Series History Strictly Stock Series, 1949 NASCAR started off with its highest tier being called the Strictly Stock Series in its opening season of competition. The series ran eight races with Red Byron being crowned the inaugural champion. Grand National Series, After its debut season, NASCAR rebranded to the Grand National Series for the next 22 years. The naming change focused on making the sport the prominent series for stock car racing in America. Winston Cup Series, The longest running sponsor of NASCAR s top series took over in 1971 tying the cigarette brand to stock car racing for over 30 years. Under the Winston Cup name, NASCAR grew tremendously, especially with the telecast of the 1979 Daytona 500 and the success of Richard Petty in the early Winston Cup days. The health initiatives around smoking were part of the reason why Winston initially started sponsoring NASCAR because of the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act that banned cigarette-related TV commercials in That same concern and focus on smoking also eventually moved Winston out of its NASCAR sponsorship in Nextel Cup Series, After spending over 30 years with Winston, NASCAR headed in a completely different direction when telecommunications company, Nextel, became the title sponsor of the Premier Series. The move to the Nextel Cup Series also saw a major change in how NASCAR s champion was decided as the Chase for the Cup was recreated, initially featuring 10 drivers battling for the title in the final 10 races of the 36 race season. When Sprint and Nextel merged in 2006, the announcement came that it would become the Sprint Cup Series in Sprint Cup Series, In the final year of the Nextel Cup, the Chase field increased to 12 drivers and continued adjustments to the playoff format continued throughout Sprint s entire run as the series sponsor. In 2014, a wide range of changes were made to The Chase with an addition to 16 drivers competing for the championship in an elimination format with four drivers eliminated after every three races until four compete for the championship. Monster Energy Series, 2017-Present It was announced in 2014 that Sprint wouldn t extend its contract with NASCAR beyond 2016 and the search for a new title sponsor started. It took until the 11th hour for Monster Energy to strike a deal with NASCAR to take over as the new title sponsor of the Premier Series.

Reading Library How Moonshine Bootlegging Gave Rise to NASCAR Even before Prohibition, erstwhile distillers were gathering in secret locations throughout rural areas in the south, brewing up homemade spirits to sell under the radar and away from alcohol taxes and bans. The drinks were made under the light of the moon, in hopes that no one would detect smoke rising from the stills and ultimately bust the operation a practice that earned the booze its name moonshine. Moonshining dates back to the 1700s, when officials imposed taxes on liquor sales. Farmers and immigrants throughout the south took to making their own batches to sell for extra money, tax free, to counteract the effects of extreme poverty in the region. And with the introduction of Prohibition, production skyrocketed, creating a thriving black market business for secretly distilled hooch. Each hidden distillery needed to use runners drivers in understated or otherwise ordinary-looking cars who could smuggle moonshine from the stills to thirsty customers across the region. On the outside, the cars looked stock, normal enough to avoid attention. But inside, both the mechanics of the cars and the drivers behind the wheel were far from ordinary. The vehicles were outfitted with heavy-duty shocks and springs, safeguarding the jars containing the hooch from breaking on bumpy mountain roads. The seats in the back were usually removed so more booze could fit. And high-powered engines gave the cars extra speed to outrun any cops and tax agents along the route. As for the drivers, they knew every path in the area like the backs of their hands, able to outpace those in pursuit, even turning off headlights and still successfully navigating. They became known for their highspeed reckless driving coining maneuvers like the bootleg turn, in which the drivers would quickly turn the car around in a controlled skid, either to elude the cops chasing them or to play a game of chicken with them, driving head-on at full speed until they abruptly changed course. When the runners weren t smuggling alcohol, many spent their free time racing other runners for bragging rights. From the 1930s on, once Prohibition had ended, demand for bootlegged alcohol waned and the runners found themselves with souped-up cars yet out of work though they continued to take part in organized races. On December 14, 1947, one of these runners, Big Bill France, held a meeting with other drivers, car owners and mechanics to finally put in place some standardized rules for the races thus NASCAR, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, was born. The first official race was held two months later. In January, Arcadia Publishing released North Carolina Moonshine, a book about the Tar Heel State s role in firewater history, covering everything from the NASCAR connection to local moonshining celebrities. In the book, the authors mention a secret garage hidden in the woods by the North Carolina-Virginia state line, which had opened in the 1930s and specialized in moonshine cars. This garage was operated for over 35 years by a shrewd, large and [purportedly] wily mechanic named Jelly Belly, who provided moonshine runners near and far with powerful cars that were almost untouchable, authors Frank Stephenson Jr. and Barbara Nichols Mulder write. Today, that garage is long gone, but modern explorers can still find remnants of moonshine operations tucked into small nooks alongside rivers and in caves throughout Appalachia and the Blue Ridge Mountains. They can be hard to find, and nearly impossible to determine if the wreckage is, in fact, an old still or just a pile of rubbish and scrap metal. Instead of scouring the mountains yourself, check out these spots that bring moonshine history to life.

