1 INSTITUTE OF CLAY SHOOTING INSTRUCTORS NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO SPRING & SUMMER 2014 AGM News in Brief Our AGM was held at The Clumber Park Hotel on Monday 17th March 2014, with our final council meeting of the year taking place beforehand. COUNCIL MEETING The Chairman, Malcolm Plant (MP) opened the meeting and moved straight on to the agenda. WORKSHOPS/SEMINARS & VISITS: The course booked for September 2013 with Neil Roach from MMU was cancelled due to lack of interest. Interestingly, at the coaching conference, N Fellows suggested we (ICSI) do courses jointly to get more interest, possibly using Neil Roach. Because of this suggestion, MP has not gone back to St John s University, York: we do not want to get another organisation motivated and nothing happens. John Robinson (JR)- made the comment that we should get the coaches to drive the topic and give them what they want; however, the questionnaire sent out to members in 2012 resulted in zero. John s opinion was that people think it is elitism because of the subject(s) chosen. Dave Boylan (DB)- believed it was logistics. Members are widely spread meaning long distances and travel time; make it central and tie it in with something else. JR- suggested looking at other organisations. To keep qualified a person has to attend a course at least once per annum. Sue Hart (SH) suggested including BASC, and all attendees to pay. Paul Dancer (PD) suggested a full page advert in Pull magazine, and also at future Coaching Conferences consideration should be given to ICSI doing its talk at the beginning rather than at the end of the conference. Leeds Armoury- still ongoing. Boxall & Edmiston, Shropshire- still ongoing. PROMOTING ICSI TO NEWLY QUALIFIED IN- STRUCTORS: MP confirmed the introduction to ICSI letter continues to be sent by CPSA to successful course candidates. Mailshot-BASC: Mike Alldis (MA) advised there is a full re-organisation within BASC, particularly Regional and Central. Dr Peter Marshall is now officer in charge of Best Practice, and Nick Lane is now in charge. Jane Hatton (formally Mathews) has returned to work parttime and responds to Nick Lane. WEBSITE DEVELOP- MENT: MP confirmed DB has taken responsibility for the creation of the new website. OTHER ASSOCIATIONS: BSSC At a recent BSSC meeting, Lord Glentoran (Chairman) commented that there were no lady members representing its members organisations. As SH was relinquishing her role looking after the Motto Docendo Discimus We learn by teaching website, MP approached Sue to become the ICSI representative at BSSC. Sue agreed and MP will accompany Sue to the next meeting. ANY OTHER BUSINESS: Data Protection Act: ICSI now has a DPA in place. Courses: DB to contact Loughborough Sports Psychology. Although Rugby coaching is not part of but allied to, DB will find a contact. ACCOUNTS: MP reported error in the heading of the first column on the balance sheet which should have read not Also the payment to BSSC is 3800 pa; however two payments have appeared together in one year because both cheques were cashed in MA advised that one payment should have been shown as a pre-payment. MP to give full accounts at the AGM following this council meeting. 3 The British Shooting Sports Council, of which the Institute is a member, commissioned a market research report last year on the activities and size of shooting in the UK. The work was done by a company called Public and Corporate Economic Consultants (PACEC), which had done a similar, but less extensive study, in The 28 page report can be downloaded from a link on the BSSC website. ( BSSC.org.uk ) The new report will be used, as was Chairman s Column the 2006 document, to defend shooting sports and to influence discussions with politicians, the press and other opinion formers. We have included the headline conclusions on a summary sheet, which is enclosed with this newsletter. There are several impressive financial numbers, but a couple of figures that have interested me are: Shooting is involved in the management of two-thirds of the rural land area. There are 4 million airgun owners of which 1.6 million shoot live quarry. The whole report is fascinating reading. I attended the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim in mid July and took the opportunity to make contact with several gunmakers and equipment suppliers, who would be prepared to have visitors from the Institute. The Council will follow up the opportunities and get back to you, the members. Good coaching during the rest of the summer. MP British Shooting and Countryman Show The sixth British Shooting and Countryman Show was held at Stoneleigh International Exhibition Centre in Warwickshire on Fri 14th, Sat 15th and Sun 16th February The organisers located us in Gunmakers Hall 3 similar to last year, alongside the other shooting organisations, CPSA, NRA, and the SNRA. The location of this group of stands, at the end of a row, could