Round 3 Race Summary Round 3 saw some new cars join NSW Sports Sedans on the grid, as well as the return of a couple we haven t seen for a while. The weekend saw a good field with plenty of cars across Divisions 1, 2 and 3. We welcome to NSW Sports Sedans Paul Boschert in his Chev Corvette, Endree Saade in the BMW M3 and Matthias Herberstein in his BMW 73M Coupe. Add into the mix the BMWs of David Atkin, Erik Gattermeier and Jason Compton and we might have to consider a BMW trophy 5

Friday Practice Quite a few drivers took part in Friday practice, with most surviving the day unscathed. Most, but not all. The Corvette of Sean Sullivan broke an axle flange, which allowed the left rear wheel to flop about, turning the car around as he accelerated out of turn 9 and putting it heavily backwards into the wall. The damage to the rear of the car was substantial and without enough spares to rebuild it, Sullivan was out for the rest of the weekend. 6

Qualifying The demise of the Corvette left 21 cars to take to the track on Saturday for Qualifying in fine and dry conditions. Billy Cetin continued his good form from the previous round, still feeling comfortable in the Camaro and laying down the gauntlet with the fastest ever qualifying lap at a State Championship round. His time of was nearly a second ahead of Grant Doulman in the Commodore, who qualified on the front row after making some changes to suspension geometry since Round 2. The session didn t end well for Anthony Macready with his Nissan 300ZX breaking the input shaft. He took the car back to the workshop to strip it down and repair it, but would miss Race 1 despite having qualified in 6 th position. 7

Race 1 The fine weather continued for Race 1, but with Sports Sedans being late in the race schedule this time around, the late afternoon sun was in the driver s faces on the main straight and in the run to turn cars took to the track for the first of three races this weekend that would showcase the excellent, close and competitive racing that NSW Sports Sedans has become famous for, with battles throughout the field across all three Divisions. Billy Cetin and Grant Doulman both made good starts off the front row, with the Camaro of Cetin leading the field into turn 1 for the first time. Doulman was right there with him, ready to apply is trade-mark deep dive into turn 2. Cetin had it covered however, and stayed at the front of the pack. Chris Jackson in his Calibra got the jump over Steve Lacey in the other Camaro at the start, so was up into 3 rd position for the opening laps, with Lacey applying pressure wherever he could to try and make the position back up. Simon Copping lost a couple of positions off the start, with the Commodores of both Geoff Whittaker and Fred Axisa getting ahead of him. Copping was followed by Joe Said in the Fiat and the Falcon of Jeff Brown, and then the Mitsubishi Evo 9 of Ed Kreamer, who had made an excellent start and passed several cars by turn 2, the Division 3 car up into 10 th after starting 16 th. Fred Axisa had a moment in turn 9, with the Commodore getting taily as he braked for the hairpin. He managed to hold onto it though, staying ahead of Copping. Up the front Billy Cetin was establishing his lead, with Grant Doulman still with him but not close enough to apply any real pressure. Just behind them however, Steve Lacey was trying everything to get past the Calibra of Chris Jackson. Jackson wasn t giving anything up, holding the Camaro out with a speed that was seemingly a return to his old form. 8

After his excellent start Ed Kreamer was starting to succumb to the grunt of the cars behind him as one after another they picked him off on the main straight. For the time being he was the lead Division 3 car, but there was fierce competition for the Division this weekend, with 6 other cars up against him. Steve Lacey got a good run onto the main straight in the Camaro, getting up next to Jackson s Calibra and then moving past as they crossed the start line to commence lap 3. Lacey then set off after Grant Doulman s Commodore, which already had a gap on him. The BMW of David Atkin and the Falcon ute of Merrick Malouf were entwined in their own battle, which lasted several laps, with the Subaru of Jim Hunter also joining the fray. Meanwhile Geoff Whittaker got past Chris Jackson at turn 2, but Jackson didn t give the position away easily and he pushed hard to stay with Whittaker and regain the spot. Up the front Billy Cetin was now enjoying a comfortable lead in the Camaro, seeming to have the measure of the other drivers behind him. The BMW of Endree Saade was having some handling issues, with the car having a spin at turn 11. Saade pitted the car to attempt to locate the cause, and was out of the race. He was the only DNF for Race 1. Meanwhile Chris Jackson regained 4 th position and was now back ahead of the Commodore of Geoff Whittaker, after Whittaker got loose out of turn 3 and had a major tank-slapper. Darrin Renouf went past the Fiat of Joe Said on the main straight, with the two drivers battling for several laps. At the same time Paul Boschert was getting a handle on his Corvette after losing some positions off the start, now battling with the Alfa of Andrew Leithhead. Boschert made a good move on the inside of Leithhead as they came around turn 8 and while Leithhead had a stab back at him in turn 9, he managed to stay ahead. Boschert would continue to pass the Supra of Glenn Pro and would finish in 12 th place, one second behind Joe Said. As they started to make their way through lapped traffic, the gap between Billy Cetin and Grant Doulman diminished somewhat, although Cetin was still on top of things. Doulman used the opportunity to apply pressure but was unable to find a clean way past. They had a close moment in turn 9 on the last lap, with Cetin catching up to the ute of Merrick Malouf and having to brake more heavily. Doulman could have had a big lunge up the outside, but that could also have ended with the three cars smashing into each other so instead discretion became the better part of valour and Doulman opted to try and pick Cetin up on the crossover out of the corner. Cetin had it covered and took the race win just ahead of Doulman and some 10 seconds ahead of Steve Lacey 9