Reading Library History of Nascar The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR, has been the second most celebrated and supported professional sports franchises in the United States in terms of fans and television viewers, next to the National Football League. NASCAR is the world s premier motorsports organization that authorizes prestigious stock-car racing events such as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Camping World Truck Series and the Xfinity Series. It sanctions more than 1,500 races in 39 US states, as well as in Canada, Europe and Mexico. NASCAR s roots trace back to bootlegging during the period of Prohibition in the US in the 1920s to 1930s. During this time, whiskey trade was illegal, so people delivered their bootleg whiskey secretly by driving at high speeds to evade the police. This often ends up as informal races, just for bragging rights for who drove the fastest. After World War II, racing of stock cars, or unmodified automobiles, has been increasingly popular. Tracks were drawing more drivers and bigger crowds, but there is no organization. Rules differ from track to track, and the drivers were often victimized by promoters who would run away with all the prize money for the drivers. Some tracks also could not handle the crowds. These problems were observed by William France Sr., who ran the Daytona course in France came to Daytona Florida, from Washington, D.C, to escape the Great Depression in He raced as well, finishing fifth in the 1936 Daytona event, and then promoted a few races before the second World War. On Dec. 14, 1947, France organized a meeting at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach with drivers, promoters, car owners and mechanics to create standards and organized rules for stock car racing. Two months after the organizational meeting, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was born. France embraced leadership for the organization. The first NASCAR-sanctioned race was held on Feb. 15, 1948 in Daytona Beach, where Red Byron from Atlanta won in his Ford Modified. The original NASCAR divisions were Modified, Strictly Stock and Roadster. The roadster division was easily abandoned due to lack of fan appeal, while the modified division is now called the Whelen Modified Tour. The first NASCAR Strictly Stock race was held in Charlotte Speedway on June 19, 1949, where Glenn Dunaway initially won. However, he was disqualified after altered rear springs were discovered from his Ford, so Jim Roper was announced as the winner. The Strictly Stock Division was originally for cars with no modifications on the factory models, but modifications for performance and safety were eventually allowed by the mid-1960s. The division was renamed as the Grand National since 1950s. Early NASCAR drivers battle it out on the dirt track at Charlotte Speedway in Daytona race on the 4.1 mile Beach & Road course with 61 cars entering the field. Only 10 would finish.

Reading Library History of Nascar (continued) In the 1950s, the Darlington International Raceway became the first asphalt speedway to host a NASCAR event, where Johnny Mantz won in his Plymouth. More new raceways were established, and the first Daytona 500 was held in Lee Petty was declared as the winner, 61 hours after the race was finished. It took NASCAR officials that long to study news footages of the race between Petty and Johnny Beauchamp, because their finish was that close. Fans have been hooked, and as the sport expanded, new champions emerged. Seventeen years later, a Lee Petty s son Richard raced against David Pearson, and the two drivers crashed before the finish line. Pearson was announced as the winner as it sputtered to the checkered flag making it one of the most famous NASCAR race finish ever. Richard made a comeback three years later and won. He was eventually called The King of stock car racing for being the most accomplished racer in the history of NASCAR. Petty and Pearson, together with Cale Yarborough, Ned Jarrett, Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker ushered NASCAR through an era that featured a schedule of more than 60 races a year. The decade of the 1970s brought further changes for NASCAR. In 1972, William France Jr., France s son, took over the organization s leadership. That year, NASCAR s Cup Series won its first title sponsor the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. After being banned from advertising in television, the company found NASCAR as a promotional outlet, which led to the Grand National Series to be named as the Winston Cup Series. Reynold s involvement also led to the NASCAR Winston West Series and the NASCAR Winston Racing Series, which is now the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series. NASCAR s exposure has grown increasingly. In 1976, the Winston Cup Series took the lead in worldwide motorsports attendance, with more than 1.4 million