not have been better. As reported last year the organisers had extended the fair to three days and there was a lot of talk among the stand holders on the first day if this would be a good financial move. By the final day most of the stand holders thought the move was justified. Our stand was manned over the three days by Andrew Kirkland, David Boylan, Paul Dancer, Keith Stoker and Malcolm Plant. We had a steady stream of members calling for a chat and/or to pay their subs. And as in previous years existing coaches or prospective coaches enquiring about our membership requirements. Our format is well oiled now, we give advice on gun fit and master eye. We also advise many new and existing shooters who have problems where they can find their nearest ICSI coach to help them. Always looking for a hook to draw people on to our stand, not just walk passed or pick up a leaflet, I (KS) had the idea to make up a simple Eye Dominance Chart to hang at the back of the stand and make our normal simple test a more interesting. We could not have imagined how this simple addition would draw in the public. Amber Hill with Keith Stoker, Malcolm Plant and Paul Dancer When you left our stand and returned there was nearly always a number of people facing into the stand pointing their fingers at the chart. This chart was so successful we demonstrated it at our AGM. It was agreed that we would sell the chart in our shop items. The charts will be Trade Mark and Copyright protected. On the final day of the fair stand holders were informed of the death of John Bertrand, the fair organiser. The success of this fair could not have provided a more fitting epitaph for John and his vision that there was a place for such an enterprise. Lets hope it continues next year. Obituary It was with deep regret that the Registrar learned of the death of David Eynon. Our condolences go to his family. David joined the Institute in 1989 and was one of our original Associate members. Our Associate Members start with membership No 501. David was No

6 (Continued from page 5) Physical: Visual acuity Energy requirements Flexibility The above are only some of the items that would need to be considered to compile a personal performance profile. This would then be used to compare and measure improvements made. It would also help the athlete and coach to highlight the elements that need to be worked on more. The 3rd and 4th camps were to be held at Beverly in May and July; Beverly being chosen because the background AGM Afternoon there is as close as possible to the background at Barry Buddon, the site for the Commonwealth Games. At the 3rd camp each athlete would revisit profiling and nutrition, and individualisation of their respective development programmes would be worked on. At the 3rd and 4th camps the athletes would be working with JR, JP, and JT, plus a team of specialist coaches for each of the disciplines. Their shooting technique would be videoed and analysed, and their functionality and nutritional assessments made and continuously checked by the various experts in the support group at one-to-one sessions, on and off the range. JR and JP talked in detail about the heart rate measurements that had been taken by Jill, both in the steady state phase and in the shooting phase of their performance. You could actually see from the various figures taken if the shot was sloppy or sharp. This excellent presentation ended with a question and answer session and JR extended an invitation to members to attend and observe at any of the training camps. The level of detail that the team of athletes were to go through in preparation for the games was very impressive. KS. The pictures above right were taken at Beverly on my visit to the 4th training camp for our Commonwealth clay shooters, which Malcolm and I attended. Malcolm had also attended the 3rd camp and commented that the improvements made by the shooters was very noticeable. The final tally of medals won by the England team at the games was seven. 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze. This is the largest number of medals our clay shooters have won at a Commonwealth Registrar s Column Games. I would like to congratulate John and his team for the part they played in this fabulous achievement. We were lucky enough to be witness to the level of detail and preparation being put into the process of achieving success before the event. The shooters looked so confident in clips I saw on the television and they must all be congratulated for the effort they made to achieve this success. Wales and Scotland also won a Silver. 6 You will find two inserts in this newsletter. One to announce a visit to Westley Richards in September and the other listing the key facts that came out of the PACEC study referred to in Malcolm s column. Feel free to display these facts at your shooting ground to help promote shooting. We are still trying to arrange a visit to the museum at the Proof House.
