Class I Carrier, and Class II Carrier. With the electric events added last year, the Navy Carrier Society decided that contestants should be able to choose between gas and electric events when competing for the Eugene Ely Award. Burt Brokaw held a substantial lead in the Eugene Ely Award competition this year following the Profile Carrier competition, but Wednesday offered two opportunities to catch him. Eric Conley took advantage of those opportunities by winning both Class I Gas and Class II Electric. The Eugene Ely Award was presented to Eric at the annual meeting and awards banquet held by the Navy Carrier Society on Wednesday evening. The Navy Carrier Society recognized Art Johnson for willingly giving up his flying opportunities to serve as Navy Carrier Event Director so the rest of us could fly. Another key official was Ted Kraver who judged slow flight in all six events. Electric Carrier models are developing well for a relatively new event. Top electric scores were challenging the gas scores this year. Of six flights with high speeds above 100 mph, the numbers were evenly divided between the internal combustion engines and the electric motors. The unofficial events are on Thursday, consisting of three classes of Nostalgia Carrier,.15 Carrier, and Skyray Carrier. Dick Perry

CL Navy Carrier Navy Carrier Society President Dick Perry presents the Eugene Ely Award to Eric Conley. Art Johnson (R) received the Carol Johnson Spirit of Volunteerism Award for his hard work as CL Navy Carrier Event Director. Event Director Art Johnson (center) ran Navy Carrier competition very effi ciently. Paul Kegel and Bob Heywood were two of the many contestants and volunteers who timed fl ights. Pete Mazur s MO-1 was one of the new models for the Electric Carrier events. Eric Conley used what little wind we had to good advantage and won both Class I Gas and Class II Electric. Ted Kraver judges the fl ight. Burt Brokaw coaxing a reluctant Class II engine to life as Eric Conley assists.

CL Navy Carrier Paul Kegel s winning Class II Skyraider on landing approach against the afternoon sky. This P-51 Mustang was John Vlna s entry in Class I Electric. John placed second in the event. Burt Brokaw s Class I entry executes a perfect landing. Not all landings were perfect, however! John Vlna s Mustang sheds parts after striking the ramp on a short landing. The model will fl y again.