spectators. In 1979, the Daytona 500 was the first 500 -mile race to be broadcasted in full live in television. In 1981, the annual awards ceremony was moved from Daytona Beach to the bustling city of New York. And by the mid-1980s, Fortune 500 companies began sponsoring individual teams and races as well. In 1982, the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Division, which was now known as the NASCAR Xfinity Series, was born. It was initially sponsored by Anheuser-Busch s Budweiser brand, and was replaced by Nationwide Insurance before being sponsored by Comcast s Xfinity brand. Expansion continued through the 1990s, as the famed New Hampshire International Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway were built in 1993 and 1994, respectively. In 1994, NASCAR introduced the Craftsman Truck Series involving modified, full-bodied pick-up trucks. In 2003, Bill France Jr. s son Brian was named as NASCAR s Chairman and CEO. The following year, the Winston Cup was renamed as the Nextel Cup Series after Nextel Communications assumed sponsorship, and the new Chase championship points system was developed. It gave the sport a post-season comparable to a playoff. During the late 2000s, NASCAR expanded internationally to Canada Mexico and across the Atlantic. In 2017, Monster Energy became the title sponsor, so the series name was changed to Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. It s NASCAR s most popular series, as writers and fans ambiguously use NASCAR as a synonym for the competition. Through the years, different racing divisions have been established. Today, NASCAR has three national series, as well as four regional and two international series.

Five drivers are eligible to win the title as the race began. -owner Alan Kulwicki ends up leading one more lap than Bill Elliott, to earn the five-point bonus for leading the most laps and win the championship by 10 points. AUGUST 6, 1994 The series schedule expands to include the famed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jeff Gordon claims the win in the first Brickyard 400. OCTOBER 23, 1994 Dale Earnhardt joins Richard Petty as second driver to win seven NASCAR series championships clinching the title at Rockingham, N.C. FEBRUARY, 5, 1995 Mike Skinner wins the Skoal Bandit Copper World Classic, the first race of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in Phoenix. 14 years later the series would gain a new sponsor, becoming the Camping World Truck Series. FEBRUARY 18, 2001 Dale Earnhardt Sr. dies in a final lap crash at the Daytona 500. JANUARY 2003 NASCAR unveils the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C NASCAR begins its first season under the Nextel banner, with the series becoming known as the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup (now the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup) Series. A new format is implemented to determine the series champion and is known as the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup (now Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series). MARCH 25, 2007 The car of tomorrow debuts at the Nextel Cup Food City 500 in Bristol, Tenn.. OCTOBER 14, 2009 Inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame is announced in Charlotte, NC. Members include Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson. JULY 19, 2006 Future NASCAR enthusiast Cayden Kincaid Ludlow is born in Meridian, Idaho. MAY 23, 2010 The inaugural NASCAR Hall of Fame class is inducted in Charlotte, N.C.: Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson. DECEMBER 2012 The Generation-6 car is unveiled, bringing NASCAR racing back to its roots of stock cars. The new Gen-6 cars more closely resembled vehicles sold on showroom floors across the country, while becoming even safer and more exciting on the track. FEBRUARY 17, 2013 Danica Patrick makes history by winning the Coors Light Pole Award for the 2013 Daytona 500, becoming the first female to win a pole in NASCAR premier series history. JANUARY 30, 2014 NASCAR Chairman Brian France announces championship format change, virtually guaranteeing a berth in the NASCAR playoffs for each race winner. Key among the changes is a Championship 4 finale where highest finisher among the four eligible drivers at Homestead-Miami Speedway would be crowned champion. NOVEMBER 20, 2016 Jimmie Johnson makes history with his record-tying seventh NASCAR premier series title; joining NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the series leaders with seven championships. DECEMBER 1, 2016 NASCAR and Monster Energy announce a multi-year agreement for the premier series entitlement as well as the prestigious annual NASCAR All-Star Race. Monster Energy, began its tenure as naming rights partner on Jan. 1, 2017, will become only the third company to serve as the entitlement sponsor in NASCAR premier series history, following RJ Reynolds and Sprint/Nextel.