in 3 rd place. Cetin also claimed the fastest race lap, the only one in the 31-second bracket with a time of 1: Chris Jackson held onto 4 th place, finishing 8 seconds ahead of Geoff Whittaker. Race 2 It rained throughout Saturday night and into Sunday morning, but with the Sports Sedans being late in the race schedule the weather had time to clear a bit for Race 2 with 20 cars heading out on what was mostly a dry track, although there were patches of water off-line and the infield was still wet. Having fixed the Nissan 300ZX overnight, Anthony Macready was back, starting from the rear of the grid. Endree Saade was also back in the BMW, but Glenn Pro was not. His Supra suffered engine damage in Race 1, putting it out for the rest of the weekend. Billy Cetin got a good start in his Camaro, heading into turn 1 in the race lead once again. Grant Doulman didn t start as well, returning to his old recipe of lighting up the rear tyres and stepping sideways before he gathered his composure and got away. Geoff Whittaker got an excellent start to be amongst the lead pack as they headed into turn 1. Anthony Macready didn t start well at all, stalling the Nissan on the grid and only just getting away before the fire marshal s ute overtook him. As the field headed around the back of the circuit for the first time it was led by Billy Cetin, ahead of Grant Doulman, Steve Lacey, Geoff Whittaker, Chris Jackson, Fred Axisa and Simon Copping. Jeff Brown was the head of the Division 2 pack, ahead of Joe Said and Darrin Renouf, then the leading Division 3 Subaru of Jim 10

Hunter. At turn 9 for the first time it was as close as anything between the top 5 cars, with Cetin leading the charge but Doulman, Lacey, Whittaker and Jackson right there with him. Anthony Macready was now on it and moving forward, getting past 5 cars before turn 9 and disposing of a couple more before the end of the opening lap. Endree Saade was also advancing in the BMW M3, having started at the rear of the grid. He passed fellow BMW driver David Atkin on the main straight, before continuing forward and eventually finishing in 12 th place. Up ahead the battle between the Commodore of Whittaker and Jackson s Calibra was hotting up, with Jackson applying maximum pressure in an attempt to move up a position. The awesome racing between the two continued for a couple of laps, before Jackson made a lightning move up the inside through turn 1 and got ahead. Once free Jackson then set off in chase of Steve Lacey s Camaro. Simon Copping s race came unstuck on lap 3, with the Commodore stepping a little wide out of turn 5 and spearing back across the track before colliding heavily with the concrete wall. Whilst Copping was uninjured, the damage to the car was severe and he was out of the race and out of the event. Merrick Malouf was also out on lap 3 after a coil pack failed and he was running without a cylinder. Copping and Malouf would be the only DNFs in Race 2. 11

Meanwhile there was a great battle unfolding between Andrew Leithhead s Alfa, the Subaru of Jim Hunter, Ed Keamer in the Mitsubishi, Paul Boschert s Corvette and the BMW of Endree Saade. The pack produced some great racing, trading positions throughout the race. Anthony Macready was continuing to move forward through the field, getting past Jeff Brown s Falcon into turn 1 after a good run on the main straight. Steve Lacey meanwhile was applying pressure to Grant Doulman, the Camaro all over the back of the Commodore. Lacey got a good run onto the main straight, getting up next to Doulman as they crossed the start line and having the inside run through turn 1. He covered through turn 2 and emerged ahead of the Commodore and now in 2 nd position. Geoff Whittaker s lap times started to drop off, with the gap ahead to Jackson increasing and both Fred Axisa and Anthony Macready now starting to catch him. Both drivers got past the red Commodore, with Axisa finishing in 5 th place, Macready in 6 th and Whittaker 7 th. Up the front the race was still being controlled by Billy Cetin and he took the race win by 4 seconds, once again a step ahead of everyone with a fastest lap time of 1: Steve Lacey took 2 nd place in the Camaro, bringing the overall championship battle up to Cetin. Grant Doulman finished in 3 rd place, only just surviving a rear suspension failure that saw him cross the line in a cloud of tyre spoke. His car proved to be unrepairable and that was his last race of the weekend. Chris Jackson finished in 4 th place, just 2 seconds behind Doulman. 12

