THE VII th GAMES OF LA FRANCOPHONIE 5
History of the Games of La Francophonie Held every four years, the Games of La Francophonie are a huge walk-in youth event that brings together around 2,500 athletes and artists from the Francophonie. The Games of La Francophonie are unique because they are the only international games where sports and cultural activities are presented in a competitive environment. The Games of La Francophonie were created in 1987 during the Summit of La Francophonie in Quebec City. The mandate of the Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie (CIJF), which reports to the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), is to oversee the overall organization of the Games in the host country. Participation of Canada Since the inception of the Games of La Francophonie, the Canadian delegation has consisted of three teams: Canada, Canada-New Brunswick and Canada-Québec. This tripartite representation reflects the desire of Canada and these two provinces to participate in different aspects of La Francophonie. It also demonstrates the historical and traditional importance that Quebec and New Brunswick attach to their Francophone roots. Athletes are chosen according to a selection process determined by each national sport organization, based on excellence criteria specific to each association, while respecting the procedure established by the CIJF. Artists are chosen through a national cultural competition. An international jury, appointed by the CIJF and supported by the OIF, selects the final candidates. Team Canada selects members from across the country, while Team Canada-Québec and Team Canada-New Brunswick select members from their respective provinces. Selection is based on excellence, not on linguistic affiliation. Athletes and artists whose mother tongue is not French and who do not speak French may participate in the Games of La Francophonie. The Games of La Francophonie since the beginning July 1989 Morroco 38 delegations, 1,700 participants July 1994 France, Paris 45 delegations, 2,700 participants August 1997 Madagascar 30 delegations, 2,300 participants July 2001 Canada 51 delegations, 2,400 participants December 2005 Niger 44 delegations, 2,500 participants September 2009 Lebanon 40 delegations, 2,500 participants September 2013 France, Nice 55 delegations registered 6

CULTURAL COMPETITIONS The cultural competitions makes the Games of La Francophonie unique. It is an exceptional opportunity to showcase New Brunswick s talented artists at an international level. For the VIIth Games, the province will be represented in four categories: storytelling, literature, photography, and painting. Competitions for Team Canada-New Brunswick participants will be held at the Nice National Theatre, the Louis Nucéra Library, and the Acropolis Convention Centre. 9
Storytelling Kevin Arseneau Originally from Robertville, and now residing in Cocagne, in southeastern New Brunswick. Kevin Arseneau cultivates the land of his ancestors on a farm of several acres while completing his studies in education and geography at the Université de Moncton. For over 9 years, he has been running the roads dressed in his plaid shirt, sharing his stories. Kevin has traveled to many areas of Canada, such as Quebec and Ontario, and around the world to places such as France, Belgium, Switzerland and New York telling the tales of his ancestors. He is passionate about the development, growth and socio-economic policies of the Acadians, and is currently the Student Union President at the Université de Moncton. In the world we live in, we no longer take time to talk and to listen, which is why stories are falling on deaf ears. It was in a garage in northern New Brunswick that Kevin s grandfather talked to him about a saying: every snowflake and every raindrop has a story to tell. For Kevin, stories are lived, felt, forgotten, and reinvented. That is why the young storyteller is trying to understand the world while reinventing it. His big dream? That one day, all televisions will be replaced by storytellers! 10
Literature Pierre-André Doucet Praised for his sincere and colourful playing, as well as his modern and fascinating writing, pianist and author Pierre- André Doucet is rapidly establishing himself as one of Canada s most captivating young artists. As a writer, Mr. Doucet has been awarded the Antonine- Maillet-Acadie Vie Literary Award for Kilométrage (Prix Volet jeunesse Richelieu, 2009), and has twice won the Fonds Jean-Robert Gauthier National Essay Competition (2007/2012). After participating in the Games of La Francophonie held in Beirut, Lebanon (2009), Mr. Doucet served as co-director of the Suites du Phénix ( ), a literary blog for emerging Francophone authors throughout the Francophonie. His first collection of poetry and short stories, Sorta comme si on était déjà là (Éditions Prise de parole), was published in October Mr. Doucet s career fuels a unique writing style that unfurls like music, marked with lyrical poetry and a confident rhythm, accented with touches of his roots. Through the supple use of lexical fields and rich expressions with double meanings, it depicts landscapes in which love, solitude, and wandering play a prominent role. The way he looks at life and relationships is lucid, tender, and very mature, but always from a fresh perspective. His texts often combine standard French with the Chiac dialect spoken in his hometown, a creolization coloured with archaisms, acadianisms, and some North American English that reflects the real-life experiences of his people. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Pierre-André Doucet holds a Master s degree in music interpretation from the Université de Montréal, where he is currently a doctoral candidate in classical piano interpretation. The piece presented to the jury reflects the totality of his latest research, by exploring identity, song, distance, and exile from a purely Acadian perspective. 11