Anatomy of a Race Car Pictured is GEN-6 model, for Radiator Air Intake: Directs outside air into the radiator to cool engine fluids. 2. Brake Air Intakes: Direct outside air to brake discs and rotors for additional cooling. 3. Hood Pins: Four, quick-release metal pins with wire tethers that keep the hood closed. 4. Cowl Induction: Housing for air cleaner that connects the air intake at base of the windshield to the throttle body. 5. Body Panels: Fabricated from 24-gauge/ inch (minimum) cold-rolled sheet metal. 6. Roll Cage: A cage of steel tubing inside the car that protects the driver during impacts and rollovers. 7. Jack Post: Where the jackman places the jack to lift the car during pit stops. 8. Double Frame Rail and Energy Absorbing Material: A combination of steel plating and foam-like, energyabsorbing materials installed in between the roll cage door bars and door panels that attenuate energy upon impact. 9. Window Net: Safety device located in the driver-side window that keeps the driver's head and arms inside the car during an accident. 10. Roof Strips: Two three-quarter-inch-tall aluminum strips that run lengthwise on the roof to help prevent the car from flipping when turned sideways during a spin or accident. 11. TV Camera: Allows NASCAR fans to view the racing from the driver's perspective. 12. Roof Flaps: Helpsprevent car from becoming airborne when turned sideways or backward during spin or accident. 13. Jacking Bolts: Area where crew uses a tool to adjust handling of the car by altering the load on the rear springs. 14. Cooling Vents: Help remove warm air from the cockpit and help cool critical components inside and at the rear of the car. 15. Goodyear Eagle Racing Tires: Treadless radial tires designed specifically for racing. 16. Rear Deck Fin: This tuning tool adjusts rear sideforce and is made of clear polycarbonate. 17. Rear Spoiler: Directs air flowing over the rear of the car, providing downforce to improve the handling.

Evolution of Car Styles

Aero push: When following another vehicle closely, the airflow off the lead vehicle does not travel across the following one(s) in a normal manner. Therefore, downforce on the front of the trailing vehicle(s) is decreased and it does not turn in the corners as well, resulting in an "aero push." This condition is more apparent on the exit of the turns. Aerodynamic drag: A number that is a coefficient of several factors that indicates how well a race vehicle will travel through the air and how much resistance it offers. Crewmen work to get the best "drag horsepower" rating they can, determining how much horsepower it will take to move a vehicle through the air at a certain mile-per-hour rate. At faster speedways teams strive to get the lowest drag number possible for higher straightaway speeds Apron: The paved portion of the racetrack that separates the racing surface from the infield. While listening to a race, you'll hear announcers talk about drivers shooting down on the apron. Now you'll know what they mean. Back marker: Racers certainly don't want to be a back marker, which as implied means they have fallen completely off the pace and are at or near the back of the pack. Balance: When a car doesn't tend to oversteer or understeer, but goes around the racetrack as if it's on rails, it's said to be in balance. Banking: The sloping of a racetrack, particularly at a curve or a corner, from the apron or inside of the track to the outside wall. Degree of banking refers to the height of a racetrack's slope at the outside edge. Camber: The amount a tire is tilted in or out from vertical. Described in degrees, either positive or negative. Chassis: The combination of a car's floorboard, interior and roll cage. Chute: A racetrack straightaway. Terminology Dirty air: Any disturbance of the air around a car that impacts its aerodynamic performance. Dirty air can be displaced, used and discarded from other cars or it can come from running too close to the wall, causing a particular rig to lose control. Donuts: One of the better slang terms on the circuit, donuts are dark, circular, indentation markings on the side panels of stock cars, frequently caused when one vehicle rubs up against another at high speed. Downforce: A combination of aerodynamic and centrifugal force on each tire. The more downforce, the more grip the car has. But more downforce also means more drag and friction that will slow down the car. Downforce can be moved around by jacking weight into or out of each corner of the car. Draft: The aerodynamic effect that allows two or more cars traveling nose-to-tail to run faster than a car running by itself. When one car follows another closely, the one in front cuts through the air that provides less resistance for the car in the back. Drafting: The practice of two or more cars, while racing, to run nose-to-tail, almost touching. The lead car, by displacing the air in front of it, creates a vacuum between its rear end and the nose of the following car, actually pulling the second car along with it. Drag: The resistance a car experiences when passing through air at high speeds. A resisting force exerted on a car parallel to its air stream and opposite in direction to its motion. Garage: The area on the infield of the racetrack where the race cars are parked and worked on by the teams. Groove: The best route around a racetrack; the most efficient or quickest way around the track for a particular driver. The high groove takes a car closer to the outside wall for most of a lap, while the low groove takes a car closer to the apron. Road racers use the term "line." s search for a fast groove, and that has been known to change depending on track and weather conditions. Happy Hour: Slang term for the last official practice session held before an event. Usually takes place the day before the race and after all qualifying and support races have been staged.aerodynamics and other factors.