Race 3 The weather had cleared up fully by the time Race 3 came around, but with the casualties from Race 2 and two drivers departing the track early only 16 Sports Sedans would take to the grid for the trophy race. When the race got underway it didn t go as well for Billy Cetin off the line, with Steve Lacey getting the jump on him. Cetin recovered but the two Camaros both had the same line through turn 1, and as we ve seen before, that doesn t work out well. The cars touched, causing chaos amongst the charging field behind them. Both Camaros sustained damage, Cetin s at the right rear and Lacey s at the left front and both limped back into the paddock area and out of the race. The aftermath of the turn 1 incident saw the Calibra of Chris Jackson into the race lead, closely followed by the Commodores of Geoff Whittaker and Fred Axisa, then Anthony Macready in the Nissan 300ZX. A safety car was called after Cetin and Lacey had collided, so the field was slowed up for a lap. Both drivers returned to the paddock without assistance, so the safety car was quickly called back in and the race continued. When it did Jackson was charging hard, closely followed by Whittaker who had new tyres on the Commodore for this race. They were flowed by Fred Axisa and Anthony Macready, then Joe Said in the Fiat, Jeff Brown s Falcon and the Commodore of Darrin Renouf. Macready then got past Axisa s Commodore at turn 2 to move up into 3 rd position. Meanwhile Paul Boschert was enjoying his first time out in Sports Sedans, making up a couple of spots early in this race and then having a great battle with Darrin Renouf throughout the rest of the race. Both drivers raced clean and hard, neither wanting the other to have an advantage and it was awesome to watch. Renouf came out on top, finishing in 6 th place just ahead of Boschert in 7 th. A finish in the top 10 and picking up 3 rd 14

place trophy in the Koen Photo Division 2 saw Boschert as happy as a pig in the proverbial, and there s a fair chance we ll see him back again. Renouf and Boschert weren t the only ones enjoying some great racing though, with Division 3 runners Jim Hunter and Andrew Leithhead hard at it, with Merrick Malouf also joining in. There was real racing going on at the pointy end too, with Whittaker trying everything to get past Jackson. Lap after lap they battled, with Macready close behind and ready to pounce if either of the front two cars had a problem. Fred Axisa was running 4 th just behind Macready, but a broken exhaust collector saw him out of the race after 4 laps. A lap later and Merrick Malouf was out of the race, this time with a deflated tyre. The constant pressure being applied by Geoff Whittaker paid off, with the Commodore taking the race lead at turn 2. Jackson didn t give up though, commencing a race-long battle that saw him trying several times to dive through the inside at turn 1. This was traditional, close Sports Sedan racing at its best and it was awesome to watch. Jeff Brown was enjoying a great race in the Falcon, racing early with Joe Said before progressing forward a few positions. He ultimately took 4 th place outright and was the first of the Division 2 cars home. 15

Despite the constant pressure from Chris Jackson, Geoff Whittaker held out to take the race win. Jackson finished in 2 nd place, just half a second behind. Anthony Macready claimed the 3 rd place trophy in what was an excellent Sports Sedan race. NOW IS THE TIME TO GET YOUR ENTRIES IN FOR ROUND 4 16

