1 SATELLITE PROGRAMME, 2019 GENERAL PRESENTATION The Jeu de Paume in Paris is a leading art centre well known for its exhibitions and educational activity in relation to all forms of lens-based art, be its form electronic, photographic, cinematic, video, installation or online. Its mission involves organising and co-organising exhibitions, composing and hosting film retrospectives, symposiums and teaching programmes, and also an ambitious publishing activity. The events organised by Jeu de Paume, of which the Satellite programme is a part, make numerous narrative connections between the historical and the contemporary, between resonance and dissonance. Its renowned exhibitions give a varied audience the chance to discover work by established, little known and emerging artists. The Satellite programme supports young independent curators who already have specific experience in organising exhibitions by artists of international stature. In doing so it is developing an open, generalist approach to the presentation of works using the moving image (video, film). Each annual Satellite programme is entrusted to an independent curator who is given responsibility for organising that year s three exhibitions. In 2019, the twelfth Satellite season will be devoted exclusively to video work and will be co-produced by Jeu de Paume, CAPC musée d art contemporain in Bordeaux and the Museo Amparo de Puebla (Mexico). The associations Les Amis du Jeu de Paume and Les Amis du CAPC musée d art contemporain are also supporting the Satellite programme. A municipal museum granted the Musée de France label, the CAPC musée d art contemporain de Bordeaux has built up a collection of contemporary art from the 1960s onwards. Its main activities are the organisation of temporary exhibitions by French and international artists and the development of public and educational programmes. 1

2 The Museo Amparo is a private institution founded in 1991 in memory of Amparo Rugarcía de Espinosa by Manuel Espinosa Yglesias and his daughter Ángeles Espinosa Yglesias Rugarcía. Run through the Amparo Foundation, it is committed to preserving, studying, exhibiting and promoting awareness of pre- Hispanic, colonial, modern and contemporary art in Mexico. The Museo Amparo is considered one of the most important cultural and exhibition centres in Mexico. It has permanent galleries to exhibit its collection of pre-hispanic art, one of the biggest in any private institution in Mexico, and, in addition to the collection of colonial artworks from the 19th and 20th centuries, it presents an ongoing programme of national and international temporary exhibitions, as well as a dense programme of academic, artistic, educational and recreational activities for all publics. THE SATELLITE 12 PROGRAMME Each exhibition of the Satellite programme will focus on a single artist, who will produce a new video work and be presented in three different venues two in France: Jeu de Paume in Paris and CAPC musée d art contemporain in Bordeaux, and one in Mexico: the Museo Amparo in Puebla. Each exhibition will be accompanied by a publication. The respective opening dates of these exhibitions will be communicated to the newly chosen curator. 2

3 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Young independent curators wishing to apply to conceive the Satellite 12 programme are asked to submit their project in the form of a written document (in French, Spanish or English) comprising a short abstract in English. This text (5 pages maximum) will set out the candidate s approach, in keeping with the brief set out below, and present the three artists (biography and artistic approach) she or he wishes to work with over the year. This document, which should be seen as a curator s proposition, will be put before a selection committee comprised of representatives of the three partner institutions. It is not necessary for the candidate to contact the artists at this stage. This will only be done once the curator for the 2019 Satellite programme has been chosen. However, for this programme made up exclusively of video works, candidates will provide for the jury a selection of excerpts from existing video works by the artists they wish to work with. The artistic synopsis should be accompanied by an estimated budget. Candidates for this curatorship cannot claim any kind of expenses or compensation on this account. REMIT The artistic projects To be eligible the annual Satellite programme, the three proposed artists must not have had an institutional one-person show in France or Mexico over the 12 months preceding the possible presentation of their work at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, CAPC musée d art contemporain de Bordeaux, and the Museo Amparo. Apart from conceiving the Satellite programme, the curator undertakes to: - write all the texts relating to the exhibition, including the ones for visitors, and also a study of the artist s work or interview with the artist. These texts will be included in the publication accompanying the exhibition. - take charge of organising and supervise the installation of each exhibition at Jeu de Paume, CAPC musée d art contemporain in Bordeaux, and the Museo Amparo, in accordance with each institution s needs. - take part in efforts to collect funds and find partners for each of the three projects. 3

4 The exhibition spaces At Jeu de Paume Place de la Concorde, the Satellite programme projects are presented in the two rooms on level -1 of the building, namely, the mezzanine (18 m 2 ) and the foyer (24 m 2 ), with a total area of 42 m 2. At CAPC musée d art contemporain de Bordeaux, the Satellite programme is presented on the second floor of the museum, in a space with a total area of 140 m 2, comprising an entrance corridor (15 m 2 ) and two rooms, respectively 55 m 2 and 70 m 2. At the Museo Amparo, the Satellite programme will be presented on the third floor of the museum, in an exhibition space of m 2. The publications For each of the three shows, the curator will undertake to either write an essay on the work being shown, or transcribe an interview s/he has had with the artist, in order to keep a record of the three artists and the concept elaborated for the Satellite programme. The form in which this text is published will be specified after the final choice of curator (in June 2018). Each publication will have an earmarked budget. The budget (production, publication and curator s fees) In exchange for the missions entrusted to her/him by Jeu de Paume, CAPC musée d art contemporain de Bordeaux and the Museo Amparo, the curator will be paid the inclusive sum of 12,000 euros (twelve thousand euros, inclusive of VAT) as remuneration for all her/his curatorial activities. For the production and postproduction of each original work, Jeu de Paume, CAPC musée d art contemporain de Bordeaux and the Museo Amparo will allocate each of the three artists the overall, inclusive sum of 6,000 euros (six thousand euros, inclusive of VAT). A supplementary budget will be available for subtitling if necessary. In exchange for granting the distribution and reproduction rights to his work, the artist will receive from Jeu de Paume, CAPC musée d art contemporain de Bordeaux and the Museo Amparo an inclusive payment of 1,500 euros (one thousand five hundred euros, inclusive of VAT). 4

5 The budgets for mounting the exhibitions and the travel and accommodation expenses of the artists and curator for the preparation and opening of the exhibitions are managed separately by each institution and are not conveyed to the candidates. She or he will have until 30 April 2018 to prepare a final project (and to have secured beforehand the agreement of the three artists to take part) and draw up a budget. This project will define the general orientation of the three exhibitions. The first exhibition will open in January More comprehensive information regarding the deadlines and inauguration dates for the exhibitions will be provided after the designation of the curator by the jury. 5