Handling: Generally, a race car's performance while racing, qualifying or practicing. How a car "Handles" is determined by its tires, suspension geometry, Hauler: The long-haul trailer that stores and transports the NASCAR race cars and team equipment from the race shop to the race track. The so-called hauler is parked in the garage area in front of the team's garage and is used as a way station for team personnel. Interval: The time-distance between two cars. Referred to roughly in car lengths, or precisely in seconds. Lapped traffic: Cars that have completed at least one full lap less than the race leader. Terminology Loose: Cars get loose when the front of the car has more grip than the rear and the rear tires have trouble sticking in the corners. This often causes the machines to fishtail as the rear end swings outward during turns. A minor amount of this can be a good thing at some tracks. A car that is too loose may have its rear end flair out toward the wall in turns. Sometimes referred to as "free" or "oversteer." In qualifying mode teams walk a fine line creating a setup that "frees the vehicle up" as much as possible without causing the driver to lose control. Lucky Dog: During NASCAR races, the Lucky Dog is the first car that is one lap down from the leader(s). When the yellow caution flag come out, this car is led around the field and put into order as the last car on the lead lap, effectively getting a lap back without having to pass through the field. This rule was put into place as a safety precaution to prevent cars from racing to the start/finish line when the track is under caution. Marbles: Debris blown to the upper corners of a track that consists of smatterings of rubber peeled from tires, dirt and gravel. Some drivers blame marbles for a loss of control, though centrifugal forces might have a little something to do with it. Graphic artists went to great lengths to replicate marbles for an air of authenticity in the animated flick "Cars." Also unaffectionately referred to as "loose stuff." NASCAR: Acronym for "National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing," the league that sanctions, owns and operates the sport of stock car racing. Pit road: The area where pit crews service the cars. Generally located along the front straightaway, but because of space limitations, some racetracks sport pit roads on the front and back straightaways. Pit crew: Team members that work in the pits and on the cars during the races themselves. A total of seven team members go "over the wall" during pit stops, including: gas man (he pours the fuel into the car), catch can man (catches the empty can from the gas man), jack man (jacks the car up for tire changes), front tire changer (changes the tires), front tire carrier (passes along tire to changer), rear tire changer (changes rear tires) and rear tire carrier (passes along tire to changer). The pit crew is managed by the team's crew chief. Pit stall: The area along pit road that is designated for a particular team's use during pit stops. Each car stops in the team's stall before being serviced. Pit stand: Also sometimes referred to as the "war wagon." This stand, on the inside of the wall adjacent to the pit stall, is where key team personnel, most notably the crew chief and often the team owner, sit during the race and communicate strategy. It is outfitted with satellite television screens, timing and scoring information, radio controls and other communications relevant to race operations. Pole position: Also referred to as "the pole." It is a term for the foremost position on the starting grid, awarded to the fastest qualifier. Push: Also called "tight" or "understeer," push is when the rear of the car has more grip than the front, which can cause the front end to slide or "push" toward the wall in the corners. While it is true that the driver must get out of the throttle until the car catches so he can turn it to avoid hitting the wall, he also must get out of the throttle in a loose car to avoid the same fate. Quarter panel: The sheet metal on both sides of the car from the C-post to the rear bumper below the deck lid and above the wheel well.without them, speeds could reach more that 210 mph and create a dangerous situation.