Major Sponsor Renewed for 2014 and Beyond Kumho Tyres has renewed their sponsorship of the NSW Sports Sedan Championship again in 2014, signing up for a two year deal. The re-signing of a major sponsor is testament to the fact that NSW Sports Sedans is heading in the right direction in terms of competitor numbers, quality of racing and management of our category in this state. The sponsorship deal includes the following: Permanently discounted tyres for all registered members (see the updated price list below) A new set of tyres for each of the three Division winners in 2014 All windscreen banners and stickers supplied Trackside support provided by Peak Race Tyres at all Sports Sedan race meetings in NSW The continued research and sourcing of other tyre sizes suitable for Sports Sedans Financial support for the club, including funds towards DGB Media coverage of all 6 championship rounds in 2014 This represents an excellent deal for our category, our club and our members. Details of this a r e included in the 2014 NSW Sports Sedan Championship Regulations, as well as future newsletters. One of the main attractions of Sports Sedans has always been the freedom of the rules and as soon as we start to over-control things and take away choices, we lose what Sports Sedans are supposed to be about. Kumho Tyres recognises this and therefore we are not introducing a control tyre as part of the deal. Not all tyre sizes are able to be catered for as yet, but all members are encouraged to take advantage of the excellent pricing now on offer to our category and support Kumho Tyres in supporting us. The discounted tyre deal applies to financial members of ASSA NSW, who are registered in the 2014 NSW Sports Sedan Championship a good excuse to get your 2014 membership done early! Pricing and discounts will be reviewed quarterly, so keep an eye on your newsletters for the latest tyre bargains. If you would like tyres for a race meeting please pre-order them at least 4 days in advance so that the guys from Peak Race Tyres can estimate how many tyres to bring on the truck. Tyres can be pre-fitted on rims if the rims are delivered to Peak Race Tyres at Parramatta in the week prior to a race meeting. At the track payment for tyres can be made in cash or by EFTPOS. 21 Classes/Divisions for 2014 Just a reminder about the class points system for the 2014 Club Championship. Once again in 2014 there are three divisions, based on lap times. Research conducted into results over the last couple of years has aided in determining the division times, which are based on Eastern Creek GP circuit lap times, with equivalent times calculated for the other NSW circuits. The divisions are: SMP GP SMP Extended SMP North Wakefield Park Division 1 Under 1:37.00 Under 2:03.00 Under 1:07.00 Under 1:03.00 Division 2 1:37.00 to 1: :03.00 to 2: :07.00 to 1: :03.00 to 1:06.00 Division 3 Over 1:42.00 Over 2:08.00 Over 1:10.00 Over 1:06.00 Therefore it doesn t matter what type of car you are driving (i.e. Space Frame or Floor Pan), how fast you go determines what division you run in and you should (in theory) be on track racing amongst drivers who are competing for the same division. Divisions will generally be allocated based on the qualifying session from Round 1. Of course, there may be some issues with cars or other factors that will provide an inaccurate gauge of some lap times. The committee may re-allocate some drivers into another division based on prior results and lap times in dry conditions. Similarly, any driver who wishes to be placed in a higher division can request this through the committee so if you know that Round 1 is not going to show the true potential of your car but that you will be improving throughout the season, you can opt to move up a division in advance. Changes to divisions will only occur after Round 1 in exceptional circumstances, as the Division point scores will be affected if changes are made later in the season. If you missed Round 1 the committee will allocate an appropriate division for later rounds based on historical performance and current, matching lap times from any of the circuits. The committee will also allocate further classes within the three divisions should there be enough competitors. For example if we get a few historic Sports Sedans, some ex-v8 Supercars, or a contingent of utes or trucks running for the season then class points will be allocated and a class trophy awarded at the end of the season. The State Championship will still be decided on outright points and in this regard remains unchanged. 21

Point Scores The point scores for both the State Championship and the Club Championship have been examined by our official point scorer as part of the biennial review process. Minor adjustments have been made to the number of points scored, depending on finishing positions, but otherwise the system of scoring points remains unchanged from last year. Points will be scored as follows: For the State Championship points will be allocated on an outright basis for each of the three races at each round. The fastest qualifier (i.e. pole position) at each round will also be allocated five (5) points. For the Club Championship points will be allocated for each Division and will include qualifying and each of the three races at each round. Therefore if you happen to qualify well but the rest of your weekend goes awry, you still walk away with some points from the round. Where applicable Class points will also be allocated in this way. No extra points are awarded for pole position in the Club Championship. 22

Division 2 Receives Sponsorship Support Round sponsor and regular photographic contributors Koen Photo will again provide extra support to NSW Sports Sedans in 2014 by supplying trophies and other benefits for Division 2 competitors. The NSW Committee has been looking at ways to attract more Division 2 competitors and build upon the class, and the support from Koen Photo has gone a long way to achieving this. Koen Photo will be awarding Division 2 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place trophies for each of the six State Championship rounds, then top 3 trophies for the year at the Presentation Night. They will also be making a special Encouragement Award to someone in Division 2. The NSW Committee is very grateful to Koen Photo for their ongoing support and in particular their push to improve Division 2 in If you are a Division 2 competitor or would like to be, please contact the Committee through Geoff Whittaker, or simply turn up and race! 23
