5 Introduction Included in this publication are population figures and trends for the state of Indiana compiled using data from the 2010 US Census. State, county, city, town, and rural populations are displayed and compared with each other and with population figures from previous years census data. In summary, Indiana s population increased from 6,080,474 to 6,483,802 over a ten-year period from 2000 to This increase of 403,328 yields a 6.63% increase, which compares to a national average increase of 9.7% over the same ten-year period. Indiana ranks 14 th in the nation for total population count. The 2010 census provides the state with new information concerning the size and growth of its population. Business and industry can use the information to analyze market demands and other economic factors. It is also important for local governments to relate these new population figures and trends with the needs and requests for government services such as roads, streets, schools, sanitation, utilities, etc. According to state code (IC ), data from the 2010 census may first be used for distributions beginning in May 2012 after being received and acknowledged by the governor. To assist state, county, and town officials in the interpretation of the 2010 census figures, this report presents several tabulations and rankings that directly compare population growth and total population for city, county, and town units. In this report, rural population for a county unit is taken to be the difference between the total county population and the population of all cities and towns that lie in the county. It should be noted, when analyzing rural and urban population figures, that this interpretation of rural population is at variance with that used in the official census reports. All data provided in this report was obtained from the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce at their website, For more information, the Bureau of the Census may be contacted directly by telephone at (301)

6 Early Population Counts in Indiana Indiana was organized as a Territory in 1800 and was admitted into the Union as the 19 th State in December of The 1800 census figures show about 2500 people located in present day Indiana. The decennial census figures for Indiana are as follows: , , , , , ,350, ,680, ,978, ,192, ,516, ,700, ,930, ,238, ,427, ,934, ,662, ,193, ,490, ,544, ,080, ,483,802 The 1840 census seems to be the first Indiana census to be compiled by counties. In that census, Wayne County was the most populous county in the State because it served as the gateway to the state of Indiana via the National Road, which is now US 40. Indiana s present day population centers were well established, growing communities shortly after the turn of the century. Most of today s population centers were among the leaders in the early census figures for the state. 2

7 County Counts 2010 A tabulation of county population figures (Table 1) shows that 63 of 92 counties saw an increase in population from 2000 to Seventeen counties had an increase of 5,000 or more. Twenty-nine counties had a decrease in population; eleven counties had a decrease of more than 1,000. Hamilton County s increase of 91,829 since 2000 was the greatest county population gain, and at 50.25%, it also had the largest percent increase of any county. Grant County had the largest decrease of population (3,342) during the past decade, while Blackford County had the largest percent decrease at 9.13%. Along with the following county tables, there are two geographic figures, which show each county s total population change and percentage change from Population of Rural Areas The population figures for rural areas (Table 1) were determined for each county as the difference between total county population and the total population of all incorporated cities and towns in the county. Therefore, the population figures for rural areas represent all unincorporated areas for each county. 3