Restrictor plate: A restrictor-plate is a thin metal plate with four holes that restrict airflow from the carburetor into the engine. Placed between the base of the carburetor and the engine's intake manifold, it is used to reduce horsepower and keep speeds down. Currently, Talladega and Daytona are the only tracks that mandate the device. Setup: Slang term for the tuning and adjustments made to a race car's suspension before and during a race. Short track: Racetracks that are less than one mile in length. Silly season: Slang for the period that begins during the latter part of the current season, wherein some teams announce driver, crew and/or sponsor changes, and the attendant gossip that follows these changes. Jayski.com is the leading source of insider information on silly season. Splash 'n' go: A quick pit stop that involves refueling the car with the amount of fuel necessary to finish the race and getting out of the pits as quickly as possible. Speedweeks: The three-week period of time between late January and mid-february, beginning with the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona Grand-Am race, and culminating with the Daytona 500, featuring a wide array of racing and motorsports activities at the Daytona International Speedway. Spoiler: (Also referred to as a "blade.") The spoiler is a strip of aluminum that stretches across the width of a race vehicle's rear decklid. It is designed to create downforce on the rear of the vehicle, thereby increasing traction. However, the tradeoff, again, is that more downforce equals more aerodynamic drag, so teams attempt, particularly on qualifying runs, to lay the spoiler at as low an angle as possible to "free up" their vehicles for more straightaway speed. Stagger: The difference in tire circumference from one side to the other. Placing larger circumference tires on the right side of a race car, for instance, helps it turn better through the corner on an oval track. Roll a Styrofoam coffee cup on a table and you will see stagger as the bigger top end travels farther than the smaller bottom. Stickers: Slang for new tires. Name comes from the manufacturer's "stickers" that are pasted on the tire's surface. Stop and go: A black flag penalty imposed in which the driver must stop in the team's pit stall and can go only when the official says so. It usually is assessed for speeding on pit road or for unsafe driving. Superspeedway: A racetrack of one mile or more in distance. Road courses are included. Racers refer to three types of oval tracks. Short tracks are under one mile, intermediate tracks are at least a mile but under two miles and superspeedways are two miles and longer. Trading paint: A term used to describe aggressive driving involving cars bumping and rubbing. Telemetry: Data detailing key functions of a race car such as RPM. Commonly used for onscreen broadcast features. Tight: Also known as "understeer." A car is said to be tight if the front wheels lose traction before the rear wheels do. A tight race car doesn't seem able to steer sharply enough through the turns. Instead, the front end continues through the wall. Tri-oval: A racetrack that has a "hump" or "fifth turn" in addition to the standard four corners. Not to be confused with a triangle-shaped speedway, which has only three distinct corners. Talladega is a good example. Turbulence: Air that trails behind a race car and disrupts the flow of air to the cars behind it. Terminology Victory Lane: Sometimes called the "winner's circle." The spot on each racetrack's infield where the race winner parks for the celebration. Wedge: Wedge is the amount of downforce that is applied diagonally from the left rear to the right front to help either tighten or loosen the car. Changing the wedge in one corner impacts the other three corners proportionally. Sources: NASCAR, Bill Borden, Scripps Howard News Service

Overtime Rules Beginning with the 2018, NASCAR has instituted new overtime rules. When the Race is under caution during the closing laps, the Race distance may be extended beyond the advertised distance. NASCAR Overtime will be in effect under the following two circumstances: 1) When the caution period is continued into the lap preceding the scheduled white flag lap of the advertised distance of the Race. 2) If the caution lights are illuminated and/or yellow flag is displayed prior to the leader crossing the start/finish line before receiving the scheduled white flag in the advertised distance of the Race. NASCAR Overtime will not come into effect if the leader has crossed the start/finish line receiving the white flag. A Race that is extended and restarted in NASCAR Overtime will consist of one or more restart attempt(s) and requires the leader's vehicle to break the vertical plane of the leading edge of the "Overtime Line" under green flag conditions on the first lap of the attempt. A restart attempt will consist of a green flag lap, a white flag lap, and a black and white checkered flag finish. The "Overtime Line" is placed on the race track in a location designated by NASCAR. If the caution lights are illuminated and/or the yellow flag is displayed before the leader's vehicle breaks the vertical plane of the leading edge of the Overtime Line, the Overtime attempt will not be official and subsequent attempt(s) will be made until an official attempt occurs (i.e. the leader's vehicle breaks the vertical plane of the leading edge of the Overtime Line under a green flag condition). If the caution lights are illuminated and/or the yellow flag is displayed after the leader's vehicle breaks the vertical plane of the leading edge of the Overtime Line, it will be an official attempt, and the Race will not be restarted and will conclude under caution. All additional laps will be counted and scored. If caution period occurs after leader's vehicle breaks the vertical plane of the leading edge of the Overtime Line during the restart attempt; Section Freezing The Field - Caution After White Flag Is Displayed Procedure will be used to determine finishing positions for race.
